Default So, a question for y'all about a potential homebrew... (3.x)

How do you think an Antimagic base class would go over? I mean, it's something that's missing, right?

For mechanics, I was thinking about making it have a number of spell levels that it could say "No" to each day- probably twice the level in it...

    Any ideas?

It sounds more like you're talking about a dedicated counterspeller rather than, say, a class that isn't affected by magic. In that case, I think that a Sorcerer with Dispel Magic (along with a number of other options) would work just as well. Heck, I'm pretty sure there are improved counterspell feats that you could take specifically for using this strategy.

Honestly, the first thing that came to mind for me for an anti-caster class would be a barbarian overlay, sacrificing some other abilities to give him a SR=10+barbarian level while raging.
I think I just had an evilgasm!

A focused antimagic class would suffer from the problem spellthieves have, but moreso: what do you do if you are facing nonmagical opponents?

Well, I was thinking of something with, you know, a focus on it. Like the Dread Necromancer for necromancy, the Beguiler for illusion, and the Warmage for evocation. With class features, other than spells.

    A defensively built class, actually.

    You bash their face in?

Also, am I right in thinking you're looking for Occult Slayer in base class form?

I would check out the different feats designed for mage killing along with the different anti-spellcaster ACFs that many classes have. Favored Enemy (Spellcasters), Spell Sense (+AC vs. spells), and the like.

The class could be viable in a high-magic world, although it would be good if they had their own type of magic to use too. Perhaps a focus on Conjuration spells? I don't know. Sounds a lot like the spellthief already.

Close, but not so much of a focus on the "can't touch this", as the "NO!". And I know that.

so, more like the Witchborn binder (MoI 162-168) in base class form? Without the whole "sponsored by the king" bit, I'd assume. I've got one mostly worked out... I just haven't posted it yet.

Yeah... Now I'm working on a Abjuration specialist similar to the three mentioned, as opposed to my already planned "No" class.

Well, I've just started work on it, and I probably won't be able to get online until, oh, Saturday, so... Yeah, Monday sounds about right. Shall we ask for people opinions on them both, to see what the Playground prefers?

The problem isn't that your idea is too broad - it's that it is too narrow. Saying "I counter" is like saying "I charge". Sure, you can build a character around the idea, but you don't need to make a specific class for the strategy. Why make a new "Charger" class when a Barbarian/Fighter with select feats will do exactly what you want it to do?

If you want a quick-and-dirty class, you might try modifying a Spellthief. Just change their spell-acquiring ability to allow them to "counter" a spell being cast, rather than sneak attack to acquire their spells. It seems like the simpliest option, although perhaps not the strongest.

Sounds good to me. We'll have to put them up in the Homebrew forum, of course, but we can link back here to see which is preferred. Or we could post them both in the same thread, but it could be harder to identify individual feedback that way.

    Only as a counterspeller.
Sudden Shield also allows you to block a charge (Solid Fog), block a series of spells (Globe of Invulnerability) or give yourself a bonus to AC right before you're attacked ([Greater] Mage Armor).

Personally, I'm kinda disappointed by Mageborn Hunter because only 7 of the class abilities have an explanation. That's half of them. The other half just say "look on this page". I understand that you can't really take stuff from books and just post it online, but it makes it hard to see what the abilities do if you don't have access to the book.

So, my vote goes to Deflector Mage.

I can understand that. I may look at the abilities again (I'm AFB at the moment, as well) and see if I can put up a general overview of what each does without violating any rules. I'll see what I can remember now.

Edit: Done. Very brief descriptions listed in parenthesis after each page number. If any Mods or anyone else thinks that info is too much, I'll take it down, but I think it should be fine.

Also, I do like the Deflector/Barrier Mage (whichever it is really named), but I like mine too. I'll leave it to the rest of you to decide the "best".
