    Default Undead Master vairent class/ACF

Specialist Wizard Vairent: The Undead Master

Necromancy is a poor choice for most wizards. While a necromancer wizard can exert some control over negative energy his necromantic prowess often lacks in comparison to clerics and dread necromancers. Thus, while most wizards focus on using using more traditional arcane magics to compliment their necromantic power, there are the stubborn few who desire to have legions of undead who's size and scale matches that of clerics. To these wizards the meager offerings traditional arcane teachings offer the necromancy is not enough.

These dark wizards, an attempt to gain greater power over the forces of life and death, forgo much of the traditional arcane teachings and delve into divine texts as well as the arcane. Due to this they neglect many of the traditional abilities of the wizard but in return gain cleric-like powers over undeath, learning to cast spells normally available only to servants of the gods as arcane spells while at the same time maintaining some of their mpre traditional arcane magics. Power-hungry and ruthless, these Undead Masters seek to command massive undead legions and conquer kingdoms and even entire worlds.

    Alignment: Any non-good.

Hit Dice: Same as a standard wizard.

BaB: Same as a standard wizard.

Base Save Bonuses: Same as standard wizard.

Class Skills: Same as standard Wizard.

    Class Features:

The undead master is for all intent and purposes a wizard specialized in Necromancy. Thus, for feats, PrC entry and other purposes he is considered a necromancy specialist wizard. However, he dose not gain the normal benefits a specialist wizard gains. Likewise, he loses his familiar and the ability to scribe scrolls. In addition, if an Undead Master gains the ability to scribe scrolls in any other way(including the feat Scribe Scroll) he can only scribe scrolls of necromancy school spells. Like a a standard specialist wizard, an Undead Master must chose two schools to ban. He must also chose an additional third school to "neglect." An Undead Master who prepares spells from his Neglected school must use two spell slots of that level to prepare the spell. (For example, if an Undead Master with Enchantment as a Neglected school wanted to prepare a sleep spell he must expend two of his available 1st-level spell slots instead of one to prepare that spell.) In addition, an Undead Master takes a 4 penalty on any skill checks made when crafting a magic item that has a spell from his Neglected school as a prerequisite.

The Undead Master keeps his bonus feats but can not select his bonus feats from the list a normal wizard can. Instead, he must select bonus feats from the following list: Fell Animate, Fell Drain, Fearsome Necromancy, Spell Focus: Necromancy, Greater Spell Focus: Necromancy, and all corpsecrafter feats. In addition, a Undead Master is no longer able to use any magic items related to his banned schools. While these sacrifices are great, for these losses, the Undead Master gains a number of powerful abilities over the undead.

At 1st level an Undead master gains the ability to Rebuke Undead as an evil cleric of his character level a number of times per-day equal to 3+ his cha modifier. This ability is advanced by any PrC which advances rebuking. In addition, an Undead Master can learn Necromancy spells from any spell list as arcane spells provided he/she have them in written form. An undead Master can also learn necromancy spells from the cleric list as bonus spells from leveling up as arcane spells. However, half of the spells known that a Undead Master gains from leveling up must be from the wiz/sorc spell list.(So a Undead Master who reached level 2 could learn 1 wiz/sorc spell and 1 cleric-list necromancy spell or 2 wiz/sorc spells but not 2 cleric-list necromancy spells. If an undead master gains more then 2 bonus spells each level for some reason(The collegiate wizard feat, for example) the limit is still applied.(So an Undead Master with the collegiate wizard feat could learn, at maximum, 2 cleric-list necromancy spells(instead of the usual 1) from leveling up.) Any spells gained in either of these two ways(As bonus spells or learned from scrolls, spellbooks ect..) are arcane spells and are cast, prepaired and treated like any other spell the undead Master has learned.

In addition, the Undead Master gains some cleric-esc powers. The Undead Master can rebuke undead as an evil cleric of the same level a number of times per day equal to 3+ his cha modifier. In addition, the Undead Master gains the granted power of the deathbound domain(But not the domain itself). The Undead Master is not treated as if he draws power from and has dose not access to any domain(s) despite having the granted power of the deathbound domain.

An Undead Master gains a select number of spells that he is able to add to his known spells. At 1st level and every level after at which he gains access to a new spell level he adds the spell from the following list of the highest level he can cast to his known spells as an arcane necromancy spell. Level 1: Detect Undead, Level 2: Desecrate(As a necromancy spell instead of an evocation spell.), Level 3: Animate Dead, Level 4: Death Ward, Level 5: Slay Living, Level 6: Harm, Level 7: Destruction, Level 8: General of Undeath, level 9: Mass Harm. These spells are considered arcane spells of the necromancy school(Even if necromancy is not the school it is normally in.) that is treated no different then any other arcane spell the Undead Master can prepare and cast.

My big issue with the class on a first runthrough is that not only are you losing three schools, two of them are very important ones (transmutation is the biggest and most versatile school in the game, and divination has a bunch of crucial spells). That is a pretty serious hit.

The domains are nice, but the key spells from them are already on your list except for Desecrate, which is not hard to pick up with a feat. Basically the only benefit you get is that you pick up the spells a little early, which is admittedly nice. The extra undead limit boost from Deathbound is good but is overwritten by a later class feature.

Zone of Desecration is not a very good benefit. You already have Desecrate from the Undeath domain, so the biggest benefit (better undead creation) is covered, so basically this is just a minor buff. Definitely not worth the loss of all the buffs in Transmutation.

The level 8 benefit is the big reason to take this ACF - there's no good reason to stick around instead of PrCing out after this. The problem here is that Dread Necromancers get this benefit at level 8 because level 8 is when they first learn Animate Dead - your Undead Master gets Animate Dead at level 5 (Undeath domain gives it as a level 3 spell). Why level 8 for this class feature, then?

The fluff calls the Undead Master a "master of fiends" who is "adept at binding them to his service". There are no fiend-related class benefits except the capstone at 20. That's not exactly mastery.

Yeah, the reason to lose transmutation, illusion and divination where made purely on a fluff basis. The original kit lost alteration, illusuion and major divination. Alteration is closest to transmutation hence why I lost it. However, if it's still that much a seirous hit then should I just say "screw sticking to 2e flavor" and just say you can chose whatever three schools you want that are not necromancy, enchantment and conjuration?

Also, I am not good at making new abilities myself. I usually just pull from already exsisting stuff and alter it to fit my needs. When I make my own abilites they are either overpowered or underpowered. I can never seem to find ballance. So if you have abilites to sugjest be my guest. Otherwise I can just scrap this idea all togther and just play a Death Master or, as said earler, allow you to chose banned schools rather then ban the 3.5e equlivilent of what was banned in 2e and say all the domain spells count as necromancy instead of their own school.(So you can ban evocation and still cast desecrate...a vital spell for any necromancer.)

I'm pretty sure the Deathbound Domain's power makes it so undead you create have a maximum of 3hd/level instead of 2hd/level and that is different than undead you control as that has 4hd/level, although I don't have the book on me, so I could be wrong.
Plus, this looks like a good alternate class feature for the wizard.

Yeah, though I worry that losing transmutation is a big deal power-wise. However, however, I think that instead of losing transmutation and diviniation that this ACF should make you lose three schools of your choice, but have the Undead Master be able to cast all spells gained from the undeath domain as Necromancy spells meaning the Undead Master can still cast Desecrate if he bans evocation. Also, I severed all ties to 2e and made the ACF it's own thing. I also added an undead fammilar at level 5 and lost the Dread Necro power but in it's place gave the class the ability to learn cleric spells of the necromancy school both from scrolls and also as bonus spells from leveling up.(with some restrictions.)
