New to Warhammer

I recently borrowed a book from a friend of mine, the Core Rulebook for Warhammer Fantasy, and while I understand the rules just fine, I'm a bit lost as to what I should choose. I'm not sure what race would be good to start playing as, and it's also a matter of how difficult such an army would be to paint, as I'm not particularly experienced in that regard either. As such, I'm asking if some experienced players can come forth and tell me which army they believe is the easiest to paint, the easiest to buy, and the easiest to use. Could anyone help me?
