The monk spends some time checking their prisoner's bindings, then puts a separate rope around his legs as a precaution should he prove slippery enough. Sitting crosslegged, he contemplates for a long time how to go about this. He abhors torture, and surely the goblin won't be cooperative towards his view.

Maybe he'd have to adjust his own view. Logic works by applying set rules to given premises to arrive at valid conclusions. If he takes on premises compatible with the goblin's belief set and steers their discourse towards a desirable end this could go somewhere.

Satisfied with the potential of this approach Tironius wakes up their prisoner, giving him a moment to focus before speaking. He stands before the sitting goblin, displaying a position of strength and dominance. "Maglubiyet bless your sword arm, warrior. I bested you in direct combat. Your possessions are my rightful price, and your life belongs to me."

The archer squints up at Tironius, then spends a minute looking around at the campsite and the bodies of his fellows. Whatever he was seeking, he seems to have found it, for he nods and looks back to his captor. "So't would seem," he replies in thickly accented Common, although he clearly isn't happy with the situation.

Maglubiyet teaches proving one's superiority through victory in combat, and the hobgoblin culture in particular has adapted this into a regular practice of slave-taking. While roving bands will usually keep their slave quotas low, due to the trouble of feeding them, at least a few can usually be found with them to take care of menial tasks. This particular hobgoblin is likely assuming that you intend to do the same with him.

"I'll be honest, I'm not sure yet what to do with you", Tironius says, putting his hands behind his back and looking into the distance to the west, like the goblin isn't even worth it to be met eye to eye. "Your performance was not impressive, but maybe not all that much removed from decent. Perhaps there's a better use for you than cleaning pots and shoveling horse droppings. If I can trust you with better steel than a pitchfork in your hand that is." He pauses, giving the captive a moment to cling to this measure of hope. "Tell me little one, can I do that at some point or will you just stab me in the back and run off to your old masters?"

The hobgoblin looks somewhat incredulous, squinting up at Tironius suspiciously. "Y'd make me gelwyndn, w'ld ya?" His eyes twitch back and forth for several seconds as he weighs his options, and he mutters something you probably wouldn't have caught even if you did speak the language.

    Gwern:
    Spoiler
    Show
It was not, to be fair, the sort of task you could have seen coming, but that did not make it any less disconcerting. Safeton had become a haven befitting its name, the only town on the Woolly Bay to have a temple to the Witch Goddess, and your home for many months. Father Czeln asked little regarding your previous life, seeing you as a suitable and proper member of the clergy, and claiming that was all that mattered. He was nearing sixty, and although formal and often strict, was not usually one for quiet contemplation, so it might have been a warning sign when he awoke one morning in a state of remove, took breakfast without a word, and spent the rest of the day in thoughtful silence.

"Gwern." It was almost the first word he'd spoken to you that day, yet with just that he seemed almost to return to his usual self. "I have a task for you. Walk with me."

Another minute passed in silence before you emerged into the temple's empty courtyard, carefully tended ivy and creepers covering every surface not intended for use. "I dreamed last night, and remembered. This is unusual. The dream was clear, easily followed if not easily understood; were I not inclined to caution, I would have called it a vision as soon as I woke. But I have considered it in full, and I will do so now. Listen, and remember."

"The day ends, a black sun setting against a blue sky, and the ground turns to stone where it lands. Two people from the town go forth to the stone; one looks down, and sees the sun, hidden inside the rock. He does not move but to laugh in madness. The other looks up, and the stone rises to meet his gaze, but as he rises with it, it does not stop until there is a pillar to the sky, balanced on its weakest point."
Father Czeln stops in his walk, turning his back to an ivy-covered pillar and steepling his fingers. "That was all I saw. The town, I recognized from many, many years ago, when the fall of Serten brought us all to Hommlet to escort his body to a more suitable place of rest. The town is no longer quite as I remember it, but that was where I stood in the dream."

"But I am no longer of an age to travel. I am sending you in my stead; you have proven capable and knowledgeable. Find the 'black sun,' Gwern, and what magic it holds. The Stern Lady places some importance on it; I know not why, and it is not my place to question, nor yours. Hommlet is several days' travel to the west; take the road to Narwell, and then continue through the Welkwood. You know of Emridy Meadows, and the great Temple that was cast down? I cannot say for certain where you will find the black sun, but it must be near Hommlet, and the fortifications from that time are where I would start looking."

Now you are well out of the Welkwood, and there is not yet any sign of Hommlet ahead. The forest has pulled away from the road to the south, and rolling plains stretch away to the north. The journey has been pleasantly quiet thus far, so it is something of a surprise when Beauty's ears perk up and she turns her head to the side attentively. After a moment, you realize that the muffled noise at the edge of your perception is a conversation taking place on the other side of a small rise to the right.

At the sound of voices, Gwern sits up the saddle a little straighter, patting the side of Beauty's neck with a gauntleted hand, and grips his reins a little more tight, steering the horse in the direction of the sounds. He's not expecting an ambush - ambushers don't usually make you the courtesy of warning you by talking amongst themselves - but it wouldn't hurt to be prepared.

Whoever looks in his direction when he gets out the cover provided from the rise will see a man wearing a full plate armour and riding a brown warhorse. He has a Morningstar to his side and is carrying a heavy shield. Around his neck, there is a silver pendant which to a closer inspection would look a bit like a skull covered in flames. His face is concealed by a full helm, but when he sees the group, he brings one hand up and lifts the visor, revealing a pair of brown eyes and quite a few locks of brown hair falling on his forehead.

He slows his horse down and assesses the scene, keeping his hands at a safe distance from his weapons. "Greetings" he says, simply. Politeness never hurts, when you don't know who you are dealing with. Even his parents used to say that.

The butt of his staff from a willow's heartwood resting on the ground with deceptive casualty, Tironius watches the traveler come closer. For once, he silently appreciates the racial prejudice Cecily was so enraged about. A human captive lying beaten and bound at his feet would probably draw more suspicion than the hobgoblin. The traces of dirt and blood from travel and battle soiling his black robes wouldn't help matters either.

"Greetings, traveler. I recognize your symbol." What he ommits is that this doesn't necessarily put him at ease. Wee Jas has aspects he can approve of and others where he can't. "I am Brother Tironius of the faith of Delleb. What brings you to these dangerous parts on your own?"

Gwern shifts minutely, uncomfortably. The conversation has already become a bit more personal than what he would have liked. The Cadeyrns didn't train him to mask his emotions for nothing, though "I am directed towards Hommlet on an assignment on behalf of my Temple" he answers, formally.

Delleb. Delleb is one of the honourable ones, or so he has studied. He relaxes a bit "My name is Gwern" he adds. And he might as well ask the same question, since the conversation has already moved from the 'neutral greeting to show non-hostility' that he had originally intended. "May I inquire the same from you? What brings you on the road with such an...unusual prisoner?" Unusual in the sense that he is still alive. In Gwern's admittedly limited experience, goblinoids aren't the sort of opponent you usually refrain from killing.

"Why don't we go talk over there", Tironius says, raising his arm in the direction of the pleasant shadow of a tree conveniently ouside the goblin's range of hearing.

"We are here to see about the dangers I mentioned. A temple dedicated to an ancient and mighty evil is nearby. The evil and its worshippers have been struck down twice, and now the ruins are home to a group of hobgoblins preying on innocent traders and travelers on the road. They see no moral or legal wrong in this; if the humans fail to secure the roads then their banditry is the just consequence. I am afraid a violent solution is the only redress and we came to facilitate that as you might have guessed from the race of our prisoners as well as the other corpses over there. One less raiding party, although I can't speak yet for how many more might remain." He leans his staff against the tree to put Gwern further at ease, although so far it didn't seem necessary.

"If you travel further you would also do well to avoid Nulb. An abandoned ghost town plagued by undead spectres. We already banished two of them, and a third seems mostly harmless, but more might yet remain."

Hrolf moves to join the other two, although he stands where he can also see their captive. Gwern sees a dwarven wizard, with streaks of grey in his beard and an unsettled look on his face. A faint sheen of magical armor hovers around his form.

"As my comrade says, our captive is but one of many, and we are few. There's no help to be found nearby, and the caravan I was traveling with was destroyed by the hobgoblins - they have a potent spell-caster with them, one much more powerful than I."

He goes silent for a moment, his eyes losing focus briefly.

"We need help to take them on."

Gwern dismounts, leading Beauty in the shadow of the tree the robed human has pointed out to him. He takes his helmet off completely as well - as a gesture of goodwill - revealing even more messy brown locks on a not quite youthful, not quite old face.

"I thank you for the advice, brother Tironius. I will keep away from Nulb" he says with a small bow.

He turns to the dwarf when he speaks. Short, hairy, disgusting things is the comment that reflexively passes through his head, in a voice that sounds distinctively like his father's. He banishes the thought - he knows that is just a load of crap, it's just difficult to go past the conditioning, sometimes. "I'm afraid I can't help with your predicament. I have a mission of my own to fulfil."

"Although" he adds "If your quest should bring you to Emridy Meadows, and the old temple, that is where I am directed myself."

Gwern visibly tenses. "That, I am afraid, is a matter between my superiors and me." He answers, in a slightly colder tone. He certainly is not going to disclose the details of his mission to a couple of strangers. Not that there are a lot of details to disclose: Father Czern has been frustratingly vague.

"If the temple you speak of is the same I mentioned I am sure you will find the goblins rather uncooperative towards whatever business you intend. They are civilized enough to parley in peace, but more I wouldn't expect from them."

"Deliver him to lawful authority", Tironius answers immediately, having given the matter prior thought. "He will probably face trial for participation in and support of robbery and murder. He currently assumes I intend to bring him into slavery, but that was a mere bluff to coerce him into revealing information." His voice stays level throughout, showing no hint of emotion or uncertainty. When their visitor turns to go he picks up the staff again, letting it rest on his right shoulder.

Gwern gives a nod and an almost-smile of approval, obviously satisfied with the answer. He probably wouldn't have intervened even if their plans were different - the goblin is after all, their prisoner - but it pleases him that the human isn't cosidering murder.

He quirls an eyebrow at the mention of information to be gathered: if there are hobgoblins in the old temple it's possible that this is information he wants to hear as well. Which brings him to stop the motion of putting his helmet back, and considering his next words very carefully.

"A good plan, it seems" he answers, then, with a slight smirk "If I may offer my services, I believe the sight of a fully armoured human might be of aid with the interrogation?". Not to mention, he has some experience with intimidating prisoners. Not that those two strangers need to know that, obviously.

The monk contemplates the suggestion for a long moment, gears turning fast inside his head. "I'm not sure armor or no armor will make a difference given his situation. However, your faith might help. His understanding of loyalty to the other hobgoblins may be stronger than the fear of slavery or even death. However, the threat of having his corpse turned into an undead abomination might have a stronger effect." Tironius puts an emphasis on the word 'threat', giving clear thresholds on how far he is willing to go in this interrogation.

The bound hobgoblin watches you silently as you approach, eyeing the newcomer warily. He gives no sign that he recognizes Gwern's symbol, but given the three corpses nearby, presumably his former fellows, perhaps his ignorance is a blessing. Still, he seems remarkably comfortable with the situation; Tironius's earlier overtures appear to have put him on familiar ground.

Gwern approaches the prisoner, trying to recall and put in practice all those lessons from long ago on how a proper cleric of Nerull is supposed to act when confronting a lesser being. He composes his expression into one of mild distaste, focusing on an undefined point a bit above the hobgoblin's eyebrows. "I have been informed that you might have information that I seek" He says, in a very calm, low tone. He remembers his grandfather saying you should never raise your voice. The threat should be implied, instead of stated, and a low voice is a sign of being secure in one's authority.

Watching with halflidded eyes Tironius leans back against the trunk of the tree, arms crossed. From his reactions the hobgoblin doesn't seem more cooperative than before. Perhaps... perhaps a way would be to not directly talk to the goblin, but to let him listen in on something that would make him beg to be helpful. The beginning of a plan, refined from the proposed earlier bluff, forms in his mind. He would have to rely on the priest being able to improvise and play along, but it seems promising.

He gives Gwern some more moments to talk to the prisoner, then pushes off the tree and go over to the pair with quick, impatient strides. "So, like what you see?" He roughly pulls the goblin to his feet and squeezes his arm muscles, then gives him a rough tap on the chest. "Archer and a horseman. Stronger than the raw bulk suggests. Well experienced, so on him I charge more than the three over there. Fifty a piece for those, a hundred for the living one. Might have other uses to your kind since he still breathes, but it honestly doesn't concern me necromancer. Armor and weapons are not included in the package, but I'll make a bargain price. Buy all four and I throw in a mule for transport, assuming you don't want to animate them on the spot."

Gwern keeps his face as inscrutable as he can, despite the urge to smirk in amusement when Tironius outlines his "proposal". If that's how the monk wants to play it, he can certainly comply. Not like he hasn't any experience to draw upon on the matter. Deliberately, he lets his gaze go up and down the tied hobgoblin as if assessing his physical qualities before considering a purchase, then he moves his eyes towards the three corpses. "I'll have to examine the other bodies, but I can already see they were mishandled. I don't much care for damaged ones." he says, still in a calm, almost bored voice. Which, incidentally, is true - the more damaged the corpse, the more of a pain it is to work with. He brings his gaze back on the living prisoner. "This one at least still looks reasonably intact, and it might be a useful source of information... but if that's not the case, I'm afraid his value isn't much more than the other ones. Twenty five for the deads, seventy for the living. They're nor worth more than that."

Drawing back slightly, the hobgoblin turns his head to glare at Tironius with something resembling disbelief. "Y'd make me gelwyndn, w'ld ya," he spits, "'n then turn 'round and sell me to this... this?" Pointing an accusatory finger is somewhat beyond his current range of movement, but the disgust in his eyes is clear enough as he glances toward Gwern.

"The damage isn't that bad. Arrows leave little enough mark to concern you, most of the rest was blunt impact from my limbs. But fine, I'll go down to twentyfive on the one that had his neck snapped, but not the others.
Really, hobgoblins are quality material. Strong teeth."
He forces the goblin's jaws apart, turning his head left and right, up and down to let Gwern inspect. "Go for a bity thing and he'll rend the flesh from your enemies like a rabid wolf. Ninety, and that's a bargain."
He finally gives the prisoner time to react, slowly turning on him with a condescension in his mien like someone who's just been disturbed by a filthy piece of cattle. "What's the meaning of this gelwydn? With the state of the economy I have to get whatever use out of you I can. I planned on getting more merchandise, but I had my doubts concerning your cooperation."

"Gelwyndn..." the hobgoblin pauses a moment, searching for words. "Blade-servant, y'ld say." He tries to shake off Tironius's hand, looking between his interlocutors as though he still can't quite believe his situation. "How d'y'call on Maglubiyet n'then deal in the dead after?"

"I see no contradiction. They may lack valor in the traditional sense, but they follow orders to the letter and are unyielding. More a weapon than a soldier." He lets go of the goblin and takes a step out of his personal space. "It's more a matter of opportunity and necessity. I need enough force to take on all comers and I will only subject my enemies to this, not those who serve me. I will take over the temple, the current leader is unworthy of his title, a mere bandit where he should be a warlord. Those sharing this vision will join me. Will you be my blade-servant, or just cattle?" He gives the goblin a stern look, knowing this is the moment of truth where his ploy will either work out or fail.

The archer looks away uncomfortably, speaking softly. "...Eisn's chosen. He'll not fall so easy, e'en if y'do use the dead."

    "But so be't."
He looks back at you, wearily. "I'm y'r sheld, e'en if y'go for Eisn. Long as't means y'leave me lie when I die shelding ye."
