Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
Soon, my players will know the horror that is the Pathfinder Ogre. However, two of them recently let it slip that what really scares them is sounds. To get them in the mood for cannibal, inbred, monstrous ogrekin, I want some appropriately creepy music. I'm basically looking for the bluegrass equivalent of Tom Waits. This Devil's Workday (warning: profanity) might be another reference, though more bluegrass-y than New Orleans.
Any ideas?

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
+1 this
You will not find a better piece of music to set the scene for creepy hillbillies. Especially if you watch the movie first.

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
I second Dueling Banjos, but also know that, if your playing that little game in particular, than there will be more than just Hillbilly ogres (and kin). There will be undead, and plenty of it. As such, something like this could hammer in that there are bad, bad things ahead. Ambience tracks are nice, to, and if you must fall back on Banjo music, Deliverance and such are your best bet.

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
You could try Those Poor Bastards, they really have the evil country folks vibe nailed down. But it's with lyrics, so it's probably less atmospheric.

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
First, let me congratulate you on your sense of music.
Second, I couldn't found the songs I was looking for, but the Hackensaw Boys might be something.
Blue Run
Other songs from them, which I couldn't find non-live versions of, but are worth mentioning; Cannon Ball/ Whiskey, Momma/ (or when 1 of the pc's bites the dust: Box of Pine).
Or maybe some 16 Horsepower? Straw Foot is pretty great / Clogger is also something worth a listen. Other songs: Black Soul Choir / Haw.
Personal note: 16 Horsepower was the first concert I've ever went to.
Maybe some Drive-By Truckers?Last edited by some guy; 2012-02-25 at 09:18 PM.
Demiliches. Why'd it have to be demiliches?

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
Your players have probably heard it, but the Left 4 Dead 2 theme probably belongs here.
Also, I guess there's a genre devoted to this sort of thing...Last edited by Science Officer; 2012-02-25 at 09:53 PM.

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
I like this one, although it's probably more thematically fit for inbreed swamprats instead of inbreed hillbillies.

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
Well, one of my players is now in the house, so I don't want to tip them off by playing all of this, but from what I've heard, everything is great :D

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
I quite like Black River Killer by Blitzen Trapper. It's not exactly "Hillbilly," but it has that wonderful twang. Satin in a Coffin might be a good alternate Modest Mouse song to go with.
Dawning: The Age of Psionics
A work in progress that is slowly being transfered from my head to the internet.

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
I'll second 16 Horsepower. You've got the dark banjo music, and his singing is really creepy too. Hutterite Mile, Alone & Forsaken, Wayfaring Stranger, Horse Head Fiddle... they did some very haunting stuff.
The second to last time I saw him in concert, his drummer was using a circular saw blade instead of a cymbal. Drumsticks were broken, blood was drawn. And the police came in and interrupted the show. Y'know. The usual sort of thing.

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
The Dead Brothers would be great for this, but they are rather obscure.
The Drunkard's Dream (the album version would be better, if you can find it.)
Bela Lugosi's Dead (heh)
I couldn't find on YouTube Ramblin' Man (for more banjo), and Farmer Boy (for more stomp).
Reverend Glasseye are highly recommended.
3 ton chain (would also benefit from the album version)
Seventeen Lashes
16 Horsepower have done some interesting covers, too.
Wayfaring Stranger
Sinnerman
William Elliott Whitmore isn't creepy, but this is spooky.
Diggin' my grave
As for Murder by Death, I find You don't miss twice (when you're shaving with a knife) very appropriate.
Final note. It's not what you asked for, but have you considered psychobillly? Here's Red Riding Hood and Southern Boys."We need the excuse of fiction to stage what we truly are." ~ Slavoj Žižek, The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema

Re: Creepy "Hillbilly" Music
Both the Deadwood and Carnivale tv show soundtracks would be very apropos, especially the incidental music.
Specific example: the track Iguazu from Deadwood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfusxHokCDg
