Default [3.5e World Project] Community World o' Brew (Workers and Brew needed!)

A while ago, I had the idea for creating a world that incorporated as many Homebrews as possible, creating a completely new environment for which games could take place. This would be a land of odd things and odd people. A land where Ozodrins go to the mart and buy Oooolong tea from a manifested Calcatrix.

In short: If we were to all band together and create a world, jamming as much brew as we could into it, what would it be like? How would all the new factions and powers interact? What would synergize? What wouldn't?

I realize that there is an entire sub-forum for Worldbuilding, but I also know that a fair number of brewers rarely if ever check it out. And so I am making this thread here, instead, to recruit workers and to accept brew-applications.

Brew I would like submitted: Anything that adds to the D&D experience or makes for a more interesting, diverse world. This is a VERY broad range, including Fixes of all kinds, tweaks to core mechanics, system add-ons, and of course homebrewed feats, spells, monsters, Races, PrCs and Base Classes. So pretty much anything, really. Just keep it 3.5e.

Any wishing to see their brew included in this potential world (It is only a thought right now, very much dependent on time and community support) should make a post including a link to said work as well a brief paragraph summarizing the work and how it would affect the world. More than one work may be submitted by a single brewer. Only the creator may submit their work, but fans may urge them to apply. Submitting a work means that you have given permission for it to be used in this project, and by extension given permission for any group using the resulting to world to thus use your work.

Additionally, I obviously can't do this by myself. I'd love to have a group of devoted workers to sift through all of the incoming brews (I hope we have a lot) and to help me put together the world. Any interested in being an Architect should have a bolded "Architect" sign at the start of their post, followed by a brief paragraph explaining their capabilities, credentials, and experience.

If and when this gets a decent amount of support, a new thread will be created in World Building where the official construction will be placed.

So... Thoughts? Is this an idea people would be willing to pursue?

I have read through the majority of large projects on these boards and demonstrated my comprehension of them by creating Bloodlines. I have been brewing and creating worlds for 3.5e for several years and have always looked towards the brews of others for a source of inspiration. I can contribute a moderate amount of time to this and am willing to spearhead the endeavor, assuming no other, more qualified individual steps forward.

    Submitted Brews:

    Bloodlines

Bloodlines are a way to show the supernatural heritage of a character and provide them with thematic bonuses while offering a fair trade of level features for these abilities. Many of my Bloodlines are based off of works I hope to see included here, and as such including the corresponding Bloodlines makes a lot of sense.

    Blood King

If Bloodlines are being used, the Blood King should as well. The Blood King is a base class focused around the manipulation of multiple supernatural heritages, including the ability to temporarily absorb the powers of beings tied to a bloodline.

    Battle Mage

The Battle Mage is an improved Martial/Caster Theurge, providing a decent replacement for the abysmal Eldritch Knight. The Battle Mage makes this simple gish more viable without having to refer to obscure rules and builds.

    Mass Combat

Mass Combat allows large numbers of characters to combat one another in a framework that is manageable enough for a standard gaming group to run. This would make war-campaigns feasible in this world. A possible difficulty would be compatibility with later 'brews, but I believe we could create said compatibilities.

NPC Prestige Classes (Links a bit down in said extended sig)

These would add variety and power to random NPCs found in the world. It is simple and easy. The occasional NPC ally with one of these can be very useful.

I have read many a project on the boards as well as peached a good few. I've also made a decent handful of homebrew myself. I've frequently worked on creating fictional worlds, though not much of it has wound up on these boards (for some examples though, see Ishka, a handful of other comunity world building projects, and my own occasionally updated setting Sun Behind Night). I can contribute a reasonable amount of time to this project, provided no unforeseen circumstances arise.

    Ozodrin and PRCs

Ozodrin are beings somewhat different from normal members of their race. That is, if you consider turning into an eldritch horror to be merely 'somewhat different.'

    Wisp Fire Guide

Individuals who have taken a shine to shining a path wrought with hazards, and making it seem too irresistible not to take. May help themselves to your belongings after.

    Ethereal Magic

Magic that draws on the Ethereal Plane. Still lacks high level spells, though possesses two base classes.

    Sponge

Plays music to better attune themselves with the pain of the world, that they may better share it with others.

    Gilim-á-úr-šár

    A ball of tentacles.

    Ifiol

A race of people that are hard to kill if you try too hard.

    Ghūl

They can steal the form of those they eat.

    Blooded

A race that is prone to having more than just a little non-human blood.

    Spirit Gate

A monster that provides a natural gate to the ethereal plane.

    Shiny

    It's so shiny.

    Necroclock Devices

Technology build around combining necromancy and clockwork. Usably, but may well be expanded upon in the near future as only the basic components are yet stated.

Other homebrew of mine (see extended signature) may most likely be used, but was not added to this list for various reasons (such as incompleteness or inferior quality). As such ask before making use of it.

I've only been playing D&D for about a year and a half, so I'm not sure how qualified I'd be in terms of architecture. Moreover, the next few weeks are going to be pretty brutal, so I won't even know if I'll have time until halfway through April.

    My usual mechanical explanation:

In general, spellshape attacks and arcane formulae are ranged touch attacks and subject to spell resistance. However, in some cases--the powers of Blustering Gale, Crushing Stone, Natural Balance, and Roaring Tide, to be specific--the spellshape attacks are instead normal ranged attacks, but are not subject to spell resistance. In such cases, you use your shaper level in place of your base attack bonus when making your attack.

In terms of fluff, it's magic. I've begun a mental draft of spellshaping as raw magic, without the discipline or restriction of normal spellcasting, but I haven't ironed it all out yet.

I have been playing and homebrewing in 3.5 for about 3 years now. I have quite a bit of play experience, and I would love to help in any way possible. I have come into some extra time due to some IRL drama, and would be able to commit a reasonable amount of time, barring future exam craziness/scheduling conflicts and such.

In terms of systems that are fairly unique that have some level of homebrew behind them, I have:

The Barbarian: The Barbarian is a fix of the Core class, and uses a very different mechanic. Instead of uses per day, the Barbarian has a pool of rage points that fills whenever he attacks or takes damage. He can use the rage points to fuel his rage ability (which slowly drains his rage points, unless he is further attacked or attacks) and his rage abilities. Rage abilities are on a really comprehensive list, and the Barbarian gains one at each odd level, starting at first. They allow for a very varied and wide range of builds for each Barbarian. This class also has quite a few prestige classes associated with it, allowing the Barbarian to represent the Tank, Religious Zealot, Skirmisher, Hunter/Archer, Shapeshifter, and Orcish Battle Priest. The Barbarian has also been playtested by moi, and provides a really interesting combat experience (according to my own, rather biased, opinion).

Stitch Witch: A rather fun class, if I say so myself. I am currently working on additional classes for this system. Basically, it involves the use of cloth as a weapon and as a buff. The Stitch Witch gains Shrouds, Weaves, and Effigies. Shrouds give a bonus to certain things to all allies within the area of the shroud, based on the Stitch Witch's level. Weaves are weapons made out of cloth, which provide very specific bonuses depending on what kind of weapon is summoned. Effigies are constructs whose size category is based on the Stitch Witch's level. The Stitch Witch can automatically summon Effigies upon 4th level, but has to choose certain aspects of the Effigy she wants to use. She gains those at 5th level, and then progressively over her career. The aspects range from things such as Scare-Crow (being able to frighten enemies) to Greatwall Golem (Tank), to Mage Riddled (Can cast some spells that are based on level of the Stitch Witch once per encounter). This allows for the Stitch Witch to perform as a very strong fifth wheel member to the party, or even a main member, if they know what they are doing.

Polytheism: These rules allow for Clerics who wish to worship more than one god and still benefit from domains. There are currently 11 pantheons of gods that have Domains based on them, and making Domains based on these rules is surprisingly easy.

Base Classes: I have redone many (most) of the Core base classes to include ToB or actual special abilities, but my favorite are the trifecta Planar Mage, Priest, and Psionicist. They each are given specific abilities based on a path they choose; for the Planar Mage, the paths are based on the plane they align with: Astral, Shadow, Elemental, Material, Positive, Negative, Limbo, or Mechanus. These planes function as similar to the nine schools of magic in traditional arcane magic, only condensed or expanded. The Planar Mage then gets abilities based on the plane, as well as their spell list based on the plane. The Planar Mage also gains certain spells that they can use outside of combat at will, which are very basic utility spells that help the Planar Mage be less focused on specific combat related things. The Priest, on the other hand, gains a set number of domains, and can only cast spells from those domains. This allows them to choose a fairly varied spell list, but without access to every single cleric spell. The Priest also gains abilities based on their chosen Domains, which are the defining aspect of what the Priest does. The Psionicist is to these classes as the Psion is the regular casters. They use power points instead of spell slots, but are otherwise very similar to the other reduxes. The Psionicist chooses a Discipline that determines their power list, and then gains class features based on that Discipline. The Psionicist also gains out of combat utility powers like the Planar Mage, but more so psionically oriented ones. Seventeen new powers were developed for the Psionicist specifically, in order to help expand the power lists of the Disciplines. Each class detailed here only gains up to seventh level casting.

I have read through about half of these forums, and sadly have not PEACHed as much as I should have; I have a couple of my own homebrew worlds kicking around, but most all of them aren't on the boards.

I can contribute when I can, I guess...

    Spoiler
    Show
    Abortive starts to settings:

The Demiplane of Emotion: An early thing I started 'brewing, then I stopped, because I had no experience with mechanical stuff back then.

<Setting> Origins: The start of a setting; essentially, just a metaphysical history of a world.

The World Between: What you get when you take 5 planes, and string a bajillion demiplanes in there as bridges.

Unity: A setting based around symbiosis rather than predation.

A Multiversal War: The start of an idea. Maybe.

    Base Classes (Complete)

The Impossible Warrior: My attempt at making a Fighter that works of variant Metamagic feats; has two PrCs, and is generally a poor showing compared to my new stuff. This was my first actual base class 'brewing, which was in... Less than two years ago. Huh, time flies.

The Librarian: Another early class; I'm thinking of doing a fixer-upper at some point, but we'll see.

Nord's Blade: Another early class, that has an... interesting way of doing things. I kinda cringe when I look at it now...

The Touched Warrior: This is probably the first Base Class I made that I'm still proud of; it's also the only one where a player of mine has used it at an actual table. It uses Bloodlines.

The Machiavellian: Mind control at its best! I based this primarilly off the wording of the original "Command" spell in 1e.

The Icon: Wow, this class is over-powered. What was I thinking?

The Totentanzer: Kinda weird, and only really playable up to 6th level, but I will eventually post all my notes for this. I will, really!

The Gestaltwandler: My obligatory attempt at making a shapechanger; it is kinda obtuse and involves Bloodlines.

Monstrous Armiger: Essentially, what you get when you mix Ectopic Skin and the Summon Monster spells, and make it into a base class; I might rewrite it later with a more defined list of the "armors" you can have.

Salvager: My baby, my very little love; it has one PrC so far, and a coupla feats, and is very playable. I played it in a recent game and did rather well.

Krigsherran: My newest offering; a combat BEAST that does not use a single maneuver, at all.

The Bemäntelter Schatten: This is actually my favorite class out of the ones I have made; it just makes me feel like an alien, shadowcasting mofo.

Sibling Paragon: A powerful semi-joke class. Include at your risk.

Combinatoric Maven: Think of it as a "prototype" Salvager.

    Class Concepts

The Vassal: Still needs considerable work, but one pact has been written out, in the very least.

Trained Magic: Essentially, a magic system based off Handle Animal; I've got a couple of them written out, and it kinda needs a table and some more ideas, but it could work.

PrCs I am Proud of (I have a couple that must NEVER see the light of day. Ever.)

Unrepentant Pact-Bound Hunter: What you get when you mix Rangers, Warlocks, and HATRED into one mess.

Deceit Mage: Bluff your way into magical power; it does require some clarification, but that can wait.

Scion of Ashardalon: A Warlock/DFA cross that is awesome.

    A Xenoalchemy/Salvager mixture.

And, of course, any PrC that's in a class thread.

    Alternate Class Features/Class Variants

"Wilder": Basically, comboing the Sorcerer and the Wilder.

Metaclass Levels: More theoretical than anything else...

    Tiered Permutations: ACFs on CRACK!

Blademaster Binder: Project your bound vestiges as weaponry.

    Artifacts and Items

Big Book of Artifacts (Only 2): I'm planning on continuing with these creepy artifacts, I swear!

The Book of Absolute Mundanity: Flipping all spellcasters the bird.

The Whispersong Blade: A Bard's Sidearm.

Truewriter's Tome: You essentially have a much more versatile Death Note. Enjoy.

The Ring of Holes: Creating infinitely large dungeons is fun!

Cloth of Copper: In my defense, I was ignorant of Shapesand at the time.

    Feats of a Standalone Nature:

[Charm] Feats: A small subsystem I'm thinking of revisiting.

Spellfire Familiar: NO IDEA on the balance of this thing.

    Metafeats: A bit of silliness.

Ectopic Skin feats: I kinda want to write more of these, you know?

Martial Crafting: For all your non-magical crafting needs.

    Miscellany

e6 Epic Destinies: A variant on the normal e6 end game.

Unrepentant Hunter Discipline: The start of an insanely vile discipline based of Decipher Script; I'm actually working on finishing up an updated version of it.

Exquisite Ribbon-Dancer Discipline: Here's one I have on my computer, but it just has never been posted...

The Human Statblock: For all your template needs.

Excellencies: Think of them as better Skill Tricks; need help making some.

Hmm. I'd willingly fork over my whole homebrew list to the project, provided I was credited somewhere in there, but it seems I need to go one-by-one to obey da rules. I'll just grab the most popular for now, and we'll get in-depth later on.

    the Fleshforge Legacy

Specifically, the race-re-imaginings. I was quite fond of them, and they are a significant change from the usual. There's some other cool stuff in there, if you want that.

    Tawaki

A race of penguin-pirates, based off new zeland penguins. Possibly the most popular of my creations.

    Titan-souled

    Cute bruisers! DO IT.

    Drasil

A playable sort of treefolk race. I like highly diverse settings, just warning you.

    Tibur Kosj

A race of small, playable dragons. They're actually true dragons with the draconic equivalent of dwarfism.

    Garuda

Raptorans on steroids. Big, burly warrior-bird-dudes, cousins to the mighty Roc.

    Guardian

A base class that's should actually do a pretty good job of protecting others.

There may be more things later, but I dunno.

Looks like we have some interest, here! Even with just this amount, I think we'd be able to come up with quite the world. I'm eager to see who else volunteers their services and their work!

Amechra, that is a LOT of work. I didn't realize you'd made so much.

I have zero experience conducting a community project, but I have some vague ideas of how this might work - Namely the chosen Architects having a group chat on an IRC of some sort to flesh out some overarching ideas, followed by divvying up various tasks among said Architects based on skill and preference. This work would then be recompiled, edited, posted for review and so on. Possibly in stages? I have no clue if that is an awful or wonderful plan and I am obviously open to suggestions. Thoughts?

That seems like the best way to make all of the different aspects of the setting work. We will probably need some group consensus on certain issues, if only so that the different materials being written don't outright clash with each other.

Hm... Count me in, I guess. Might have some time to help out, between different classes' work.

    Submitting a few things.

Like the Barrier Mage, and a pair of my PrC's.

The base class is, simply put, a magic user class similar to the warmage, albeit more on the defensive side. It'd likely have little effect on the setting as a whole.

The first Prestige Class would... Well, likely have little effect. Someone who focuses on a variant of Call Weaponry doesn't really have much effect on a world.

Though I can see shopkeepers now stalling people when buying weapons to make sure that they're real, and not just a construct...

The second PrC will likely be common in law enforcement groups and as arena managers, due to their, well, ability to make everything non-lethal and impose restrictions. Wherever they are, though, things get a bit more lawful.

Might have more to add later.

That's what I was thinking with the group chat before the work really begins - We'd be like Rich's Gods deciding what to include and what not to, as well as general themes and the way the world as a whole works. We'd need to settle on the major nations, obviously what material we're using, standings of various classes, dominance of different pieces of work, etc. etc. It doesn't need to be detailed, just enough to have the world seem cohesive. I'd imagine a lot of smoothing out would occur once the first wave of work has been done, as everyone views all the submitted bits and works out the kinks.

And sweet, we got The Mage King and Squish!

I would definitely be interested in this project, but most of my projects are as-of-yet not quite fully finished. I'll add stuff, but I can't necessarily vouch for it's completeness. I will definitely keep posted on this, though, because I'm very interested in how it develops.

Thoughts?
    Neither had I.

And the problem with an IRC is that... I have never used one before, and I don't know what time we would be on. Thoughts?

That WOULD be a problem, but for speedy communication I think that'd be the most convenient. We could use a thread, but my experience is that goes a bit slower. It'll depend largely on the time zones of the Architects.

Speaking of which, should I limit the number of Architects, or should I accept as many as apply? So far all those that have expressed willingness I think could contribute largely to the project. Again, not a lot of experience with this sort of thing.

    Architect

I'm on my phone at the moment, but I'll be submitting my Penitent Blade, Kensei, Arbiter and Noble Phantasms.

I'm also working on a brutal martial discipline and a couple PrCs including a binder PrC and a totemist PrC.

I'm creative and dedicated and I think I have a great deal to add to this project.

    Architect
I have good experience with large projects, including one of the largest (but still severely incomplete) Binder of Souls Project. I make up new worlds in my spare time, general by thinking of homebrew I want to add and then thinking about all the possible results of that homebrew being in the world and then the results of that, and then the results of that, etc.

Also I regardly allow homebrew in the games I DM but I examine each before admittance, and thus I have experience with examining classes and spells etc.

There is one problem though, my access to most sites is rather limited and I have no access to chat sites.

    Submitted Brews

    Binder of Souls Project
This project includes a a class dedicated to binding the souls of creatures creating potential servants, enchanting items, animating golems, empowering creatures, and the land itself. There is also several feats designed for the class. A template which is acquired when you take someones soul out of there body. And there is also a slight change to the summoning system.

Adaption Ideas: Golems will likely be more common and magic items will be easier to spot. Magic Item stores will likely have to examine their wares to make sure they don't have fiends hiding within or angels imprisoned inside of objects.

    Durzite
A race of small thorny headed underground dwelling mages who specialize in the use of summoning and soul binding. They are intelligent and have stronger souls that other species but they lack empathy as a result of evolving in the underdark.

Adaption Ideas: Could potentially become a merchant race who specialize in the trade of souls in the planes using the binding magic to become amazingly rich.

    Prenumbal Rift
A living rift which has a tentacled creature within. It is immune to all damage unless you attack its tendrils.

Adaption Ideas: All the Prenumbral Rifts in the world be one huge creature which is sealed off and trying to re-enter the world.

    Draketooth
A normal Draketooth is a small wingless dragon which act like hunting dogs to kobolds, but they do have some magical power. An Elemental Draketooth on the other hand is attuned to two elemental forces, and are highly intelligent, they are seen as equals amoung the kobolds.

Not as of yet - It seems like I'm going to indeed be organizing this thing, so I want to have a decent amount of time when I do. As you know, I've been spending a lot of time ironing out a new base class (Which I will submit to this as well). Then I'm going to be gone for a little less than a week, starting this Friday. Once I return, I shall see about getting this project properly underway.

    Tentative Architect

I've been playing 3.5 for about a full year, with the vast majority of my experience in PbP. I've DM'd, played, etc. I'm not anywhere near as accomplished a homebrewer as I'd like to be, but I have a base class (a wizard remix for my setting) and a PrC (a fighter that focuses on throwing double weapons a bone) on the way.

My real joy, however, comes from worldbuilding. I'm the creator (with help, of course) of the Patria setting, which has surpassed 20 pages. I could really care less about mechanics, in most cases, but the joy of exploration is all the greater when you're exploring something that comes from within you. I'd be tempted to wax eloquent here, but I'm not sure how necessary it is. And really, I'm not sure you all want me to go all Walt Whitman on this thread.

The one thing that causes me to be "Tentative" is time. I missed some school for illness and I've been spending my Spring Break catching up, but I still have a frowny-face inducing lack of free time, which is only compounded by my DMing one game and playing in about four others.

So, I'll contribute all that I can, most of which will be tasty fluff.
Guess who's good at avatars? Thormag. That's who.

A Campaign Setting more than a year in the making, Patria!

    Architect

Been playing 3.5 for 6 years, and DMed almost the whole time. I've spent a lot of time on the wizards boards, then moved here. Also, I have next week off, so I could get a bunch of work done

I'm rather confident with mechanics, and casters mostly. People who follow me around the boards may notice I favor Necromancy. I think I'd fit best at placing class's roles in a society and figuring out how the Trippyverse wouldn't happen, along with logically implementing the effects certain classes would have on the world's daily life.

I might have a submission or two, but I'll worry about that later.
