    Default Expanded Dragonblood

Anybody that's read my sig knows I like making dragons.

Well seems it's been requested that I make dragonblooded subraces based upon some of the dragons I've made. To avoid cluttering that thread with this, partially because the first post can't really survive another table being added to it, I'm doing it in a new thread dedicated just to dragonblooded races.

I'm willing to take requests from published dragons, or ones I've made.

The original thread is here: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169209

    Brightsteel Warforged:
On the world of Arthin, once, a race of great mages built false dragons to fight the red wyrms that plagued them. Their civilization was lost when the world burned and cities sank to the sea, but in secluded mountains their soldiers, fueled by the spirits of dragons and holy energies stolen from the Upper Planes, lay in slumber. Artificers found these ancient constructs, and after years of research they began to construct warriors of their own from these dormant beasts. Pulling their bodies apart for scraps and siphoning off the energies that gave them life, they created an order of noble knights whose flesh was untiring steel.

The draconic energy fueling their bodies made these warforged, like the dragons they were crafted from, seem to glow with inner light.

All traits are as Warforged unless otherwise noted:

    • +4 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Wisdom; this replaces a normal warforged ability score modifiers. The draconic energies in their construction imbue brightsteel warforged with greater strength than normal warforged and more powerful personalities.
    • Dragonforged Subtype
    • Bonus Warforged feat; this cannot be used to give you two warforged feats that may only be taken at 1st level. The draconic energies inherent in a brightsteel warforged are difficult to contain in a regular warforged body.
    • Cold Resistance 10; the same magic that imbues brightsteel dragons with their immunity to cold infuses a brightsteel warforged with resistance against it.
    • +2 on saves against breath weapons; built to fight dragons, brightsteel warforged are resistant to one of their primary weapons.
    • DR 2/adamantine; the construction of a brightsteel warforged is tougher, and resilient to blows. If they take the adamantine body feat this DR stacks with that granted by the feat.
    • Favored Class: Paladin. Infused with draconic spirits in their construction, brightsteel warforged naturally veer towards the blessed teachings of Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon.
    • LA: +1.

    Brightsteel Body (Warforged)
Your body has a larger concentration of materials taken from a brightsteel dragon than most. This gives you sturdier armor as well as resistance to non-magical weapons.
Prerequisites: Brightsteel warforged, 1st level only.
Benefits: : Your armor bonus is increased to +5 and your damage reduction becomes 2/adamantine and magic, increasing by 1 every 5th level. You are also immune to Rusting Grasp and other rust effects. However, your base land speed is reduced to 20 feet, and you are considered to be wearing medium armor. You have a +3 maximum Dexterity bonus to AC, a –3 penalty on all skill checks that armor check penalties apply to (Balance, Climb, Escape Artist, Hide, Jump, Move Silently, Sleight of Hand, Swim, and Tumble), and an arcane spell failure chance of 15%.

Forgewright Dwarves:Moradin forged great dragons of living iron, a gift for Bahamut the Platinum. These dragons, forged with spirits of might like those of true dragons but inhabited also by the urge to create and love of community that forges the dwarves into what they are, took to living closely with the dwarves. Their magical energies, though, could not be fully contained, and on occasion a dwarf is born infused with these powers. His flesh is harder than that of a normal dwarf, and the color of fire hardened steel, the texture as well smooth and metallic. These dwarves become spokesmen for their race, for they are born with a silvered tongue, and have greater strength and fortitude than even their kin. Despite this, their true calling is the forge, and it is the one place they feel completely at home and happy.

All traits are as a dwarf unless otherwise noted
    • +2 Strength, +4 Constitution, -2 Dexterity
    • Construct (Living Construct, Dragonforged).
    • Dwarf-blood: Counts as a dwarf for spells, effects, feats, and PrCs that require one to be a dwarf.
    • +1 to attack and damage against Constructs, and they may score critical hits (and sneak attack) on constructs normally. This replaces a dwarf’s bonus to attack and damage against orcs and goblins. Their own mechanical nature makes forgewright dwarves keenly aware of the weaknesses of constructs.
    • Draconic Vigor (Su): 1/day + 1/day per 5 character levels, a forgewright dwarf may enter a state where their draconic energies flow through them. This state gives them a +2 to Strength, and Constitution and DR X/magic where X is their character level. In addition when the ability ends they instantly heal 1 hp/character level. This state lasts 3 + Con modifier rounds and is a free action to initiate or end.
    • +2 natural armor bonus to AC. The metal in their skin makes forgewright dwarves particularly hard to damage.
    • Favored Class: Artificer.
    • LA: +1.

    Sunscale Humans:
Born of the mixed bloodlines of space faring men and the dragons of wildspace, sunscale humans are known for their integrity and nobility throughout spacer communities. Over generations their blood line blended into some of the great crystal sphere spanning empires until it grew dilute. Now occasionally in spacefaring cultures a human is born whose blood harkens back to time when these empires were still strong, one who has inherited the power of dragons.

Sunscale humans are fair skinned and have golden blonde hair and yellow-orange eyes. Due to their lack of need for breath they often find themselves serving as part of scavenging crews or boarding crews on spelljamming vessels.

All traits are as a normal human unless otherwise noted

    • Dragonblood subtype; a sunscale human has the dragonblood subtype due to their draconic heritage.
    • Slow Breather (Ex): A sunscale human only breathes half as much as a regular human. This grants them a +2 to saves versus inhaled poisons, and allows them to hold their breath for twice as long as normal humans.
    • Breathless (Ex): Starting at 8th level a sunscale human no longer needs to breathe gaining immunity to inhaled poisons, and the ability to go any amount of time without breathing.
    • Spacer: A sunscale human is born and raised amidst planets, calling no one world home. They gain a +2 bonus on Knowledge (Space)* checks and it is always a class skill for them.
*Or equivalent skill as there should be some Spelljamming knowledge skill and I forget what the semi-official homebrew has since I dropped half of what they did with skills and feats.
    • No bonus skill points. Unlike other humans a sunscale human does not gain bonus skill points.

    Deep Trench Sea Elves:
Beneath the waves, the light-hearted followers of Deep Sashelas fight against the treacherous sahuagin. Deep beneath even the level where these elves build their cities on the sea bed, in dark trenches that mar the ocean floor, dragons dwell. Every few centuries since before the dawn of civilization they have risen up and with cilia-like claws crushed and killed, eating their way through sea elves and sahuagin alike. In these trenches the sahuagin worship them as heralds of their dark god. Greedy for more such worship, these dragons began to take fair sea elven slaves back into the depths from their feeding runs. Over millennia they have used them to create a servitor race fine to look upon, but spiteful and hateful of spirit.

The depths they dwell in have turned the deep trench sea elves skin a ghostly white like the moon at its height, and their draconic blood has cast markings of blue as dark as midnight across their body creating a zebra-like effect. Their eyes are like inky pools of darkness, letting no light escape.

All traits are as Aquatic Elves (MM Page 103) unless otherwise noted:
    • Dragonblood subtype.
    • They have no bonus on Spot and Search checks, and no ability to sense secret doors.
    • They lose their bonus to saves against enchantment spells and effects.
    • +2 to Intimidate
    • Darkvision 60-ft in addition to their low-light vision; a combination of the greater depth they live at and their draconic heritage give deep trench sea elves the ability to see in the total darkness of the greatest depths.
    • Immunity to the effects of high water pressure.
    • Favored Class: Ranger; this replaces their normal favored class of Fighter.

    Grimcrag Dwarves
Born amidst the raging volcanoes, grimcrag dwarves are the progeny of ancient dragons of fire and earth and rogue dwarves. They’ve grown barbaric, now used by their draconic forebears as soldiers in territorial battles against elementals. Their bodies are filled with elemental fire, and their battle skills tempered against beings of pure stone and flame, but they have fallen to savagery and barbarism. They are hostile, boastful, self-centered and cruel lacking those dwarven virtues that mark a true dwarf fortress.

Grimcrag dwarves have deeply tanned brown skin and brightly colored hair of yellow, red, and orange. Their eyes seem to shine in the light, dancing like flames.

All traits are as dwarves unless otherwise noted:
    • Dragonblood subtype.
    • Speed: 20-ft, however a grimcrag dwarf may move at full speed when carrying a medium load or wearing medium armor; they lose the dwarven ability to move at full speed with a heavy load or in heavy armor.
    • No bonus to craft checks; grimcrag dwarves have fallen into barbarism. While they still forge weapons as fine as a human smith, they have lost the skill of their ancestors.
    • No weapon familiarity; grimcrag dwarves favor great-axes and scythes over traditional dwarven weapons and lack familiarity with those used by dwarves who still cling to the old ways.
    • +4 Dodge bonus to AC when fighting creatures of the elemental type; this replaces the bonus to AC against creatures of the giant type. Grimcrag dwarves were bred by their draconic masters to fight elementals that often challenge them for their territory, and learn special techniques for fighting them from birth onwards.
    • No racial bonus to saving throws versus poison.
    • Fire Resistance 10.
    • +1 to attack and damage against creatures with the Fire subtype. This replaces their bonus to attack and damage against orcs and goblinoids. Grimcrag dwarves aid their draconic overlords in battle against fire elementals and learn special techniques to do so.
    • Favored Class: Barbarian.

    Shadowsoul Illumian:
When the illumians founded their great city of Elirhondas on the plane of shadows they little knew what beasts they were stirring up.

The great wyrms of the shadow plane did not move to strike the illumians directly, but instead worked subtly. They stole children, they disguised themselves as their foes, and over generations they bred a new servitor race. They tolerate Elirhondas, for now, because it is in a neutral zone, where they dare not act openly lest they bring the wrath of other of their own kind down upon their heads, but little do the illumians realize that should they set act outside those regions they might soon find a far greater danger in the shadows than any they have ever faced.

The shadow illumians that the umbra wyrms have forged from long generations, have spread throughout their domains in the plane of shadow. Given as gifts from one dragon to another, until they have become seen as indispensible aids and loyal servants.

Shadowsoul illumians look like regular illumians, although close inspection will show that their skin is a shade darker, their pupils a hair's breadth wider, and their irises tend more towards darker shades.

Shadowsoul Illumian Racial Traits (these are in addition to those of normal illumians unless otherwise indicated; as I can't reprint the entire illumian race):
    • +2 Constitutiona and +2 Charisma; the shadow stuff infuses them with greater power and potency.
    • Dragonblood subtype; a shadowsoul illumian has the blood of dragons flowing through them. They gain the dragonblood subtype.
    • Darkvision: A shadowsoul illumian can see up to 60-ft in non-magical darkness, and up to 30-ft through magical darkness.
    • Beshadowed Sigils: A shadowsoul illumian's sigil does not produce light, but is otherwise identical to those of other illumians.
    • Shadow Sigil (Su): On attaining 3rd level in any class a shadowsoul illumian gains a third power sigil. Unlike the other two this sigil is never visible except under True Seeing and does not combine with the others to make a word. In addition the bonus from each sigil increases by 1 to +3 and is no longer limited by character level but instead by ECL.
    • Shadow Word (Su): While the third sigil doesn't combine with the first two it combines with the primal shadow within the shadowsoul illumian gaining additional powers even as it is twisted.
"Vigor": A shadowsoul illumian with the "Vigor" sigil as their shadow sigil can replace their Dexterity bonus with their Strength bonus for determining their AC; they are still limited by their armor's Max Dex.
"Life": A shadowsoul illumian with the "Life" sigil as their shadow sigil gains fast healing 2 when at less than half health. This ability is lost while in direct sunlight, or the radius of bright light from a daylight or stronger [light] spell.
"Magic": A shadowsoul illumian with the "Magic" sigil as their shadow sigil gains a bonus spell each day of the highest level they can cast, or a bonus use of any 1 mystery they know each day.
"Mind": A shadowsoul illumian with the "Mind" sigil as their shadow sigil gains bonus power points equal to their character level.
"Grace": A shadowsoul illumian with the "Grace" sigil as their shadow sigil may use their Dexterity to determine weapon damage with finessable weapons instead of Strength, and they gain Weapon Finesse as a bonus feat.
"Soul": A shadowsoul illumian with the "Soul" sigil as their shadow sigil may use their Charisma instead of Dexterity bonus to determine their AC; they are still limited by their armor's Max Dex.
    • Shadowborn: A shadowsoul illumian automatically succeeds on any saving throw against a spell or effect of the shadow descriptor.
    • LA: +1; Shadowsoul illumians are stronger than their normal kin gaining +1 LA.

    Shadowscale Drow
Born of an ancient alliance between dragons of darkest night and the Spider Queen, the shadowscale drow are a rarity among their kin. Once much more prosperous, they were slaughtered nearly to a woman in an ancient war with their kin. Now only a few bloodlines exist among the drow houses. Even so they are prized for their superior talents with shadowmagic, and how it is easier to coax them with magic than most of their kin.

Shadowscale drow have the same skin tone as their normal kin, but their eyes are pure inky black, and their hair is a deep midnight blue. They tend to be taller but thinner than their kin.

These racial traits are not in addition to, but completely supercede those of drow.
    • +2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, +2 Charisma.
    • Medium sized
    • Humanoid with the elf and dragonblood subtypes.
    • Darkvision out to 120 feet.
    • Low-Light Vision; shadowscale drow are more at home in the shadows than other drow.
    • +2 racial bonus to Bluff and Intimidate checks.
    • +2 racial bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks. An elf who merely passes within 5 feet of a secret or concealed door is entitled to a Search check to notice it as if she were actively looking for it.
    • Spell resistance equal to 11 + class levels.
    • Immunity to sleep spells and effects, and a +2 racial saving throw bonus against energy draining effects (including the saving throw to prevent negative levels from becoming level loss) and death effects.
    • Spell-Like Abilities: Drow can use the following spell-like abilities three times per day (each functions as the mystery of the same name): Mystic Reflections, Black Candle. They can use the following spell-like abilities once per day (each functions as mystery of the same name): Carpet of Shadow, Voice of Shadow. Caster level equals the drow’s class levels. The shadow essence that flows through their veins warps shadowscale drows' natural magic turning it even darker than before.
    • Weapon Proficiency: A drow is automatically proficient with the hand crossbow, the rapier, and the short sword.
    • Automatic Languages: Common, Elven, Undercommon. Bonus Languages: Abyssal, Aquan, Draconic, Drow Sign Language, Gnome, Goblin. This trait replaces the high elf’s automatic and bonus languages.
    • Light Blindness: Abrupt exposure to bright light (such as sunlight or a daylight spell) blinds drow for 1 round. On subsequent rounds, they are dazzled as long as they remain in the affected area.
    • Favored Class: Shadowcaster.
    • Level adjustment +2

    Dreadborn Orcs
In worlds covered in darkness, the Malison dragons ruled. Some worlds have thrown off the shackles of these dread beings, though many more are still held in their inky grasp. On worlds which these beings have held power they have bred with the lesser races to create elite servants. The evil humanoids are favorites of theres for such purposes, and their blood flows strongest through the bestial orcs.

Standing as lords amongst their kindred, those orcs which through some lucky fluke show signs of their heritage are smarter and healthier than their kin, gifted with arcane powers that the others can barely understand. They are slightly larger than their kin, and their skin rough, almost scaly, and black as pitch. The strongest undergo a metamorphosis which grant them draconic wings which allow them to fly over their lesser kindred.

    • +4 Strength, +2 Constitution, +2 Charisma
    • Humanoid (Orc, Dragonblood)
    • Medium-size
    • Speed 30-ft.
    • 2 racial hit dice (d8) giving them +1 BAB, +3 to Reflex, 10 skill ranks (bluff, concentration, intimidate, listen, spellcraft, and spot are class skills), and 1 feat.
    • Darkvision 60-ft; unlike normal darkvision this functions even in magical darkness.
    • +2 Natural Armor.
    • A dreadborn orc with at least 6 Hit Dice grows wings capable of flight (30-ft, average maneuverability)
    • Arcane Blood: A dreadborn orc casts spells as a 2nd level sorcerer, even if they have no sorcerer levels, or casts spells as a sorcerer 2 levels higher than their actual level.
    • Dark Speech as a bonus feat when they reach 4th level.
    • Favored Class: Sorcerer.
    • LA: +1.

    Merismeer
On Mount Celestia, where mortal and angelic bloodlines mix, one can find an interesting variety of planetouched. Descended from planar dragons, the merismeer are a breed of proud warriors, ready always to defend the right and justice against the forces of the lower planes, and evil in more mundane forms.

Merismeer stand six feet tall on average, with bright red eyes, and hair of flawless ivory. Their skin takes on the golden hue of their draconic ancestor’s scales, interlaced with patterns of snowy white.

    Merismeer racial traits:
    • +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma
    • Outsider (Native, Dragonblood)
    • Fire and Electricity Resistance 10.
    • Continuous Protection from Evil active on themselves (if dispelled it is only suppressed instead for 1d4 rounds). Caster Level = Character Level.
    • Evil-bane Strike (Su): merismeer add their charisma modifier as a bonus to weapon damage against creatures with the evil subtype, undead, evil aligned outsiders, and any being with an Aura of Evil like an evil cleric, paladin, or incarnate. In addition any natural weapon of a merismeer and any weapon it wields counts as good aligned for the purpose of overcoming DR.
    • DR 2/evil.
    • +2 on Diplomacy and Ride checks.
    • Favored Class: Paladin.
    • LA: +1.

On dreadborn orcs it might be better to give them racial hit dice of 2 to ensure that the LA cannot be bought off, because its RHD and not LA, and then give +1 LA on top of that. Maybe toss in a little something extra if it leaves a bitter taste.

    Good idea; thanks.

Since they live on the Prime and the Lower Planes I can see that, though I doubt they'd actually be outsiders even ones with the native subtype. To tell the truth I wanted to make something non-human first with them. Really I can see them having (at least) 3 seperate dragonblooded lineages, orcs, humans, and hobgoblins.

    Il’tyrith
Found amid hobgoblins il’tyrith are considered a sign of a dark blessing upon their lineage. Blessed by the blood of hellish dragons, they surpass common hobgoblins in their skill upon the battlefield serving as commanders in their armies. Descended from mercenaries and conscripts in the Blood War, il’tyrith are ambitious, vicious, and willing to go to any length for triumph. Always proper, they twist the codes of honor of the hobgoblin societies around their fingers pressing the already Lawful Evil society into new extremes of depravity in their ascent to power.
Il’tyriths’ eyes are a strange, hellish green, and their flesh a somber blue. They are prone to tattooing their flesh, or a series of ritual scars and piercings.

    Il’tyrith racial traits:
    • +4 Strength, +2 Dexterity, +4 Constitution, +2 Charisma
    • Outsider (Native, Dragonblood)
    • Medium size
    • Speed 30-ft
    • Fire Resistance 10.
    • Immunity to Fear
    • +3 natural armor.
    • Aura of Prowess (Su): Allies within 60-ft gain a +1 morale bonus to attack rolls, melee damage rolls, saving throws, and their Spell Resistance. This does not apply to il’tyrith producing the aura.
    • Draconic Aura: An il’tyrith produces a draconic aura granting a bonus equal to 1/3rd its character level (minimum +1) chosen, at 1st level, from those available to a dragon totem shaman.
    • Frightful Blow (Ex): Any creature with HD equal to or less than an il’tyrith’s character level that they strike in melee must make a Will save (DC 10 +1/2 the il’tyrith’s character level + the il’tyrith’s Charisma) or be shaken for 3d6 rounds. On a successful save they are immune to that il’tyrith’s frightful blow for 1 hour.
    • +4 racial bonus to Diplomacy and Intimidate checks.
    • Favored Class: Paladin of Tyranny.
    • LA: +2.

    Skalviri
Descended from warriors of an ancient war against beings from beyond reality, the skalviri are throwbacks to a fabled race of dragons that sired them with human companion. These dragons, whose songs are said to have inspired the first bards if their sons and daughters were not the first bards themselves, vanished long ago, the battle over.

The skalviri have inherited their ancestor’s courage, and a fraction of that song that inhabits their soul, gaining power and fury from it. In battle a skalviri fights like a wild beast, and in friendship they show adamantine loyalty.

Skalviri have red-gold hair, and even their skin hints of red-gold. Their eyes are bright and clear, coming in blues and greens like those of the humans that dominate their bloodline.

    Skalviri Racial Traits:
    • +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, +2 Charisma
    • Humanoid (Human, Dragonblood)
    • Medium-sized
    • Speed 30-ft.
    • Bonus feat; a skalviri gains one bonus feat of their choice.
    • Master Performer: Perform is always a class skill for a skalviri and they gain 1 bonus rank in it each level, 4 at 1st level. In addition they are always able to take 10 on Perform checks even when threatened.
    • Inspire Courage: 1/day a skalviri can inspire courage as a bard of their character level. This does not count as the bardic music ability, although it does qualify for prerequisites that require Inspire Courage and not bardic music. If they have Inspire Courage from another source (bard levels for example) the uses and effectiveness are tracked separately.
    • Sonic Resistance 10.
    • Immunity to fear.
    • Roar (Ex): 1/day a skalviri can unleash a powerful draconic roar. This functions as a demoralize attempt on all enemies within 30-ft of the skalviri except that the enemies are shaken for Charisma bonus rounds (minimum 1 round). If the skalviri has the Imperious Command feat then targets cower for 1 round and are then shaken for Charisma bonus rounds (minimum 1 round) instead.
    • Favored Class: Bard.
    • LA: +1.

Goblinoid is a humanoid-only subtype. Similar to how Aasimar and Tieflings don't have the Human subtype.

Any specific dragons? Also any specific (PC) races? I'm tempted to do a clockwork dragon planetouched race. Till I remember that just as many clockwork dragons are native to the Prime as Mechanus... I want to mix them with modrons but that just doesn't make sense in the orderly world of modrons.

I seem to have left that out on the two descended from umbra dragons, sorry about that.

On a random note I'm always tempted to make drows albino.

LOTRfan answered perfectly. I started to give it the goblinoid subtype then realized that it didn't belong. That said I'd say it would be a perfectly acceptable house rule to give it to them, just like I do for tieflings and aasimar.

How about an Ironrune Dragonborn since both are born to fight against the forces of Tiamat.

Also I'm thinking perhaps a Clockwork Gnome, at some point the naturally curious Gnomes befriended a Clockwork Dragon and were trying to figure out how they work without actually taking it apart, eventually with long hours of close proximity, the magic that binds the Clockwork Dragons affected the clan of Gnomes.

Perhaps, since they spend so much time with Dwarves anyway, a clan of Loadstone Dwarves?

And lastly, mainly since they're the most likely to spend any amount of time near a dragon's hoard and not be attacked on sight, Coinskin Kobolds.

Keep in mind that Modrons are constructs in 3.5e, as well.

Oddly enough, those already exist. The Szarkai are a subrace of mutated Drow that look similar enough as High Elves to pass as them.
