Re: Dwaer Depths
OOC: I might be a little slow, but... when did this magical healing on Malosh occur? I'm still at 4/20 HP.

Re: Dwaer Depths
ooc: Ooops... sorry, Since you asked for healing and she pulled a healing scroll, I had in my mind thought she'd healed you.
Soranda, somewhat belatedly removes a scroll of lesser vigor from the pack and casts it on Malosh. [spoiler]Only fail on a 1: (1d20+9)[19]Show me a hero, and I'll write you a tragedy.

Re: Dwaer Depths
OOC: As I said before, assume Soranda applied her healing spell to Malosh BEFORE the battle, giving him 11 more HP.
DC: 15 Listen check:
Spoiler
You hear the faintest of sucking sounds coming from the ceiling
(26) Malosh
Malosh fires an arrow at the cube. It lodges deep inside it.
(22) Nustrilaa
The wizard also fires an arrow at the cube and it, too, gets stuck inside it.
Your knowledge check:
Spoiler
It occurs to you that the stone that this sphere is made of reminds you of an extremely rare material you read about once. When properly treated alchemically (in a very dangerous process) it is possible to make stone that prevents all magic from passing through it (like lead for x-rays).
(18) Gainer
The weird species which I don't really understand fires his arrow, too, at the cube. He is apparently quite frightened by the cube and begins to back up towards the door.
(17) Soranda
The artificer moves around the large gate and pulls a dagger. She tosses it in the gelatinous cube's direction, adding to the assortment of ammunition already contained inside it.
(14) Hobgoblin
Your resident red shirt fires his own arrow. Though I didn't think it was actually possible, he misses!
(11) Silas
The Paladin does what he does best, rushing the death cube and delivering a mighty blow. It is starting to look a little like jello that's been played with a little too much.
(6) Enya
The little gnome fires her crossbow (scoring a critical hit!) and shredding the rest of the cube to bits...
(5) Persona
With the cube dead, Persona turns and looks in the direction of the sound he heard. He sees another cube stuck to the ceiling, about to fall onto the back of the party! He fires his wrist bow and delivers the lightest of blows
(-2) Gelatinous Cube (big yellow box on the map)
The second cube releases itself from the ceiling, falling directly on top of the hobgoblin and Gainer. Though they try to get out of the way, they are both absorbed by the hideous thing, both going stiff as the cube's paralytic enzymes take effect.
OOC: Damn, I thought these two cubes would give you real trouble, but you guys ripped that thing to bits!

Re: Dwaer Depths
Silas wipes some sweat from his brow, relieved to see the cube destroyed, only to hear the muffled shouts of alarm as Gainer and the hobgoblin conscript are engulfed. He curses as he swings around, slime glistening on his blade. "Get out of the way!" he shouts as he attempts to charge forward...
Spoiler
If possible, can somebody make room for me? I won't be able to charge unless I've got a clear shot at the cube.
If I can charge, well, here's the attack roll: (1d20+5)[19]
Damage (still power attacking for full): (2d6+6)[13]
If I can't get a charge in when my turn comes up... Silas will drop his sword, draw his bow, and fire at the cube.
Attack (-4 for firing into melee?): (1d20)[5]
Damage: (1d8)[1]
Will you take the rocket launcher?

Nustrilaa
The Wizard is already at the edge of the platform, and doesn't really have any side to step to...
...however, she's also quite close to the cube, and does have take the opportunity to step backwards before notching her next arrow.

Re: Dwaer Depths
(26) Malosh
Reacting quickly to the new threat behind him, Malosh turns and puts another arrow into the cube. The arrow lodges right next to the suffocating Gainer.
(22) Nustrilaa
The wizard takes a step back and tries to loose an arrow. Though technically the Cube has an AC of 4, the roll of a 1 causes her to miss! Fortunately, she does not snap her bowstring.
(18) Gainer
**gurgle gurgle gurgle**
(17) Soranda
The artificer moves further around the ring, drawing another dagger and getting into a more advantageous position.
(14) Hobgoblin
**gurgle gurgle gurgle**
(11) Silas
Silas charges the cube, delivering a solid hit.
(6) Enya
Again with the gnome and the firing of the crossbow and the hitting of the cube!
(5) Persona
Persona moves into melee range, scoring a light hit and putting herself thoroughly in harm's way.
(-2) Gelatinous Cube (big yellow box on the map)
The second cube lurches forward, trying to engulf those standing in front of it. Silas is able to backstep in time, avoiding the attack. Persona and Malosh are not so lucky, however, and are added to the menagerie inside the cube. They are both immediately paralyzed by the cube's slime.
OOC: For the life of me, I cannot figure out how much damage the cube's acid does.

Re: Dwaer Depths
Silas thanks the Silver Flame as he manages to avoid becoming engulfed. However, the presence of so many allies floating around inside the ooze means he has to be more careful with where he places his strikes. He carefully cuts at the corners of the cube, where no still-living organic matter is engulfed...

Re: Dwaer Depths
Fast Forward!
By the skin of your teeth you are able to kill the gelatinous cube, but not without a cost. The hobgoblin, Gainer, and Persona are all claimed by the cube's acid. Malosh manages to escape with his life, though much of his hair has been eaten away.
Your investigation of the rest of the chamber reveals little. The large pile of bones at the bottom of the chamber seems unappetizing so you gather the bodies of the fallen and proceed back to the top of the tower. The warforged named Phase still waits for you on the airship. He flies you back towards the university, still without saying a word. As you climb back into the window from whence you originally came, you find that the room is empty. Phase and the airship veer away along with the bodies of your fallen comrades.
Rather awkwardly, you stand in the cluttered office for almost half an hour before the door opens. A young girl enters dressed in the robes of a student. She looks about cautiously as she speaks.
“The professor sent me to deliver a message. He’s asked you to meet him at the Stone Pony Emporium in three days time after dark. He says it isn’t safe for him here at the university anymore. I’m also supposed to give you this.” She digs into her robes and procures a key. She hands it to you and motions towards one of the bookshelves. “He said it was for that chest on the second shelf. Good day.”
She slips out the door and hurries off down the hall. Opening the chest, you find 10,000 gold (in platinum pieces).
OOG: Welcome back! Please post what your character does in their three days off. The two new players are also new hires of the professor who simply could not make it to the first meeting. They have both been invited as well.Spoiler

Re: Dwaer Depths
If events allow, I will construct two items:
1) Healing Belt (MIC:110)
500 gold, 40 xp, 1 day, emulate Cure Moderate Wounds (DC:22): (1d20+13)[31]
If the emulation fails, try it again for day 2: (1d20+13)[28]
If the emulation fails the second time, try again for day 3: (1d20+13)[16]
If the emulation worked the first time, then for the 2nd day try this:
2) Artificer's Monocle (MIC:72)
750 gold, 60 xp, 2 days, emulate Identify (DC:21): (1d20+13)[25]
Edit: Looks like both worked, I certainly hope my cut was at least1250- sorry, 1350 - material component for Identify. :)Last edited by Wiz; 2010-10-31 at 09:31 PM.

Re: Dwaer Depths
You spend your three days crafting, resting, buying, and biding your time. As darkness falls and the streets begin to empty in the merchant districts of the city. One by one you arrive and knock at the door of the Stone Pony Emporium. A small gnome answers the door, his eyes bulging and bulbous behind his huge glasses. Looming behind him, silent as ever, is Phase. The gnome whispers "shhhhh!" and motions you in quickly. With barely a word he shoos you into the warehouse adjoining his shop. There, huddled in between two large stacks of crates is Jaspar, the young "professor" who hired you. He is sitting at a small table, pouring over journals and papers. He leaps excitedly to his feet once you start to pour in.
"Yes! Yes! Welcome!" He says in an excited whisper. He glances around the warehouse like he is worried about being overheard. "Somebody has been after me. They tried to poison me after you left. That poor chicken..." He shakes his head in dismay. "Nevermind though, let's talk about what you found! I sent some research students to investigate the portal you discovered. Most of what they found were bones, but they did find two things, three marvelous things!"
He pulls a satchel out from under the table. Reaching inside, he pulls out a stack of bones. Shoulder blade bones, to be precise. "Someone has used these bones to write a journal. It seems that large ring is just as I suspected. It is a magic portal. The stone around it is some kind of alchemically treated substance that serves as an anti-magic barrier. I'm still not sure how it works, but those bones you found are creatures who were teleported into the sphere and died there."
The second thing he procures to show you is a tiny glass vial. "The students I sent found these in the alcove of the portal. They're tiny crystals, probably left over from whatever was powering that device. From what I've gathered The portal was able to serve as a receiving end for teleportation but can't start it without some kind of activation stone. Whatever these crystals are, they came from that stone. I haven't been able to identify them, but I know someone who can."
Lastly, he grabs a small duffel bag sitting on a crate. "At least one dragon made it through that portal. Unfortunately none of the scales were salvageable, but a few of the larger bones, talons, and teeth were in good condition. If you find yourself a crafter who knows what's what, he can probably do something with these."
He turns and sits back down at his desk. "Now, back to business. I'm going to need you to take these crystals and journal bones to a certain dwarf I know. He should be able to make better sense of them than I. What say you?"Spoiler

Re: Dwaer Depths
Soranda picks up the bones and begins to read (no need to decipher, it is in Elven). Almost immediately she realizes how long it took to carve this journal. The lines in the bones are deep gouges, as if they had been scratched over and over again for years.
The journal is that of an Elven bard. She tells a tragic tale of how her adventuring party braved the wilds of Xendrik looking for riches. While crawling through a massive structure built by the giants, her party fell victim to a terrible trap that sent them here. She has no idea where they are but they've been trying to escape for five years. No spell nor blade can hurt the stone and she suspects that they will never escape. Towards the end of the letter she tells how one by one the party took their lives. They were able to sustain themselves on the priest's spells but one can only eat conjured food for so long...
"The Dwarf's name is Bomgar. Lives in the Aegis Tower on the Western side of Sharn."
