    IC Thread

Ok, everyone, welcome to Game 2! We have some new people, and some familiar faces, so I'm going to start us off by posting the rules again.

    Activity:
    • Expected rate of posting is at least once per day.
    • If you don’t post in 48 hours, I will autopilot your character.
    • If you don’t post in a week, I reserve the right to kill off your character.

Going on hiatus with prior warning is absolutely fine: the above rules apply to unexpected disappearances. Drop me a notification before you’re going away/losing your internet access/what have you, and I’ll happily play your character as an NPC until you can return.

    Rolls:
    • Make all rolls using the forum dice roller, either in a spoiler-box in the relevant IC post, or in a separate post in this thread.
    • Some rolls (mainly ones at which you should not know whether you have succeeded or failed, and Perils of the Warp/Psychic Phenomena) I will make in secret.
    • As a time-saving device, I will roll all initiatives at the start of an encounter, allowing you to get straight to your actions rather than waiting about for each other.

    Combat:
When in combat, do not wait to post in sequence of initiative: post whenever you are free to post. If your actions depend on someone ahead of you in the initiative order, you can leave conditional instructions OOC. I will conduct my rolling for each combat round in this thread, and post an IC summary that signifies the end of the current round & the start of the next.

    Specific Combat Rulings:
    Spoiler
    Show
    Swift Attacks
All-out Attacks and Guarded Attacks can be made in conjunction with a Swift Attack or Lightning Attack, each remaining a Full Action and allowing the attacker to use their full number of attacks. The +20% from an AOA only applies to the first attack made; the -10% from a Guarded Attack applies to both attacks.

    Spoilers
A spoiler titled 'X Only' is intended only for the eyes of the player playing the character X. Please don't read 'em if they're not intended for you - you could spoil some surprises.

Please put your character sheet in your first post in this thread – either formatted into the post itself, or via a link. It helps me to find them if they’re all in one place.

With that out of the way, it's time for Game Specific whatnot.

    CLASSIFICATION: Dead World

Klybo itself is an extinct world, where the ruins of a lost colony poke up from the shifting sand. The harsh environment of this world spurned all attempts to settle it, and after the initial settlements failed the Administratum marked the world as unusable and moved on. However, Klybo's system contains a star capable of being harvested for solar plasma by the great Goliath-class factory ships, and one maintains station over the world, providing fuel to be contained within the massive storage tanks of a Sector fleet waystation situated on Klybo's largest moon.

The only other interest on Klybo is that of prospectors and archeologists, scouring the ruins for lost remnants of the technology carried by the first wave of settlers, in the days before the Imperium. It is thought that there remain functioning STC devices on the world, as yet undiscovered. Such a find would make the fortune of anyone lucky enough to discover it.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Nobody is innocent, there are merely varying levels of guilt.

In the wake of the events on Sepheris Secundus, I have been working to uncover additional information on Magos Moreus, as well as the others mentioned in Acolyte Severus' report. Special attention has been paid to R.A, whoever he may be, but his identity yet eludes me. A possible link has been discovered.

Magos Moreus was declared missing, presumed dead, twelve years ago when the ship he was travelling on failed to arrive at its destination. Until now, this was the last contact the Imperium's agents had with the Magos. His tracks have not been covered so well as R.A. It was possible to track down the passenger manifest of the ship he had arrived at Sephiris Secundus on. From there, we were able to trace him. It was discovered that another passenger on the transport that initially vanished twelve years ago was with him for a portion of his journey.

Viator Raltus, a known associate of the Magos and author of several documents declared restricted by the Ordo Xenos, arrived at Klybo one month ago. He has not left the world since that time. It is possible he is searching for the STC finds rumoured to be located there. Your task is to travel to Klybo, find Raltus, and determine what he is looking for and how he is connected to Magos Moreus.

A tall and thin individual, Severus gives the impression of an imposing but somewhat frail figure. He is a middle aged man, but the strain in his features due to his sanctioning process makes him look even older. His head is bald and bears extensive cable and psychic regulating circuitry and he is clean shaven at most times. Severus wears the robes fit for a member of the Scholastica Psykana of Calixis Sector and above them a black flak cloak.

The cloak he wears, resembles a long black coat with a hood and has no decorations on it, except for a small - rectangle shaped - pin featuring the insignia of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. In one of its internal pockets, approximatelly at chest height, Severus also keeps a wallet, containing his ID card, indicating his rank and position inside the Scholastica Psykana, as well as a metallic badge with his name and rank engraved on it, to show his induction to the Special Interrogations Department of the Inquisition's Black Ships. He usually covers his head with the cloak's hood, to obscure his cranial augmentations and keeps his hands gloved as well. At times, especially during missions in hazardous environments he's wearing a respirator as well, making him almost unrecognizable. In his neck lies his sanctioning brand, given to him in Terra, prior to his induction in Scholastica Psykana, testament to his strength of will and his unshakeable faith to the Emperor of Mankind.

His combat equipment consists of his mercy blade, that he carries concealed in the inside of his cloak, a las pistol and a sword. The latter two rest on their respective holster and scabbard on either side of his belt. In a pocket inside his robes rests Severus' psy-focus, the Imperial Tarot, which helps him focus his psychic prowess and delve with additional clarity in the currents of Immaterium. He is usually calm and conserved as a character and quite devout as well, reading many times from a worn book of Imperial Saints and praying for the "Guiding Light of the God Emperor".

Not very friendly, but cautious towards most people, especially those he does not know, Severus has a low tolerance threshold for show-offs and stupid behaviour and opening his mind and soul to the warp makes him at most times withdrawn and deadly serious. When part of a team though he can certainly follow orders and assist in collective goals and has grown accustomed to the constant scrutiny he undergoes from his superiors and those tasked to observe him closely for any lapse in his faith or taint in his soul.

He adamantly believes that the Emperor surely has a destiny for him and preserved him during his childhood and his emergence as a psyker and for this he's eternally grateful to him, striving everyday to cleanse humanity, through his service in the Imperial Organizations and as of lately in the Inquisition. He believes his psychic capabilities to be a blessing and a curse at the same time. The belief that being a psyker constitutes his personal tribulation, has instilled into Severus a devout, pious behaviour and attitude and led him to the path of righteousness. In addition to that he is a fervent opposer of rogue psykers and witches and when called upon to assist in the discovery of one, he is truly indomitable in his pursuit and dedication.

What most people do not know about Severus is that he enjoys music. He had managed to acquire an old set of recordings, when he was young aboard the Rogue Trader spacecraft and he still clings to this collection of vox-recordings as a treasured item. In the years that have passed, he has expanded his collection with various recordings of symphonies and orchestral music. It offers him a degree of calmness and consolation and allows him a few moments of serenity.

(I also found a very nice picture showing evidently the excessive mental strain every psyker undergoes, but unfortunately it doesn't show him wholly but only depicts his head. Still, I think it is a great one and therefore here it is.)

"Imagine knowing there was a door to the realm of Daemons, and the slightest innatention on your behalf would see them batter it down and rip you to shreds. Now imagine that door is inside your head. That's what being a psyker is like".

The words of the old Savant-Adjunct still echoed in Severus' head. Many were the lessons imparted upon him during his tutelage in the Scholastica Psykana, yet this simple axiomatic phrase summed up always the terrible truth behind their existence, the terrible price they would have to pay if they ever showed the slightest weakness against the denizens of the Immaterium.

The Sea of Souls, the Empyrean, the Warp as its many names are is both their greatest strength and inescapable nemesis. Only his faith to the Emperor Whose Holy Radiance gives hope and strength could ever protect him.

Severus began chanting the litany of protection against the dangers of the Warp and slowly exited the lecture room. His head swam with memories and those most important or painful seemed to resurface more often...

There are many places in the Imperium, many and varied worlds for humanity to prosper. And then there's the cold darkness of the void. Brave souls dare travel within it in huge starships, connecting the Imperium, bringing necessary supplies to far away planetary systems and performing thousands of other duties important for the continuous existence of humanity.

In such a vessel was Severus born, almost 45 standard imperial years ago. Among those who lived in the space between the stars. Those considered adventurous by mere imperial standards, those who wrote their own fate, or so they would have you believe. Aboard a Rogue Trader's vessel it was that - by the Emperor's will - he had drawn his first breath, a true child of the void, born in the strange environment of a space vessel, and destined to shine brightest in the infinite Sea of Souls.

But years have passed since then and Severus is grateful for the Emperor, is grateful for his cleansing and ever guiding Divine light, is grateful for the chance to serve him and through his own pain and strain serve humanity as a whole. For as his Undying Lord and Master gave his life to forever protect and guide humanity, so he must find courage everyday to put his dark past behind and serve His Divine Will, no matter the cost. And as Him on Terra protects us all, so does Severus strives to use his abilities for the benefit of the Imperium, by service to one of its most secretive organizations. The Holy Ordos of the Inquisition.

    Opening file 781/2, subfile 33.
Subject 378: Severus Drake, sanctioned imperial psyker, neonate of the Scholastica Psykana.
Origins: Starship "Necessary Expenditure", flagship of Roge Trader Jonquin Saul's merchant fleet.

My lord Inquisitor, most of the early life events of subject Drake Severus could not be recovered, since the Rogue Trader vessel upon which he was born, was not keeping detail records for such young individuals. Suffice to say that his early childhood was along the commonly known patterns for void born children. Perhaps with certain differences considered that the vessel was a rogue trader's flagship but this might be irrelevant given the early age he manifested psychic potential and his subsequent turn over to the Black Ships.

His psychic potential was discovered when he was around the age of 13, after some stranger than usual occurences in the spacecraft he was born, and was brought by the ship's security force to the attention of the captain, a famous Rogue Trader, Jonquin Saul. Him being a deeply faithful and devout individual with an existing affiliation to the Imperial Cult and its functionaries, understood Drake's situation and had him examined by both the ship's astropath and navigator. After exhaustive scrutiny, it was confirmed that the young boy possessed psychic potential. Thus, Saul contacted the authorities of Port Wander, and upon their next arrival at the space station, Drake was delivered to a cadre of acolytes, under your service, who happened to be present at the station for an irrelevant investigation on behalf of the Holy Ordos.

From then he was delivered to one of our Black ships and transported to Terra to undertake his sanctioning rites. According to his sanctioneer's reports, he exhibited considerable mental endurance and no sign of taint. One thing though was quite worthy of note and as such i'm informing you so you can decide for yourself. Despite the hardships he endured during his sanctioning rites and the fear and agony aboard the ominous Black Ships, Severus exhibited an ever increasing faith to the God-Emperor, never claiming his condition to be anything more than the burden imposed by Him, his personal tribulation, for his soul to be cleansed and try to assist as much as possible in His holy works. This escalated to a thorough hatred of anyone bearing psychic capabilities without proof of proper sanctioning, evolving Severus to a most useful psyker to be deployed against nascent or rogue psykers and witches. Particular care was taken to train him in various methods of identifying the psychic residue left by such tainted individuals, as well as to recognise the signs of their presence.

Reports from his teachers in the Scholastica Psykana, indicate a certain tendency of Severus to use his psychic potential in tasks involving the manipulation of the minds and feelings of others and they are expecting him to follow the psychic Disciplines of Divination or Telepathy, according to the latest mind scans and surgical probings they've carried out on his brain. I am not familiar with the medical terminology they use my Lord, but i'm certain of their expectations. In their psychic evaluation of Severus they refer to him with the epithet/title Golden Aeon. Upon further inquiry, i discovered that it is the title used by the Collegia of the Scholastica Psykana Calixis, to indicate a sanctioned psyker who shows potential and is tutored for further pursuit of the aforementioned psychic disciplines.

His mentors in the Scholastica Psykana were also adamant on the matters regarding his personal spiritual purity, confirming that he bears no taint of body and soul whatsoever. What is more, they even sent me a report from the resident confessor, who personally vouches for the neonate's purity of soul and unshakeable faith to the Lord of Mankind. Father Constantine highly recommends Severus for service, either as an aide to an ecclesiarchy-sanctioned witchunter or to the Holy Ordos of the Inquisition. He believes that the neonate's attitude regarding his psychic abilities, coupled with his intolerance and hatred of all those who evade the proper sanctioning procedures and endanger the stability and safety of the Imperium, would make him an ideal servant of the Ordo Hereticus foremostly, but also of any other Ordo in need of an individual with his special capabilities and training.

From all the above reports, i figured that you would be interested on such an individual my Lord, taking also into consideration your puritanical beliefs. His sanctioneers and teachers all agree that by enlisting the services of Neonate Severus Drake, you are utilizing a tool of the Emperor's Will, a servant purified and guided by His Divine Light, who would sooner fall onto his mercy blade rather than allow any warp taint to manifest through him.

To this end and according to your chief interrogator's Xanthis instructions, Severus Drake has been placed as an aide aboard one of our Black Ships, to practice his witch-finding and interrogating skills as well as receive necessary combat training. Thus far the results are most encouraging and i believe my Lord that with your expert guidance, this neonate may serve faithfully the Ordos and the Imperium.

    Interrogation chamber 7D.
Interrogator Xanthis of the Ordo Hereticus present.
    Neonate Severus Drake present.
    Scribe Lupus Zane present.
Interrogation subject: Detainee Castus Serghar, code 17G.

    Pre-Interrogation Procedures

Xanthis: - State your full name and identity.

Severus: - Severus Drake, imperial psyker, neonate of Scholastica Psykana, faithful servant of the Emperor.

X: -What is your classification according to the Scholastica Psykana?

S: -Practicioner of psychic disciplines with psychic rating 2, focused on pursuing the discipline of Telepathy. Official psykana classification is "Golden Aeon".

X: -Very well. Your sanctioning brand?

S: -On the side of my neck. (Severus opens his cloak making the mark visible).

X: -Allright. Do you understand the purpose of our assignment today?

S: -Yes sir. We are to examine the subject and assess his psychic potential if any. Also to discern any kind of taint that may have nestled inside his soul. Finally to see if we can trigger any kind of psychic reaction from the subject the better to understand his capabilities.

X: -That's correct neonate. I trust that you have studied the relvant procedures and familiarized yourself with them?

S: -I have sir. I have also watched various pict recordings of previous interrogations on other detainees.

X: -Good. Dilligence is properly rewarded neonate. Let's proceed inside. I will let you handle most of the procedure today and i'll be monitoring you closely.

Severus and Xanthis proceed inside the interrogation chamber.

Detainee 17G is chained in his chair. Xanthis stands on the door. Neonate Severus proceeds to sit before the detainee.

S: -Beginning interrogation of subject 17G at 07:00. Sir, state your name and place of origin.

C: -Castus...Castus Serghar. I was born in Acreadge. Please i haven't done anything, i'm just a young boy.

S: -Silence young one. You are in the custody of Imperial servants and you will answer only in relevance to our questions...Now, tell me, before the servants of the local church found you did you notice anything strange on yourself? Did you have nightmares, headaches, difficulty to concentrate or anything like that?

C: -No, no sir, i told the others as well. Nothing out of the ordinary. I swear, nothing.

S: -We'll see the sincerety of your words young one. Bear in mind though that is a crime to lie to a servant of the Emperor.

Neonate Severus then stands up and approaches subject 17G. He removes the gloves from his hands and touches the subject's head.

C: -Sir, what are you doing, leave me alone, you hurt me, my head, let go of me.

S: -......Answer me....what happened? What took you over? Why did they send you here?

C: -A pain, in my head, i was just taking care of my work in the barn, and my boss was yelling at me and i felt hotter and hotter and then something happened, the barn was on fire and we ran to bring water and douse it, but then they took me, said i was responsible.

S: -And were you not responsible young one? Wasn't it you who started the fire? To react to your boss's yelling? To show your anger and frustration? Wasn't it you?

Subject appears to be going under severe stress. His face distorts and monitoring organs confirm rising levels of brain and heart activity.

C: -Leave me alone, release my head, you're hurting me....

Slowly, the table near the subject and neonate Severus appears to accumulate frost and the temperature in the room begins to drop significantly. Interrogator Xanthis unholsters his shock maul and waits. Neonate Severus continues to touch the subjects head and begins to chant the litany of protection against the perils of the Warp.
Suddenly a surge of fire erupts from the subjects head, leaping to the hands of neonate Severus and engulfing him in flames. Interrogator Xanthis leaps behind the subject, knocking him unconscious with a well-placed hit from his shock maul.

X: -Call a medic and a security detail to transfer him to the medical facilities and then to the psychic nullifying ward. We're done here for the time being. Neonate Severus are you alright?

S: -I was expecting that Interrogator. As a matter of fact i was hoping to make that happen. Having read his file, it became apparent that he was an emerging pyrokine and i took no chances when probing him to unleash his power. Through a psychic technique that was taught to me prior to my transfer here, i was able to resist the flames until you incapacitated him.

X: -That's good to hear. I'd hate to loose a promising aide on his first interrogation.

    Age: 36
Career: Licensed bounty hunter (Arbitrator — Investigator)

    Description and background:

Appearance: 6'3'' and well-built, Solomon is quite a striking figure. Of mixed heritage, he has brown skin, a narrow face, an aquiline nose and thin lips. His black hair is shoulder-length and tied into a loose ponytail in casual disregard for Adeptus Arbites regulations. Most of his body is covered with battle scars and swirling black tattoos. Solomon dresses in a bulletproof black duster, fingerless gloves and high boots, an outfit he views as both intimidating and stylish. He carries himself with a kind of lazy confidence that suggests boredom, but it would be a mistake to try to catch him off-guard: few things escape his watchful black eyes.

Though he looks dour and takes a shameless pleasure in making people nervous, he appreciates the finer things in life such as strong booze, lho-sticks, gambling and women. He is a man of faith, yet does not let this stop him from indulging in a little sin once in a while: spending a night in a tavern or pleasure house will not bring down the Imperium, but letting traitors and heretics run amok certainly will.

Background: The orphaned son of two condemned heretics, Solomon Tark was raised from infancy by the Ecclesiarchy, who taught him that only a lifetime in the service of the Emperor could wash him of his parents' corruption. He accepted this fate without question, but it soon became clear that he was not destined to wear the cloth: while his zeal and determination were noteworthy, he obviously lacked the kind of patience, discipline and spiritual leanings for a clerical career. At the age of twelve, he was handed over to the Adeptus Arbites, where it was believed he could better serve the Emperor.

Early during his training, Solomon proved to be quite a competent fighter, but some of his superiors found him to be excessively trigger-happy and not much of a team worker. His eagerness to atone for his parents' crimes led him to reckless acts during missions. This earned him an ill-deserved reputation as an ambitious glory-seeker, as well as a perfectly deserved one as a loose bolter. The Lord Marshal in particular disliked Solomon's early history in the Ecclesiarchy, fearing that his split loyalty might one day be a source of trouble. He even came to suspect the young man of monitoring the Adeptus Arbites for the clergy. This was of course false, but from this point on, he made sure Solomon always ended up with the most dangerous assignments in faraway sectors. Only his quick wits and impressive physical resilience allowed him to survive the next few years, to the Lord Marshal's increasing irritation.

Solomon was no idiot, but it took him a while to understand the situation - the concept of loyalty was so deeply ingrained in him that he had trouble believing his commander would try to get him killed. When he did figure it out, he resolved to simply keep doing his job, since the most dangerous missions were often also the most important ones. But after one too many brush with death in the same month, he respectfully applied for a bounty hunter's license. This surprised the Lord Marshal, as bounty hunters licensed by the Adeptus Arbites usually operated alone, on the fringes of the organization — hardly the kind of position a spy or informant would choose. Not one to look at a gift Grox in the mouth, the Lord Marshal granted him the license. Solomon took well to this career move: the pay was better (if less regular), but he especially loved his newfound freedom and the thrill of the hunt: no more routine, no more pointless drills, no more paperwork... just him, his trusted autogun and his quarry. Some within the Adeptus Arbites criticized him for just killing his targets without interrogation, but none could fault his efficiency, resourcefulness and determination.

After providing assistance with a thorny problem on Saphiris Secundus, the bounty hunter was made an acolyte to Lady Inquisitor Kadis Valle, ending his period of relative independence. To him, this made little difference; but even if it had bothered him, it was not as if he had any choice in the matter. Whoever gives him orders, his loyalty to the Imperium remains unswerving.

There is no Shortage of Piety in the Imperium, and no shortage of Pious men. Even in the smoke-choked, gun-filled depths of Gunmetal City, there are Priests. Men and women who work tirelessly to spread the word of the Immortal God-Emperor. And priests, contrary to what some would tell you, do have hearts of their own. And Gabriel Cortez is living proof of all of these facts.
Born into the Ecclisiarchy, Gabriel spent his formative years walking in the Emperor's Light, and, unfortunately, this light came from one place in Gunmetal - the barrel of a gun.
He grew up around the ever-feuding gangs, preaching the word of Him on Earth to even those who didn't listen. He was humble, he was intelligent, he was calm, and he was funny, making friends with some of the most Hardened killers and helping to bring them to the Emperor's light. He made Arbites out of Scum, Guardians out of Assassins, and Believers out of Malcontents.

It was only appropriate that, with his talents, Gabriel was sent to Hive Tarsus across the surface of Scintilla when his training was to begin proper. After a few initial hiccups - owing primarily to the boys odd mannerisms picked up from the other Hive, where up was good and down was bad, the boy took to his new calling like a duck to water, often climbing to both the dangerously-hot and dangerously-cold reaches of Tarsus on "field work" to spread the word - and never once issuing a complaint about the whole mess. He was weak and frail, but strength of arms was a factor sorely lacking in the Tarsan system of education, and the boy's naturally keen mind and easy way with words were only sharpened in the great Cathedrals and Houses.

One day, word of one of the Ecclisarchy's own being murdered on the far world of Spheris Secundus reached Gabriel's ears - and, unfortunately, this news was accompanied by even worse news.
It seemed that Gabriel's Master - a tall, strong swordsmen from Tallarn had decided that Gabriel had been coddled enough - living in Hives - environmentally uncomfortable as they might be - had done the young Cleric no good. Scholarly pursuits, the Tallarn had decided did a true Priest of the Eccilisarchy no good.
Gabriel was going to investigate. And he hadn't a choice in the matter.

The Tallarn was not without pity, though, and delayed the young priest's deployment just long enough to have a spectacularly-crafted mono-moloecular edged scimitar crafted specifically to Gabriel's measurements shipped from the Hive world of Landunder, and gave the untested and little-trained priest a crash-course in sword-fighting, consuling that Spheris Secundus had little in the way of firearms and that his Metallican pistol should be kept concealed - but the sword was universal.

Thus delayed, armed, and so warned, the Ecclisarchy finally saw fit to send their fledging Cleric to investigate the matter of the dead woman.

Field Report Commander Kohler to Lord Voss

Village of Athry razed. Fields burned. Few casualties. No survivors. The armies of Lord Weiss will have little to eat come winter.

    Excerpt from Bosch Cathedral Records

… was the worst winter in living memory. The region suffered wide spread famine. Peasants were frozen within their homes. Those who had shelter still faced the troubles of plague. Entire armies, led by lords desperate for power, were snow bound, later discovered frozen. In the most gruesome cases, these poor souls resorted to cannibalism to survive. One army belonging to the local Lord Voss was almost entirely decimated, not by cold or hunger, but by, as the survivors claimed, a ghost. While such claims are utterly ridiculous, we have deployed an Exorcist to the area where it was sighted.

Reports from Exorcist Wolfgang Lyle to Bosch Cathedral

Two months I have searched for the ghost reported by those soldiers this past winter, but have found no signs of a disturbance from the Other Side. Still, the men of Lord Voss claim they are plagued by its presence. I will travel with them for a time, in hopes of finding more evidence.

A week after I began travelling with Lord Voss’ army, this ghost struck. It was late in the evening, the army spread out around the camp, disorganized, half asleep. It took out the scouts first, and a portion of the infantry. When they finally organized a defense, a dozen men lay dead, their throats slit. I only caught glimpses of the ghost in the firelight, but I am fairly certain this is no apparition. However, I have never seen a person appear so suddenly and disappear just as quickly. I will remain some time more, to discover the true nature of this ‘ghost.’

Letter to Lord Stein from Lord Voss

    My Liege,
Though our campaign against Lord Weiss is proving to be successful, my armies are being plagued by what the common soldiers are calling a ‘ghost’. It’s absurd, of course, but someone, or something, is out there hunting my men. I humbly request aid in tracking this ‘ghost’ so I may continue the campaign as planned.

Letter to Lord Voss from Lord Stein

    Voss,
I find your incompetence astounding. Ghosts? That may be a fine tale to tell the peasantry, but you expect me to believe that? More likely it’s a band of wolves. Or your men are deserting, sensing your weakness. If you cannot defeat Weiss by autumn, I may do the same. However, I am not heartless. I will send you some aid. Please welcome into your ranks my advisor Ignatz. Treat him as you would treat me.

Reports from Exorcist Wolfgang Lyle - Unsent

A new person joined the lord’s armies today. A strange fellow named Ignatz. He dresses like a nobleman, but doesn’t carry himself with their same unwarranted arrogance. Neither does he bear a family name. Whoever he is, he worked to gain his position. Word in the camp is that he is here about the ‘ghost’ as well. Commander Kohler just thinks he’s some spy sent here by Lord Stein to learn why their army is failing. Ignatz spoke with me about the ‘ghost’ and I told him what I have learned thus far. Something about him makes me uneasy, though I cannot place why.

There was another attack, this time in the early morning. The ‘ghost’ used the cover of the mist to get close. It ignored the scouts this time, slipping in amongst the soldiers. Its attack could have been truly devastating, had Ignatz not raised the alarm. It struck with both sword and bow, killing a half dozen before I could arm myself. During the fight, the ‘ghost’ rushed towards me. I raised my sword to defend myself, but it paused, looking me over, its state lingering on the sacred Aquilla I wear. Its eyes were strange, amber in color, the pupils slit like a cat’s. Its gaze was unnerving. There was no humanity there, no mercy. It was a predator, and its prey was this army alone, because, for some reason, it turned aside and selected another target. This ghost is mortal, and it seems to on some level recognize the authority of the Church. Who they are, however, I cannot begin to guess.

We were attacked again, this time in broad daylight. The ‘ghost’ ignored the regular soldiers, this time, striking directly at Commander Kohler. The man had no time to react, as it leapt on to him from an overhanging tree. It gutted him like an animal, tearing his innards out and leaving him to die. It turned on Ignatz next, again avoiding attacking me. Ignatz was surprised and raised a hand, I first thought to defend himself, but then the air was filled with the sound of unholy shrieking from the Other Side. The ‘ghost’ missed its swing, catching Ignatz shoulder in a superficial cut, as its muscles rebelled. The ‘ghost’ was soon helpless on the ground. The soldiers around us recoiled, blaming the ‘ghost’ for the ill omen upon us. Immediately I knew differently. Ignatz was a sorcerer, having made a pact with fell beings in exchange for his power. Whatever the threat this ‘ghost’ was, his was greater. I drew my sword, feigning as if to finish off the ‘ghost,’ before striking at Ignatz. He was not expecting the attack and was easily felled. With his death, the screaming faded. The ‘Ghost’ quickly found its feet and fled. None of the soldiers dared to stop him. They almost turned on me for killing Ignatz, but once I explained, they understood. I ordered that they burn both bodies and we would return to Lord Voss’ lands. He had employed that heretic and surely knew his nature. He must be confronted.

Letter from Lord Voss to Lord Stein – Intercepted

    My Liege,
I regret to inform you that your advisor Ignatz has been slain. The reports surrounding his death are confused. Most say the Exorcist, Wolfgang Lyle, branded him as a heretic and cut him down. Others claim it was the supposed ghost, who also killed my commander, Kohler. A frightened few even believe the ghost possessed Lyle! Whatever the cause, Lyle took command of the army and turned them back to my own holdings. Here, he tried to turn my own army against me. However charismatic the man was, he could not overcome my soldiers’ loyalty to the man who provides them food, shelter, and protection. As I write to you, the Exorcist and a small band of rebels still resist the inevitable. They shall soon be put down, and our campaign can continue.

Ordo Hereticus Internal Report from Acolyte Ravion

The Subject was found among the ruins of the Bosch Cathedral dragging the remains of Lord Voss towards the altar. Presumably, this was meant to be an offering to the Emperor. It was the armies and subjects of Lord Voss who began the rebellion against the church. From what I can discern the conflict arose after an Exoricist was sent to investigate a ‘ghost’ which was harassing the armies of Lord Voss. My interviews have revealed that the Subject discovered was this ‘ghost.’ I further believe that the ‘ghost’s’ skills would be well suited for work within the Empire and recommend that they be transferred to the care of the Moritat.

This is my first Dark Heresy character, and I was disappointed to see that Mythweavers doesn't have a sheet, so I shamelessly stole Calimos's with some variations.

Gray. Gray, gray, gray. The only better adjective for Novus is “cripplingly paranoid,” which is a little less immediately evident. Most people first notice how all color has been sucked out of this little man. His skin, hair, clothes, and eyes are the color of pale ash; even his guns are dull and dreary. Other than that, Novus is perpetually scraggly and poorly groomed, partly from disinterest and partly because his hair is frozen sticking up and out in all directions. Something scared it into this position, and like Novus himself, it never recovered from the trauma. That hair, his bad skin, and his wizened frame make him look much older than he really is: despite his appearance, he’s only twenty-seven.

Speaking of trauma, when meeting him for the first time, newcomers can quickly see that this man is fairly disturbed. He doesn’t seem violent—although the enormous Carnodon pistol he carries might not be comforting—but rather expects it from others. Fast movements make him jerk back, as does almost any motion from the corners of his vision. Even without outside stimulus, he twitches and blinks during most of his waking hours. A lot of people make the obvious assumption, hence his decidedly un-High Gothic nickname “the Coward,” which is technically accurate. Still, when faced with actual hostility, Novus doesn’t curl up in the corner. More often, he unloads clip after clip into his enemies while screaming wildly and fleeing if he can. Novus may very well be a coward, but he’s a coward who has discovered that while he might not have much to live for, he isn’t ready to try the alternative.

    Background
    Spoiler
    Show

With a name like this, one might expect Novus Octus Flavion to have a history of leadership and battle, but he actually owes the string of High Gothic to a pair of scholarly parents. They knew words and little else, and shortly after Novus learned his letters, he followed in their footsteps. Family trades were common aboard The Saint’s Humility, a gargantuan ship-city that had been deep in cycles of warp travel for two generations when Novus was born. Only the oldest crewmembers, some of them cybernetically enhanced, knew of life outside the ship as anything other than legend, but Novus grew up with plenty of those. His adept parents were good with stories, better than they were with children, so Novus spent his childhood with tales of the saints and heroes who inspired his name. He quickly decided that not only was he unlikely to live up to those ancient standards, he didn’t particularly even want to try, and so he sunk into the ship’s bureaucracy as a copyist. For years he vanished into that labyrinth of daily repetition and pointless, flavorless, soul-crushing mediocrity.

Novus didn’t mind; he found that boredom suited him. He probably would’ve spent his life plodding along as a low-ranking scribe until he died aboard The Saint’s Humility, had fate (presumably cackling madly) not intervened. By pure accident, Novus stumbled onto a terrible secret that had festered on the ship for years, possibly decades. The adept doesn’t speak about what he found or what happened next; if pressured, he might mumble something about a cult while his eyes blink haphazardly and his throat tightens, but only a few people know more than that, most of them having been involved in the matter. He also won’t say how he acquired some fairly nice weaponry and armor, or how he escaped the ship—the first person to leave in multiple lifetimes. Most of all, he won’t say what he fears may be hunting him from planet to planet.

That fear has slightly dimmed in recent months now that he’s in the firm grip of Inquisitor Kadis Valle. Novus would prefer a patron who viewed him as less disposable and didn’t send him on dangerous errands beyond her sphere of protection, but he’s too indebted to refuse now. At least her fearsome reputation, and his own pseudo-authority as an Acolyte, might give his shadowy enemies a little pause. That’s the most cheerful thing he can tell himself to get an hour or so of sleep before his nightmares chase him awake.

Mouse had it, but not with us anymore, so I guess there wouldn't be a problem.

EDIT: As before, I'll stick to Blue for Severus' speech.

To answer Calimos' other questions, since I didn't really have a way to work them into that update...

You have been provided with a pict-record of Viator Raltus. It's just a face shot, but that's the important bit.

The course of your investigation has been left up to you. Your objectives are to find and, if possible, detain Viator for questioning. You are also to ascertain his reason for coming to Klybo. Once you've finished, it's expected that you will transfer out the same way you got in - by hitching a ride with the Navy.

Cool, I'll post IC soon, after I've paged through the book and selected XP expenditures. Should have something up by tomorrow afternoon, EST. Sorry for the delay.

    Perhaps he didn't ask Severus.
Back on Sepheris Secundus (and prior to Gabriel's entrance to the game) Severus had participated in a regicide game with one of the priests in the cathedral, Brother Giskard, and he was quite good at it.

    No worries.

And besides, Severus can't cheat yet. If and when we advance to our next career rank and gets to choose a Discipline, alongside Psy Rating 3, well...everything is possible. Given his personal disposition towards the ecclesiarchy and the other acolytes in the cell, though, I doubt he'd ever do that.

If you want to identify any of the more unusual junk on offer in the market, it'll be a simple skill test. Forbidden Lore (Archeotech) or (Adeptus Mechanicus) might be able to tell you something, or you can use Tech-Use, but with a -10 penalty on the roll. If you want to use any other skills, let me know.

I already rolled Common Lore (Tech) this scene, so it seems unfair to do it again unless you're ok with it. Or unless you just want to let my previous roll carry over.

Track won't be too useful until you can acquire a starting point - right now, you don't know where on the station Viator started from, or where he's been.

Anyways, Than passed his tech-use roll, so an update shall be forthcoming.

EDIT: Update's up. Also, I should probably ask, what are you trying to head for? There would be signs stenciled on the wall for things like 'docking authority,' 'administration' and the like, so tell me what you're trying to find.

We could probably start with the docking authorities, if the others agree too, in order to inquire about any information regarding Viator Raltus. The same could be done with Administration as well. After we deal with the resident authorities - as Thanatos suggested if I recall correctly - we could continue further investigation of the outpost, as suggested by Sentinel, and also ask those desperate merchants, as suggested by Artemis.

Being still in "merchant row" I think Severus could make an attempt of inquiry on the presence and whereabouts of our man. Will probably use my psychic power "Trusting Aura" to enhance my chances at successful interaction. I'll put up an IC post shortly.
