    Default Diplomacy Central III

Welcome to the master thread for all diplomacy games. Here, we'll keep a directory of players and games. This thread will be a place for finding players and asking advice and rules questions and everything in between.

    Diplomacy
Diplomacy, by Avalon Hill, is a board game of betrayal and backstabbing and not the slightest bit of luck. It's all skill. If you're interested in learning the rules, you can find them here.

There are many variants, but the most common version, standard diplomacy, is played on the map below:

    A Bit of Meaningless History
It's been a while since we've had a master thread and this will actually be, to my knowledge, the third of its type (hence the III in the title). But the first two have been deleted because they were very old. To my knowledge, diplomacy has been played on these boards, on and off, since 2007. It's quite possible it's been going on longer though - I simply wasn't involved. I say this because every year or so, someone introduces "the first ever diplomacy game on the Giantitp boards" and it's deeply hilarious.

    Player Directory

EDIT: This isn't terribly up to date at the moment. I'll fix it sometime. Maybe. No promises.

Although there have been an extremely large number of players over the years, I'm going to limit this list to those who have been seen on the boards since the posting of this thread and who have not quit games in the past (except in cases where they notified the GM and had a good reason).

If you'd like to be added to this list, post below and say hi.

I'm already on the list, but I'm saying hi nevertheless.

    EDIT:

Just noting, but I think the Diplomacy community should move to the Structured Games subforum. We've already got a thriving Werewolf/Mafia group there, but I'm sure more games would fit. And Diplomacy is clearly a structured game.

That way this thread, as the Diplomacy Central, could be stickyed in case there's enough activity, and the games wouldn't be lost in the sea of RP threads.

    Hmm.

I'd be interested, and I'm generally active, but my current circumstances, namely being confined to a lonely cabin in the middle of nowhere in central Finland with very weak internet access, mean that it might be possible for me to miss my moves under some circumstances.

Well, you could either repost the thread there or ask the mods, probably Alarra and/or Zeb the Troll who are the Structured mods, to move this one there. I'm not really versed on how this stuff works on the forum so I don't know which would be preferrable.

Disclaimer: I'm about to talk about a variant. I have no plans for running such a game. This is just a discussion starter

So I don't know how many of you have played youngstown before. It's a great variant with a crucial flaw: it has several trivial stalemate lines that separate Asia and Europe and there are enough small regions in Asia that crossing these lines takes a long time. As a result, it is very difficult for an Asian power to win. Of course, the one game we've finished on these boards had Japan win, but still, it took 25 years.

There is a variant rule called Diplowinn which is built to reduce the impact of stalemate lines. Basically, at winter 04', powers may have 1 fewer unit than they have supply centers at maximum. At winter '05, they may have 2 fewer units than supply centers, and so on. Now, because of the distances in youngstown, it probably makes sense to skip a year, but the idea is solid.

Anyone who's played youngstown, what do you think?

PS: I sort of doubt many people will see this who have played Youngstown, so this may not get any responses, but I've been thinking about it so I'm posting.

I'd be interested in this. I've only played once before and that game fell apart due to players dropping, but Diplomacy looks like it's a lot of fun if played more actively.

I think I'd prefer a standard ruleset game with something like 48-72 hour turns (because people missing turns is no fun, even for those who don't), but I can join pretty much anything.

If you want to go back for some nostalgia, here's the first Diplomacy Central thread.

Ah, Backstab. It's too bad all the old games got purged. That would have been fun to go back and read. Plus, it would be an excellent primer for new players.

Hard fought and rather emotional, I (Turkey) managed to hold off the blue and green horde longer than I had any right to, while keeping Austria and Russia alive with one unit each. At one point Russia's army was holding Vienna while Austria's was in Moscow. The thing I remember most, though, was how I used every trick in the book: whining, sucking-up, praising, insulting, threatening, promising, and encouraging.

Unfortunately I had antagonized Italy just a tad too much, and so he decided to allow England the win as long as I got eliminated. The beauty is that England was going to go for it, but my defense was so consistent that, in the end, he stabbed Italy for the win and I survived. Even now I have to chuckle.

Heh. I remember, in one game as Italy, where I was at one point directly controlling Germany (he'd told the GM that whatever moves I sent would be the ones he used), telling Austria, Russia and Turkey what to move to keep a defense against a large German-English alliance and fighting a desperate war with England over control of Gibraltar while keeping Germany and the Eastern Bloc unknowing of the fact that I was manipulating them to keep the deadlock so I'd have more time to kill England.

How would this work for Youngstown. I think the victor would always be the last one with an army. In my little experience with Youngstown, I would say it isn't the stalemate lines that kill Asia, but the spacing. The supply centers are too far apart. This really slows the Asia players down in accumulating SC, and gives them the disadvantage.

We actually finished a game (with Japan winning) and the thing is, it's two-fold. The supply centers *in asia* aren't really too far apart, but the asian ones are seperated by like 4 distance from any european ones. And there's about 6 stalemate lines each in the north and south seperating Asia and Europe that require about 4 units to set up.

But by Fall '08, if you had 15 units, here you'd have 12, so it wouldn't be crippling, it would just mean no tiny power with 5 supply centers can block you and any major power is probably too busy.

That's the theory anyway. The practice is obviously totally up in the air.

Honestly, I don't know how I got here. But that's how we all start, isn't it? No?

Anyway, I'd love to play in a game of diplomacy, as long as none of you mind that I have absolutely no experience with the game other than one and a half days of internet research.

Otherwise: just how high-commitment is Diplomacy? I can send and answer a few PMs a day, etc, but if there's much more than that, I may have to wait until a few PBPs I'm in finish up.
