What sort of strategies are there for dealing with betrayal within a party?

the smaller side of the conflict has to reroll, sucks to be them. They either get killed by other PC's or get NPC'd, you don't have time to run 2 campaigns at the same time.

fyi: the betrayed survived. Challenge: the betrayed is lawful good, and thus less likely to back-stab in return.

The situation has so many possibilities it's almost impossible to talk about realistic followups without at least a broad understanding of the circumstances.

Basically, the Who, what, where, why, and how of the situation.

The game is run in 2nd edn.
A is a spellcaster/rogue, a career powerbroker, the de facto leader of the party. B is a ranger with the justifier subkit, with a strong weapons focus (bow and blade, particularly). As it happened, the party was attacked by a swarm of shadows, and B failed the save roll. A stands back and says, "let's see what happens." B is saved by other party members, and the party withdraws.

Ah, so the first person (who also happens to be the accepted party leader) left the second in a situation which could of easily lead to the second's death? Unfortunate. Well, as has been pointed out before, being Lawful Good doesn't make you a pushover nor stupid. There's no reason they can't confront the group leader about what happened, especially if they took the time to garner support from the rest of the party (who didn't seem to agree with A's decision in the first place).

But again, the most sensible way for the character to react is to either kick the offending character out of the party, or leave the party himself. Either way, the smaller side has to roll new characters.

I have found the best option (this will vary depending on group) is, if you survive the initial betrayal and can find a way to gain the upper hand, to just kill the betrayer right then and there. No matter the alignment, you can use self defense and heat of passion as justifications. And if the other player complains, tough, don't start PvP if you aint willing to die.
Been there, fought that, died horribly.

Depending on the circumstances/culture, dueling hte offender might also be in order.
