Words cannot express my utter fanboyish glee at this episode. And I totally disagree with Dorothy: Black is where it's at.

Ninja-Edit: ....Tengu's post just before mine pretty much sums up my feelings actually.

Things i learned this update: Schwarzwald is not just a crazy conspiracy theorist, he also loves making references. Dorothy's voice is very hard to imitate as my own attempts show. The next mission will take us to FLCL!

And like everyone else, i really do love Big O. One of the few super robot shows that i can wholeheartedly say i enjoy.

Normally when someone says that they show their attempts.

Glad we went with Setsubou (although the city-block-destroying brofist that would be inevitable between Big O and Gunleon would have also been nice to see).

The Rand version of this mission includes him banging his head on a table (repeatedly) to try to restore his memory, being called a louse for suggesting Dorothy call him Darling, and waking up in Roger's bed. Hence the doujin image from a few posts' earlier.

Big O is glorious, Setsuko is showing some resolve without being forced into a corner... I must concur with Tengu.

I was very busy recently, like I said at the start of chapter 11. We're talking "only now do I have actual time for an update" levels of busy here. So, expect chapter 12 in a day or two. In the meantime, the character sheet for Big O is here.

Hey everyone, it's time for another update! A relatively big one this time. I don't have a lot to say this time, except: This mission is not very hard if you know what you're doing. And I did not know that. Expect hilarity.

    Chapter 12: Blue Sky Fish

    Introduction:
    Spoiler
    Show
Look, it's people whom we may or may not know from Rand's route!

Talho: Dammit, Holland. Don't tell me you're chickening out now?
    Holland: ...
    Talho: Say something!
Holland: We got feds on our tail, cash is running out, and you want Gekkostate to go to some backwater in a wild goose chase. Let's cut our losses. I'm out of here.
Talho: Then why did you come all the way here before changing your mind? Is it because of that guy...
Hap: Now, guys. Don't fight on the bridge, okay? Everything will be alright. Eureka already went out there. She's a smart girl, she can handle it, right?
    Holland: Yeah... she'd better...

In a small town of Bellforest, a teenage kid was driving around on his scooter. And like teens are prone to do - moping.

Renton: Today's my 14th birthday... 14 years of aimlessness, huh? Nothing ever happens here. The world changed a lot six months ago, everyone says - but this place is the same as always. Sis, no surprise you left this for something less boring. But where are you now?

Axel: Renton! Finally, you're back from town! Stop fooling around, the shop's got a guest today!
Renton: Someone needs mechanical work done? Who is it?

    Setsuko: Nice to meet you.
    Renton: H... hello there!
Renton's penis inner thoughts: Wow! What a hot girl! I wonder will she become my girlfriend... wait, she's much older than me, it can't ever happen. But wait again - it's my birthday! Maybe it's the present from the world: that a cute girl falls from the sky and... what kind of reality are you living in? I'll just ask her! Focus, Renton, focus! You'll never know until you try...
Setsuko: Umm, Axel - is your grandson alright? I think he just phased out right now...
Axel: Snap out of it! I need you to pick up some parts at the UN. You may as well escort our guest around town. No need for her to be bored and wait while I service the unit.
    Renton: Chance! I mean, okay!
Setsuko: Something suspicious is going on here...

Renton: So... did you come here for maintenance?
Setsuko: No, thanks to Balgora's systems I can do that by myself just fine. I need your grandpa's help for upgrades. There's a part that I, umm, picked up... that I want integrated.
Renton: Wow! I didn't know you had a combat unit like that. You must be a great soldier. I'm just a mechanic in training... Renton Thurston, age 14 starting today. It's my birthday.
Setsuko: And my name's Ohara Setsuko. You can just call me Setsuko. It's true that I am soldier, but...
Renton: Umm, I know it's sudden, Setsuko, but... could you be my girlfriend?
Setsuko: You just said you are 14...
    Renton: Aww...
Setsuko: Hey, do not be sad now! Umm, say something, say something... I am sure you will find a girlfriend soon enough if you just try hard! Dreams come true if you believe in them.
Renton: Wow, that's just what my sister used to say all the time!
Setsuko: Phew... I can't believe that worked.

Setsuko: So, this is how we helped repel an alien invasion.
Renton: Awesome! I really wish I could see that. And the Coordinators... you said they're not bad, and I believe you but... how come they dropped a colony on Earth then?
Setsuko: That... really happened? But I thought we prevented it!
Renton: Small fragments fell down and caused a lot of damage. And the Federation blames Coordinators from space, and wants them to pay back for all they have done. The UN said so. Oh, and here's the UN building. Be right back!
Setsuko: The Federation blames ZAFT? That's nothing new for me... but they use the UN to spread their propaganda around...
Renton: Okay, I'm back! Grandpa will be happy. Hey, look - I got a message, too.
    Setsuko: From "Eureka"? Who's that?
Renton: I don't really know. Some kind of secret agent group who's in contact with me and grandpa. They only send us text messages, but it's pretty exciting! A conspiracy behind the government's back, just like in ray=out.
Setsuko: You really like that magazine, don't you?
Renton: Yeah! Flying around looking for best trapar to ref on, unbound by anything, fighting the bad guys... Holland is my hero!

Axel: Took you long enough, Renton! Do you at least have these hydraulic replacement parts? Or were you daydreaming again and left them on the side of the road?
Renton: No, they're here. If I missed them, Setsuko would be sad.
Axel: So you're on a first name basis already? Setsuko... I wonder about her machine. The weapon she wants me to install looks like it belonged to such a robot before. And the combat protocol is already coded in.
    Renton: What does it mean?
Axel: Hell if I know... maybe she killed a teammate and stole his weapon.
Renton: She'd never do that! Hey, LFOs! They're flying above us!
Axel: Flying and... crashing! Duck for cover, Renton!
Renton: Aaaaah! It's going right for us... wait, it's going for the house! The part where I live! That's even worse!

    Crash!

Renton: That LFO... crashed into my room...
Axel: It's the Nirvash type zero. I never thought I'd see it again...
Eureka: Is this the Thurston machine shop?
    Renton: Woah! She's cute!
Eureka: My LFO is in need of repairs. Nirvash crashed.
Matthew: That's not the best excuse I've ever heard. You think Eureka will be alright, Leader?
Holland: She'd better be. Otherwise, we'll have to act.
    Matthew: What, and shoot them?
Holland: For now, just stay in hiding and observe!
Stoner: So, it all goes back to Thurston again? I must get in position to take a good photo...

Eureka: I'm sorry for crashing into your room.
Renton: Don't... don't mention it! The place was old and falling apart anyway. Ahaha...
    Eureka: You act strangely.
Renton: I just had enough of excitement for one day, I think.
Eureka: I tried not to cause damage, but this was the only way to contact you. Nirvash is a good child but... it's sick now.
    Renton: Huh, sick?

    At the same time, outside:
Axel: Miss Setsuko, I must ask you a favor.
    Setsuko: Yes?
Axel: Your machine is upgraded and functioning now. Please leave as soon as you can. And make sure Renton does not see you.
Setsuko: Thank you for doing the job so quickly, but... why?
Axel: I must protect Renton. Protect him from the world, and the foolish things his father did. That means he must stay in this peaceful place. And... I know he likes you a lot. If he sees you leaving, he'll follow.

Renton: So that's the problem! The compaq drive is missing.
    Eureka: I never used one.
Renton: Really? But LFOs cannot move without one! Even my scooter can't run without a compaq drive.
    Eureka: Nirvash... listens to me.
Renton: Really? Okay... let's install one and see if it works! No reaction? Weird.

    Suddenly, explosions outside!

Renton: Aaah, what is it this time? End of the world?

Dominic: Captain, we found the Type Zero!

Jurgens: Excellent. Men, our priority is this unit's capture. Try to minimize damage, but watch out - where is the Type Zero, Gekkostate is soon to follow. Move out, everyone!

Alex: It's the UF! What do we do... miss Setsuko?
Setsuko: I have enough of big governments abusing their power and muscling others around just because they're weak! Go away!
Jurgens: That machine... the database finds a match. Glory Stars, a Federation unit that went rogue and joined a paramilitary anti-government group. Capture that one, too!
Eureka: I will help you. Nirvash trusts you.
Setsuko: Really? Thank you... umm, Nirvash too.
Renton: A real battle, at my doorstep? For some reason... this doesn't look as hot as I thought it'd be...

Setsuko and Eureka face off against Jurgen's KLF force! The Skill Point condition is unknown for now (and will be for a while), so let's default to "destroy all enemies". Easier said than done - Balgora has a new attack, salvaged from destroyed unit 3, but enemies are plenty and use wide formations. And Nirvash doesn't pack a huge punch. At least it's nigh impossible to hit, and like I said a long time ago, Eureka has SP Regen. Spamming spirit skills is fun and easy - but for now, completely redundant.

Eureka: You will not hit me. Let's go, Nirvash.

Not a lot happens for the first two rounds - Monsoon KLFs attack Nirvash, miss, get counterattacked, a rare stray shot tries to hit Setsuko but fails, repeat. But then...

Axel: Renton! No time to explain - this is the Amita Drive. This is what Eureka came here for, and she flied off to fight because we could install it!
Renton: That's bad! What now, grandpa?
Axel: Ref up to her unit and give it to her, of course!
Renton: Woah! I can't do that!
Axel: You've been practicing reffing forever, just like that idol of yours, Holland. I know you can do it. Be a man, Renton! Eureka and Setsuko mean a lot to you, I can see that. Do it - for them.
Renton: Right! I'm all fired up now! Watch me, I'll do it - with a Cutback Drop Turn!

    Holland: Eureka, you okay?
Eureka: I'm not hurt. They are too slow to hit me.
Talho: Okay. All LFOs, deploy! Gekko Go, protect Nirvash!

Renton: Okay... is that Gekkostate? They're going to fight, and air will be full of gunfire any second now, I gotta make it quick! Calm down, this is what you've been wanting to do all the time. I practiced this for years. I can do it.
    Renton: I CAN FLY!
Holland: That's an... actual Cut Back Drop Turn? That kid copied my maneuver! But he did it so well!
Renton: I did it! I really made it!
Holland: Hey, Eureka - some kid just jumped into your cockpit. Want me to take him out?
Eureka: No, Holland. He is a friend.
    Renton: Eureka? You're that Eureka?
    Eureka: Yes, that is me.
Renton: My name is Renton Thurston!
Eureka: It's nice to meet you, Renton. I was waiting for this... Nirvash, too.
    Matthew: Is it really alright?
Hilda: Hey, you're riding with Stoner in your cockpit all the time, too.
Holland: Less talk, form on my wing. We're getting in!

    Eureka: Let's go, Nirvash!
Renton: Aaah! Sudden movements... my stomach...

The second Renton co-pilots Nirvash, it becomes a much better unit. And I don't mean his second spirit pool (no SP Regen here, folks!), although that helps. Eureka just... automatically becomes a much better, stronger pilot. And the new theme is not too bad, either. Okay, let me correct that: Days rocks. Eureka Seven's music rocks in general.

Holland: Amateurs! I'll show you what real reffing is all about.
Setsuko: I won't let you do anything evil anymore!
UF pilot: Argh! We're getting badmouthed and guilt-tripped at the same time!

The important thing to remember about here is: like in the previous Eureka Seven stage (but that was on the other route!), enemies prefer to target Nirvash. Even and especially if it means their deaths.

Renton: It's the military! What do we do, Eureka?
Eureka: We'll have to fight. There's no other choice.
Setsuko: I'll start the assault! Something tells me to go this way...

What could that be? My metagaming sense? Why, never! For now, just enjoy the music.

    Renton: Cut Back Drop Turn!
Eureka: No, this will be enough.
Jurgens: Shoot down the Gekko Go!
Ken-Goh: They're underestimating us. I have perfect aim on them!
    Talho: Alright, fire!

Jurgens: We're in trouble... where are the reinforcements?
Jerid: We, the Titans, are here! Fall back, UF. You cannot possibly handle enemies like these.
Jurgens: Yes, definitely trouble. Like if we needed the Titans.
Dominic: What do we do? What about the Type Zero?
Jurgens: We'll have to retreat for now. Tch!
Gidget: Talho! The Titans aren't all! Something is coming this way! A lot of large signatures!
    Setsuko: It's the AEUG!
Arthur: Captain, it's the Glory Star!
Setsuko: Minerva, Argama, can you hear me?
Bright: Loud and clear, Setsuko Ohara. We did not see each other for a while - are you still on our side?
    Setsuko: Yes!
Meyrin: Hey... what happened to Setsuko's teammates?
Lunamaria: That's right, there were three Glory Stars. Now there's only one.
    Kamille: Urgh... this tension!
    Shinn: Hey, Kamille, you alright?
    Kamille: Yeah, it's nothing.
Shinn: Okay, let's get these guys then!
Quattro: Kamille felt it too. This overwhelming pressure... a powerful Newtype is nearby. Someone to rival Amuro in power!

AEUG and ZAFT are here as friendly reinforcements! Or maybe we are reinforcements to them. One way or the other, this is where the battle really begins to pick up.

Reccoa: I finally got the Methuss. Time to show it off - less talk, more combat!

Right. But Methuss isn't the only new unit. Quattro isn't in a red Rick Dom anymore. No - now he has the one and only Hyaku Shiki.

Quattro: You cannot escape my movements. Go down!

There are Super Robot Wars titles where Hyaku Shiki is only a stepping stone, a mediocre unit that Quattro moves out of and hands down to some C-list pilot. This is NOT one of these titles. In Z, Hyaku Shiki is a solid, good unit. And it's golden. What's not to like?

Setsuko: Jack Carver... I'll have to use it again. Attack!
Talho: Everyone, get on the chopper! Er, Gekko Go.

Oh, and like I mentioned before, Setsuko has attacks of both Balgora units, 1 and 3. Not 2, because Toby is still alive, right? Right?

Federation pilot: The ZAFT amateurs are there!
Shinn: I'll show you an amateur! Rey, Luna, let's go!

Setsuko: Oh no... I got hit. But, I won't go down just yet!
Kamille: What! They managed to hit me, too!

What kind of Real Robot pilots are you people? Dodge better than that! At least they manage to push back - hard.

    Predictably, enemy reinforcements!

Kamille: Ack... this huge pressure again! Who is it?

Scirocco: Oh? This looks like AEUG. Taking this detour was worthwhile after all. Time to test this Messala mobile armor - in battle!
Quattro: It's Paptimus Scirocco... what is he doing on Earth? He was supposed to be on Jupiter!

And the Skill Point condition is revealed now: I have two turns to shoot Scirocco down. He runs away later. This isn't technically too hard, just focus all your guns on the boss. That is, if you remember that other enemies stay behind when he's down. If you're like me, who forgot that, then you'll try to minimize waste that comes from mooks running away, and down as much as possible before taking Scirocco out. And that's where the trouble starts.

Not to mention, Scirocco is no pushover. Jerid and Kacricon are around too, and they use line formations. Underestimate them and you get a situation like this.

So glad it didn't happen then.

Let's take out Kacricon first. Or at least destroy something from his squad, so he can't use Tri Attacks.

Kamille: Lt Kacricon? I'll finish him off!

Remaining HP, in two digits? Come on...

Jerid: Where're your Glory Star friends now, Setsuko? They won't protect you anymore!
Setsuko: Jerid... I'll have oppose the Titans with my own strength!
Holland: Finish off the damaged red unit!
Hilda: LFOs aren't too good at fighting land targets... but sure, let's stomp down a Titan or two!
    Talia: Minerva, full speed ahead!

Arthur: Captain, what are you trying to do?
Talia: We'll disrupt the Massala, of course. CIWS, fire! Aim for the sensors!

With his accuracy lowered, Scirocco is somewhat less dangerous.

Federation pilot: My weapon sucks at anti-air, but I'll take down that flying unit anyway!
Talho: Yeah, right. Counterattack with missiles!
Titan: Idiots, focus on land units! Like this!
    Setsuko: Ray Straight Turret!
    Titan: Gah!

Kacricon: I'll have to kill this guy.
Quattro: Not bad... but futile attacks won't work!
    Kacricon: What?!
Jerid: Kamille! Vengance will be mine! Today, you'll die by my hands!
Kamille: Bring it, Jerid. Ahh, surprise Scirocco!
Scirocco: Hmm, I'd say the test went alright this time.

Yes, Kamille dodged where he was defending, so I could've attacked anyway. Better to play it safe. And yes, Kacricon still didn't die. I feel he's overstaying his welcome.

    Kamille: Everyone, let's get Jerid!
Emma: Aren't you taking this vendetta a bit too far, Kamille?
Reccoa: As long as I can fire at the enemy, I'm okay!
Jerid: Why... why did I lose to THAT guy?!

Most mooks are out, all that's left is Scirocco.

Quattro: Newtype power that rivals Amuro's... let's see if you can fight as well as him, too.
    Scirocco: Heh, with pleasure.
Apolly: Focus, and support the captain. Fire!
Roberto: I'll just... defend myself for a bit.
Setsuko: I got your back, captain Quattro!

That was a long video, wasn't it? With clever use of Setsuko's support attack (now level two - two supports per round), Scirocco goes down, no problem. Shinn learns the Sense spirit skill now. About time, he could use some sense.

Scirocco: What? That's impossible... defeated, not even by a Newtype? Well, the test is over. I'll scadaddle for now.
Quattro: Tch, too fast! I can't follow him!
Bright: Do not chase after the mobile armor. Destroy the remaining Titan forces! Argama, fire the main cannons!

All hostiles are down. Victory is ours! Or is it!

Dominic: We were just pretending to be beaten. Here are the real reinforcements!
Jurgens: KLFs, surround the Type Zero!
    Stoner: Damn, they got Eureka!
Eureka: Nirvash... are they going to hurt you?
Renton: I know! The Amita Drive!
    Eureka: Yes?
Renton: Believe me! The Amita Drive - we'll just put it into Nirvash! Go!
Eureka: Something is happening with Nirvash now.
Renton: Uh oh, is it bad?
Eureka: No, it's okay! It's... something special, Renton!
Holland: Damn, that looks like the Seven Swell phenomenon. Don't tell me he... listen, everyone! Get out of here! Get away from Nirvash, now! And don't look at it, no matter what!
    Renton: Aaaaah!
Axel: So, despite my efforts, that poor kid gets dragged into it after all? There's no helping it now...

The post-mission talk is as long as the introduction this time, so let's spoiler it.
    Spoiler
    Show

Holland: All enemy KLFs turned into salt. Seven Swell... it's just like the last time.
Axel: Holland. What were you thinking, going back here? Renton already lost a father to all of this, you took away his sister too... and he will be next?
Holland: Yeah. Sorry. We just needed the Amita Drive. Didn't want to put the kid through all of this though.
Axel: Well, tough luck, because it seems you'll have to take care of him from now on, too.
    Holland: Wait, what?
Axel: He and Eureka... they really got something for each other. You know you can't seperate them now. Even if you just fly away, he'll follow you. On foot if he has to.
Holland: Seems like it... okay. I'll let him join the Gekkostate, but there's no going easy on newbies where I'm involved.

Renton: Eureka, did you hear that? I'll join the Gekkostate! We can stay together!
Eureka: I'm really happy. And, about Nirvash.
Renton: Nirvash really looked strange there for a moment... and what happened later, too.
Eureka: Yes, it was worrying. But now, Nirvash is no longer sick! It's a joyous occassion.
Renton: Hey, you think the Amita Drive helped? That means I'm a hero. Everyone on the Gekkostate will greet me like one!

Hap: Hey, who's the new guy?
Talho: The shrimp? Just some kid Holland picked up. Feel free to give him toughest jobs available.
    Renton: Huh?
    Matthew: I heard he's Eureka's "special person".
Hilda: Really? I expected someone... different. How disappointing.

Moondoggie: D'worry Renton, 's a rule on Gekko Go. New guys'll get pick'd on no matter what. Always.
Renton: Huh? Can I get a translator? Ow! Watch where you...

Maurice: Hey, why is he near Mama? Go away!

    Linck: He'll take Mama away?!

    Maeter: I hate him already!
Renton: Huh, kids on board? Mama? Who do they mean, Eureka?
Eureka: Me. I am their Mama.
    Renton: WHAAAAAT!

    Same time, on Argama:

Quattro: That pressure. It was Scirocco, no doubt about it.
Bright: I see. Do you suggest a course of action?
Quattro: We must finish construction of the mobile suit Kamille and me were working on. We need it to face people like Scirocco... and also, in case our sponsor turns out less trustworthy than he seems.
Bright: You talk about Durandal, Quattro. Why do you expect him to be a traitor?
Quattro: I have experience with treason.
Bright: I cannot disagree with that. On to the next issue...

Bright: I am glad to see you again, Setsuko.
Setsuko: I'm happy to see you too, captain Bright. I lost hope that I'd meet old friends again for a time...
Bright: But fate joined our paths again. What about the rest of the Glory Stars?
    Setsuko: Chief... is dead...
    Bright: ... I didn't know.
Setsuko: But Toby is still somewhere out there, and I have to find him! So, Captain... I'm sorry, but I cannot stay with you. I'll have to keep looking for him.
Bright: I understand. At least stay on board the Argama for as long as we travel in the same direction. The Balgora took damage so we will repair it too.
Setsuko: And I just had it serviced...

    In the UF's council room...

The Council of Sages: We cannot stop the Nirvash Type Zero with our own hands. So, because we're obviously out of our minds, let's release this sociopath from his holding cell.

Jamitov: Peace on Earth must be maintained. That man will be a useful tool in reaching that goal. Join us, Dewey Novak.

Dewey: So, the Council puts me in the freezer for an undeserved crime but now that you're too weak to handle simple things yourself, you release me?
    Jamitov: Indeed.
Council: We are ready to give you full control over the UF forces. Use whatever means you deem necessary. All we want is the current situation dealt with.
Dewey: I should technically harbor ill feelings... but I'll be grateful instead. This deal is fine with me. I will help you.

Jamitov: It's good to see you here, Paptimus Scirocco. How was your trip from Jupiter?
Scirocco: It was comfortable. The Messala is powerful enough to defeat that planet's gravity. I also encountered... resistance. The AEUG have some very interesting people within their ranks.
    Jamitov: What's on your mind?
Scirocco: For now, I'll keep it to myself. Don't worry. I have only the good of the Titans in my mind.

Intermission! The Bazaar is available, but I'd rather save Blue Stones for now. We're a bit short on cash, but upgrading weapons for squad leader units is still in the budget. The Gundams (and Hyakku Shiki) receive a boost in mobility too. LFOs don't need that, they dodge well enough.

Next chapter: Old friends reunited! Can you tell apart which aliens are bad and which aren't?

    ===========

To be honest: I am not 100% content with this update. It ate much more of my time than I'd expect for something of this length, and I'm not sure if the writing is up to my usual standards, whether comedic or serious. The long break really got to me, it seems. But eh, some things are more important than this LP. Let's just hope the next update will be better.

EDIT: Like almost always, I forgot to link one video. Fixed now, and here is what we missed. The character roster is so huge it barely fits in one post now, so I moved the organisation/term list to the first post of the thread.

Quattro should've used his red Rick Dias. Then he'd be able to catch Papti.

Also, I suggest loading Eureka's devil children into the missile tubes on the first opportunity. Nobody will mind.

But in this game, gold is just as fast as red. It's got Turn A Gundam in it, after all.

And Cubey, don't make me Hollandslap you, this update was great. Renton can fry, Setsuko snipes some bitches, and Scirocco's in it. What's not to like?

Okay, I know that in this video Scirroco doesn't really say "Oh, samurai kitty!" But the mondegreen still makes me giggle.

    Scirocco's real identity revealed!

Also, Nerdo - Holland doesn't slap people to make them feel better. He slaps people to make himself feel better. He's that kind of a guy. And I don't mean it as a compliment.

Underestimate them and you get a situation like this.
Ouch. Camille and Emma? Well, Emma is usually average at best but losing a main character like Camille is just...Ouch. Thank goodness it never happened.

Luckily it's not Fire Emblem, and you don't use units permanently. All you lose for a downed unit is a few thousand credits for repair costs - and of course, the inability to use it for the reminder of the mission. Which in that case... well, actually it didn't mean my chances to beat Scirocco went down to zero, but close enough.

And the repair costs aren't anything special, unless you lose an Evangelion or Ideon or some other unit which you don't want to go down because bad things happen according to its canon. But it's still annoying.

The $40k repair tag on Eva 01 in Alpha is pretty good punishment too. Especially since you HAVE to let it get trashed twice for two different secrets. At least Berserk 01 is fun to watch...

EDIT: also finally actually had time to read all of the last update. The only thing more pathetic than Renton's hitting on of Setsuko is how very, very in-character it is.

Well, I have to admit, Setsuko is growing on me. She continues to show an iron core that I hadn't noticed at all in previous missions. It seems as though not having anyone to rely on consistently, and having to make her own decisions, is making her grow up pretty rapidly.

Nice update, btw. Like Nerdo, I disagree with your self-deprecation; I thought it worked well. Not perhaps your best work, but still quite entertaining.

Setsuko's music in particular has sounded better and better over time to me. At first my response was "....Meh, pretty mellow, not that exciting" but now it charges me when it starts almost as much as Rand's (let's face it, it's hard to beat "GAN GAN LEON! GAN LEON!")

And, no, I didn't feel anything off about this post either, beyond the odd spelling error.

Edit: Also, is it "reefing" or "reffing"? Or is this a case of Spell My Name With An S?

The thing about Setsuko is that she starts very, very far away from being a badass, but gets much stronger in time. While Rand is awesome from the beginning, but has relatively less growth. I'm talking personality here, not their robots or skills - but on second thought, that too.

Surfing on trapar waves, whether by humans or LFOs, is explicitly known as reffing. No typos or alternative spelling involved.

Anyway, I'm glad you people liked the update more than I initially did. I did not hate it, I just wasn't completely happy with it. Let's continue the story now - I didn't write this post only to talk, y'know. Update is go!

    ===========

Chapter 13: Stand Tall, Warrior of Space!

Setsuko's quest brings her to the ocean. So, as a logical course of action:

Dust Filter off, Screw Module on. Try to refrain from making jokes of any kind.

    Introduction:
    Spoiler
    Show
Location: seaborne research center, Trinity City.

Kazami: Godsigma's development is progressing well. I wouldn't say smoothly, considering recent events, but we're ahead of schedule.

Marcino: I hope so. We waited long enough - it's time for some results!
Kazami: There will be results, I assure you.
Marcino: Good. I didn't blow all that money just so you could have a pet project. I need both Godsigma and Trinity Energy, and I need them soon. Well, I'm a busy man, so I'll go now. The next time we meet, I expect the project to be completed.
Julie: What an impatient man... Trinity Energy is not a toy. Do we really have to cooperate with him?
Rie: Godsigma would never be built without his funding, but is that really a good choice of action? I have a feeling he won't use it for good things.
Queenstain: I on the other hand would not mind receiving funding, even from people like him. Some sacrifices must be made if we want to protect the Earth.
Getsuei: Blue Fixer is in dire straights since we left the Federation and lost its support and funds. Our units are vastly underpowered... I hope Raita and Oliver won't get killed.

People other than the Godsigma team and Blue Fixer were on board the Trinity City. For example...

Kouji: Look who just landed! Setsuko, you're safe!
Setsuko: Nice to see friendly faces again, Kouji.
Kappei: Hey, it's Setsuko! I knew she wasn't dead after all!
Keiko: That's nice... but what kind of comment is that?
Touga: Eiji! It's the nice lady from before.
Eiji: I am standing right here, you doofus.
Setsuko: Is everyone fine? I don't see Duke Fleed or Hikaru... did they...
Maria: Of course not! Brother is healthy!
Kouji: Shortly after the whole world collission business, Daisuke had a change of heart. He said he must find sense in life, and went on some kind of "spiritual journey". And Hikaru went after him.
Maria: At least Vegans aren't attacking us anymore. You think they all died when the worlds collided?
Kappei: If they're dead, I hope they dragged Butcher to Hell, too.
Uchuuta: Yeah, I wouldn't count on it. Ah, right - Eiji. Wanna tell Setsuko why you're here?
    Touga: It's training!
Mizuki: That's right. You probably know about Japan, don't you Setsuko?
Setsuko: I heard rumors... that it cut off all contact with outside.
Eiji: But before it did that, Sandman sent us all out. We're supposed to protect population of the Earth from bad guys and get stronger along the way.
Touga: We met many different people along the way! And we grew stronger, too!
Eiji: Yeah, stronger. But not much smarter, huh?
Luna: You're the one who didn't grow smarter at all, Eiji!

Minako: Hey, don't forget about me!
Setsuko: Oh, right! ... Umm, who are you?
Minako: I'm Minako. Toshiya's future fiancee, so don't even think about stealing him from me, okay?
Setsuko: I never tried to do anything like that...
Minako: Oh, and there he comes!

Toshiya: Heh, everyone seem to be enjoying themselves... someone's running here? What, Kiraken?!

Kiraken: Toshiya! So glad to see you, man. I just had to break through the front lines! Never thought I'd make it out there alive.
Toshiya: Front lines... wait, are you talking about the space front near Jupiter? It can't be... you mean!
Kiraken: Yes! The aliens who attacked our Jupiter colony... they will be right here!
    Toshiya: Damn, an alarm!
    Kiraken: Correction, they ARE here!

Rie: Alarm! An unidentified craft is here!
Kazami: It doesn't look like anything we've seen before.
Rie: That signal... it looks like it's calling for help!
Queenstein: Raita, Oliver, move out. Pick it up, but be careful. It could be a trap.
Oliver: Roger that. Getting in... no abnormalities.
    Rie: Alarm, again! Hostiles incoming!
Raita: Bah, it was a trap!
Kiraken: No, it's them this time. The aliens that destroyed our home!
Minako: Toshiya, watch out! Don't let them hurt you!

All of my units deploy, including Setsuko and King Bael, whose crew didn't have a chance to say a line yet. At least, in this LP. Toshiya is here, but still in his dinky little robot. Skill Point objective: kill all enemies, you got 4 turns, go!

Kouji: The fighters look like smallfry, I'll go straight for the big hydra!
Maria: Kouji, watch out! Don't get killed!
Kouji: Such little damage is not enough to take Kouji Kabuto down!

And I just unlocked a secret! That's right, this mission had one - I have to let Kouji get hit.

    Touga: Grankaiser, moving forward.
Eiji: Alright! What you say in a situation like this? Stay frosty.
Touga: Keep the airwaves free of chatter.
Eiji: Woah, I'm starting to prefer the Doofus Touga.

I notice two things about Harpy Fighters. First: they are pilotted by Space Black Knight. Second: they're so puny, it's physically impossible to attack and not destroy one. Even if the attacker is Space Emperor.

Space Black Knight: For Eldar's sake!
Kouji: Hmm, needs more manly spirit! Also, Eldar - what?

    Suddenly!
    ...
Yes, I realize "suddenly" became my catchphrase in this Let's Play.

    Anyway, suddenly!

Julie: Professor, what are these things?
Rie: They are attacking Trinity City!
Queenstein: We must stop them! Wait... they are fighting against the first wave of attackers, too?
Getsuei: I believe they were following the craft we intercepted. Raita is trying to open it now. I wonder who - or what, will we find inside?

Uchuuta: Are you asleep again, Kappei?
Kappei: Shut up, again! I'll destroy them all. Buster Missile!

The new opponent is more numerous, but not much stronger... if at all. The Eldar first aliens at least have two hydra-like monsters.

Kouji: Alright! Let's spread out and take as many of them as possible all at once!
Maria: Okay, let's go! Spark Bomber!
Touga: Following up on this strategy.
Setsuko: Me, too. Gunnery Carver - please, hit!

What I'm trying to achieve here is eliminating as many... translucent blue things... from each group as possible. If there's only one enemy left in a squad, it will foolishly attack and surely die on a counterstrike. That's the plan.

Which is suddenly thwarted by enemies deciding to hit each other instead!

The (pretty cool in my opinion) theme song you listened to just now is a musical spoiler. Forget you ever heard it.

Heizaemon: They're attacking King Bael? Too weak to penetrate our armor, I'm afraid.
Kappei's grandma: Kick their asses, dear!
    Ichitaroh: Firing the missiles!

Destroying this enemy brings us more reinforcements. And not of the friendly kind!

Ritsu: This is Captain Ritsu of the Eldar. Surrender the Trinity Energy immediately!
Toshiya: So you can destroy more colonies? Never!
Kazami: I will not bow down to your demands.
Ritsu: I expected as much. Which is why I brought this Cosmosaurus along. Go, destroy everything!
    Toshiya: Aaaaaah!
    Kiraken: Toshiya!
Minako: Oh no! Someone, help him! He can't die here!
Raita: The cavalry is here! Blue Fixer, charge!
Oliver: We cannot hide in a corner and do nothing forever! We got your back, Toshiya. Retreat to Trinity City.
Luna: And transform! The Godsigma is more or less ready, right?
Kouji: Go for it, we'll cover you!
    Toshiya: Thanks, guys!
    Kazami: Kiraken, Julie. Get ready.

Toshiya: I didn't know Godsigma was completed already.
Julie: We had to keep it as a secret from Marcino. He would confiscate it and use it as a tool for his dirty business.
    Kiraken: Okay, let's go!

Raita: Argh! We're getting a beatdown here!
Oliver: Maybe charging in with outmatched vehicles wasn't such a smart idea...
Gengoroh: We'll have to move in and set up a protective barrage!
Heizaemon: No need. Here come our reinforcements.
Toshiya: Sigma Formation! Trinity Charge! Space Emperor - Godsigma!
Ritsu: So that is the strength of a robot powered by Trinity Energy? But don't be afraid. This battleship still has enough firepower to bring you down!

Kappei: Heh! Try harder next time!
Uchuuta: I can't believe, Zambot 3 dodged something...
Julie: Watch out, Toshiya. Here comes the enemy!
Toshiya: God Shield! Not bad, not bad! And for my counterattack... God STING!

The best way to describe Godsigma in one word is - reliable. It's almost painfully typical for Super Robots, tough and sturdy, with three pilots, and its attacks are powerful but energy-inefficient. But Toshiya has a good Skill attribute, so he blocks, parries and crits often. And the robot itself has a trick up its sleeve...

Gengoroh: Fire the main cannon at the Cosmosaurus.
    Ichitaroh: Yes, Father! Fire!
Julie: I've analyzed the battleship's structure. It has a weakness we can exploit!
    Kiraken: Toshiya, use the Musouken!
    Toshiya: Got it, Kiraken! MUSOUKEN!
Ritsu: Don't screw with me, Earthlings! And what are these flies attacking me now? Launch all Harpies, shoot them down!
Kouji: Woah! Watch out, watch out!

Things were looking pretty good. Only one turn (and an enemy phase) are left as far as time is considered, but the Cosmosaurus is almost dead, Ritsu's ship has only like 50% HP, and other enemies don't really matter. Or do they?

    Because this happens:

Touga: All Gran Divas, attack the enemy.
    Eiji: Alright, got it!
Eina: Grankaiser is seriously damaged, is that alright? Oh no, another enemy is coming!
Mizuki: Touga, get out of there!
Touga: Too much damage. I cannot continue fighting!
Eina: Master Touga got shot down!
Luna: Eiji, you idiot! That's your fault, you distracted him!
Mizuki: Speak up, Touga! Are you alright?
Touga: I managed to activate the escape mechanism. I am sorry.
Luna: Don't be stupid! All that matters is you're still alive!
    Leele: ... I'm glad...

So, yeah. Grankaiser is a pretty soft target before it turns into Gravion. You have to handle it with care or something like that happens.

Kappei: Not bad, monster! But you won't eat Zambot, Arm Punch!
Ritsu: I'm in the picture too!
Toshiya: Not for long! Musouken, again!

Last turn for me to act. Well, I technically have more time, but what's the challenge in playing when you know you missed the Skill Point?

Ritsu: At least they cannot find my unit's weakness again!
    Keiko: Ahem.

    Ritsu: Blast!
Kappei: Okay, let's do it - with spirit! Zambot's surefire kill, Moon Attack!
Heizaemon: Use the lasers to take out the last hydra!

Offscreen, I may add. And also, I still have no idea how the hydra-like enemies are called. Are they Cosmosaurii too? Can't be.

Okay, time to reveal Godsigma's trump card. Trinity Energy is a wonderful source of power, so the unit can refill its EN fully once per battle!

Julie: The generator is working fine. We're full of juice, you can use the Musouken again!
Toshiya: Don't mind if I do!
Ritsu: Damn! Close call, Godsigma, but you don't have me down yet!
Setsuko: Sneak attack from under the water!
    Ritsu: Argh! Retreat, everyone retreat!

Kazami: Excellent work! You managed to repel the aliens that pestered Trinity Energy research since the very beginning!
Queenstein: They tried to kill you all and seize your research. I wouldn't use the word "pester" here.

    The battle is won, but...

Grankaiser's repair costs me 9000 credits. OUCH! I could've really used that money for something else.

What about the mysterious unit Blue Fixer retrieved? This and other mysteries, in the post-mission spoiler box!
    Spoiler

Marin: Where am I? This feels so familiar...

Marin: The sea? It looks so beatiful and unspoiled. And, a lone figure! Wait, I know you... don't go! Wait! WAIT!

    Marin: WAIT!

Jamie: Hey, cool down! You're safe. Nobody's going to hurt you here.
Oliver: It looks like he's awake now. And he talks our language, too.
Raita: Yeah, but that craft wasn't of human design. Who is he?
Marin: My name is Marin. So, I did it... I am on Earth now.
    Oliver: What do you mean?
Marin: I come from planet S-1.
Raita: What, an alien? But you look human!

And while aliens that look like humans are concerned...

Jeerah: Commander, Ritsu has returned. He met unexpected resistance and failed in his mission.

Teral: Trinity Energy is still outside our grasp then. We need a plan... I cannot afford to fail here. Eldar will be ruined unless we succeed!

    And, back to Earth:

Sandman: So, after further consideration, I have decided to support Trinity City financially.
Kazami: Thank you, mr Sandman. That's excellent news!
Sandman: You lost mr Marcino's funding, and I will not let it be for brave souls to suffer because others do not acknowledge them! As long as you are a friend to justice, professor, you should not worry about small details like money or approvisation. We will talk again when Japan's airwave blockade allows me to again. Sandman, over and out.
Maids: Uwaah! That was so cool, Master Sandman!
Sandman: I am afraid that is not all that is to this. Even my coffers are not endless - funding gigantic warriors is a costly investition. Moreover, Grankaiser suffered serious damage and its repairs are not cheap either. I am afraid we will have to sell our castle!
Raven: Master, are you really willing to...
Sandman: Indeed! My conscience is clear, and I am ready to live without a roof over my head if it means those who oppose evil have more tools to fight with!
Raven: In that case, I will follow you wherever you go, Master Sandman.
    Maids: Us, too!

    Kappei: Stay with us, Setsuko!

Setsuko: Thank you for the offer Kappei, but... I can't. I must rescue Toby. This is my mission now. I promise we'll all be together when I finally find him.
Kappei: Okay. In that case, good luck!
Kouji: Hang in there, Setsuko. Don't let aliens eat you alive!
    Touga: Good-bye!
Eiji: You look happy for someone who almost got killed...

Setsuko leaves her friends behind, to continue the search. But we will stay with them for a while yet, at least for the intermission.

Because there's an interesting thing to buy at the bazaar. What, you didn't know Trinity City has one?

Maria: What's that thing on sale over there? It looks familiar...
Kouji: Hey, it's a part of Double Spazer's wing! It must've fallen off when I took a hit during the fight.
Maria: It's your property, buy it back!
Kouji: Right. And I just know how to use it, too...
Julie: Why do you need Trinity City's workshops, Kouji?
Kouji: I've built a small flying unit once. Too bad the Vegans shot it down, the bastards! But if I use Z Alloy, I can remake it. Stronger, better, faster, you know the drill.
Touga: I didn't know you were an engineer, Kouji!
Kouji: Hehe - believe it or not, I'm not an uneducated idiot.

    What a shocking twist!

And for upgrades proper, 2 ranks in weapons for all squad leader-worthy units. Except Grankaiser, which gets only 1 rank. That's the price of getting shot down!

Next chapter: A shocking switch of sides! Will a fort of brave, independent people get conquered by invaders from the Moon?

The King of Hearts Generic Super Robots is here to smite the enemies with his Shining Finger Sword! And the return of Sandman, who's as awesome as always.

A man named Julie and a woman named Jamie? What the hell, eighties Japan.

EDIT: In case you don't know what Space Black Knight is, check this out. Watch to the end for an awesome plot twist!

What's really kind of sad is that it's a pretty neat-looking zero-G swordfight.

Let me make you feel better by pointing out that most of the frames are stolen from the last episode of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Hmmm, Ritsu is pretty damn ugly for a space elf.

Also i could have sworn this was a different map, even while reading the beginning of it. Another, much more elaborate map where you face two bosses and an octopus.

Ritsu may be ugly, but Teral bumps up the average race prettiness. At least as far as low-budget early 80s animation allows. So pretty, Teral is even voiced by a woman.

Of course, if TVTropes is to be believed (and I have doubts about it, because I didn't see this anywhere else other than this one article):

"Commander Teral from God Sigma is literally a woman in a fairly masculine man's body. Ironically, she's the noble prince-type of the story despite being one of the main villains (Cubey's note: more like an anti-villain, really). She gets very little snark, which is pretty open-minded for an early 80s show."

But if it's true then it's pretty progressive for its time.

And I know which mission you refer to. But no, that one comes later.

Is permitting Grankaiser to get shot down a secret? I find it interesting that Sandman specifically references expensive repairs for it before selling his home.

No, it's not a secret. I just made that line up... like many others, as Tengu said. But the part about Sandman having to sell his castle is in the script. Don't worry, he gets it back.
