Forming an idea. Good competition concept.

EDIT: My DM has been looking for a creature who fits the contest's theme for a while. I'll be tying him into the Infernal Monster discipline that Xefas made. This will be fun.

I'm glad to hear it. I'll admit I was a bit worried, when picking up one of the most consistently awesome contests on GitP, that I'd be unable to live up to it. This is a considerable relief, actually.

Awesome. That discipline always intrigued me in concept (I'll admit I haven't read all the way through it yet), so I'm curious to see what you have in store.

My idea: a creature that starts out young, grows to middle age, becomes elderly, and then is reborn young again. They wouldn't die, but they would have new memories each time they were reborn. Thoughts?

There you are, the visceral horde is ready for the first reviews. This IS the first draft, though, so keep that in mind.

It's sorta designed to fit into my new campaign setting, but the influence isn't that heavy.

Oh, man, I so want to convert the Deva from 4e into a 3.5 monster, now! That won't work for this contest, though (obviously converting something isn't making an original monster), so I'll have to think of something...

    Cool theme, by the way.

    Now, this is nice...
Though it's difficult not to fall into the clichès of immortal monsters...
(And even more difficult to take one of those and rework it into something fresh and with style, not going there).

Was thinking a sort of inevitable... then an undying man grown mad... until I saw this:
    Spoiler
    Show

For some reason it inspired me to make a "Shadow Imp" (working title) who leaves a shadow print when he loses conciousness, from where he spawns again at death, all the information about him stored in a flat surface (holograms, anyone?).
But here's the catch: the spawn may reconstruct the original creature via a touch. Now you're facing two of them. (until a limit of the original's HD).

Not sure how this works, may I call for opinions? or is everyone left to his own?

The Fireborn's base and fluff is up. I will get on the abilities in a bit, don't really have the time to get all of them up right now.

Interesting concept, and that could make for quite an unusual fight, depending on the time frame of the duplication.

You're welcome to ask for input/thoughts/opinions. It's a contest, definitely, but from my experience it's a contest where everyone is willing to help out their competitors.

As a heads up, I'll be running critique on the monsters myself, starting in a couple days so that people have time to assemble their thoughts.

Finished abilities, just need feats now.

...And feats are done. Wee, that was faster than I expected.

Also, the Fireborn's hit points are 108.

It'll take me a few days to work out the details, but my entry will almost assuredly be a homage to Lucius The Eternal from WH40K. A powerful, unique fiend who lives for the glory of combat, but curses whoever kills it to eventually transform into the fiend and resurrect it (with qualifiers, naturally).

Fun concept. I'm thinking of a Troll/Highlander hybrid. These ancient/mutated trolls roam the world, looking for others of their kind to fight, kill, and devour. Eating the flesh of another is the only way to permanently prevent the troll from regenerating, as the victor consumes the loser it gains strength (HD).

Killing one of these trolls by reducing them to -10 HP will have is slowly regenerate over the course of a week or so, unless the entire body is consumed (flesh, bones, everything). A non-troll that kills one in this fashion will gain trollish traits and possibly a hunger akin to Undead Hunger in Libris Mortis.

Question: would a small group of closely related creatures be allowed as an entry? I think I've seen it done in past contests, but it never hurts to ask.

I did it with the Xsoaetsziq, but you should still check with Djinn.

Alright, so my cannibalistic highlander-troll is in for it's first draft and review. What do you think?

Admiral Squish - I really hope you don't find any good pictures for that thing. Also, don't tell Keld about it, or I wouldn't be surprised to see the next student we find a victim of this thing!

@Cheesy74: love the idea, I can totally see a variation of the Hatespawn being individuals like Jack the Ripper, a veteran confederate soldier founding the KKK, etc... some kind of doppelganger never to be revealed.

Hum... Tome of battle is pretty big in the forums it seems, I'll have to learn about this... (particularly in the "give a class to the picture" thread, half of hte suggestions were for swordsages... )

I'll be posting my creature's draft soon.

If we are allowed to make monsters inspired by common media, I'm so making something based off of the Mohra demon!

Possibly an aberration or an undead... though, then again, undead already have Liches and Death Knights that fit this category....

Basically, as long as you're simply inspired rather than being derivative, that's fine. If you simply transfer the monster to D&D, I'm going to have to say that's not okay. But inspiration from a source is always fine.

Don't worry. It's not going to be a Mohra Demon, in fact it probably won't even be a demon. Now I'm thinking of some sort of deathless whose positive energy is channeled by an item it wears. I'm still debating, though.

Okay, the stat block for the Mourning Spectator is done. It'll be a Deathless Jerren whose forced to remain on the Material Plane to guard the unholy sites of demonic cult activity of the Jerren from Goblinoids. Their regeneration and rejuvenation abilities keep them "alive" unless someone sunders their mystical longbow first.

I'll finish it up tomorrow, I guess.

Also, if you first introduce this thing at level 5, it might quickly become a "just make a new character" monster after a few deaths... wait... what am I thinking... prisons, Stone to Flesh, etc etc etc. any character that can't figure how to trap it without killing it (at least with some thinking help from the rest of the party) deserves it...

Actually, now that I think of it, it doesn't seem like the sort of thing to deal well with swimming oceans or booking passage on a ship. You should probably make it so it usually drowns itself trying to swim the ocean, and then comes back with the Amphibious quality.
Maneuvers: It means known, ability clarified.

Excessive advancement: That's the main purpose behind it reappearing thousands of miles away in a random location. It's meant to be the DM's call how long it takes to return to the party, how many times it was killed before actually reaching them, etc. This keeps control in the DM's hands over when it's CR appropriate to encounter it.

"Just imprison it": Imprisonment should still work. That's always a viable option, since it's extremely difficult to do. However, save-or-dies like flesh to stone, crystallize, etc shouldn't work. I added a clause to Undying Evolution about permanently being disabled.

Travel woes: Maxed its ranks in swim, gave it the Unceasing Pursuit ability to aid with its travel.

Just posted up Nebula the Starmetal Droid, a unique character that I was inspired to make up on the spot by the picture. Also, will be much cheerier than the Arcadian Shade, which was pretty grim but not scary sounding (i.e a flop).

Fluff will be done later, or tomorrow. Hope it's not too messy.

    Damn. Missed that completely.

Hm. I'm somewhat hesitant to open the door to multiple-monster entries, but by all means go ahead. If I deem the creation can stand on the merits of one of the creatures alone (i.e. the concept isn't ruined completely by the others not being present), I may ask you to choose one to submit for the contest and display the entire set it a separate thread.

    Does that sounds fair?

Basically, I can see something like, say, the Three Fates being a single 3-part monster submission, but I'd need to see flavor/concept proof that it's required in the final piece.
