The show was much better before you knew Ash would forget his pokemon between seasons. I think I petered out after he ditched his Squirtle, thus putting my favorite pokemon character on a bus. I don't think it was a function of my growing up, for a change. I mean, my favorite episode was Island of the Giant Pokemon, just because it featured Squirtle and Bulbasaur talking.

He doesn't forget them, though. Apparently, he got the idea that he should go in to each region "fresh" so he doesn't rely too much on any one Pokémon other than Pikachu, then switches up to his strongest fighters when the chips are down. Notice that even in Kanto he remembers to use Pokémon that he never carried around before but had caught (except that most people never saw him catch Tauros because 4K!ds saw the one guy hold a revolver to Ash's nose and went "Oh noes! We can't have a real gun on a kid's show!" and didn't even dub the episode), repeating this strategy in Johto, Sinnoh, and the Battle Frontier.

After all, it makes for a longer series without DBZ-ing it up: Charizard and Sceptile are still pretty much Ash's strongest (though now he's got Torterra and Infernape to match), and Pikachu and the baby-mons can still struggle against the first few gyms in the region. The only weak link to this is Pikachu: it should be smashing through everything by now, given that it's the only thing that's stuck with Ash all this time.

As Mando said, he uses Squirtle during the Battle Frontier against Brandan. I also think he uses it sometime during the Hoenn Finals, but I'm not sure. Charizard returns more frequently.

    Chapter 42: Mukking About
    Spoiler
    Show

I enter the gym; it looks like it's a straight shot to Koga. That's kind of wierd.

But as I walk towards him, my foot slams into something. I press my hand up against a wall.

    ...The heck?
    "Koga, you..."

I go over and see my old... that guy. The guy who sits at the front of the gym and gives me usually useless advice. There's got to be a name for that sort of relationship.

"Oh, so that's... Koga loves mazes, doesn't he? Because he can't stand to be caught."

Well, I figure walking by the other gym members is the best technique... This means fighting them, of course.
...Well, that's their right, right? I don't have a choice.

"Of course." Azula's listening, after all.

Well then, let's see what you can do.

    ...Lolwhat.
This gym's poison-based, right? What's up with this?
Still, sneaky is as sneaky does -- It's kind of exciting, being surprised.
"Rya, let's have you finish this!"

    "Ok!"
    The hypno headbuts Rya strongly...

And man, that hurts. I need to finish this fast.
    "Rya, use bite!"

...That was less effective than I was hoping.... And the opponent's counter-attack is dangerously strong. I'll have to use a potion and back off.

And then poisoned... This surprise really has me on the ropes. I'm pretty impressed.
    Change of tactics.
    "Use return."
    "What?"
"She's bound to be weak to physical attacks."
"Ok! My love overcomes all! Love and beauty shock!"
...Does she think she's Sailor Venus now?

Of course, even that doesn't finish it. This is actually a pretty long fight...

It's down to this. Do I attack, or do I try and heal Rya?
    ...
... Please don't let this be the wrong choice. Like Koga said... This is all down to me.
    "Rya, Return again!"

    Woo-hoo!
    "...I guess that's something..."*cue glasses*"Not even a psychic could see coming!"
    ...Yeah?

    "You're not too bad yourself."

    "Hey, don't call me a child! I'm 16!"
I go and heal Rya, when I notice my antidote stocks are low. I need to go fix that... But I end up having to buy expensive heal-alls... Darnit, those things are pricey.

Ok, now let's put Terra back up-front for the usual gym battle.

...I'm not going to say it, I'm not going to say it...I'm...Eh, screw it.
Why is everyone in this gym a f****ing ninja?

This is just getting wierd. Did my research mix up the next two gyms?

I get a lucky break when the Drowzee's "free" attack fails. But let's not waste time with "bite," and just go straight for...
    "Rya, use Return!"

Perfect. I've learned from last time.

I guess I must have gotten things confused.

But these are a lot weaker than the hypno.

In fact, Return one-hit KOs these guys.

And a level-up for our troubles!

It's a bit weaker than Rya’s other moves, so I think we’re better off without it.

    That's the spirit!
... No, wait. Koga's basically evil. I guess that's... wrong?
"Maybe you should find a better ninja master."
    One who's not evil.

Anyway, I'll go switch Rya to the front, given how wrong I was.

His actual ninjitsu is pretty good, given how impossible it was for me to find him when he was talking to me.

They do? Well, anyway, what do pokemon have to do with that?

    Sonavu...
And, of course, there's a bite attack waiting. But no more!

Arright. I'm now ready for anything.

Were they just luring me into a blunder? Twice?
    ...Man, I feel stupid.

...I'm somewhat wierded out. Isn't gym regulation limiting to a single type?
No, these people make the rules. It's no good expecting them to hold to it.

...Not really. You guys make a clear path.

    ...Sonuva...
    Ok, enough switching around.
"Terra, let's see how you do!"

    Not perfect, but good enough.

Aah, much better. This gym isn't going to give me room to breathe, is it? I wonder what the man himself has in store...

Listen, I don't care about this whole ninja thing.

...Oh... I am so getting Terra to mind-crush you for that. Don't even suggest I'm like that fiend of a man...
"I'm afraid you can't solve all problems by mind-crushing them. I've tried, and it ended up being rather dull."
"Hey, if you could read her mind at any time, why didn't you do it while we were looking for her?"
" 'No, not any time. Only when it would be funny.'... Or something like that."
My life is a Roger Rabbit joke... Eh, well. Could be worse; could be Toonworld.

And once again, I have chosen poorly.

The "free attack" is wasted; always a relief.

And from there Return works its mojo.

This gym is very odd. I kind of like it -- after all my worries, it's fun for things not to go as planned...
But only if I can still make it work, of course.

Luckily, it's another wasted attack... But I admit, I'm starting to get worried. Assuming Sabrina is still a psychic-trainer... Rya's kind of not as good as I'd hope.

    But she's enough for now.

Ooh, do his pokemon know rare moves? Let's see!

I was correct! I am vindicated!

What sort of lousy theme is Koga running, anyway?

Rya's getting pretty strong here, though.

Until I'm at the man himself. This time, we're face-to-face...and your dopey little maze means no running away.

Koga: "After all, I was sure I had left you crying in the dust, little girl."
"I got up. Your 'attacks' are sneaky, but they don't understand real passion."

"Unless they have an antidote and a pokeflute."
Koga: "Heh. Items like that only slow you down."

"I hope you've got more surprises than that in you."

"Me, I've got tons of surprises."
...And I so didn't train enough for this.

Oh, dear. Well, as long as that Muk keeps using 'booster' moves, Spike's in good shape.
    "Don't let up!"

    ... KOGA!
Well, ok, change of plans. Have Spike use attract to give him time. I've seen 3 out of 4 moves -- Minimize, Sludge ball, and Acid Armor... No real troubles.
"There's something about an honorable foe like you... Yeah. A battle... Really gets the heart pumping." He raises her hand to his chest. She blushes. "You feel me?"
    Koga's Muk: "Y-yes, please..."
"Maybe after the fight, we'll cool off together."

Not that it matters. The fight just drags on longer and longer, neither of us getting in a good hit...

    *twitch*

I even have to heal Spike and dig's power points after a while -- it's a slow grind down for both of us.
    "...Damnit. Damnit. Damnit."
"You can do it, Spike! It's just a matter of patience! You're the best poison-type around!"
"Ok, then. Ether me up one more time."
...We're down to max ethers now, and the Muk's defense is as high as it gets. The odds of a dig attack working are maybe... 2/10.

    "ONE MORE. LET'S END THIS!"
...Yeah, but just getting us this far has used all my ethers and max ethers...We have 10 more shots until we hit elixers, assuming Koga doesn't have more super potions.

    "You did it!"
    "Course I did."
    "Hurray!"

Koga: "Let's not start the cheer squad up yet, little girl...What do you think...Of this?"

    "I'm less than impressed, personally."
And now we're down to it... His final pokemon.

"I'm a little tired of this posturing display. As you said, Mistress, there's no real passion in him."

"Now let all the pokemon in the zoo go."
    Koga: "What?
"Do it. Ask the, where they want to be and take them there."
Koga: "You've beaten me completely, haven't you?..."

He puts it in my hand with a grim bow.

    Awesome.

Koga: ”Let no one say I am not generous in defeat.”
But the important thing is you’re defeated.

And free stuff. I think this may be a requirement for gyms to do.

And shoved onto a mass-produced data-disk, huh? Oh the passing of progress...
Koga: "Go rest. When you awake tommorow, I'll have done as you've asked."
    "Good."

I step out of the gym, another evil beaten.
    "Nice work, Terra, Spike, Rya."
"Now may I have my celebratory pizza party, Mistress?" she asks, with a bit of a laugh in her voice.
"...Yeah, I guess so. I wonder if there is a pizza place in Fuschia..."
    "Hey! Let's try seafood, then!"
"I don't think that many seafood shops do take-out..."
    "Awww..."
Another star for Sage's map...and another step closer to my dream.
But I think Sabrina's the biggest worry of all. Even just getting to her... How am I going to do that?

I use her as often as the opportunity comes up... I'm actually pretty frustrated at how few people use types that Azula is strong against. It's really a huge pain, especially compared to how many poison or normal-type users there are.

The things that Azula are useful against are many: a straight-up blast of FIRE will kill off quite a few opponents. Give her Fire Blast and she only becomes more effective with it.

It's a real bummer that the Phys/Spec split isn't until Gen IV, though. Rya could have used the power of a Physical Bite.

Azula's useful, but about 90% of the time, for any non grass/ice type enemy, there's something more useful.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done... Like I said, Zu-Zu's useful, and I'm sure she could do nearly anything ... I generally like type-covering, though, and I have few types that this party doesn't have an attack for. It's part of how I'm being more cautious in this playthrough than I normally am. It may be something I mess with later, especially since I hope to find a better 4th move for Azula than her current megapunch.

Well, as far as strong moves go, I think dumping Strength on half your team was a bad choice.

Yeah... replace Strength with Fire Blast (now that you can Fly everywhere, hop on over to the department store and buy one). 109 base SpAtk and a STAB 120 power inferno don't really leave much room for survival if you're not prepared for it.

It's better than their previous set of normal-type moves, and I'm not sure what else to do there. I don't actually like having a lot of normal-type moves about, but I just don't know what options are good and which are bad... I'm kind of a lousy pokemon player, in a scenario where I don't want to screw up. I'd be happy to hear some good replacements.

It's not at the department store in this game. It's the prize for defeating Blaine... Besides, doing that would leave me with two fire-type moves, yes? I've generally heard two moves of the same type is a bad move. Or at least not a good one. But I can see it as a replacement for Flame Thrower. Or would it be better to have one "high power" move with low PP and a more every day move with higher?

Edit: There's also a copy of Fire Blast in Silph Co, according to Bulbapedia, so it's coming up.

Edit 2: sorry if this comes off as a little attitude-laden. I have problems with getting defensive sometimes. Fixing.

I assume voting for reserve training is still going.

In no particular order (Nuriko is only at the bottom because I had to look up his name, for instance):
    1. Aquamarine
    2.Ala
    3.Eda
    4.Eve
    5.Erika
    6.Nuriko

Well done, this is a very good LP! I am sure I have said that before, but repeating it any number of times could not be overdoing it. Unless it irritated you.

I'd recommend keeping Flamethrower. Unless you are seriously contemplating battling other players with optimized pokemon (which I doubt), Flamethrower will get you through most of the game with ease. Besides, Fireblast only has a base of 80-85 accuracy. I HATE moves that miss that often, cause it happens more than 15-FREAKING-%.

I usually have Flamethrower, Steel Claw, Fly and _____ on my charizards. (Thunder punch or Toxic are usually good to fill the gap. I like Thunder punch cause it helps vs Flying and Water)

Dragon Claw gives Charizard near-perfect coverage with Flamethrower. In Gen III, it is perfect coverage, and both run off of SpAtk, to boot. Metal Claw is fairly weak. Fire Blast, despite its bad accuracy, will come through more often than not, and when it does, it razes the enemy with nearly 33% extra damage compared to Flamethrower.

I replaced Metal Claw with Steel Wing a while back, but Dragon Claw sounds just great for Zu-Zu later in the game; another attack to use against Lance is good, and better coverage is also good.

Edit: While I'm at it, can anyone think of a good non-psychic type move for Terra? She's got two "support" moves and two psychic type moves, which I don't like.

You could always use the elemental punches, with the type based on what you think would round out your team's advantages. Seeing as this is still 3rd Gen, they run off her much better Special Attack rather than Attack.

Edit: Wait, scratch that. Those aren't as readily available in this game (apparently only obtainable through breeding). Whoops. The only other alternative I can think of besides those would be Shock Wave, which is a pretty "meh" choice. Not having that many alternatives shouldn't be too bad though, since even neutral hits from any Psychic-type move from an Alakazam are pretty painful.

I'd vote for Shadow Ball or Shock wave for Terra.

Dragon Claw gives Charizard near-perfect coverage with Flamethrower
Seconded. If you can, Dragon Claw works well too.
