Auto-Axe (3.5)
The party's battle sorcerer, while in the laboratory of a mad scientist Eladrin, said he wanted to search around for a useful device (I'd said the lab was cluttered with all sorts of half finished projects). He rolled a natural 20 on the search check, so I asked him what he'd like to find, and he said some sort of weapon... first thought in my head for a weapon built by a mad scientist was an automatic axe, so that's what I had him find. I established that it has a hinge and is powered by batteries, of which I gave him four, the Eladrin promising to make him more if he uses it to kill lots of demons.
Any ideas for what it does?

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
Perhaps it harvests energy from the demons and sends it back to Eladrin, though thats fluff :D
Maybe...an extra attack or bonus to damage do to it adding to the force of the swing?

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
From my Measure of a Man project, here are the Infinity Arms Automatic weapons! The Maelstrom or the Power Axe would both work well.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
I want it to mainly be hilarious, rather than super strong, although it ought to be strong enough to be viable. Currently he fights with a +1 Greataxe.

I am fond of the ripsaw-glaive from Gnomes of Golarion; it would not be difficult to modify.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
Well, since it's reliant on batteries(which presumably will work something a bit like ammo), it should be significantly juicier than a normal item of it's level, as normal axes don't need to worry about such things.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
I would have it float in the air beside him and chop at enemies, effectively granting him +1 attack per round (it attacks once on its own, plus whatever attacks he makes with his held weapon). It only does this if attended; no sending it into a room on its own.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
+1 to dancing axe. Extra features are optional. Fun to use, not excessively powerful.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
Hows 'bout dis:
Each battery contains 2d4+1 charges (rolled when you replace the battery). Once a battery is out of charges, it can no longer be used (unless it's one of those rechargeable batteries, but, you know nobody uses those things).
The Automatic Axe is a simple +1 keen great-ax with a battery slot. Minor refluffing to maybe change the hinge to a dial, with 4 set things to point the dial at, and a button in the middle. The settings are labelled 1 through 4, and turning the dial to one of them and pushing the button (a move action), activates a special ability, at the cost of battery charges, as follows:
1 -- Using one charge, the crit goes from x3 to x4 for the round.
2 -- Using two charges, your next attack also deals 1d6 Dex damage.
3 -- Using three charges, your next attack also forces the opponent to make a DC 17 fortitude save, or be paralyzed for 2 rounds.
4 -- Using four charges, the axe moves of it's own accord, forcing it's wielder to automatically use a standard action to make a sweeping attack, which attacks each and every creature in your threatened area, as though you were using the Whirlwind Attack feat (with one exception: you roll only one attack roll, and compare the result to each available opponent's AC individually, to see if you hit).

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
a +1 animated seems the simplest around, and can be powered up easily based on party level.
another alternative is having it be Psychokinetic (animates weapon for 1 round/level, attacks with your bab and wis modifier), and burning more charges increases the item's attack bonus (as per the augmentation).

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
Maybe it could be a vibro-axe- vibrates really fast, giving it bonuses. But all social checks for 10 minutes after using the axe get a -2 penalty- since the guy is still stuttering from the vibrations.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
a +1 axe which can uses charge from the battery to add extra per hit.
eg: battery contains 5 charges, using one charge adds an extra +1 to hit, using 2 charges adds +2 to hit, etc.Hey! I care about the law - It's justice i don't give a toss about.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
Dancing Axe that deals electricity damage as well as slashing would be my guess. Make it consume batteries quickly as to nott be OP.

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
Or make it a +1 Axe of Whirling Blade (spell compendium?)
One use of the Whirling Blade feature drains one charge of the battery. It makes the Axe a Very Cool weapon without it being crazy overpowered. :)

Re: Auto-Axe (3.5)
Have it act like this hammer. Every time it's activated, uncontrollable madness and destruction with a strength check or some such to choose where it's aiming.

An axe that runs by electricity? This has to be the Axe of Val Hallen, Viking God of Rock!
