    Default Looking for ship models

Aright, long story short, I need old school naval ship models. Looking for sailing ships, but not remarkably picky on the era. However, they need to be small enough to work decently on a standard hex battlemat.

    Any suggestions?

This got brought up in the extremely shortlived Dreadfleet thread over on the Other Games section of the forum- 1200 scale models (that is, HMS Victory being about 10 cm long).

    These were the relevant posts:

if you're looking for more fantastic ships as well, Ebay and similar sites probably have a few Man O' War models floating around

Spartan Games has 1/600 scale fantasy models, and 1/1200 scale steampunk-type models. However the fantasy models wouldn't be too out of place, if the smaller ones are picked.

Uncharted Seas is their fantasy sea setting, Dystopian Wars is the steampunk one:

In my 50 Fathoms game (Savage Worlds fantasy Age of Sail-type RPG) I used the little plasticard ships from WizKids' Pirates of the Spanish Main game. $20 gets you quite a few ships (frigates, galleons, sloops, etc) and the expansions even added Chinese junks and other ships that don't normally appear in minis games.

Another cheaper idea is Pirates of The Spanish Main by Wizkids.

I think they are all out of print, but my local gaming store still has a bunch of the packs. Each pack is like $10 from what I remember and has about 5 cardboard punch out ships.

Update! (reopened with permission from Glyphstone)

So, I got into Pirates of the Spanish main...and I learned a few things.

First, and most importantly, go to your local Five Below before online resellers. They sell em new for $1 a pack. They frequently have LOTS in stock. Additionally, the current packs they're selling have an insert for sending in for a free limited edition glow in the dark ship.

Given that each pack has two ships, that's only 50 cents a model...not too shabby at all.

My favorites thus far are the Norse ships, as the mast/oars design is really fantastic...though I admit I've got fat fingers, and have busted a coupla ships in building, I've now got a massive fleet of like fifty ships of various kinds, and one o' my players has gotten into collecting them even more than I have. Definitely the way to go for this era of ship models.

I was going to suggest the Pirates ships, that's what I use. However, WizKids stopped making them, and I think the rights were bought up. Despite this, there is a company reselling them in larger packs through Target. 20 packs for $10 gets you quite a few ships. Problem is you can't pick which expansions you get, and they seem to be from just one or two expansions…

Yeah, the red-pack expansion seems to be the popular one. That said, a nice spread of those is still quite worthwhile.
