Is there a shapeshift-focused base class?
I like the alternate druid wildshape from the PHB2, where you can transform as much as you want but into only a few pre-set forms. I'd like to play a character focused on this, but without the whole 'druid spellcaster' attached to it. Are there any official or homebrew classes where shapeshifting (at-will or often) is their whole focus?

Wildshape ranger, then trade out the wildshape as a shapeshift variant druid.

Re: Is there a shapeshift-focused base class?
I think it was Realms of Chaos that 'brewed up The Proteus, or something like that. Let me try and find it.
EDIT: There we go. I knew it was either Proteus or Protean. It was the latter.
Absolutely no spellcasting, ALL about shapeshifting, and it's probably Tier 1 or as close as you can get without spells. That said, it's as easy if not easier to limit yourself to less powerful forms in a lower Tier game. It looks like a blast to play.Last edited by Ziegander; 2011-04-12 at 11:55 AM.

You can also try the psychic warrior from the Expanded Psionics Handbook. They get interesting powers (spells) that give them bite attacks, claw attacks, natural armor improved size, levitation, nasty slimy tentacles, etc etc etc.
I've actually run that kind of character before. It takes a little time to get rolling, but once you've gotten your buffs up you're a powerhouse.Last edited by Thomar_of_Uointer; 2011-04-12 at 12:35 PM.
I make games.
"...I worry that modern gaming is gradually shrinking the wide spectrum of gameplay mechanics into a single narrow red bar with "KILL" written on it sideways. Exploration, navigation, puzzles, platforming, all gradually shrinking away until only one thing remains, being taken by the hand from room to room, moving on only when nothing remains alive in each one." - Yhatzee Crosshaw

To push my own work:
The Blacklight Warper is based on the Prototype video game (if you've heard of it) and is based on fast-pased shapeshifting for various functionality in melee.

Re: Is there a shapeshift-focused base class?
Boneshifter for undead.
Still, only really a tank class since it gets no bonus feats and little else. Its ENTIRE shtick is the shifting, which is fun. (And in in Gestalt combined with a charisma heavy class it can rock)My first foray into homebrew: The Circuit Mage
