Optimization with core only (3.5)

I see all the time talks about optimization here, and I wanted to know how would you optimize with core only. And please don`t just say you choose a tier 1 class.

Pick up good options and avoid the poor ones, just like normal. See for example Saph's Horizon Tripper.

What level of optimization are we talking about here? There's filling your role well, then there's filling everybody's role well, and then there's just flat-out game-stopping stuff. All of those can be done fairly well in core.
