GITP Community Monster Class Competition II: The Thing That Should Not Be

    Voting Thread

    In madness you dwell...
––James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett

You will vote for two things on this thread, the monster class from last month's competion that you think is the best, and a theme for the next contest. The deadline for this voting thread will (tentatively) be the end of this month.

    Rules

    1) First, you will vote for one monster class entry that you think is the best.

    Contest Entries
    Ethergaunt by TheGeckoKing
    Gilim-á-úr-šár by Owrtho
    Kulumar by Soft Serve

If you are unsure how to judge a monster class, following these guidelines:
Originality - The monster class should be unique. It should stand out from the rest, as a class.
Playability - The monster should allow for fluid, engaging, amusing and uninterrupted play at the table.
Balance - The monster should be balanced enough that it's not going to hold the group back or dominate everything without even trying, both overall and at a given stage in its development.
Elegance - The page which details the monster for the player should look good and be easy to understand.
Flavor - Last but certainly not least, we want to preserve the flavor and the atmosphere of the monster the monster class is based off of.

Feel free to explain your vote, even using the guidelines as an explanation if you want. You can vote for your own monster class creation if you truly feel that it is the best entry. In the case of a tie, I will vote on the disputed themes.

    2) Second, you will vote for the theme of the upcoming contest. I am not offering any suggestions for a theme this month; I want to see what you guys can collaborate on. I suggest offering many ideas for a theme when you post, in order to get the ball rolling. that way, others can tell you which ideas they like from your list, and add to it.

Whichever theme has the most votes by the end of the month will be used for next month's contest. In the case of a tie, I will vote on the disputed themes.

    Okay, potential categories.

Halloween Monsters: Aberrations, outsiders, monstrous humanoids, elementals, anything that goes bump in the night. Plus, since it's going to be October, it seems fitting.

The Fallen/That Which Was Once Beautiful: Something that has been altered in some way, and been turned into something horrifying.

That which lurks below: Bugs, spiders, scorpions, snakes, turtles, That Damn Crab, Cthulhu, anything that can be said to "Lurk below" and I'm including giant stuff too. Shelob? Arachanox? Titanoboas? All fair game.

Death From above: Pretty much anything with a fly speed, or anything that can be reasoned as coming from above.

As you can probably tell, these are meant to be vague, and encompass a lot of different concepts. As for monster classes....

Gilim-á-úr-šár: I personally like this one best. It's got problems, but there's a lot of cool stuff there, and I like the concept the best. Also, voting for my own class just feels dirty.

    Originality
The thing succeeds at this. 4/5
Playability There is a thing or two that could cause trouble at a table, and may end up causing problems. 3.5/5
Balance: I'd say 3/5. there are a few things I see that may end up causing problems.
Elegance: There are a few errors in areas that hurt readability, but overall is rather good. 4.5/5
Flavor:It kept to what it was going for very well. 5/5

I think I'll vote for the Kulumar. I like the flavour and find the execution matches it fairly well. Also my preference for shorter monster classes and rogues over wizards may have had something to do with it. That said, the Ethergaunt seemed fairly well done as well.

Glad you like it. Any chance you could let me know what problems you thought it had? When I'd finished with it I hadn't thought anything looked too off, though I'll admit I realized after the cut-off I should have mentioned some grow larger than others in the fluff, and that I should have given it the mostly flavour ability to detect aberrant energies nearby (most likely in the form of energy from the far realms).

As a side note, Shadow Rend has a typo, in the part talking about people retrieving their shadow.

Right, theme. Knew I was forgetting something. Let's see, I'll vote for Horrors and Spooks, which is pretty much a fancy way to say Halloween themed.

Firstly, my vote goes to the Gilim-á-úr-šár. An excellent monster class and monster in general, even if i'm not quite sure on how to pronounce the name.
Secondly, I second/third? the idea for Halloween monsters. "Something that's scary" sounds like something I can do.
