Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
I disagree, I much, much, much prefer it when someone retains the image in the quote. This is courteous to everyone trying to read and understand the conversation. Images are only loaded once, no matter how many times they are linked (not to mention cached), and you don't have to follow quote links to understand what is going on. The original poster retains control of the image by simply removing or renaming the image from the server.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
Well, nevermind then. I, personally, hate it.
And I didn't say the poster loses control, I said it's easier to retain it.
Hyothetical example: I take dozens of pictures of Pudding Troll. I post a few here for people to see and send my mother, who's not so good with computers, an email with several links for her to be able to look at the pictures too. I realize I've inadvertantly linked to a picture that I don't feel the Playground needs to see anymore for some reason but I don't mind if Ma still sees it. I can remove the picture from my post and be done with it, or I can change the name of the file and resend it to Ma and have her ask me why I sent her "the same" link again (or forget to resend it and have her call me asking why the link doesn't work anymore). Or, in my specific case, since my parents are remarried, I have to do this with two moms, three sets of grandparents and ten pairs of aunts and uncles, just on my side of the family.
Okay, maybe it's an extreme example (though true), but I don't think "I don't want the Playground to see it anymore, but there are others who I don't mind seeing it" is an unreasonable scenario.
We'll have to agree to disagree.Want to meet some of the most awesome people on the internet? Come to the Baltimore/DC Area RenFest Meetup 2012!

Mod-battle! :O
My couple of pence: I prefer it if they leave it in but don't mind if they don't, unless they're talking about a specific picture in which case I'd at least like a description of it.The Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
I wouldn't call it a battle . And it's not even moderation related...
In those cases, it would be reasonable to ask the person to remove the image from their post. Most posters would be happy to oblige.
Also, once the thread is locked (as it is every 50 pages), not even the original poster can edit the image out.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
As to photo control if I no longer want someone to see a picture of me I remove it from where I have it uploaded. Then regardless of a thread being locked or no there is no image to retrieve. *shrug* I forget what I have linked anyway and just manage my photo file on the server. Easier for me.
I agree with the loading time issue and the courtesy issue of not linking again to their photo... but sometimes it is harder to carry on a conversation about a photo when you don't show it sometimes. I dunno... I vary.
Though thankfully quoting someone has that handy green link back to their original post so it's still easier to keep up. Though then you have to load the whole page again... rather than just the one image. Hmm...

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
I got to thinking about this more on the ride home from work this morning. Regarding "does it load multiple times or no?" I trust Rawhide that it doesn't if it's on the same page. But this leaves two scenarios. Either the conversation spans pages and I *do* have to load it again (or am I mistaken on that point too? it's possible), even though I just looked at it, or the images are on the same page and it's not that hard to just scroll up the page a bit, usually not even that far. (For instance, SMEE posted some lovely pictures of her kittens and new skirt. The post immediately following had them again. The next response was also about those photos, but they were snipped. Was anyone truly put out that a response two posts down didn't have the images in them also?)
Trog - There's a difference between "I don't want someone to see this photo" and "I don't want anyone to see this photo".
Meh, anyway, I'm starting to feel I'm in the minority here, so I'll just leave it at that.Want to meet some of the most awesome people on the internet? Come to the Baltimore/DC Area RenFest Meetup 2012!

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
Mutton chops? Hmmm. How can I put this succinctly?
HELL! NO!
Sideburns and mutton chops are pet hates of mine. I just don't think they look good on me. Ever.
This last picture was from last year when I was trying for the full beard, which in the end didn't work out.
The pics i posted on the last page are my new project, but it somehow seems that the beard has just stopped growing any more. I'm not getting the desired length (well, the length I'd like to aim for) at all.
If I were to decide that I didn't want people to see my pictures anymore, I'd probably either just delete them from my web storage space, or just rename them.
If I had set up a web page or something for family and relatives to look at, I'd most likely upload double copies of the pictures, where one copy would be for the 'family site' and one would be for other uses, such as the GitP forum.
A little bit extra work, but not that much. Just a matter of uploading them into different folders, still using the same name, but the URLs would differ.
So, for the GitP Forum, it'd be something like:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/kureshtin/images/Bouncer.jpg
and for the family site I could use:
http://myspace.tiscali.co.uk/kureshtin/pics/Bouncer.jpg
And since no one at the GitP forums would know about the folder /pics/, they'd not be able to see the pictures in that folder.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
Well, I will still address the issues raised.
No matter how many times it is linked on a page, it will only download once. If it has already been downloaded on the same or a different page, it will not download again (net result of only one download).
Clicking to go back up to find the image is really quite inconvenient, more so when it's more than just two posts away, finding the image on a previous page even more so.
Having to reload one or two images if they are no longer in the cache is outweighed by having to reload every single image on the previous page to find that image.
So, I think it is far better to leave such images in a quoted post.

Re: You! (A picture/Media thread) XXVII : Curse of the Cute
Well, yeah, but you could get that by just checking the directory of the pictures I post on here all the time.
And since that's the folder I have all the pics that I post on here, you'd still not be able to find the folder that I use for pics that would be for my family pics.
