Norse Runes!
I've done a bit of studying of old Futhark, Norse runes. They're quite fantastic and interesting. Other than all the stuff about divining with them, they are also used as symbols. The most interesting way this is done is with bindrunes: taking multiple runes and combining them into one symbol. It's quite entertaining to do! It's often done for initials. Has anyone here seen this symbol before?
It's JRR Tolkein's symbol. If you look carefully, it's a stylized combination of the roman characters J, R, R, and T.
I have designed two from my own initials, although ironically neither of them are for my ACTUAL initials, but those of other names I use. These being:
DF:
and AA:
So, if anybody wants me to make a bindrune out of their initials, I can gladly (Credit would be cool if you sig it, by the way. )
An important note! There is no C in Futhark. So if you have a C in your name, would it be pronounced like a K, like an S, or like a CH? (Added bonus, if you have a T, which is actually a name starting TH, I can use Thurisaz instead of Tiwaz, as it'd be more apt)
Here's a good website for basic info on Futhark, by the way. http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/index.htmlLast edited by Icewalker; 2010-11-02 at 04:21 PM.

Re: Norse Runes!
I had a bit of trouble with this one: J and D are interesting to combine, they kind of work, but they're also very awkward together. After fiddling with it for a while, I flipped it, reversed the J, and then found I could do this, and I quite like how it turned out.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
A:
Ansuz: Wisdom, Communication, Power of words. Odin's rune.
J:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
D:
Dagaz: Breakthrough, Transformation, Daylight clarity.
This one was quick! I made two, very similar, one of them has Raidho reversed, and makes it a little more compact. I love Raidho, it fits together with so many other runes, and I love the meaning of it...
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
J:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
A:
Ansuz: Wisdom, Communication, Power of words. Odin's rune.
R:
Raidho: Travel, Rhythm
Also quite quick. I gave you two options again, depending on whether you want the Raidho especially subtle, or especially obvious. But it's there in both.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
R:
Raidho: Travel, Rhythm
P:
Perthro: Secrets, The occult, Divination
G:
Gebo: Gift (as sacrifice and generosity), Exchanges
This was just the easiest thing ever. Hagalaz and Kenaz fit together easily and cleanly in only one spot, and it works.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
H:
Hagalaz: Wrath of nature, trial
K:
Kenaz: Vision, Knowledge, Creativity, Harnessed power
That's the first batch done! And I see I've gotten just as many again while I did it.
Sweet.

Re: Norse Runes!
Oy! All you guys want two!
S'fine. I love names, so multiple names is just always good with me.
This one came together much more easily than I expected. You could put that downward angled line on the left instead of the right, it makes Hagalaz just the same either way.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
Z:
Algiz: Protection, defense, guardian
E:
Ehwaz: Transportation, progress, teamwork
H:
Hagalaz: Wrath of nature, Trial
Ah, now here we get interesting. There isn't technically a Y. Jera is used for Y. Now, this means your rune has Jera twice. This means symmetry and fantastic. A double Jera is going to look awesome...now I need to make it.
Ok, I came out with two, and I really like both of them. Jera is one of the most interesting runes.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
J and Y:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
P:
Perthro: Secrets, The occult, Divination
Funny...four letter initials, and they're four of the simplest runes. If I really combined them, this could be smaller than most of the others here. Although many of them would be obscured and combined within other runes if I did that, and that's not the point!
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
E:
Ehwaz: Transportation, progress, teamwork
I:
Isa: Challenge, a standstill
K:
Kenaz: Vision, Knowledge, Creativity, Harnessed power
W:
Wunjo: Joy, Comfort, Pleasure, Recognition of worth
AS is awkward. Ansuz and Sowilo really just don't line up well together at all.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
A:
Ansuz: Wisdom, Communication, Power of words. Odin's rune.
S:
Sowilo: Success, Honor, Health
Now, there is no C, in Futhark. There are two alternatives, depending on pronunciation, as it is phonetic, Kenaz (K) and Sowilo (S). So, tell me which way it's pronounced, and I'll use the more accurate one. (If it's Ch, then it's best approximated by K-J, so I'm not sure what to do in that case. I guess I'd use a subtle Kenaz and Jera, seeing as Kenaz is already part of Jera that's easy enough.)
KM on the other hand, I can do!
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
K:
Kenaz: Vision, Knowledge, Creativity, Harnessed power
M:
Mannaz: Mankind, The self, Friends and enemies, Intelligence
So, I made two bindrunes here. The first is JDS, and the second is JDR, or also JDS because Sowilo can be done in a second way (see the spoiler). The second doesn't interweave as nicely as some, but I like the fact that it can be both JDR or JDS.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
J:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
D:
Dagaz: Breakthrough, Transformation, Daylight clarity.
R:
Raidho: Travel, Rhythm
S:
OR
Sowilo: Success, Honor, Health

Re: Norse Runes!
I love the way the meanings flow into one another visually. Progress forms the backbone of the character, flowing constantly throughout. It's abrupty divided by a challenge. Creativity and vision burst through it, carrying progress with it, and finally, giving way to comfort and the recognition of worth.

Re: Norse Runes!
I like all the being loved forever I'm getting for this. Most pleasant. This is why I love the Playground so much.
These are in fact my initials (different order, which isn't important for bindrunes), JRG. So I could use this too. But, my other names are more deserving of magic.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
R:
Raidho: Travel, Rhythm
G:
Gebo: Gift (as sacrifice and generosity), Exchanges
J:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
Same as I noted a few above, there isn't a C in Futhark, but pick K or S from phonetics and I can do it no problem!
SEJK...This one is interesting. S, J, and K have a lot of redundancy (Jera and Sowilo are actually both made of up one Kenaz and one flipped Kenaz). So I'm going to make a couple, with varying degrees of prominence of different characters, see what you think comes out best!
...Ok, with so much overlap, there is an incredible range of options to combine these. They work really well around Ehwaz as a base, too. I made four, and honestly I could keep going for quite a while...
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
S:
Sowilo: Success, Honor, Health
E:
Ehwaz: Transportation, progress, teamwork
J:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
K:
Kenaz: Vision, Knowledge, Creativity, Harnessed power
Worked out pretty well, I think. I like nesting runes like Ansuz or Fehu inside of bigger ones with triangles, like in the first one here and in my DF.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
R:
Raidho: Travel, Rhythm
A:
Ansuz: Wisdom, Communication, Power of words. Odin's rune.
Y:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
Fun challenge. I made a standard rune (and a variant on it) to start. Came out with quite an unusual look, I like it though. I couldn't manage to make one which looks like an animal, but I did manage to make an simple-form running (or leaping?) man, which I think works quite well.
Individual runes and meanings:
Spoiler
J:
Jera: Hopes, Expectations of success, Peace
A:
Ansuz: Wisdom, Communication, Power of words. Odin's rune.
S:
Sowilo: Success, Honor, Health
