It's also a font, but the font takes its name from the country. Now, practically no one calls the country by that name to start with. We generally refer to it as Switzerland instead.
Also, fonts have such a wide variety of names. I can't be entirely certain that I won't be giving any future kids the same name as a font by pure accident...Clouddreamer Teddy by me, high above the world, far beyond its matters...

Ariel is the mermaid.
Helvetica is a font.
Arial is the bastard font of Helvetica, created with just enough differences to avoid royalty fees.
No, really, it's pretty darn close.
Arial is the primary font on most Windows PCs.
Helvetica is the primary font on most Macintosh PCs.
Hipster Ariel is Ariel with those thick black rimmed glasses making hipster comments.
Hipster Helvetica is taking Hipster Ariel one step further.Last edited by Rawhide; 2012-12-20 at 01:18 AM. Reason: Typo

Re: Amidus Drexel's Alliterative and Awe-Accentuating Anvil of Random Banter CLXXXVI
Yesssssss, so so so close to finishing my paper... I'll hand it in tomorrow morning! And then how banter shall thrive! There are posts I want to respond to like six pages back now.
And yet Helvetica is the correctly formed adjective derived from that name, i.e. "Scriptura Helvetica," the writing of Helvetia. The font takes its name from that country, which is what Teddy said.

Font-wise, I'm rather partial to Calibri myself.

Re: Amidus Drexel's Alliterative and Awe-Accentuating Anvil of Random Banter CLXXXVI
Phew, 4 and a half hour of sleep, and then an exam. All because I was stupid enough to light my bedside lamp before actually making sure that it was time to get up. It's funny how impossible it suddenly gets to go back to sleep when you actually have time to do so...
Oh well, the exam went splendid, apart from the third to last question, which told me to explain the difference between inheritance and aggregation, the latter being a concept that was quite heavily glossed over in the very first lab we had, and then mentioned just about never again (and certainly not in the slides). Well, at least my grade won't be threatened by this...
Also, there were quite a lot of stupid errors in the exam. Apart from some simple spelling errors, they told us to write an equals method for "the personclass" [/liberal translation shenanigans], when the code they presented to us (to work on) was for a class named Book. And in the very next question, they give us code to a method named return, despite the fact that return is a keyword in Java that can't be used in method names. The code wouldn't even pass compilation!
All in all, I must say that it didn't look all too prefessional. Or at least not like something a professional actually spent a sufficient amount of time on putting together...
ION:
I've got all my Christmas shopping done for now. The last piece was a Donald Duck book, preferably with Don Rosa, which I was hunting down for littlest brother. There is a comic store in my town, but I've never set my foot inside it before. Nevertheless, I knew that if there was anywhere I should turn in my search, then it was there, and I turned out to be correct. I'd barely gotten through the door before I found exactly what I was looking for. The feeling of a swift and total success is quite hard to beat.
Now I just need to do a bit of wrapping and I'm all done for the 24th.

Re: Amidus Drexel's Alliterative and Awe-Accentuating Anvil of Random Banter CLXXXVI
Congratulations on your perseverance.
That may be the case, but it still does not change the fact that Switzerland has never been referred to as Helvetica.
There's nothing wrong with Times New Roman. It is a more than acceptable font suitable for numerous uses.
Though I have to admit, I forgot this thing offers Book Antiqua...Mauve Shirt, Savannah, Gnomish Wanderer, Cuthalion and Smuchmuch get cookies for making me avatars. (::)

Re: Amidus Drexel's Alliterative and Awe-Accentuating Anvil of Random Banter CLXXXVI
You're probably right (if you discount the times I did so ). Confśderatio Helvetica, however...
This is my main problem with most of the serif fonts on this forum: they get way too cluttered.
Hmm, I wonder...
As I thought, it looks better when enlarged. Although a size of 2.5 would've been more optimal...
Also, I can barely see any difference between them two. Is there any, or is ClearType just messing with my eyes?Clouddreamer Teddy by me, high above the world, far beyond its matters...

correct, the classical roman name for Switzerland is Helvetia, not Helvetica

Aaargh! My favourite online dictionary suddenly went missing. If things don't get back on track soon, expect my English to drop to truly substandard levels.

How jet lagged and tired was I yesterday? Enough that I managed to fall asleep for eight hours after drinking a big mug of extra strong coffee. It feels good to be able to get sleep for the first time since August.

In that form it's being used as the Swiss Confederation, not Confederation of Switzerland.

Re: Amidus Drexel's Alliterative and Awe-Accentuating Anvil of Random Banter CLXXXVI
My computer defaults to Calibri or Cambria, depending on if the bit of text is marked as a heading or body. This is good because Cambria is slightly larger than Times New Roman, which as far as I can tell would otherwise be the default serif font. Thus, a two-page paper it's shorter. Teacher never thought of mandating a particular font, just a size.

I have no preference for font, honestly. If I was doing something that required font having, I'd entrust someone else to pick a good font. As long as it's clear and readable, it's good.
