I've seem some lightning experiments and people are regularly standing much closer then it would seem advisable to outsiders. Not completely sure if this is color enhanced, but overall, it doesn't look that unusual.

Friend made one and took a long exposure shot, looked kind of like that.
You can use specific metals (or chemical treating) on the torus to change the arc color, apparently. Don't know which ones result in which, but it should work.

I once had a player like this. The group encounters a pit that is not actually in their way, and one player decided to try to jump it.
His character was also a secretly evil halfling rogue, who would sneak into rooms to scout and tell the others things are clear after he cleared the room of all loot. I actually hoped he would die when he jumped into the hole, but he survived with negative HP.

Rangers get a bonus d6 of damage point of damage per level against creatures of the Giant class. According to the entry, however, Giant class creatures include "Bugbears, ettins, giants, gnolls, goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, ogres, ogre magi, orcs, and trolls"
