An odd request- Songs of the Gibbering Mouther?
(Trying capitalization, as some commented. Hopefully i won't offend people's sensibilities now?)
Hi there. In my next D&D meeting the party will have a "boss fight" with a monster which i like very much- the Gibbering Mouther. For those who don't know it- it's a horrific ooze like monster, made out of ever shifting flesh, multitude of eyes and biting teeth, which emits a horrible gibbering which may drive it's victims mad or confused, as it latches unto them, surrounds them and tries to digest them.
I've altered it from the original design so that it can split and regroup to different masses of flesh. I've also made it's gibbering a bit more frightening, in that it has a sort of innate uncontrolled psychic abilities to "hear" your secrets, thoughts and fears, and use them against you, often in the voices of people you know- enemies, loved ones, and so on...
(If you're really interested, you can check the monster compendium under my sig, it's the last monster added. However, it's really not required.)
Right! the thing is i would love to input some deeply disturbing music to the encounter. I imagine the battle might take some time. Ideally, i would love the music to somehow mimic the Gibbering/ mumbling/ shouting/ whispering/ multitude of voices and influences of the gibbering mouther, without losing the creepy effect.
So far i got only two songs on My little list of horror
Addition from Sutremaine (To come AFTER the horror part)
Devil may cry
By Admiral Squish
Somehwat Atonal music
By NichG
Akira Mutation
Akira Shohmyoh
I'd love it if you could suggest more?
Help me make this encounter one my players won't forget! (no matter how much they'll want to )
thanks in advance!

Re: An odd request- Songs of the Gibbering Mouther?
I kind of immediately imagined a gibbering mouther singing all the parts of a barbershop quartet by himself.
Several battle themes from Evangelion 2.0 contain old style chanting, but are definitely the sort of songs you'd listen to in a battle. Destiny in particular would fit.
But if you want the one they'll never forget, I'd go with the barbershop quartet.Last edited by Yukitsu; 2012-08-05 at 11:14 AM.
Me: I'd get the paladin to help, but we might end up with a kid that believes in fairy tales.
DM: aye, and it's not like she's been saved by a mysterious little girl and a band of real live puppets from a bad man and worse step-sister to go live with the faries in the happy land.
Me: Yeah, a knight in shining armour might just bring her over the edge.

I am reminded of the comic character Axolotl: http://www.5ideways.com/2006/20060612-3.php

whose soundtrack, barbershopped with multiple mouths, is

More generally, anime soundtracks - such as some fight music from Blood+, and the aforementioned Evangelion, are always good places to start.
Closer to what you requested, though... there is an industrial band called Die Form which might fit the bill. Some of their songs, at least. Or maybe the song "Venus in fear" could work.Last edited by Analytica; 2012-08-05 at 02:00 PM.

Re: An odd request- Songs of the Gibbering Mouther?
I was going to suggest some good old-fashioned boss music, but after hearing that tuneless stuff you linked to...
Ah well, you can still start with this and let the mouther ease off a bit while that's playing. Then you can switch to the noises in the OP and give them the full Giygas experience.

Check out the soundtrack to The White Chamber (check out the Downloads page for the MP3s). There's definitely a couple of tracks in there that might be appropriate. Some are a little sci-fi, but there's a fair bit in there that you can use (I'd also reccomend playing the game...short, but very awesome and creepy in a Lovecraftian way!).
I apologise if I come across daft. I'm a bit like that. I also like a good argument, so please don't take offence if I'm somewhat...forthright.
Please be aware; when it comes to 5ed D&D, I own Core (1st printing) and SCAG only. All my opinions and rulings are based solely on those, unless otherwise stated. I reserve the right of ignorance of errata or any other source.

Re: An odd request- Songs of the Gibbering Mouther?
I checked quite a few of the You Tube Evangelion tracks. they seemed... not enough horror andway too composed for what i'm looking, but thanks.
Axolotol does indeed remind a gibbering mouther. The original creature looks like this.
Spoiler
I listened to Die Form. some interesting music, but isn't quite what i'm looking for, thanks anyway!
This can work quite nicely after the initial horror tracks, when it's "just" a fight. good call. Thanks! i'll add it up.
Some nice tracks there. I think I can use tracks 1, 12, 13, and 16. I'm a bit of a techno incompetent guy. any way to link MP3 tracks together? So that I won't need to keep activating the music mid game? Any way to somehow connect these to You Tube vids?
Thank you all! Keep them coming?Check my extended signature

Look up atonal music. We covered it in class and I was SO glad to be free of it when the section was over. It makes your soul hurt.

Re: An odd request- Songs of the Gibbering Mouther?
There are a few tracks from Soul Nomad I like for beautiful but horrifying things. You could mess with the players by having the actual song be beautiful but weird.
http://youtu.be/wkIGeP68ORA
http://youtu.be/iJ_rnnIRgr4
They also have a kind of polyphony going on. I might also suggest some stuff from the Ar Tonelico series where there's a lot of multiple-copies-of-the-same-singer, though it doesn't quite get the far realms vibe going (though the artificial language will help with alien-ness a bit).
EXEC_ViiBaCi_MjiiRa: http://youtu.be/qwi529twCpY
Doll's Polyphony from Akira might be good too: http://youtu.be/vwVFla6AFiU
The problem with all of these of course is that they're not dissonant or clashing like you might expect from a gibbering mouther. Shohmyoh is probably better for this by a little bit: http://youtu.be/ncRQvuT1Mac
Mutation would also be very good: http://youtu.be/w-Z_hbI3usA

Re: An odd request- Songs of the Gibbering Mouther?
thanks, found one track that is quite perfect, added it to the list above
The Akira soundtracks are fantastic. The mutation one could be the Gibbering Mouther (or the chamber) intoning something before the battle... would add a bit of Creepy... thanks!Check my extended signature
