Default A Dream of Quiet (OoC)

A Dream of Quiet on the Final Front

    Introduction:
    Spoiler
    Show
You remember yourself, Earth, the modern world. But you woke up one day in another world, as another person. Feel free to change any details you may like, but try to stick to HG's idea of someone very much like yourself, and how they would act thrust into another world.

At the end of the same day, you went to sleep. Your dreams were lucid and oddly detailed. Each of you came to a symbolic gateway reflecting your life, and passed through. A new dream began with your next sleep cycle, as they do, of a stranger's life in a fantastic world.
When you felt yourself wake, the dream did not fade away, but grew clearer and more real. With all the detail and presence of reality, you find yourself in the life you dreamed of.
Now you also remember a whole other life, right up until the moment not too long ago of your Exaltation. Is this real, or false perception, and in which direction? Is this a fantastic dream, where you can be the hero you always dreamed of? A horrific nightmare, lost in a world you only know through someone else's eyes? Or have you finally woken up?

Outside your head, things were already bad enough. With the release of the Solar Shards, mass chaos began to take hold. Well remembered is the siege of Thorns by the armies of the restless dead, and they are on the march again. In the secret temples of Yozi cults throughout Creation, the beginning steps of the Raclamation are underway. Rumors of strange mechanical beings have filtered out from the northwest, along with fantastic tales of a whole other world of tunneled metal. Around the Threshold satraps are trying to break free from the Realm, and imperial soldiers have been dispatched to restore order. In the Imperial Palace, the throne of the Scarlet Empress still stands empty. Heaven has been thrown into shock to see their plan to contain the Solars undone. As smaller groups take advantage of the mounting violence and chaos to pursue their own lesser agendas, madness reigns.

    Business as usual in Creation.

There is one paradoxical island of serenity. In Gem, the city of a thousand explosions, there is peace. The Despot rules with a light hand, no external or internal forces threaten the productive mines of the area, and life is as good as it gets, these days.
By coincidence or design, you have gathered here. As other lands come closer to full on war, you can't help but wonder what is keeping order here.

    -----------

Now, would you please re-post your character sheets here for ease of reference, that would be helpful, as would a bit of information on what your character intended to do here.

I intend to give you some time to get to know other characters and start any plans of your own before getting my plots running, so as to settle the IC group dynamic, let me get my details in order, and to give you all a chance to act.

    Character Sheet, Perfected Crystal Orchid
    Spoiler
    Show
Name: Perfected Crystal Orchid (Doctorate of Hierarchy)
    Caste: Defiler (Malfeas Favored)
Anima: As his anima reaches its apex, it is crushed into order and resolves into the pure white brilliance of the fires within She Who Lives in Her Name, crystal spheres within containing the glyphs of the Hierarchy's name - though none can comprehend it save by her power, so they remain painfully impossible to understand.

Motivation: To restore the Primordial rulers of Creation.
Szorenian Urge: To make the Realm know its failures.
    Backstory
    Spoiler
    Show

Harmonious Sapphire Orchid, named by parents who made up for their trust in astrological naming with boundless love for him, grew up in Nexus for many years. Sheltered by both the wealth of his family, and their close ties into the Guild, he was not only a good Nexus citizen but shaping up to be an excellent heir to the family fortunes and an excellent student of academics and organization in his own right, worthy to succeed his parents. He followed the Immaculate Faith, as much of his family did, but only to the minimum of public decorum, though that still made their family religious within the Guild. His closest experience with power not stemming from holding the reins on wealth, organization, and knowledge were to see a Wyld Hunt pass through the city in pursuit of a demon-Anathema.
Over the course of a mere day, however, that changed, for he overheard two servants discussing a plan they had both been paid off for. Though they were too slow of thought to realize what had happened, a chill passed through Orchid’s soul, for he realized that they were describing an assassination attempt – against his father and mother. In the hopelessness of realization, he somehow managed to not fall to the floor as realization after realization crashed through his mind. If they both died while he was not yet old enough, the family fortunes would be torn apart by the rest of the Guild… He wouldn’t even be killed, for so long as he lived no other family member could step in, and so the other families and groups would simply appoint a string of retainers. Then, when all he knew was broken or stolen, hew would simply be allowed to live or die depending on how much of an annoyance he was. How could it be otherwise? His father had always taught him of the inevitable crashing of the Guild’s politics – hidden, perhaps, but always so simple… This very situation, he had studied, though he never thought of it as a potential truth.
There was a moment of decision, for all of this came in a flash and stripped away all his choices save the extremes; he could fall into hopelessness, or he could do something, risking his own life and far more against the Guild itself. He wavered, the sun setting, and as the first darkness arrived, still moonless for now, he began trying to execute a plan to save his parents – sending out messages, hoping against hope that they would receive his letters before the assassins discovered his attempted subterfuge, and starting to prepare a few rooms so that when the assassins came, if his parents returned, they would find a family prepared.
    The assassins never arrived.
    Neither did his parents.
He was finally left, lying on the floor, feeling dead and wishing that it were true. His parents, he was sure, were simply killed right outside the house; of course the assassins would wait at the one location his parents would return to. Or maybe they were killed elsewhere. He could just as easily have been wrong – he hadn’t gotten anything else right, in the end, except that a servant had announced that he had terrible news, so he was near-certain his parents had died. Certainly nothing less would have extracted that tone. The only thing to do was wait for the agents of whatever family arranged this to arrive and start dismantling all he knew. Perhaps he could try and kill them, at least, take vengeance with the old sword he had taken in a vain hope of opposing the killers.
He couldn’t do either, and simply lay on the floor insensate, not noticing as near-imperceptible fog filtered through the room. He barely listened, and did not respond, when whisperings began, overlaid slightly with inhuman clicks together with a strange but pleasant voice. It promised revenge on the assassins, if desired, the power to fix such an error that occurred throughout all Creation and would leave him acclaimed forever as its Prince – and finally, striking pride, desire, and a need to repair himself all at once, a destiny he could take up that went beyond lying on the floor until everything was unwoven. A chance, in fact, to weave things back together as they were meant to be, to fulfill his desires by reweaving a world more to his liking. Continuing this process for well over an hour, filling the currently empty mortal with a faint flame of hope and desire, it continued, until…
Accompanied by the sudden clacks of silhouetted now-material legs upon the floor, a green-carapaced, insectoid, three-fingered hand reached out as a stronger voice presented the offer: Get up and make a destiny restoring the rightful rulers of the world, and the order that was meant to be upon the chaotic evils of Creation-as-it-is. The ember within had been blown on, and the offer ignited it in full. Pushing himself up, Orchid said simply, “Yes,” and took the demon’s hand. His eyes widened as the demon’s grip turned tight – and began to shake. Over the course of perhaps four seconds, the vibration went from nothing, to shaking away the fog, to causing the demon to unravel, exploding around him and wrapping him in darkness.
(It took nearly a day before a servant simply came in and beheld the cause of the mist spiraling out under the door – in the center of the fog, faintly glinting, was a man-sized chrysalis – and carefully removing the floor around it, a dragon-blooded exalt – who turn on him with eyes shining with madness, and killed him. By the time anyone else came, the only thing left was a murdered servant and signs of a kidnapping.)
Within the Chrysalis, something… strange happened. At first it was mere darkness. Then came nightmares of loss, frustration with a battle lost against all odds… finally, the beautiful, incomprehensible Creation-idea that lay beneath the world. Yet, as that last faded into the darkness as well, and the incredible brilliance began to rise inside him, building and beginning to explode, he felt…
A sudden electric ripple as he passed through the gate. He had been having a strange dream; lucid, yet irresistible. Not because the dream was controlling him but because it offered what he could not refuse at his own behest, curiosity and desire leading him on through his own visions. As the visions built up stronger, they also fell away and wove together until after what seemed like days – or minutes? – he came upon a Gate, clearly a capital-G gate as his narrative side said. It was built of many things, but harmonious, each having meaning to him as a whole rather than mere randomness. A lock of his sister’s hair, another of his own, pages of books, a few authors even readable, scenes from favorite games woven all together into something that ought to be tangible and yet still was not. Less obvious things became apparent each time he looked again – a particular leaf, a mere pattern of light, a feeling hanging there in space, affecting him each time he looked upon it.
But through the Gate he could see nothing at all save a flat green radiance-made-surface. Perhaps it was liquid, or solid, or even the surface of light it appeared to be for it neither rippled nor gave any indication that in this dream-world it was other than a flat plan of pure, conceptual Green, neither light nor pigment but merely color. Feeling that if it turned out to be solid and he bashed into it, at least no other would see the dream, he stepped into it… And through, in an instant seeing the dream of chessboards, floating geometry, imagery and prose, relieved memories and regrets, simple beauty, flowers, the Gate changed and took on aspects alien for a moment and then rapidly familiar as the shock of waking into another body and life sent him reeling.
The shock did not stop, but continued – as he finally began to integrate his now-dual self, weaving together into a whole, taking the self-control of Creation, the willpower of Earth – along with some interesting ideas about science – and so many other aspects ascending, descending, matching, he was nearly done when the brilliance he was riding like a storm was too much, and exploded in a rage of lightning and nuclear glow, cracking his shell open into two perfect, symmetrical halves as he burst out gasping for air. Even as he felt yet another presence – thankfully the Tomescu who was with him, not another part of him exactly, introducing itself, he looked up at Nexus through the cave mouth. He had work to do, before he was taken to meet what remained of the rulers of the world.

    Personality
    Spoiler
    Show
Perfected Crystal Orchid, as he now calls himself – or occasionally, simply ‘Doctor’, when he doesn’t feel the need to use a ‘real’ name – is generally rather pleasant in his way, but tends to have a distant look towards people. Those few who can prove themselves to have some knowledge about creating, forging, thaumaturgy, or any academic trade tend to see a different side of him, grinning easily and somewhat disturbing in the way of his enthusiasm, even as it becomes difficult to resist or oppose his unsettling magnetism. This is very much the same as the persona he wears whenever he has run out of patience with the local crime and sets out to put his well-forged armor and weapons to their proper use – not killing anyone, perhaps, but there have been less criminals since they discovered that the neighborhood has a protector far more willing to wound than the guard. Though he can be very serious, he tends to clearly enjoy his work, whether it involves the contentment of forging the best swords around or the visceral release of killing someone he knows to be a blight on society – and sending them to the guard, in case they feel like reforming, of course. He’s not heartless – as his few favored customers know, anything but, in his own way.

    Appearance
    Spoiler
    Show
Orchid has golden-blond hair, shaved close as a nod to the heat of his forge. He is fairly tall but otherwise somewhat mundane, and generally he wears workmanlike clothes including a light coat appropriate to the heat outside, or a blacksmith’s apron when working at his forge.

When he doesn’t want to be recognized, however, he discards that Loom-Snarling Deception and prefers to sate his preference for the dramatic aesthetic with a gleaming white trench-coat and fedora with sunglasses, along with a pitch-black silk shirt beneath and similarly colored pants of a tougher material. His shadow also reveals the change that his time in the Chrysalis Grotesque wrought on him, besides merely changing his hair color to the golden-blond long braid that reaches down his back - his shadow is sharp and angular, as if he had an exoskeleton rather than smooth skin, and trails fading afterimages like the mist trail of a tomescu rather than simply moving with him. His appearance otherwise changes little, though it resolves from illusion-crafted mundanity into its natural, slightly alien grandeur - he is no more handsome than normal, but possesses an air of the other than attracts rather than repels with literally inhuman grace.

    Sorcery Trials
    Spoiler
    Show
    In chronological order:
    Journey and Humility
    Spoiler
    Show
Knowing fully well the trials required for Sorcery, one of Szoreny’s second-circle souls directed Orchid to an elder Defiler, Doctor Doom-of-Nations (Many Defilers call themselves doctors. About half of those actually bothered to earn one in a Malfean university. Orchid did, and isn’t at all bitter about the ones who couldn’t be bothered to earn their title, not at all.) The elder Green Sun Prince told him the trials, and said that he ought to go out to Creation and live a while. Some time in Gem or some other city would do him good and get him through his Journey and his Humility if he kept an open mind about it. The fact that he had already been assigned to Gem was convenient, and Orchid can't help but wonder if hearing about that was what 'inspired' the elder Doctor to suggest the city.

    Tutelage
    Spoiler
    Show
The same elder Defiler, Doom-of-Nations promised (if in a slightly absentminded fashion) to direct Orchid to a sorcery school when he returned for Tutelage. Orchid is somewhat ambivalent on the subject; he can find a tutor on his own in Malfeas with ease after all so it doesn’t matter if the elder Defiler forgets, at least.

    Fear
    Spoiler
    Show
The schools of Malfeas are adept at teaching Fear – most often by sending out a demon with no means of making noise somewhere where Adorjan might come through, and using magic to mimic the silent winds - although unfortunately, Orchid is aware of this and the effect might be ruined by it. Of course, a few die when Adorjan really does come.

    Sacrifice
    Spoiler
    Show
Even from their own servants, the Yozis demand Sacrifice; there is probably no other way to gain the necessary understanding. Nevertheless, there is no discernable pattern even living amongst the Yozis; whatever they take, it is dear. Anything else is mysterious.

    Weird Distance Stuff
    Spoiler
    Show
The energies of the demense, however, express themselves more in the twisting of distance: going from Gem to the demense is a walk of exactly 1,600 yards from some of the deeper lava tubes through the caves around Gem, while moving from the demense back to Gem places it as actually only 16 yards below the surface of any point on the surface exactly halfway between the edge of the city and the center, the person exiting finding themselves to appear suddenly in the closest unobserved place in a public street within 160 yards of the place they intended to exit at (or a random possible place if they had no place in mind. If no unobserved place is available, then they turn up as close as possible, but no more than 160 yards from a potential destination.) In terms of detecting the essence of the demense, however, it is a distant 16,000 yards (about nine miles) ‘below’ Gem, with each step down below gem counting as ten in regards to drawing closer to the demense.

    Harvested Token
    Spoiler
    Show
The harvested token for the demense is the solidity of the white flame in its center; by stepping upon some of the glowing squares beneath the flame in the proper order, it can be coaxed down, and once a month it has waxed solid enough that this property can be held by a mundane flame, which will no longer consume its fuel or set fire to other objects, though touching it to another flame will transfer the solidity and put out the first flame. If no flame is available then the harvester suffers a single unsoakable bashing health level of damage, and will cause the solidity to manifest in the first flame they touch.)

Resources ●●● (Orchid works as a smith – entirely leveraging his crafting skills, not his business acumen- as he looks into producing a firewand design that will get him a place in House Arbani’s good graces – and a slice of its influence. He could make one easily, of course, but he doesn’t want to upset the city’s balance of power by giving Arbani too good of a design, either, so he bides his time and discerns the power structures of Gem.)
Demonic Familiar ● (Consumes-the-Azure-Sky, Metody, serves Orchid out of loyalty to Malfeas and an odd taste for the air of Creation – hence the name. The vitriol elemental is of course also interested in becoming attached to a rising Green Sun Prince early, especially a Defiler.)

    Spoiler

To Orchid, of course, he knows well that his skills are better spent aiding him in his interactions with the demon realm, and the Tomescu is grateful for his binding into a Green Sun Prince as it has preserved him from his fated death. He was previously a musician, and is capable of advising Orchid on the use of stringed instruments – the fiddle and violin especially – but knows that his skills are better used aiding his bonded Exalted with awareness and understanding the demonic realms.)

While originally, Gifts wished for nothing more than to construct magnificent weapons to protect those he loved - often at the cost of everything else nearby, just in case - his death at the hands of Sidereals due to the failure of one of his destructive bombs would drive him to construct a new device capable and getting it to Heaven for detonation. It would do that, if the weakness of his memories didn't mean that the pressure of the other minds in Orchid's head keeps his memories safely crushed; in theory, Orchid could look over them, but he is already aware of the few details he needs, and the memories themselves are the pathetic ravings of an over-prideful and over-paranoid mad artificer.

Orchid is here to make use of Gem against the Realm - it's one of the few places that is more-or-less unthreatened by Realm control, making it an excellent spot. Normally, he would worm his way into House Arbani with his Exalted/Earth engineering skills for new firewands; but given that Gem is peaceful, and even uniquely peaceful, he's not inclined to disrupt it which is slowing those plans down.
He also makes sure that any of the thugs in his neighborhood don't bother him (and occasionally, protects someone else. Compassion can only be twisted so far...)

Born to a middle-ranked guild merchant, Wing spent his early years traveling around in his father's guild caravan. As lives in this fallen age go, it wasn't bad. Not really wanting for much, and plenty of stimulation for a developing mind. Travel, new people and places. Wing picked up a lot over the years, and as his childhood ended his family had high hopes for him taking over the business and rising within the guild. Wing wasn't as interested in rising within the guild, but doing what his father did, the constant battle of wits as one bargained, that did.

But the Guild would not be where it is today if it was only comprised of traders, and their less legitimate enterprises breed strong resentments. And as big a fish as the guild normally is, there are bigger one's. There aren't any firm details, as that would cause too many problems. But the Guild overstepped their bounds in a Realm Saltrapy, and while the Great House that really controlled the saltrapy could care less about it's people's missfortunes, they did care about someone muscling in on their turf. So an example was made, and Wing's family's luck was poor. Along with several other Guild Caravans, they were struck by Bandits. Horrible, horrible bandits, somehow having gained Realm military supplies, and even a couple dragon-blooded.

Wing's memories of the attack are fragmented; Father talking with a fellow Guildsman, only to fall, blood spraying as he's nearly decapitated by an arrow. The guards dying quickly, or turning on the caravan. Fires burning guildsmen, or vines crushing them. Sister pinned to the wagon's door with a pike, while mother is dragged down. He can't win, fleeing into the night, putting as many dunes as he can between himself and the nightmare that was his life. Shouts in the distance as pursuers close. A pain, and he stumbles, the arrow in his shoulder knocking him off balance. More shouts, then screams. One foot in front of the other. Can't stop. New figures. Pale. White, except for the blood. Parts from the Realm soldiers as well. Dune People. But a light. A hooded figure. Whispered warnings. The rest is blackness.

Though the dune people kill and eat all humans they find as a rule, they retain a special respect for their liberators the Lunars, and their deity, Luna. This alone saved Onyx Wing. The Silver Pack found him not much later, Tattooing him as soon as possible, and giving him to Tamuz to mentor.

Wing spent the next 4 years helping Tamuz with his Thousand Streams project, but now he has decided he is ready to strike out alone. He decided to head to Gem, as unlike other area's it has great natural resources, but little in the way of defense, and would make a natural target for the Realm. Yet no move has been made. This interests the Lunar, perhaps this idea could be expanded to the entire South.

Ever had one of those crazy dreams? The one's where you know you're in a dream, yet it seems so real that you just can't convince yourself of that? It was like that. I 'woke' up in the dream, opened my bedroom door, but it didn't lead to the rest of the house. It was some green vortex. Didn't really do much, but eventually curiosity got the better of me, and a poked it with a few thing. They came back okay, so then I poked my hand in. Big mistake. Something was waiting for me, and pulled me through. Came out into a room with...well, it was me, but not me, if that makes sense. Like in those shows where someone goes to an alternate dimension, and finds yourself, but you've had a different life. This guy, he was scary. Had these silver tattoos, and the sense of a predator about him. We just kinda stared at each other for a bit. Talked a bit about who we were, and why we were here. Weird thing(well, weirder thing) was that we understood each other, though he wasn't speaking English. Continued like that for a couple minutes, then everything changed, and I was looking at myself. From the other guys body. From his reaction, same thing happened to him, but before we could do anything we the vortexes came back, and took us away. I'm now in 'Creation', and I guess he's on Earth. Only thing that's saved me so far is that I remember everything he does, though I could really do without some of those memories. Well, he was heading to Gem, so I thought I'd do the same, at least until I have some idea of what I can do.

I hope I can get home, better yet, I hope I can get Wing back into his life, and me into mine. Until then, though, I just hope to survive.

Wing was a very serious and driven Lunar. Some might say he lost something with his family, but if they did, they would recant now. Now his seriousness is tempered with a dash of humor, oft irreverent, sometimes convoluted.

Also, he's become more compassionate as of late, eschewing his immediate desire to end all realm influence, and taking a more gradual approach. Perhaps he's finally come to terms with the deaths, and is listening to the wisdom the elder's know is in that head somewhere.

There is an odd sort of tension, now. Plus a certain distracted quality. Almost waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Just short of average height, Wing has the normal swarthy coloration of a Delzahn nomad, but his build speaks of someone farther to the east. He certainly looks like some sort of wanderer, or perhaps a beggar, with dirty cloths and several days growth of facial hair, though there's a hint of a trimmed goatee somewhere in there. Considering his position, though, he's decided to play up the similarities to the Delzahn, taking on the loose, flowing robes of the desert dwellers, given to him by Tamuz while Wing learned from him. The robes also have the advantage of hiding his tattoo's and artifact.

This Lunar Aspected Manse is located to the north of Gem. The name is somewhat misleading, as in actuality, it's several grotto's spread around the base of a dormant volcano. Each grotto is dedicated to a different aspect of Luna. Though each grotto has slightly different styling's, as benefiting their nature as a temple to an individual aspect, one common feature in all of them is the Alter. A statue of the aspect of Luna the temple is devoted to stands before a pedestal supporting a bowl of what appears to be water. The water always shows a reflection of the type of moon associated with that particular aspect. Sacrifices can be placed in the bowl, and will seem to fall into the reflection of the moon.

Each grotto can serve as the manse's hearthroom, but only one such grotto is 'active' at a time. The manse changes the chosen grotto at random(or, if there is a method, it's unknown), though an attuned person both knows where the hearthroom is and can command the manse to make a certain grotto the hearthroom. If it lacks such an order, any grotto can be activated by having a short prayer to Luna at the chosen grotto, sacrificing either a Resource 3 item or a Lethal Health Level. It will not change while being attuned to, and the hearthstone forms in the current hearthroom's bowl.

This specific service receives no notice from Luna.(1 dot)
Habitability-Open to the desert air, this manse was designed with Lunar toughness in mind. While Luna's Chosen find it comfortable enough, those wussy babies that make up the other exalted find it difficult at best to live there for any length of time.(2 dots)

Artifact-●●-Hearthstone Bracers(Orb of the Unnoticed Predator)-
Mentor-●-Having Exalted close to Chiaroscuro, Tamuz was a natural choice as a mentor. Truth be told, the training Onyx Wing received was top notch, but afterwords, with a gift of the bracers and the location of a manse, he was pretty much left to his own devices. Tamuz would be willing to give suggestions, maybe even part with a bit of information, but beyond that Wing's successes and failures are his own.
Contact-●-He might not be part of the Guild, but he met many while traveling with his father, and some of these people might even share a bit of sympathy for his current straights(what little they know about them, at least). Probably not enough to give him substantial aid, but enough to slip him some information now and then. Though 'Uncle' Geomph Pha, the main guild factor in Gem would probably be willing to do more, Wing doesn't want to demand to much. The man is close to retiring, and Wing would rather not involve him or his family in Exalted power struggles.

    Name: Cathak Pyrus
    Aspect: Fire
    Anima: Twisting pillar of fire

    Motivation: To return home

    Backstory
Pyrus was a bold and fearless martial arts prodigy, with a bright future in the House. His tendency towards fathering bastards among the House's mortal servants notwithstanding, his House paying the girls off and discreetly sending any whelp that Exalts off to House holdings in the Threshold. He showed promise in many areas of Dynast life, but as is typical for young men he only really cares about excelling in combat.

He was born in the Imperial City itself, within sight of the palace. His skin held a reddish tint from birth, just like his parents. He took to his schooling like a natural, the blood of the dragons gifting him with great natural talent. When he was ten, on the very journey to the Cloister of Wisdom, he was chosen by the Fire Dragon. He learned all they could teach, but instead of going on to learn Fire Dragon style and be a true Immaculate Monk, he was whisked away home and taught by an old Cathak monk who had created his own style, a powerful variant of Five-Dragon style that, according to him, blended the powers of the dragons instead of borrowed from them, leading to much greater power. Pyrus was able to master the style enough to strike out on his own, his sifu telling him to go and experience the wide world. Pyrus was sixty when he left the Isle, though he looked barely twenty.

When he left, his father gave him his arms and armor, and told him why he'd had him secretly trained. Pyrus was to be the first of many Cathak scions trained in Concordant Dragon, to prepare them for their life in the Imperial army. The style was their attempt at a solution to so many Cathaks getting killed, it was their secret weapon. The charms were designed to be indistinguishable from Five-Dragon to an observer, but he was to be cautious, a Five-Dragon master would be able to tell the difference, if he met one he was to avoid using his power, or kill them.

    Personality
Utterly confidant, almost arrogant. Pyrus has never met a challenge he could not overcome. And his excellent breeding has only reinforced this, giving him more power to call on that other Dragonbloods his age. Something he never hesitates to point out to them.

    Spoiler
    Show
    Concordant-Dragon Claw
Cost: 1m; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 1
    Type: Supplemental
    Keywords: Combo-OK, Leader
    Duration: Instant
    Prerequisite Charms: None
Giving her fingers the aspect of the Five Elemental Dragons’ claws, whose perfected natures slice through the thickest of godhides, the Exalt's attacks cuts flesh to ribbons without concern for the armor before it. Attacks made with this Charm inflict lethal damage and ignore a target’s Hardness and adds the Exalt's Essence to post-soak damage rolls.

    Concordant-Dragon Force-Blow
Cost: 2m; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 2
    Type: Simple
    Keywords: Combo-OK, Leader
    Duration: Instant
    Prerequisite Charms: Concordant-Dragon Claw
With a brief invocation to the might of the Five Dragons, the Exalted martial artist lays out his foe with a single attack. This attack doubles the normal base damage from an attack (which does not include extra successes) before subtracting soak. Also, if the attack generates more raw damage than the target’s (Stamina + Resistance), the target must make a Stamina+Resistance roll vs the attacker's Essence or lose conciousness.

    Concordant-Dragon Fortitude
    Cost: 1m per 4B or 2L; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 2
    Type: Reflexive (Step 7)
    Keywords: Combo-OK, Leader
    Duration: Instant
    Prerequisite Charms: None
The impervious hides of the Elemental Dragons lend the practitioner of Concordant-Dragon Style a small portion of their strength. Invoking this Charm in response to a specific attack, the Exalt increases her soak by four bashing or two lethal for each mote spent.

    Concordant-Dragon Blocking Technique
Cost: 4m; Mins: Martial Arts 3, Essence 2
Type: Simple (Speed 5, -0 DV)
    Keywords: Combo-Basic, Leader
    Duration: One scene
    Prerequisite Charms: Concordant-Dragon Fortitude
Letting the Dragons guide him, the Exalt aids his defense with Essence. For the rest of the scene, he adds his permanent Essence to his PDV. If unarmed, he can also parry lethal attacks without a stunt or other magic.

    Concordant-Dragon Form
Cost: 5m; Mins: Martial Arts 4, Essence 2
    Type: Simple (Speed 5)
    Keywords: Form-type, Leader
    Duration: One scene
Prerequisite Charms: Concordant-Dragon-Force Blow, Concordant-Dragon Blocking Technique
Performing a quick series of motions that offer thanks and claim guidance from the earth, sky and sea, with the martial artist herself representing fire and life, the Exalt takes aspects of all five elements into her technique. Her unarmed Martial Arts attacks inflict lethal damage instead of bashing, and she soaks aggrevated damage with her full lethal soak. If she’s wielding one of the form’s weapons, she treats it as though it has +2 Accuracy. Also, she adds double her Essence to her Dexterity or Strength for determining running speed, jumping distance and feats of strength.

    Concordant-Dragon Fist
Cost: 6m; Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 4
    Type: Simple
    Keywords: Obvious, Leader
    Duration: Instant
    Prerequisite Charms: Conordant-Dragon Form
Calling upon the Elemental Dragons of Earth and Fire, the Concordant-Dragon Stylist endows a single attack with streaking bands of white and red Essence that tear through his opponent’s very soul. The martial artist makes a single attack that inflicts aggravated damage.

    Concordant-Dragon Invulnerability
    Cost: 5m, 1wp; Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 4
    Type: Reflexive (Step 7)
    Keywords: Combo-OK, Leader
    Duration: Instant
    Prerequisite Charms: Concordant-Dragon Form
Dragons are above the petty blows and mosquito-stings of their mortal enemies. Activating this Charm allows the Exalt to perfectly defend against a single attack. This Charm suffers from one of the four flaws of invulnerability.

    Concordant-Dragon Wrath
Cost: 1m per attack + 1hl; Mins: Martial Arts 5, Essence 4; Type: Extra Action
    Keywords: Combo-OK, Obvious, Leader
    Duration: Instant
Prerequisite Charms: Concordant-Dragon Fist, Concordant-Dragon Invulnerability
Calling upon the endless energies of the Elemental Dragons, the Exalt explodes into a furious assault. This rain of blows is the apex of the Concordant-Dragon Style and is immediately recognizable to any who have seen it in action before. For every mote spent, the Exalt makes one attack at his full attack dice pool. All attacks must be against the same target. He may not spend more motes on this Charm than twice his Essence. Using this Charm inflicts one level of unsoakable bashing damage on the Exalt.

Pyrus is in Gem as part of the usual Dynast practice of exploring the world he's tasked to protect. He chose the far South out of curiosity for the one city that could rival a Great House's wealth, and he loves riding out on the dunes. He knows he's tempting fate with all the raiders in the South, but that only makes it more fun. Besides, he's Exalted, it would take a small army of mortals to offer him serious harm. Plus, the Despot was very welcoming of Exalted who stay in his city. A man who's power is based on mercenaries would never turn away a demigod.

It's a Celestial upgrade to Five-Dragon. Not so much esoterica as many Celestial styles, but very utilitarian and practical. And the awesome form weapons and armor allowance doesn't hurt.

In any case, my character might eventually want to learn that, if you'd teach it. Having armor will only aid my characters ability to survive.

    Character Sheet
    Spoiler
    Show
Name: Raziel Kablah/John Fieldsman (actually an Anglicized version of my last name there, but "John Veltman" doesn't sound as cinematic to me)
    Caste: Infernal Malefactor
Anima: As Raziel's anima banner begins to manifest, he gives off the odd appearence of being caught in the middle of a green-and-silver hurricane, the eye of an infernal maelstorm. Chaotic swirls of water and sand whip about him, a purview of the chaos that shall come with the Reclamation. His anima banner is a humanoid radeken, one of the Kimberian demons known, fittingly, as the Madling Hellstorms, a great dragon-like cat with wings of blood-red ice and skin of silvered water.

Motivation: Stop the inhuman treatment of ghosts by Skullstone and the Silver Prince.

The..."other father", to borrow a term from a favorite movie of mine...gave a friendly chuckle, the crystalline branches running through his hair rustling with a sound like a harp. "Come on, you already know me, at least in this form. You can can call me Dad."

Normally, I'm pretty intelligent and quick on the draw, but sometimes, one isn't sure how to react at all.

"Um, uh, er, hi Dad. Sorry!

"Dad" cocked his head curiously. "'Sorry?' About what?"

    "Well, um, you ha-hate it when I stu-stutter, er, I mean-uh-"

"Hey, it's okay. I don't mind. You just have a slow reaction time, that's all." The other father patted me on the shoulder. "I'm not your biological father. I don't notice these things unless you point them out. Frankly, I'm glad. I'd hate to be the kind of person who tries to pin his problems on other people because he's too much of a coward and a control freak to admit he's wrong on occasion. I'm what he should be, at least in your opinion."

...OK, now things were getting weird. I mean, I'm familiar with dream logic, but self-referencing psychology?

Apparently, my "ideal father" got the expression on my face. He smirked mischievously, which even I could tell was a "I know something that you don't" look. "Heh...I can see you're confused. Well, I think that's normal. Most humans are when they're talking to a being who changes personality based on who's talking to him-sometimes I'm even multiple personalities at once." Whelp, dream logic again. Strangely comforting to know I wasn't examining myself even in my subconscious. "Think of the 'me' you are talking to now as a character in one of your plays-I feel what he feels, but I'm also a separate person beyond that. You think of the role, I play the part. He gave a friendly smile. "I think it's really fun to be someone you're not, isn't it?"

I immediately liked "Not-Dad" a lot better than my real one. I got the feeling this one wouldn't get drunk before a stage production simply because the weekend gave him free time. "You and I both. Personally, I love the roar of the crowd-kinda strange, given how much of a recluse I am."

"Hey, it's not your fault. You just live in the middle of nowhere, with no one but your Mom to talk to."

Oh...right. That. "Can we not go there, please?"

The Not-Dad immediately looked empathetic. "You don't have to. I already know."

I sighed one of my "my life sucks and I have no one to blame but me" sighs. And then I started to rant. "Selfish bastard. Always calling me and Mom out for not not doing our chores for the 'family'-oh really, Dad, you sure you didn't mean to say 'me', you lazy jerk?-and then when I finally get annoyed at that constant 'hey Johnny Boy, look at how funny and cute I am when I'm above the legal limit!' and tell him to shut up, he throws a tantrum about how 'ungrateful' I am, then he goes and starts taking out his inadequacies on Mom, and when she has the gall, the gall to start documenting his abusiveness, he pulls out a brick and...and...

    Damn it. I'm crying again.

Not-Dad sat down on my bed-really, a convertible couch that Mom put a mattress on-and began to hug me in a soft embrace. "It's alright. She's fine. You protected her, after all."

"....I cut him with a kitchen knife...."

"But it was the only way. He could have murdered her if you didn't stop him. And he's fine too-just with a little scar to remind him of what he made you do."

Yeah? Nice try, other father. I'm trying to be better than him, not a lesser version. Still...thanks.

It's a little while before I stop sobbing, and a little while before Not-Dad speaks again. "You know...where I come from, people who act like you do are considered heroes. Paragons, even."

I looked up at him. I was listening.

"That said, there are some very bad people there too. Greedy people, jealous people, people who didn't enjoy the world I lovingly helped craft for them because they thought their own problems could be blamed on me and my family. People like your biological father, in other words.

"But a new age is dawning there, and with that, I can help set things right. Of course, I am going to need a few assistants for me and my brothers and sisters-we're ah, restricted from actually acting directly. It's a fair trade, really-you get a long life and all the fame you want, and all I ask is a few favors."

I wasn't sure, at first. On one hand, it sounded genuine, and really, this was a dream. What could go wrong?

On the other hand, I knew what this kind of deal often left out of the fine print in fiction.

It wasn't much of a detail, but I hesitated.

"Actually, 'assistants' isn't the right word. Green Sun Princes are really more of an adoption..."

    Sold.

"So, where does this secretary job take place..."boss"?

"Just through that gate." Not-Dad-Turned-Real-Employer said, pointing at an arch I hadn't seen before. "And could you call me Szoreny? 'Boss' is just too stuffy for my tastes..."

    "Huh..?

    Where...am I?"

Raziel Kablah floated in a strangely liquid darkness, free of anything other than himself. It felt like he was dreaming...but at the same time, it felt too real to be a dream.

"Inside of me., a powerful female voice boomed."Do you remember?

    Huh?...Wait. You're that demon....

A strange hybrid of woman and scorpion materialized in the darkness. "Think. How did you get here...?

    And Raziel remembered.

He remembered his life in the Coral Archipelago, a lay priest of the Immaculate Philosophy who had lost his faith long ago. It wasn't a horrifying revelation to realize how little emotional importance he gave to his faith-rather, it was actually rather liberating, coming to understand that "good ideas" and "cosmic truth" were two different things. He liked his job, though-just because there wasn't some greater cosmic order didn't mean that the message itself was bad-just not as true as it made itself out to be.

So, he kept his position, really to serve more as a psychologist for the archipelago's many, many disenfranchised. Bit of a feminist, too-though only quietly, since he didn't want to offend the elite. Lie that the Immaculate Order he suspected it was, it was a lie that contained great wisdom, and a rulebook for building safer, happier societies. And so, he would have gone on, an anonymous man among millions, doing his part to make the world a better place within reason...

Were it not for an encounter with a young ghost, a refugee from Skullstone.

Lalorna was a demure young thing, attractive by the shadowland's standards. A little skeletal by most standards, though that may have been because she was, well, undead. She had stowed away a ride on a ship that Raziel had been serving on as chaplain, the Renetta Marie. She quickly regretted hitching onto a Coral ship, but she found a friend in Kablah.

She told him of life on the mysterious archepelagio, of the dead that walked with the living. Lalorna herself was a mere scribe, a librarian, really, who simply wished to move up in life through the promise of ghostly status. Too late, she discovered that the entire state religion was nothing more than a masking for a soulsteel refinery. She was lucky to escape as a self-willed being, much less extant.

She wanted Raziel to tell the world, and he did. He was laughed off the stage, repeatedly. He was, after all, just a priest of the Realm that the pirate isles disliked anyway, why should they take this conspiracy theory any more seriously? But Raziel stuck to his principles, and kept on speaking the word.

Right up until the Abyssals came.

All principles died in the face of annhilation.

And so, Raziel was forced to recant his testimony on pain of death and much worse fates besides, and they took Lalorna back to Island Five to subject her to much the same things. Eventually, they left, leaving behind them a broken man, ashamed of his cowardice and weakness. If only I was stronger, he thought. If only I had the fortitude to fight back. And the tinisana offered.

And so, Raziel Kablah found himself in liquid darkness, subject to a transformation both wonderous and horrible. "I guess...it's time?"

"It's time. Rise and shine, Mr. Ka-huh!?

The liquid darkness rippled, like a splash. Raziel felt a new presence.

    "What the-Who is that!?"

And so, Raziel and his Coadjutor felt a new mind enter their union, as much memory as person. And so, the first thing the new Raziel Kablah felt upon emerging from his chitinous cocoon was confusion.

    "I am...Raziel...No...I am John...No...

    "Who am I?"

After the initial confusion and identity crisis of the fusion of the young Earth-born Fieldsman and the Exalted preacher Raziel, it is sometimes hard to say which of the two identities is in control a lot of the time. True, the gestalt goes by the name Raziel Kablah, but the majority of his persona seems to come from John Fieldsman, such as idealism, quietness, a determination to see the best in people and a need to impress.

In any case, Raziel is perfectly sure of his sanity, particularly after he met his otherworldy masters for the first time-Szoreny apparently told the other Yozis in advance about encountering/tempting John's dream-self before he fused with his Creation counterpart. This was most interesting to She Who Lives In Her Name, who wants to know more about this "other world" and it's apparently immutable physical laws. As of yet, he does not trust Her enough to actually say anything concrete, and besides, he has some disquieting gaps in his memory he neglects to bring up, not to mention his memories of the First Age took a life of their own two months into his training.

He trusts both Kimbery and Cecelyne, his two patron Yozis implicitly, however; the Endless Desert's ruthless meritocracy appeals to him on a political level, while the Demon Sea reminds him of his mother in her happier moods. This plays right into his fatal flaws, co-dependency and the inability to set his own goals: Besides being obsessed with proving himself to his friends, it's nearly impossible for him to set himself to a task without orders or requests; without purpose, he's nothing. Thus, he keeps his objections to the Yozi's schemes to himself, determined to ignore the nagging feeling (and literal nagging by Corona) he's made some very big mistakes.

    Appearance

Raziel does "god-fearing street preacher" really well, and he knows it. Wild hair falls about his head in dirty-grey locks, giving him a look of a man who looks into Hell every other day (mainly because he does). A thin, wiry frame stands tall over most people in the West, surveying the world through blue eyes that have seen far too much, and look like they anticipate more. Strangely, this makes him look attractive rather than frightening-something about his almost-sculpted physique and determined stare make him look like a grizzled warrior of the faith, ready to endure whatever life throws at him.

As a side not, he was in his late forties at the time of his Exaltaion, but Raziel actually seems to be aging backwards-the power of the Second Breath is rejuvenating him to the point where he is as spry and toned as a twenty-year old. His Coadjutor's influence is found in a small, chitinous plate that covers his heart.

A sterling example of what a Solar should have been in the First Age, Corona was rather young for a Solar at the time of the Usurpation, barely past her seventy-second year. A benevolent and kindhearted traveler, she spurned the excesses of the Deliberative in favor of her own independence, a wandering priestess and exorcist. While she is actually on friendly terms with Raziel, she thinks he's so lost in the darkness that he's long forgotten how to go back into the light on his own (such as this whole "Earth" thing. If that isn't a guilt-born delusion, she doesn't know what is). As a result, she works to dismantle his schemes and plots, on the basis that constantly preparing for the end of the world that will never come (Certifiable insanity isn't conducive to the Yozis' plans after all) isn't doing any wonders for his emotional stability.

When she isn't working to foul up Raziel's plots, Corona's interests are finding fragments of her life and discovering what happened to her Lunar Mate, Karesni of the Bladed Winds. The fact that she can't actually remember what Karesni looked like or even what his totem was is a testament to the Ebon Dragon's ability to surgically alter memories to the point where they cause the most pain.

    Mentor (Kagami) ●●●

(Just as promised, Szoreny is serving as a surrogate father figure to Raziel, and he has assigned Kagami to watch over him. It should be noted, however, that Kagami does not enjoy this task at all, and while he's powerful enough to qualify as a three-dot mentor, he really doesn't take Raziel seriously yet.)

An unusually handsome and perceptive (read here-extra point in Appearance and Perception) Cannibal Bureaucrat, Beheris is an interesting case where a demon has begun to develop individuality, but not enough to apply for citizenship yet. Knowing this, he deliberately created an application in Raziel's name for a Familiar, in hopes that traveling with the young Malefactor would help him develop further. Despite his underhanded way of getting next to Raziel, he is actually one of the Infernal's closest friends and confidants, one of the few beings who he can confess his secret fears to. He has an Intimacy of Close Friendship with Raziel.

Cult (Apocalyptic) ●● (The Stewards of the Poisoned Gate are a cult that Raziel has built around himself, based around preparation for the Reclamation. It appeals to the disenfranchised and the survivalists of society, and it's strong sense of community holds it together despite a lack of fear for it's semi-divine patron. In Malfean terms, it is a bonded cult, meant more for infiltration then Essence.)

OK, since I assume our characters are going to be working together-which makes it a good thing that we collectively have Earth memories, as otherwise we would be a group of nemeses-we should probably start puzzling out how our characters met.

Starting off, Raziel and Orchid probably were introduced to each other when SWLiHN realized we are both self-inserts...which makes me doubly glad, as I doubt Elloge would be happy to discover the apparent Mary Sue invasion of Malfeas.

Well, each Infernal is introduced to all the other Infernals at their Exaltation party in Malfeas. So you two know each other, how well is up to you two. Amelia would likely know you as well, though not necessarily.

It is intended that you work together, although as you two are associated with totally different Yozis there might be some conflict there.

I'm good with us (Orchid/Raziel) being on good terms, but not necessarily mixing our plans so much as a two-person demonic gentleman's club/friendship. Our Yozis and our portfolios do not mix, but we're the only people around to talk with freely. I believe that LauWren is going to include our meeting alongside her sheet.

    Backstory
    Spoiler
    Show

Amelia grew up in the Lap. She was one of those people whom almost everyone seems to know, though not everyone always knew precisely why. She was bright, but not the brightest, a good singer, and something special, but not anymore intrinsically notable than the other children around. After awhile, it seemed like everyone knew her for being the girl everyone knew.
It probably had something to do with the fact that she had been sick for a year, when she was two, so much she couldn’t leave the house. Her mother had gotten her a pet bunny, which had been a constant companion until the brown sugar-furred little thing had fallen ill a few years later and died. Or that’s what she’d always assumed “not coming back” meant.
She believed that she had been ill by a ghost during that time, since it seemed to be a belief one outgrew. They had facts, it made sense, then, as they grew up, called it nonsense. Even if they’d seen the ghosts, they didn’t make people ill, they said. Except the children. They came up with ghost stories to tell about Eerie Amelia, though not past the age of eight, when they started to deign such things silly. Vengeful ghosts taking revenge for her mother hurting someone, an Abyssal who’d taken an interest, or a sneaky little draft that had kept her too cold to get well.
And so it came to pass that Amelia became every government official's sitter at age 18. Need your child to be somewhere else? Push them over to Amelia; she won't let them go until they've told her all the new stories the little ones made up. And the little ones loved her stories, too; Amelia told stories of what had happened when she was with the ghosts, or whoever else had taken her that week. It annoyed parents, occasionally, who would lose their children's attention whenever they passed Amelia, but they didn't mind much. Amelia would usher everyone along if it became too much trouble.
And so it came to pass that she saw the children she cared for grow up.
    Into servitude.
Into jobs that most of them enjoyed less than she liked hers, and some not at all.
And Amelia, the famous-for-no-reason, possibly-ill-for-a-year, darling little talespinner felt that this was wrong.
She spoke, first warily, then more openly, about becoming an entertainer when she grew up. Not until 43, of course, nothing so bold as that. And she found that everyone thought she could do it. And several answered the question she couldn't ask, without any prompting.
"If you'd been born anywhere else, you could do it now."
And something shifted uncomfortably in Amelia. The life was...boring. She wanted a place with some inspiration. Where she could bounce off a story about more than a two-year-old who happened to be missing a few lines in a family album. She wanted to leave.
And she was happy with her job. How did the little ones who grew up feel about it? The ones who would change jobs, given the chance, how trapped did they feel?
Amelia gathered those who were old enough to understand, young enough to have been in her care. And she asked a question that a great many had trouble answering aloud.
    "Are you happy?"
A handful nodded, smiling. A few looked away. Some watched her warily.
Amelia smiled at those who had smiled, playing her part. "Anyone who just nodded can go, if you like."
Two, only two, skipped off. The other three's expressions changed, and she saw children who had learned to hide that much. Everyone else stayed the same.
"I believe," she said softly, intention clear in tone but hidden in words, "I can fix that."
There was perfect, still silence. "Just us?"
"The more, the merrier." And silently, 'The more confusion, the better.'
And so it came to pass that the one person whose absence no one could miss escaped Lap.
It was easier than she'd expected, really. Walk with confidence until you've gotten so far the guards know something's wrong. Then they'll shout. She shouted back, everyone else's signal to that she'd begun being distracting, and sprinted.
She had planned this out. They’d go to Gem, and start out somewhere else peaceful, without the servitude. She'd picked up facts, and thought of places to stock up…and it wasn't enough.
She just kept running, pounding feet on whatever surface happened to be beneath them. She had to keep the guards away long enough to get the others out, if even one could get out it was worth her life but she needed to live until that happened. Just run. Just run...
And, in the moment she gave up on herself, but not the others, Luna appeared.
Amelia had a sense of passing through an odd doorway, and thought back on some dreams she’d had of another world. Somewhere she’d been more singer than storyteller, and much freer. They all seemed more real now, and somehow associated with butterflies, and bunnies. Words, and music, and pages and mathematics flowed through, but somehow the bunnies caught her eye. In any description she could give, it sounded unbearably cutesy, but Amelia saw ferocity in those rabbits.
She left for Gem, to check on the others.

    Personality
    Spoiler
    Show
Amelia’s fairly easygoing, but her emotions run high and she doesn’t exert too much control over them. If she’s angry, those around will notice, and if she’s sad, she retreats enough that those around her with any social skills tend to feel a little uneasy, but if she’s happy, it spreads just as easily. She tries not to hold grudges, as that’s negative energy with no constructive output. Freeing the Lap is the height of constructive outputs.

Amelia isn’t particularly tall or short, and has gained a muscled build since her becoming a Full Moon Lunar. Her hair is auburn, which looks stringy if she lets it grow out to any appreciable length, and her skin is a tan that has deepened from time in the sun. Her eyes are warm brown and only a shade or two darker than her skin at the moment.

I will now go crazy with the headings.

Primary: Amelia is looking for the children she freed from the Lap, both in order to know how many actually got out, and to see how they're doing now that they have.

Secondary: finding who else would actually want to help the people of the Lap, not that she expects much success on that front until she focuses on it.

Meeting: Crystal Orchid: I saw him walking home one day and recognized him with the help of the Lunar Bond. [Story version to come.]

EDIT: Story version--aetherialDawn wrote his part.

    Spoiler
    Show
Perfected Crystal Orchid is striding through the paths of the Bazaar, deftly dodging a pickpocket on his way back home. However, as he begins to consider the gossip on House Arbani he had picked up for the day, he starts to become more and more distant again, not noticing as the very same pickpocket steals his spare coin purse, and indeed not returning to the here and now until he bumps into someone rather roughly. Someone oddly... familiar? That doesn't make sense...

"Uf! Sorry, I didn't see you." Which probably didn't bode well for finding any of the people she was looking for. Or pickpockets, for that matter. Amelia blinks, trying to place the man in front of her. She didn't see anything in the features, but he seemed familiar...the way he stood, maybe?

Amelia saw the not-stranger pause too, and looked at him, a little puzzled. "Should I know you?"

Orchid pauses. Bumping into someone wasn't that odd, but being familiar to them - especially someone he hasn't seen before - is unusual. He shrugs, and says, "It's fine... But I don't think so. I rent a workshop just over that way." He gestures in the direction of a particularly bad neighborhood, although it's been getting a bit better recently. Some kind of vigilante. "Anyway, have a nice day, miss."

He continues on, but once the somewhat-familiar lady's back is turned, his eyes glint green with the senses of Malfeas as he senses her Essence - and Crystal Orchid immediately hurries back up beside her, and says, "Excuse me, miss, actually, I seem to be missing my coin purse. I'm sure you won't mind if we just step to the side for a bit so I can check." He murmurs something in a language at once foreign and old to you; Only your Earth memories recognize it, stirring, "Sister?" He can always claim that it's an Old Realm apology he learned from a savant-friend, after all.

Amelia represses a jolt of surprise, suddenly remembering exactly what she recognized. This should settle how real that realm is, if it's right. "Brother?" The word feels odd, she's never used it on this tongue, never used any of that language for anything but the occasional song.

Orchid nods softly at the single word, taking his apparently-sister's hand and pulling her away gently. "Why don't we go to my workshop, where it's quiet, and discuss this a bit more? I'm terribly sorry for pulling you aside about this when it turns out you didn't take my purse, and I can at least treat you to dinner." He says this in Flametongue, of course. No need for any more suspicious English use. His sister... And a Lunar, too, as his charms say.

Amelia is still confused about the whole situation, but nothing seems nearly dangerous enough to overwhelm her curiosity. She switches back to Flametongue as well, "That sounds lovely. Which way is it?"

"Ah, just over this way." He bows - a little too dramatically - and takes his sister's hand...

Oh, plot hooks and current activities. Sorry about that.

Well, Raziel is currently occupied with building his Cult, mainly through charity work and evangelism.

He also needs more money, because, street preacher look or no, being homeless is no damn fun.

And yes, I can see a friendship with Orchid. Not enough to build an intimacy yet, but enough to assure him of his sanity (but certainly not Corona-she's paranoid enough to think that Orchid is manipulating Raziel for his own ends).

He's currently located in Gem, were he's finding the disenfranchised are quite receptive to his idea of "equality for all".

Orchid has his rented forge, which probably provides a good temporary house for Raziel when he can't find anything else... But for reasonable deniability purposes, probably best not to be too close, just in case one of us slips up and the Dynasts come a-knocking. I just happen to be rather charitable to a particular homeless guy, because he provides a good chat. Nobody needs to know that that chat happens in English, or involves discussing the finer points of what we think of Hell. Good?

As for what Melodies Within Fog thinks of Raziel... Not a lot. He's appropriately paranoid about the immediate environment, since he has no desire to die an unfated death just because he escaped his fated one, but Tomescu are descended from Swirly and Raziel fits within his calculations - even if those calculations had to be expanded a bit to involve this weird Earth thing.

It occurs to me that our Coadjutors might not understand English very well. I'm sure I cannot stress how amazingly useful this might be if we need to discuss something that the Yozis absolutely must not know no matter what.

Oh, and of course a further plot hook for Orchid... He does occasionally play the vigilante, and while his disguises are enough to set off the Illusion effect and fool anyone not using charms, they're intentionally the minimum necessary so that if he really needs to skip town, he can go totally different and nobody will suspect a thing. Even a dragonblood could see through his disguise and recognize the local vigilante if they were in the habit of activating non-excellency stealth-piercing charms on random folks.

So... Where's Drascin? It looks like the Infernals are joined up, the Lunars are at least not-unfriendly, we have a link between the Infernals and the Lunars... All we need is to link our resident Terrestrial and Sidereal into this group and we have a full set of unlikely heroes (Plus one Terrestrial. Terrestrials are supposed to be heroes.)

EDIT: I will be away all of the 17th, flying home for winter break. Also, can I use Swirly's Perfect Parry even against things that can't be perfect parried, since a) It's not actually a parry, it negates the attack itself (Much like the Malfeas PD, it's just called a perfect parry) and b) It tries to justify its expense and its extra-bad Flaw by saying 'but you can Stunt it away, wasting valuable resources everyone else gets too!'

    Artifact ● (Starmetal Smashfists)
Allies ●● (Ishi-Ko, Goddess of Joyful Discoveries; Numin, Chosen of Journeys)

    Ishi-Ko
    Spoiler
    Show
Much like Drake, Ishi-ko is a person between two divisions - she works for the Forbidding Manse of Ivy as a god of discovery, but her portfolio has a great overlap with that of the Chosen of Serenity. Her open, happy, encouraging nature also doesn't bring her many friends among the generally serious and mystery-connoisseur gods of the Division of Secrets, which has her rather lonely and tending to turn to the Sidereals for conversation.

It was in one of these that, curious about the unusual sight of a chosen of Venus around her workplace (since Drake took to the massive libraries of the Division of Secrets like a fish to water from his very first day), she started conversation with Drake. They clicked pretty well pretty quick, both sharing a love of finding out new things and using them for the betterment of others, and loving to quip about the disgraceful state of the Bureaucracy when it comes to the handling of data and the annoying detachment of half everyone at the Bureau - they disagree in some things about what should be done (Drake is not quite as free and open as Ishi-ko), but overall they get along famously.

At the moment, Drake counts Ishi-Ko as one of his best friends, and the goddess does the same in turn, helping each other survive in the web of absurdities that is Heaven without losing their faith in the universe as a whole (prolonged contact with Heavenly Bureaucracy will do that) and going for tea and pastries afterwards.

    Numin
    Spoiler
    Show
Sidereals are reputed to be serious, prescient, overplanning, and control freaks. But in the opinion of most people in the Bureau, Numin may be a case study of the exact opposite. Never where he should be, always moving around, and a total slacker, Numin has got more reprimands from his superiors in a year than most Sidereals get in ten. He has a pretty well-worked reputation of knowing more about Heaven's alehouses than he does about his desk.

He is, however, a lot smarter than he looks, and despite his reputation, the scrawny, agile Sidereal has a canny ability for picking up stray bits of info from his forays into the great breweries of Heaven - he may not know the first thing about a library, but you won't find many people more adept at "reading a street" than this drunk vagabond. To which Drake picked up pretty quickly after they met by happenstance, and about which they had a fairly epic battle of wits that culminated in Drake getting a pretty big practical joke to the face (involving two Essence Flare pillars, a horse, and a rather unusual use for several astrological instruments - his feet hurt for two weeks after that - and them both bonding over it in laughter). After that, they like to keep contact with each other and both prank each other every now and then and tell each other stories of how things are going.

His laziness is very much not feigned, though, which is why he prefers to sneak his findings into his superiors' desks anonymously, that they don't saddle him with more work. He suspects chances are they have a guess where the papers come from, but Drake helps him cover his tracks, and somehow his superiors don't seem to care much. The fact he's getting a reduced Salary during it probably helps - Drake has had to help Numin monetarily a couple times, but what the man takes in money, he brings back in good company and juicy rumors. Besides, Sideral salaries are huge for the kind of spartan lifestyle Drake prefers, so it's not like he can't spare a bit

    Salary ●●●
    Savant ●●●
    Manse ●●●

    Spoiler
    Show
    The Observatory

A hidden Sidereal-aspected manse in the mountains near Gem that did the work of observatory for a couple Sidereals in the Division of Secrets for many years, when Drake got assigned to the area Ishi-Ko pointed the place to him as a good place to base himself in.

The Observatory is a beautiful construction accessible through a hidden passage that opens to a cliff - really hard to pinpoint if you don't know where to look.

Once you enter, you are greeted to the sight of a beautiful crystal passage of mirrors twinkling in starlight (despite the manse being a cllosed building). The entrance passage comes to end in the room that is the Manse's center - a round room with a mosaic floor (the mosaic shows the five signs of the Maidens around a five-pointed star), mirrored walls, a great big round table (usually covered with astrological instruments) and five doors that lead to the different rooms of the building, each marked with one sign.

What usually calls the newcomer's attention, though, is the ceiling. Because it seems to be but a big glass lens that shows you the night sky - even during the day, and even being that directly above the Observatory what there is is a hundred tons of rock, not sky. Looking on it, one gets a certain feeling of irreality, of things to come.

The manse is furbished for habitation by several people - the door with Venus's symbol leads to four double rooms, usually kept clean and in shape by the Manse's magic. It comes with a small library (Jupiter's door), a small kitchen... all the basic amenities, if spartan, magically capable of refilling themselves to hold about six people comfortably.

    Powers:
    +Divine Observatory (2 points)
    +Well-Flavored Aspect (Sidereal) (One Point)
    +Magical Conveniences (One point)
+Connection to the Loom (homebrew power) (Three points)
-1-dot Fragility (the whole first hallway is made of glass, after all, as is the roof) (+1 point)

Connections ●● (The Forbidding Manse of Ivy)
    Spoiler
    Show
A regular fixture at the Forbidding Manse's libraries, Drake knows several of the Sidereals of the division personally and is pretty well informed about what goes inside. His love of knowledge, perpetual readiness to help find that one file that got lost, and personal friendship with one of the gods of the Division make him a welcome visitor.

    Connections ●●(The Bureau of Nature)
    Spoiler
    Show
Drake enjoys greatly what passes for meteorology and biology in Creation, while the gods in the Division are entirely too used to nearly everyone in Heaven snubbing them for being "less important" than the people at Humanity and Destiny (the work of the Bureau of Nature is generally considered "easy" and "for idiots" among other gods, kind like you'd regard rednecks). It is not hard to see why the inhabitants of this Bureau would be entirely to happy to foster relations with someone from the Bureau of Destiny that is willing to take into account climatic and natural consequences instead of just pressing the red button on a whim! Several of the gods in the division hold Drake in a fair amount of esteem, considering him a nice apple in a bad bucket, and this brings Drake many a juicy tibdit about upcoming natural phenomena

Backing ●● (The Cerulean Lute of Harmony)
    Spoiler
    Show
Despite his lack of field experience, Drake is a fairly trusted person in the House of Venus - even in Heaven's Whorehouse, someone has to pay a mind to the accounting books, and despite his grumbling and sarcasm, Drake is among the ones who do so. Most Sidereals and gods in the division are at least passing acquaintances with him, and he has a reputation for being trustworthy, helpful, and unconcerned with politics - quite a recommendation in the byzantine politics of the Cerulean Lute.

However, his backing can be a bit limited in places, due to the dislike between him and Golden Reverie, the God of Euphoria and one of the biggest shots in the division. Where Golden Reverie would that the whole of Creation was in a haze of drug-induced pleasure, Drake has no qualms with saying outloud not only that would such a thing destroy Creation, but also that he considers such things the resources of feeble, stupid minds who can't find true pleasure (such as the pleasure of a good book, a friend, a piece of music) and instead must deceive their brains by addling them to convince themselves. It so comes as no surprise that they can't stand the sight of each other, and Golden Reverie does tend to put obstacles to Drake's ability to requisition bigger things when he notices, the same way that Drake has taken it onto himself to discredit Reverie if possible - which is the reason for a low Backing score in a division where he's plenty trusted otherwise

Backing ●● (The Convention of Fire)
    Spoiler
    Show
By comparison, Drake's Backing score in the Convention does not come from superior dislike, but simply from inexperience. Drake was co-opted by Nazri, the chair of the Convention of Fire, but a few months ago. This surprised no one, as Drake had not shown signs of wanting to join neither the Bronze nor the Gold factions, and Nazri is well known as the biggest patron for Independents in the Bureau.

What few tasks he's been asked, Drake has performed without a problem, but he's still not too into the convention's system, still being an outlier until he can prove himself through some field work.

Unending Drake's life was not a very eventful affair before the Exaltation he was destined for found him. Born to a servant couple in the Blessed Isle, he quickly showed a pretty good head for lore and numbers, quickly becoming apprentice to the accountants and loremasters.

He was good at what he did, but his trouble with taking authority at face value and his laziness never allowed him to really prosper - every time he seemed to be gaining prestige, he used a word he really shouldn't in front of a Patrician, or procrastinated something he didn't consider important despite his superiors disagreeing and back to square one it was.

This changed, though, when he got picked as a servant for one Dragonblood kid from house V'Neef. An impatient one with no time for ceremonies and very demanding, he was a really tough boss, which worked Drake to the bone by having him sneak in and out of the house's libraries to get arcane tomes that his mother dissapproved of (as the child wished to learn Sorcery and the occult, while her mother was trying to mold him into a courtier). Needless to say, flubbing the house's matron while helping someone learn was something that made Drake feel some quite indecent glee, so he never complained one bit. He even made sure to try to study a bit from over the child's shoulder, and he learned music at his master's behest to alleviate his headaches. These were harsh, but satisfactory years.

But then his master finally managed to beat his mother and get sent to the Heptagram, which caused Drake to be redirected into library duty. Which was back to boring as susual... for a few months, before something happened.

One day, he got up, and he felt... strange. Weird. A bit chipper, but, above all... light. But that wasn't the problem. The problem was that nobody else remembered him. It was... terrifying. He spoke to people, and they seemed to remember him for a second, and then, soon as he stopped, they seemed to forget him anew, treating him as a new servant man every time they saw him. Even his friends seemed to forget about him. He was lost, and scared, even as he tried to keep a stiff upper lip.

Well, it seemed he was cursed. He'd read about name-destroying curses, once. Made people not know you. But who would curse him? He had no enemies, that he knew...

In any case, nothing to do in this house until he could find a way to break the curse. So he picked some things (some that weren't his, but he considered it a case of great need and they'd forget who took them in a couple hours, anyway...) and went away. He didn't make it too far from the city before a man in a purple robe appeared before him, seeming to know who he was... and explained. He wasn't cursed. He was Exalted - as a Sidereal, the hidden exalts that work to keep Fate in check. Drake was suspicious for a while, but, what had he to lose? He went with the man, and was taken to Yu-Shan.

From there, it was a couple years of the most intensive and ball-breaking training anyone could ever want. The Sidereals don't kid around when it comes to preparing their agents. Martial arts, social tricks, music, lore that was lost since millenia ago... sixteen hour days, day in and day out, until his brain felt about to explode. He longed for the days when he just had to spend hours carrying heavy books around. But, no quitters. He'd also elearned what Sidereals did - guard the world from mystc threats, much like Dragonblooded had shielded it from the physical ones. If he split, it would be one less person keeping things in check, which could mean hundreds of dead...

    Drake pressed on.

He did so until he passed, and was issued a job in the Bureau of Destiny. By then, Drake already was pretty jaded about Yu-Shan as a whole the open bribes flying around, the disastrous bureaucracy... but better to curse and work, than run. so he took to his job. As a relative puritan (no brain-addling substances for him) in Heaven's Whorehouse, he was a bit out of it for a while, but he acclimated himself in the end, finding a niche in the more theatrical side of the House of Venus... and minding the goddamned accounting books (the holes in which were almost big enough to have their own associated gods). He talked with people, made friends, and got to trying to fix as much as he could instead of spending his time facepalming until his face was permanently hand-shaped, as was his first instinct.

And so months went by... until a certain night. A night where hehad a really weid dream. A dream about another world, where magic and Essence were not, but technology conquered all. And as he woke up, he realized he had two sets of memories. His own... no, that's not right. Both were his own now. He was Drake, and he was Drascin.

To most people, this might have been a revelation. To both people in Drake's head, with their mix of practical and surreal mindset, it was more a case of wondering whether he was just insane and making it up in a fit of schizophrenic delusion, or if two people from alternate universes really had touched each other and shared memories. Second option seemed more likely, given he now knew terms like "schizophrenic" which do not actually exist in Creation, and anyway it would seriously tax any brain to make up such detailed recollections in one night. And, well. He worked every day with myth and fate on one side, and computer dreams on the other. It'd take more than that to faze them - him.

Now the question was, how to put all this new knowledge to use? The Bureau could certainly use a little database technology. He should probably tell Ichi, too, in case this all started to make him act weird (Note: "Ichi" is Drake's affectionate nickname for Ishi-Ko. She more-or-less believed him, though she still thinks it's more than a little weird, but she agreed to keep his secret). It's always good to have someone you trust checking you in case you go insane, when under weird interdimensional effects.

And so, days pass, until Nazri calls him for an assignment in Gem (the details of which will be up to the ST), and he has to head there - though at least, when he told her later, Ichi pointed him at an old hidden Sidereal Manse in the nearby mountains she remembers for him to use as base, so he'd have a decent place to hide when he didn't want to lie anymore.

And at this juncture we start...

    Personality
    Spoiler
    Show

In a first contact, Drake seems an apathetic and cynical young man that seems ill-fit for the merry house of Venus. However, this belies his basic nature - that of a self-sacrificing protector that derives his greatest satisfactions from a job well done and people being happy. It's just that the Heavenly Bureaucracy that he spends his days in is so very not conducive to such things, which he copes with through biting sarcasm and general snarky dismissiveness.

Rather unsubtle and principled for a Sidereal, and quite more direct and self-restrained than is usual in the house of Venus, but in truth quite friendly and always willing to lend a hand, Drake is relatively well known among Sidereals for voicing rather unusual and borderline heretical opinions at times, but definitely knowing his stuff, having an incredible sense of empathy and ability to find a third way out of lose-lose situations, and being able to get ovations from gods when he gets drafted into the Cerulean Lute's regular theatre plays.

He is, however, fairly lazy in some ways. He will never skirt duty, but he will try to shake unneeded jobs as much as possible. His mantra is "If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing perfectly. That said, there are a great many jobs not worth doing!", usually accompanied by a smirk.

He also tends to dislike direct combat, being of the opinion that usually by the time you have to fall back on punching people, means you've already failed beyond recovery, and prefers to play things safe.

    Appearance

A young Vizier with a near-perpetual despaired smirk and prying, curious gaze, Unending Drake is a bit short, of slightly tanned skin, black hair and brown eyes. He's less fit than the average Sidereal, not being very strong due to his small physique. His getup is usually fairly simple, thought more for comfort than being eye-catching - though his simple tunics are usually acceptably stylish in a scholarly way, if unlikely to turn any heads from the cool. He almost always carries around either some book or his instrument, usually both (tunics have space for a lot of pockets), and walks around with a fast, impatient pace that seems to say he'd like to be at his destination already

And now, for why I'm in Gem... I figured the head of my Convention (in this case, Nazri) would be sending me here, to check on something or do something. The question is what.

Well, for one, with all these new Essence users doing weird things to the Loom (especially the two Infernals, who being Outside Fate are basically a walking disaster zone for destiny), it could be understandable they'd send someone to keep a watch. And Drake needed an assignment to prove himself capable to the Convention of Fire anyway. He'd probably wander around a bit under a Resplendent Destiny or two (can I begin play with a couple Destinies, Recaiden? I honestly figure Drake would have spent a few days readying something after getting the assignment), keep an eye on things, probably act as a mendicant street performer under a Musician constellation - beggars got all the juicy info - or getting into some wealthy family's payroll as a subordinate scholar under the Key one.

Also, going around with Lotus Eye tactics would probably give some of the people in the group off as curious - normal people don't have 5s in Martial Arts, so LauWren's character at least would ping Drake's radar as someone to keep an eye on

LauWren, I was pretty much thinking that, since we're both from the south, it'd be natural for us to know about each other. Not much more than name, caste, spirit shape, but that's still more than we know about most of the circle.

I am totally inside Fate. I am legitimately stealing that Pattern Spider work to pretend to be inside Fate!

It looks like the current connections can be plotted as thus:

    Drake -> Raziel
    |========^
    |========|
    v========v
    Amelia <-> Orchid
    ^
    |
    v
    Onyx Wing

And then Pyrus off to the side.

    Rhyvurg, get yourself some connections!

Drake only seems to be Anathema AND only seems to be homeless! What do you do about him?

(Orchid and Raziel, on the other hand... Our job description is 'Bring Hell to Creation' - we just aren't terribly motivated to be all that evil. Minor annoyances, really. It wouldn't even be that bad, what we're doing, if it weren't part of the grand scheme to free the Yozis.)

    Also... Pyrus -> Homeless People?

Then again, given the basic state of Yozi existence is "stoned out of their minds"...

What, you thought Hegra was allowed to roam around Malfeas because he likes her? ...Well, he does, but it's really thanks to her self-generated supply. The position on his friends list came after he realized that.

Though now that I think of it, her drug supply could be part of the gods clever plan to keep the Yozis imprisoned...

    Sol: "All right, we won!"

Luna: "Yeah, but the Ebon Dragon didn't bite it. How are we supposed to prevent him from finding a loophole?"

Sol: "Oh yeah that...Maidens, you got any ideas?"

Venus: "Hey...Isn't Hegra still alive, too?"

Sol: "Yeah, she is, but I don't see how....oh. *grins mischievously*"

    later...

A Demon Who Is Definitely Not a Shapeshifted Luna: "*sigh*; You know, Hegra, no one seems to like us. It's not their fault really, it's just the sensation of being bound by a single perspective..."

And I imagine Raziel's talks with Pyrus usually involve something like this.
My Homestuck role is Thane of Space of the Land of Insanity and Frogs.

    The Malkavians would be proud.

The idea of Sol grinning mischievously is...terrifying for some reason.

Also, reading the daystar fluff from Ink Monkeys really makes me feel sorry for the guy.

"So, Drake is it? You're a Sidereal?...
Our bosses are crazy. We'd be willing to give your bosses a try."

If this actually happens, I will be... surprised. But not quite so far as amazed. And depressingly as far as the world of Exalted goes, it's likely to be slowed most by the fact that Heaven is so bad itself; Yes, more by that than even by Orchid being an outside-fate demon-merged avatar of doom.

It looks like the current relationships center, as far as such a thing can be said, on Pyrus, by virtue of him offering rooms to the homeless members of our party (And Drake, who just pretends to be homeless.) Our non-homeless members (Orchid/Amelia, a smith and a mercenary respectively) both have ties back to some of those people. The furthest outliers are Amelia and Drake, Amelia because she only vaguely knows Onyx and is thus not well connected to Pyrus. Drake because... Well, Sidereal. Sidereals have other concerns, and there is no-one who knows that you are a Sidereal. But that's probably fine, we can have one sixth ranger, and Amelia just needs to know Onyx (and thus Pyrus) better.

If everyone is good with that... All we need is a reason for these bonds to come together, yeah?

@Dawn: The fact that we all speak English is pretty interesting, too, no? And we have several people who could reasonably inform one other member of the group... Raziel tells you (conversations previously mentioned), either you tell me or I overhear when I'm coming by your forge, etc. If nothing else, one or more of us might swear in English. I can't speak for anyone else, but my character's pretty interested in language, just as a side of the whole storytelling thing.

I dunno. This may look weird in the morning.

How about only Onyx Wing yet knows Pyrus and is crashing on his couch?

Raziel remains a homeless street preacher, who knows Amelia and Orchid and Drake. Best watch that no one in power gets wind of your highly illegal Yozi cult.

Drake knows of Raziel (who is messing up fate a fair bit) and vice versa. And yes, you may have a destiny in play. You were sent here because something odd was happening to threads of destiny that passed near Gem, that didn't fit standard Essence-expenditure distortions.

Orchid and Amelia know each other and Raziel.

    Amelia also knows Onyx Wing.

Raziel and Orchid are also aware of another Infernal operating in this Gem-area, Enduring Alloyed Laurel, Scourge.
