Default What are the rules to judge legal summons?

I'm currently looking into which monsters are good for summon monster, other than those listed in PH, however when i come to think about it I can't see what would allow me to summon other then the PH specific mentioned creatures - to me the spell description seems pretty specific to only include those mentioned.

.... but on the other hand it doesn't make sense that threads like http://http://community.wizards.com/...e_Monster_List exists if sommons are so limited

Anyone that can help me out with the RAW on this?

Most creatures of the Summon Monster and Summon Nature's Ally lists have a CR that is equal to the spell level. I think that's the only kind of guideline there really is.

If you want RAW: Newer books have new monsters. Some of them, in their description, have an entry saying that they may be summoned via Summon monster/Summon nature's ally xx.

If you don't want RAW talk to your DM.

If you are the DM - make your judgment by comparing the monster with those listed in PHB and make your ruling.

Some monsters have a substitution specifically offered in their write ups (ie, 'this monster may be summoned with a SM (X)' or 'if you so choose, substitute the Celestial Foo in SM (X) for this creature.') There are also feats and PrCs that can expand or alter your summon lists, but I think most of the extra options come from the monster writeups.

I saw "judge" and "legal summons" and thought this thread was about something else.
