    Default LA vs. ECL

    Quick question guys. How does ECL work in 3.5? For example, a gnoll has 2 racial HD and an LA of +1. So, is a level 1 gnoll the equivalent of a second level character, or a fourth level one?

    Fourth level. Add hit dice and LA to get ECL- 2+1+1=4.
