    Default An alternative to PbP

I've been considering starting up a roleplaying game online. I've thought of having a PbP game here, but then I realized that the game would drag on and on for a very long time.
So, is there a really good alternative for hosting/playing RPGs online?
Want I need it to do:
    • Be able to support a fully custom RPG system.
    • Be able to post images, such as maps and character portraits.
    • Optional: allow dice-rolling. The reason why this is entirely optional is because I found this site.

You should take a look at MapTool. It lets you host servers, create custom macros for your system, has dice rolls, and a fairly extensive amount of forum support. I've used it a few times, and depending on how in depth you'll be using the macros, it may have a bit of a learning curve. But if you just want it to be a virtual table, it can do that too, and very well.

Another popular option is OpenRPG, which I personally find a little friendlier than MapTool, but that's largely a matter of preference as far as I know. It has support for pretty much anything, including chat-based dice, macros, layered maps, etc.

I would recommend just using Skype and an online diceroller, where I recommend Catch your hare. You can send pictures over Skype quite easily, and if you don't really use maps a lot, it's by far the easiest.

    Your link is broken. http://www.catchyourhare.com/diceroller/

I haven't tried Catch your hare, but I do like dicelog.

This. Unless you're looking for other means of asynchronous play... those would then be PbP with a new coat of paint.

I think I'll be going with this.
Though you weren't kidding about the learning curve on macros. I'll probably not rely on them when I'm running the campaign.
