    Default Virtual Tabletops...choices choices...

hey all, i'm basically being forced to switch my campaign to online only, as i am moving two states up and one of my players is being shipped overseas early next year.

I have MapTools but im looking for other alternatives, i mean maptools is good but mostly the things i care about is dice rolling so everyone can make sure no one is cheating, character records so i can make sure no one is cheating, and maybe character picture uploads (along with important npc picture uploads). right now we are using skype for voice chat, msn for text (as one player has no mic and refuses to get one....) and my deviantart as character references. I dont care too much about maps, as what i do now is just make a grid and show where the bad-guys are and let the players move around, but this is a heavy rp game.

anyway, all im asking for is a list of virtual tabletops that are free, because i know my players arent going to pay anything lol

P.S. I really like fantasy grounds but it's uber expensive, if there is something free like that i'd be very happy lol

I don't have any experience with them but here are the tools that I have found:
    OpenRPG
    Gametable
Neither of these programs is currently updated.
2009 was the last time someone released something, but they still might be good.

Also, the people who make Maptools make something called DiceTool.

You don't really need dicetool to roll dice in maptool, it can all be done with macros in the chatbox, so cheating is never an issue. You can also upload character pictures to the library, and make your own tokens with tokentool. Maptool can't really do detailed character records as far as I know (though I've never bothered to check so someone may correct me), but it can be used to track hp, initiative, statuses and defences very easily.

..I don't work for them, honest.

Look here for a comprehensive list of virtual tabletop programs. A great many of them are free. And some of the commercial ones allow the GM to foot the bill for their players, if they know the players would never do so themselves.

I think Gametable might be a good fit for your minimal needs.

MapForge is easy-to-use battlemap creation software for Windows and Mac OS X.
