Gods, Tarquin is impressive. I wonder where Elan's off to now?

Probably paralyzed by doubt about what is the best decision on how to do the most good 'long-term,' something he's never thought about before.

Talk about deconstructing the whole concept of good versus evil stories...

I particularly liked the way Tarquin just sips his wine at the end of it.

Awesome in so many ways. Star Wars and Avatar jokes, an excellent deconstruction of hero myths, and complete nonchalance at the end. Tarquin is fantastic.

That is the terrifyingly unfortunate part of reality, for me. Justice doesn't happen because someone gets a come-uppance right at the end, if they even get that.

The reference to getting a burn on Elan's face at the very least. Zuko received his prominent face scar by challenging his father's opinions at a young age.

(Note we're talking Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, not James Cameron's Avatar.)

Congratulations, you can link to TV Tropes. This does not mean you have special insight into the storytelling process, much less the author's mind. Stories don't need to fit into neat boxes, you know.

The thing about the burn across the side of his face? Zuko vs Firelord Ozai?

EDIT: Alternatively, you could just read the post above mine and ignore this one....

Doesn't his desire to be deafeated sort of jive with his desire to spend more time with his son?

Anyway, wonder how he's going to lose that convinces him that he lost. If that.

Someone might have to rebuke my nerd license, but what is elan referencing in that shot where he is brooding and saying "I can't yet I must"? I am sure I have seen something similar but I don't remember....

Also I really liked Tarquin's view of the whole evil vs. good paradigm, the worst (or best) is that he is completely right, there can't be heroes if there is no villains; so if you defeat an evil overlord, you are only paving the road for the next one.

And tarquin's non-Chalan attitude as his son runs away from him in terror? Just Brilliant.

Tarquin is now the most interesting and best character of the entire strip.

Can we leave Elan behind and have Tarquin take his place?

I find it ominous that we see the comic pans back to show the dragon sitting on her throne as Elan runs away.

Somehow, I ge the feeling Tarquin is manipulating the Order to kill her, but in such a manner as they will have no choice but to do so.

Huh. I thought the burn on the side of the face bit was another Star Wars reference - this time referring to Mark Hamil's accident right before they finished shooting the first movie.

I don't know if he got burned in the car accident but I do know that the did mess his face up.

    Edit:

Tarquin is wrong, of course. The villain doesn't exist for the hero - the hero exists to defeat the villain.
