Default [4E] Tomb of Horrors IC

After many days of travelling, you have arrived at your destination: the bright city of Ravenstar, the former northern capital of the once great Empire of Narath. Straddling the Nentir River, it reflects the morning light like a giant pearl, the various spires of the temples and palaces glinting with the rising of the sun.

The vast gates of the city are opened and you enter Ravenstar amid the throng of the morning crowd. The city is busy and bustling. You pass through the narrow streets of the trades district on your way towards the centre of town. Here and there you get brief flashes of gold above the tops of the buildings, but its only when the narrow street widens into a broader avenue that you see that this is from the sundisc atop the shining white Temple of Pelor.

The doors to the temple are guarded, though mainly to keep order than stop any perceived threat as people, clergy and laity, and moving in and out freely. The guards are two paladins, one of them looks up as you approach.

Hail, brother, says the Paladin, he makes some motions of deference towards Arthur and he's rather young, not past his first beard, High Priest Velir will be most please to see you have returned. There was some concern about your delay, and his orders are that you should be admitted at once. Please.

He steps aside to let you through, noticing but not commenting on the varied nature of the party accompanying Arthur.

    Travok - Dwarf Battlemind

Travok nods to the guards, though he can't help but compare them with the guards at the Temple of Moradin back home. They look underarmed, with those glorified sticks for weapons and armor made of less metal than a dwarf would use for a nightshirt. He turns back to the temple, the ornate stone and the shining sun atop. It looks gaudy. He reminds himself that Pelor is, by all accounts, a decent god. Even the priests of Moradin say so, and Arthur's an all right fellow. He'd seen him in action enough to appreciate him, even if he did have a weird aversion to shedding blood himself. Still, it's hard to shake the impression that for all Pelor's good traits, he's still a human god.

He sticks close to Maharal. Dwarves have to stick together.

I may have overdone the dwarf pride here. I may end up backing off later. And I also established that Travok considers Maharal a fellow dwarf, even if he does look different.

Aki ignores the guards as he steps into the temple. He looks about him as he follows Arthur - who presumably knows where he's going - taking in the architecture and decoration of the building. How... ostentatious. But they do good work, I suppose.

The metallic man tilts his head, looking to the others as they speak. He looks to the paladins then. "Business? It appears more that they exist for military service in pursuance to a theological belief system. While capable in their own means, I do not see how they are linked to mercantile practices." He continues to walk, eyes looking over the paladins, then the building itself, focusing primarily on the structure.

    Maharal

This city is... most impressive. The buildings are tall and soaring, reaching far higher than any Dwarven dwelling would. Still, though, the bright glinting of Pelor's sundisk brought him a sense of serenity; while Maharal still followed the teachings of Moradin, as related to him by his father Lobe and his friend Travok, he had found Pelor to be a most amenable god as well. Surely he would watch over a place such as this, preventing it from coming to harm.

Still, though, there are disquieting things about. Dimble and KT were chattering with each other, and that... that gnome is playing off his naivete. Had he ever been so... so innocent of the world? It was hard to even imagine it. Glancing at Travok sticking nearby him, Maharal felt conflicted; in many ways he'd been raised as a Dwarf himself, and Travok had always treated him as one, but were his true origins closer to this creature than his friend? It was a sobering thought.

He meant that they are focused on their tasks, KT-937. It is a commonly used expression to indicate their... serious nature, not a statement of their occupation. Turning to Dimble, Maharal frowns reprovingly. And you! Don't mock him. It is extremely impolite to take advantage of his youth.

He regards Maharl before speaking, "Thank you for speaking in my defense, but I must correct you. I am not young by the standards of most sentient beings.. By my best estimation I am 574 years of age. Admittedly, the vast majority of that was spent deactivated."

When Rynthel asks his question, KT answers, "I am a sentient automoton, created to serve as part of the Iron Legion of Jhardia. Manufactured from raw material batch K, combat function T, automoton number 937. I cannot speak for Maharl, however. I do not know what he is, either, besides a member of this troop, just as you are."

    Arthur

It had been a while since Arthur had seen Ravenstar in all the glory of the midmorning sun. The temple was a welcome sight as he passed through the city. Although he was pleased to have found adventurers to assist in the task the Church had set him, he knew that adventurers could be unreliable, and so expected the look he had seen in the paladin's eyes, and amongst the eyes of some of the townsfolk. "I thank you brother, we will proceed to meet with High Priest Velir immediately." Arthur says with a tilt of his head, leading the group deeper into the temple.

You walk through the temple which, aside from the pilgrims and faithful you can see here and there, is rather empty of people. This is more and more apparent as you continue inside and only one young acolyte attempts to challenge you going into the inner chambers. After a brief conversation, he goes in search of High Priest Velir and then returns to escort you to his chambers.

High Priest Velir is seated when you enter, reading a letter which he puts aside with a shake of his head. He's a tall man, taller than the tallest of you, with white hair and bear that cascades in curls down his chest and shoulders. Velir wears the robes of a simple priest, and his only mark of rank is the gold circlet he wears and the gold samite stole around his neck. Yet curiously, he is wearing well-worn carpet slippers.

He remains seated and examines you all in turn, though not unkindly.

Well met, Brother Pallen, he says, nodding to Arthur, and I see by the look of your companions that you have succeeded. But introductions can wait, as I know you all are wondering why you are here. He clears his throat and continues. We, the faithful of Pelor, are normally content and able to look after our own and assist where we can with our own brethern...but different circumstances call for different measures, as you will soon be aware.
As part of our edict with the lords of the city, we are bound to protect those who seek it for good and noble reasons, yet recent events have this...somewhat difficult.
You are adventurers, and no doubt you are aware that now and again there are trouble with the roads. Normally we are able to deal with the occassional brigand or bandit, but this seems to be somewhat of a different nature.
It has been sometime since a caravan has been able to travel north unscathed, we even took the precaution of sending protection with them but they have not returned either.
And so, a fortnight ago, we sent as party of faithful to investigate this...they have not returned. This was when I sent word to you, Brother Pallen, to gather whom you could to look into this and perhaps even succeed where we have not. He looks at you again, and though Velir is reserved, his plea seems sincere.

Glancing around at the group around him, Maharal's lip quirked into a smile. "We would certainly make a somewhat more... varied caravan guard than I have seen before, but I'm not sure that is what he meant. If we are to investigate these attacks, I would ask for as much information as you could give us about the composition of those who have not returned."

Settling back slightly, Maharal begins to tick off his fingers. "Did your group of faithful pose as a caravan or replace the normal caravan guards, or did they set off to retrace the steps? Were the previous caravans carrying anything in common, or were they varied? If we do come across them or their... remains, is there anything in particular we should look for so as to confirm who they are?"

Arthur turned to Maharal, his aged face framed with worry, but his eyes brimming with determination. "I doubt it would have made a difference to brigands whether it was a caravan or a religious procession. Either makes an attractive target, as brigands are often short of basic provisions and any form of proper medical treatment. The Church is not foolish, however, Maharal, the group would not have left without proper protection. What, I assume, High Priest Velir wishes of you is that unpredictability. Even if we do not look like the most valuable or vulnerable target, we may provoke sufficient curiosity, or a certain aura of wariness in whatever has preyed upon the missing. In that we may succeed where others of the faith had failed.

He turned to High Priest Velir, " I would like to leave as soon as my accomplices can be made ready, High Priest. I fear that the longer we wait the colder the trail we follow will be. However, I feel it would be best to fulfil their curiosity as much as possible now, so we can be sure of our purpose..

Jadira walked through the city of Ravenstar, content to listen to her newfound co-adventurers chatter amongst themselves while whistling a merry tune to herself. In truth, the diminuative human was desperately trying to keep her hands in her pockets and her bright blue eyes off of everyone's belongings. No sense in finding more trouble now, she thought to herself. She was already in pretty deep, throwing her lot in with a bunch of strangers.

The two living constructs intruiged her; several times she 'accidentally' tripped and used one to regain her balance. They were metal all right, she determined. But they moved more fluidly than almost any knight in armor.

Arthur seemed like every other member of the clergy Jadira had had the 'fortune' of meeting. She got the feeling the two would soon rub each other the wrong way and paid him little mind.

Dimble... Dimble seemed like her kinda guy, though that still remained to be seen.

The drow made her uneasy. 'Bedroom eyes', they called it. She was used to letchers oogling her, but he seemed different, in a... vacant sort of way. Either way, she moved away from him anytime they were close to each other in the marching order. She also muttered something about 'sleeping her my ass to the wall' once.

At the temple, Jadira looked nervous. Everything was bright, brighter than she reasonably liked, and full of clergyfolk. And shiny things. Shiny, possibly valuable things. Yanking off a glove with her teeth, she idly began chewing on her nails, even as the High Priest spoke. Moments into the conversation, she realized her companions left out one major little detail. The tiny human stepped foward.

"Hey there, High Priest, sir," she began. "Avandra's grace and pleasure to meet ya. M'name's Jadira, one of this here motley crew, and, well, I hate to be the sour grape or whatever ya call it but, well, no disrespct sir, I haven't heard a word about... you know... compensation. Ya know, time, gold, equipment, loss of life and limb. Standard adventurer's fee."

Travok nods. "The half-- er, hum-- um, young woman has a point," Travok says, blushing furiously at his stumble. Jadira looks human, but she's his own height, about the right size for a halfling, and way too small for an adult woman. He's still not clear whether she's a human or a halfling. "And it's not crass to ask about payment up front." He turns to the priest. "As I'm sure you're aware, adventurers' best income comes in the form of spoils from battle. But often, there are no such spoils. We escort the caravan, or defeat the bandits, or find the missing cat or whatever, accomplish our mission and go home. It's not as if the gods place a treasure of appropriate value for experienced adventurers in a chest right in the middle of the rabid wolf's cave. That would be awfully contrived. So, it's appropriate to ask about commensurate compensation."

OOC: Okay, I couldn't help mocking the tendency of DMs everywhere to put appropriate treasure in wildly inappropriate places. I figure "real life" adventurers would get most of their living expenses paid by those who hire them. It's not like every caravan they get hired to protect would be attacked by unbelievably wealthy bandits, or that they'd track down a rabid wolf only to find that it'd taken over a treasure cave.

"Excellent. Gathering sufficient information before we set forth should allow us a better chance of locating the source of the problem."

Listening to the note of worry in the High Priest's voice, Maharal takes stock of the guards. There was definitely tension in the air, and it would not have been easy abduct or kill four of Pelor's paladins. Something more than a simple robber band was underfoot, although without knowing more details it was impossible to be certain of what.

"I believe that compensation will be adequate. And please forgive my companion for her choice of words. She is... all business." He regards the other members of the party to exmine them and their reactions. "Do you have maps of the area, perhaps. It would aid us in our duties."

    Travok - Dwarf Battlemind

Travok nods. "The compensation sounds about right."

"Works for me. I'm more interested in getting things done. Some Paladin of Corellon blathered on at me once about how Corellon calls us to protect the beauty of the world and seek out and destroy things that make it ugly. Sounds like who or whatever is doing this is rather doing quite a bit to make the world uglier. I'd like to stop them," Rynthel says, with a shrug. He seems torn between the knowledge that learning more information is a good thing and wanting to get going already.
Every time you spell Corellon wrong, Gruumsh gets excited and kills a kitten. Please, think of the kittens.

RIP Eltain Sharma, Chosen of Corellon, and Frank, his faithful Celestial Pegamule. May you find the peace you sought.
