    Thank you.

If anyone likes this thread, please feel free to link it in your own signatures for ease of access. The single sticky thread with links to everything isn't all totally useful. But if more people besides myself had it linked with every post... Then maybe everyone will be table pros someday :3

    You may notice the last of the tables failing in the collection of presets. If I recall, I could not find the source of the break. It is likely simply a problem with so much code in one post o-o;
But pay it no mind, it's still perfectly copyable.

Here's a 10-level sample prestige class that advances spellcasting, that I built using the forum's table function, and using data from the thread creator's broken tables.
As a rough guide, once you click on the button, make the following changes:
Rows: The number of rows is equal to the number of levels in the class, plus one. Bold each cell in the first line.
Columns: "Level" and "Base Attack Bonus" together require two columns. The three saves (Fort, Reflexes & Will) boost the required columns to five, "Special" adds another column, and the "Spells" column increases the total columns to seven.
Width: Change it to 715 if within spoilers
Table Style: Change it from "No Border' to "Full Grid".
    Alignment: Select Center

Let me offer a quick guide on how to translate your excel table to this forum, in x easy steps. (Putting this in code brackets to prevent any of the commands from activating, god that looks ugly.)

    Code:
In your excel sheet, below your already made table, have 2 cells with the following text (minus the "'s):

    "[td]"
    "[/td]"

Below that start with 1 colum of "[tr]". have as many rows of that as you have rows in your table.

The next X colums are emtpy (the amount of colums in your table).

Then have a colum of "[/tr]".

In the first colum, first row (after the first [tr]) add the following code:

    =CONCATENATE(A1,A3,C1)

Where A1 is the cell with "[td]" in it, A3 is the top left corner of the table you wish to add to this forum, and C1 is the cell with "[/td]" in it.

Now change that line to the following:

    =CONCATENATE($A$1,A3,$C$1)

This means that when you copy that line to other cells, the A3 cell will shift, while the A1 and C1 stay the same (you want to add [td] [/td] to each, not the blank cells to the left or right of it).

Now drag/copy the code to all the empty cells between the [tr] and [/tr] signs.

If you copy all the info from the top left most [tr] to the bottom right most [/tr] you'll have most of your table there, so now lets set up the rest of our table.

What you need to add is the table header and closer (which Southern Cross describes above quite well, but...). But we can have the forum generate it for us.

Click the "table" button when writing your post (above the text box, bottom left button), enter your width, style and allignment (ignore the row/collow part).

In the code that appears, delete everything but the table commands, so from the first [tr] to the last [/tr]

Inbetween the open and close table commands, copy past your encoded excel data.

Hit preview, enjoy your table (maybe add some bold for the headers?) and post your table.

ps: where I got my information (it has pictures! But is slightly confusing sometimes): Source (start at step 6-ish and end roughly around 14).

Erm, check the dates; the thread was posted years ago, before the change happened. It's a thread that was used often, so people are now discussing updating it.

I'm wondering why the hell the tables were made so complicated in the "upgrade". The old method was easier to use and looked a lot better than the new version, so it's not so much an upgrade to tables than it is a major downgrade.

Sorry, my confusion came from reading the thread on a phone, and the new tables not showing properly. I thought people were designing tables with the old system, and was very confused.

I kind of agree. The forum upgrade was otherwise REALLY nice; was maintaining the old forum code impossible, somehow? Because I'm not sure what the benefit is.

I liked how you could at least read the damn tables once you shoved them in here before. Now? they are a total mess.

From now on im just going to use screencaptures of the pifro standard table. its quite pretty. (paladin linked to quicker show my point, not everyone has seen the glory of Pifro yet)

Yea, that IS pretty. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to make the custom tables do what I want in the Special Abilities column, and manipulating custom spell-per-day tracks can be incredibly stressful, if not impossible.

I did, but I can't figure out how to keep an ability from repeating every formula, or to set an ability to advance at an irregular pace (I can't get an ability to start at 1st level, advance at 5th, then 10th, because there's a different amount of levels between those points, etc.)

{fN/5+1} will get you something that progresses at the same rate as default Smite Evil.

Ive wasted probably about a month total (ive used it for 2 years) just poking at the tool to figure out every aspect. Level 0 itterates the ability from 0th level, but will begin you with the ability at lvl 1, for instance.

I'm really busy with other forums and some fairly serious irl issues as of late and don't really have the free time to sit down and work with the new tables.

However. In the mean time I recommend two things) Keep experimenting, and sharing your table designs. When I get time I can pick them apart to understand them quicker so I can catalog everything into the respective presets. A Tutorial would come later.

I also definitely recommend what making your tables on an external service as Toapat suggested, then screen shot.

Readers can't interact with your table anyway, and it's just an easy extra step on your part. You could also do things to edit your image itself to personalize it, who knows.

In the mean time, I don't have much time to dedicate to this forum right now. I'll come back to it. In maybe two or three months I'll be able to sit down and upgrade this topic. If someone else decides to make a replacement for this topic while I'll be disappointed, I'd definitely understand.

Yes. As we announced, the overall upgrade to the forum rendered the old table code inoperable, since it was a custom code. The new software came with its own (incompatible) table function, which Rawhide has now customized.

Oh, Seerow, how did you manage to make those tables? You can pm me with the data if you want.

Like Toapat said, you can just quote the post to get the full table code. Points of note for helping to build your own tables:

    • All of them use [table="class: head alt1 alt2 thick_outer_border_grid"], which gets most of the fancy styling.
    • Top Row then uses th tags instead of td, this combined with the "head" class makes for the top row being dark brown with the bold white text.
    • Note that th can be used outside of the top row if you want an extra header cell or row in your table.
    • To make a cell span multiple columns you simply use [td="colspan:X] where X is the number of cols you are spanning. (This was used in both of the spellcasting tables to help things line up better)
