sound tracks of madness
EDIT: i've taken sound tracks from the post at put them at the top, in the order i like. thanks for any that contributed!
if you follow my log, please watch out. some spoilers!
so, in a few sessions my players will delve into a sort of creepy altered reality/ horror/ "what the hell?"/ "oh god please no!" kind of dungeon. (for those who know Eberron, it's in the Mournland. but as an added twist, the place is inhibited by echoes of a former/ ally/ villain/ not sure what. but this villain tried to be evryone, till she lost who she was. her mind fragmented, lost, shifting personalities. various moods, from extatic to depresed to silent and more.
so i want music! to slowly unhinge the players, create the right mood, add to the atmospehre. music of madnes, insanity (not the murderous kill everyone kind), and so on.
so far i've thought of using music from Alice McGee game.
any more ideas? please help make this something to remember!
Lustmord, Lustmord, Lustmord! (1,9, 11, 13
the start of Mournland
Entering the Mournland
another Mournland
atmospheric creepy
battle to enter the mines- worm/ retriever
battle music
the mines themselves
Traveler mid Eston
loved this! a singing that would just sound... perfect!
corridor of moans, and then great transition at about 2:00 min
The Vortex room
Dooo Dahhh
Final battle
fast paced, Latin nearly 7 min
another, about 14 min
those it so far, but more would be welcomed!

Re: sound tracks of madness
This little piece worked fairly well for initial entry into Mourneland to set the initial tone of the land.
Alternately for a bit of looming Warforge Terror this worked much better than I expected.
Finally on a more...happy vein of trapped little girls may I suggest Yangchen- it's light and care-free until it remains on loop and the PC's slowly realize they can't get out and what's being laughed at.

Re: sound tracks of madness
A few suggestions that might come from a slightly different angle, entertaining as most of the above is.
They aren't on youtube, but try the last two tracks here;
National Trust: The Album
See also Chris Watson's Weather Report, particularly
Vatnajokull
Another mildly obscure one, from a concept album themed on Lovecraft's A Shadow Over Innsmouth
We Shall Dive Down Through Black Abysses
Less obscure, Brian Eno has some wonderful stuff (and I have a criminally small amount of it).
Lizard Point / The Lost Day

This thread has a lot of good options (unfortunately wilknair hasn't updated the OP in a while so you'll have to read through everyone's posts).

Re: sound tracks of madness
Probably not what you had in mind, but I always found this kinda creepy...

Friendlyness coming from nowhere in the middle of an "everything wants to kill you" setting is eerie...

Re: sound tracks of madness
I dont have a specific link to give you, but ive always been fond of less music, than faint sound effects in the background. Same thing for subtle images in video. For example, to show the descent into madness you pass down hallways filled with fairly cheerful paintings. But there is always something subtly wrong with them. The teeth on that smiling child are a bit sharper than they should be. (no exaggerated fangs, just a bit pointy) ominous stains here and there, things like that. And as you move deeper into wherever you are going the paintings slowly grow more and more disturbing and twisted. Obviously works better in a movie setting as you arent basically forcing them to notice the creepy paintings which ruins the effect somewhat, (though it could probably still work if done right)
Similar thing with sound effects. Faint sounds of children laughing and playing, with small hints of something going wrong, like some light yelling, or upset sounds. Then as you go deeper the giggling takes on a malicious edge, some faint screaming starts to be heard, until you have the background noise move from children playing in a field to children running for their lives from something terrible. Keep it quiet, faint, and intermittent. Just enough so they dont have to talk over it, but its in the back of their minds. A little rush of sound as they enter a new part of the dungeon to let them know things may have just gotten worse."Interdum feror cupidine partium magnarum Europae vincendarum"
Translation: "Sometimes I get this urge to conquer large parts of Europe."
"If you don't get those cameras out of my face, I'm gonna go 8.6 on the Richter scale with gastric emissions that'll clear this room."

Re: sound tracks of madness
Shadow of the Sun
searched for Lustmord, and LOVED it! thanks, this is good stuff!
LansXero
Neverhood has sequels?!?! oh my! oh deary my! must get, now!
the song may fit, though not sure. i'll need to think about it.[/SPOILER]
Traab
i already try to to incorporate slightly disturbing effects, but this time the "wrongness" is supposed to be more pronounced, more "in your face", as there is a sort of loss-of-control in the adventure, in more ways than one. the music is to add to the atmosphere, not create it. looking for non-wordy music mostly, so as not to distract the players.
thanks people!Last edited by Kol Korran; 2011-09-29 at 05:35 PM.

Re: sound tracks of madness
Apocalyptica might be interesting to you. Take a look at "Inquisition Symphony" and maybe "Fight Fire With Fire" for example.
Also the Hell music themes from the Diablo games.
Actually horror game music is a good place to look. Maybe from Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.Last edited by Tusalu; 2011-10-04 at 07:27 AM.

Re: sound tracks of madness
I'll post more later when I got the time, but I imagine this could be fairly good when you're closing in on the end battle/near some big plot twist/whatever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_QpA-11feI (Avantasia - Twisted Mind)
I'd also suggest looking at Midnight Syndicate some of their darker/halloween themed music could work?

Re: sound tracks of madness
The 2001 soundtrack is what I use for the scary emptiness of the Astral Plane and associated infinite voids of mind-bending otherness.
You can easily pick up the mp3s of the album.
