    Monster Competition Reloaded I
    Into the Labyrinth

Art by TitusLunter of DeviantArt, used with permission.

Beneath the earth is another world, a limitless labyrinth of caverns and corridors, lit with glowing fungus, harboring thousands of dark secrets. The place is crawling with horrific monsters, dotted with eerie cities, and laden with priceless treasures.

    It is called the Underdark.

This contest begins with the posting of this thread, and will continue until the first of December.

Soon after it ends, a poll will be opened, and Playgrounders can vote on their favorite monster until the first day of the next month.

    • You will be creating an original creature for Dungeons & Dragons 3.5. It must be some sort of species or unique creature that lives deep beneath the earth, in ancient catacombs, underground seas, cave complexes, or similar.
    • The entry must include a name, at least one complete stat-block, a detailed description, and lore. Adventure hooks are also encouraged. Incomplete entries will be disqualified upon the deadline. Templates are allowed.
    • Entries must be 3.5 edition. The new MM4-5 format is encouraged, but not required.
    • Post all entries on this thread. Do not post conversation here. Any and All Comments and discussions will take place on a separate thread here (this is a link).
    • One entry per participant. No double-teaming.
    • Entries copied from some other source (splatbook, alternate website, etc) will be disqualified. All entries must be a new creation, not one already posted. Adding class levels to an already published or posted creature does not count as a new monster. Nor does adding templates. There must be an original base creature or template.
    • No reserving posts. Feel free to post a creature and tweak it, but you have to have the basic beast already done.
    • Please state if you do not want critiques, otherwise other participants will likely give a rundown of your build in the chat thread.

Default Re: Monster Competition Reloaded I: Into the Labyrinth

This entry is extremely WIP right now. Input would be appreciated on how to make the Wallhugger ability less overwhelming for DMs, though.

    Deep Sludge

    Medium Ooze
    Hit Dice: 16d10+80 (168 hp)
    Initiative: -4
    Speed: Special (see Wallhugger)
    Armor Class: 18 (+12 natural, -4 Dex), touch, flat-footed
    Base Attack/Grapple: +12/+20
    Attack: Tentacle +20 melee (2d6+12 +1d6 acid)
Full Attack: Tentacle +20 melee (2d6+12 +1d6 acid)
    Space/Reach: 4 squares (see Wallhugger)/10 ft
Special Attacks: Improved Grab, Caustic Secretion
Special Qualities: Wallhugger, Sticky, DR 10/slashing
    Saves: Fort +10, Ref +1, Will +3
    Abilities: Str 26, Dex 2, Con 20, Int -, Wis 6, Cha 1
    Environment: Underground caverns
    Challenge Rating: 9
    Alignment: True Neutral
    Level Adjustment:

Wallhugger (Ex): Deep Sludges make their home on walls, floors, and ceilings. They are, rather than the spherical, puddle-like shape of most oozes, completely flat and spread out across a large area. Deep Sludges must maintain contact with a solid surface at all times. When they take a move action, they may reconfigure their entire shape as they move. The new shape must be contiguous (every square adjacent to at least one other occupied square), and no square of the new shape may be more than 30 feet from a square of the old shape.

Caustic Secretion (Ex): Deep sludges constantly exude an extremely acidic substance that acts as a neurotoxin to anything it contacts. Any enemy damaged by a deep sludge's tentacle or constrict attack takes an additional 1d6 acid damage and must make a DC 16 Fortitude save or be stunned for 1d4 rounds. 1d10 doses of this toxin may be harvested from a dead deep sludge (+1d10 per size category above medium), usable as a contact poison worth 150gp per dose.

Sticky (Ex): The substance secreted by deep sludges is not only toxic, but extremely adhesive. A deep sludge may initiate a free grapple attempt against any creature that enters a square it occupies or attacks it with a natural weapon and a free disarm attempt against any manufactured weapon used to strike it.

    - Optional -

    Plot Hook/Story if any
The Phase Dancer - A spellsword who has learned to use teleportation to stab people.
The Stalwart - An unarmed, unarmored wall of muscle that fights with surges of strength and massive combat maneuver combos.
