    Default [3.5] Generalist Wizard Ideas

    Hi Playgrounders!

I'm looking for ideas for my new character which is level 5 generalist wizard level 5 incantatrix.
I don't want to have a familiar. So are there any variants for this? I want to exchange familiar for a worthy thing. (Even for a feat) I know "immediate magic" is a good but it's specialist only option.
Also any other wizard variants would be good.

All Forgotten Realms, DND 3.5 books and Dragon Magazines are available.

Um, there is a flaw in a dragon magazine called "Loner" which gives up your familiar for a feat. This can be worth it. Forgot which issue, but if you google it you could probably find it.

Otherwise, if you are an elf, the Elven Generalist sub level is pretty good. Gives you +1 spell/day of the highest level you can cast. Grey Elves have +2 Int/Dex, generally considered high priority for wizards. The -2 Con kinda hurts, but is doable.

There's Eidetic spellcaster. Trades your familiar for the ability to maintain your spells in your head instead of your spellbook. You use special incense instead of special ink when "scribing" new spells. Good if your DM likes prison scenarios.

Not uber, but a personal preference because I like paranoid Mages.

I've checked the elven generalist and liked it. I'll take one level from that class.
Also I don't think Eidetic Spellcaster could work for me.

Another thing you could do is just have an "offscreen" familiar. If you don't mention it and keep it well pocketed, it shouldn't be a target. Then just write +2 fort save or +3 HP or whatever on your character sheet and call it good. Don't use it to scout or deliver touch spells or anything like that.

I would recommend the Domain wizard variant (UA) over first level of the elven generalist wizard...unless your DM says you can have both.

I would take the third level of elven wizard substitution levels and use it in conjunction with a hummingbird familiar from Dragon Magazine 323 pg 98 to get a +8 bonus to initiative.

Elven Generalist is one of the few reasons to be a Generalist, imo.

And it's a great reason, too; no barred schools, and only your highest-level spells matter, really.

+1 for the loner flaw, too. Bonus points if you later take a Prestige Class that grants a familiar and your DM lets you pick another feat.
