Do you use your followers ECL or Level?

When making followers, do you use the ECL or the level?

I want to use Midgaurd Dwarfs as workers but I don't have any level 5 followers.

A midgard dwarf would normally be a Cohort that item creation thing is pretty badas if i recall.

But you would use their ECL otherwise you could easily create a follower that is stronger tan a PC if you ignored LA

ECL would be the most appropriate. Also remember that you can get people to follow you and do stuff for you without using the Leadership feat.

Well I am a thrallherder so I want to take advantage of that as best as possible.
