Default The Balance Shifts - OoC

Welcome to the Out of Character for the 21st level game I'm DMing. Chat, goof off, speculate that that mustache guy will betray you, talk tactics, plan, ask me to clarify things, etc. I am compiling as much stuff as I can in this post so I'll be a good reference post. Everyone post the links to your sheet(s) and choose color(s) to post in.

    Below is various useful stuff.

    Posting:
    Spoiler
    Show
Try to post at least once per day as long as there is something to post, more often if you have can. If you don't post for three days straight in combat, someone else will act for you (me, unless another player wants to). If an idea is proposed and no-one voices objection within three days, i'll presume that you're all going along with it (if I remember).

When you post, structure them with OoC [out of character] stuff spoiler it with a heading of OoC. Dice rolls in spoilers unless it is something that makes sense to include IG (Summoning 1d3 hippogriffs to attack someone could have the roll code in the post there if you say something like "and 1d3 hippogriffs appear diving at the foe, slashing with there claws"). If your doing some roll completely OoC, such as forgetting to include a knowledge/spellcraft check, post it here, clearly stating what it is. The same goes for saves and other rolls that happen on your turn unless you want to type something about what your doing IC.

Everyone should pick a color to speak in. Use italics in that color for thoughts you post. NPCs will post in Bold, important ones might gets a Color and/or a font too. (Some may get a color and/or font later, once you realize they are important).

If there is a spoiler with a player/character's name above it which isn't your character/player's name, don't read it, it is meant to be private. If I make a spoiler with a title like "Spot (DC 15):" Don't open it unless you successfully make the check, they may have spoilers within the spoilers with increasing difficulty, if that is so, don't open the further spoilers unless your roll also would reach that DC.

    The World(s):
    Spoiler
    Show
The world is much like standard D&D cosmology, with a few differences. There are multiple Material Planes, most say the one they're on is the prime, though really, no-on knows, some speculate that the overdeities and other great powers live on the Prime, the first place in the universe, and blocked it off from all intrusion, others say that is completely made up and anyone who believes that is crazy (if your from a material plane, you could be from different ones if you wish, or the same, doesn't really matter seeing as your in the Outlands now).

For specific things, assume it is somewhere, it may be hard to find, but there is a frostfell, and evil empire, etc. This will be a sandbox, and considering your epic and the multiverse is your oyster, I think it'd be easier if instead of planning places you may never visit, make things up as it goes, this means that you can through knowledge checks learn basic information about pretty much anything.

    The 16:

    1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?

D&D, 3.5, most 3.0 material is allowed, ask me first though.

    2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?

    Homebrew world.

    3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?

4-8, if more people are interested, I'll probably let you in, though after around 8 people post interest, I'll probably close it.

    4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?

    The forums.

    5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?

Minimum EXP for 21st level, gestalt.

    6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?

    Standard WBL.

    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?

Run homebrew like me, I prefer short and sweet homebrew thats easy to understand to long complex things.

    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?

    Same as above.

    9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?

5d6b3 six times, if you don't like that, you can use a 40 point-buy. Max HP at first level, roll if you roll under the average for any die, you can take that instead.

    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?

Any, though I hope you can work together, if you want a more PvP/solo game, I'd be fine with that, as long as everyone else is.

    11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?

    Free multi classing.

    12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?

Use the forums, rolls that don't have an IC description go OoC. Put rolls in spoilers unless it would direct fit in a description (summoning 1d3 elementals).

    13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.

Not that I can think of.

    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?

Background explaining motivations and how you got this strong.

    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?

Depends on what you make it.

    16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?

All 3.5 books, request 3.0 stuff, I'll probably allow it. Homebrew by request.

Tell me if I missed anything, and check the 16 before asking questions.

I'd rather PCs don't speak in bold to prevent confusion. You could use a font like Arial Black to simulate it though.

Thanks, will Kil'Anthar/your Psicrystal have there own colors (I'd be okay with it being black as long as they have some way to distinguish themselves from normal text, maybe bold or something).

EDIT: Added ginger ninja. Also, I think I missed this before, but how do you have a +5 inherent bonus to all stats for around 250k GP.

I'm here! I tried to write everything I had in mind for Sthena out in one go, and now I must admit that I'm incredibly tired- so please forgive any poor spelling or writing that shows up in the background below.

    Sthena will speak in red.

    Ten Minute Background:
    Spoiler
    Show
    Important Elements

Sthena was born with strange powers that defied the understanding of priests and magi, but though she could find no mentor, it would not be denied. As she slept, it shaped her dreams, weaving strange landscapes and gradually growing in strength under her subconscious control. Though Sthena has never had formal training, her every dream has taught her how to wield her psychic powers.

Though she was once a half-elf, Sthena left behind that mortal form long ago, having been too deeply touched by the Realm of Dreams to remain as she once was. She can no longer truly recall how precisely she came to her current form, however- the surreal nature of her transformation and journey have given her many conflicting impressions and memories on the subject. Indeed, she is unsure if it is more blessing or curse, or whether it was something she sought, or had inflicted upon her. Her body is a strange one, reminiscent of snake and dragon, human and monster in equal measure, and altogether otherworldly and fantastic.

Possessed of a rather mercurial temperament, it can be difficult to ascertain how Sthena will respond or react. She wavers between brash and cautious without warning, and is restlessly energetic and calmly contemplative in erratic turns. There are few solid points to her nature, but she is often possessed of a good heart and almost always rails against restrictions.

Due to her peculiar habits and appearance, Sthena has a rather nightmarish reputation. While to some hunting fiends might be a laudable task, Sthena's particular enthusiasm and methods in doing so leaves many disturbed and at times, even fearful for their lives. The only fortunate side of this is that demons and devils are as terrified of her reputation as the common folk are.

Sthena is a planar traveler, rarely staying in one place for long, or being content to rest anywhere. She travels as the mood strikes her and has experienced many things during her journeys, and seen many more.

    Goals

While to many Sthena's powers are terrifying as they are, Sthena remains unsatisfied with them. For all her strength, her skills still do not compare to the awesome control she has within her dream realm. When she can learn to manifest that realm without herself, to control the world around her as easily as she can her dreams- then at least she will be pleased with her progress.

The full creation of Sthena's dream world, as a place that could be visited and explored, could make for a very interesting character reward as well as a place to experience.

    People

Within the world of her dream, there has been a constant figure that has guided Sthena, daring her to do more, deconstructing and reconstructing her perceptions via imagery and explanation to give her a broader and keener understanding of her power and the world. This figure has been a mentor to her, someone she sees as something of an ideal... and yet, Sthena is even now not fully certain of whether or not this person exists outside her own mind. "Else" is the only name she has to call the enigmatic woman.

The Devil Prince Volerce has particular grievance with Sthena, as Sthena slew her earthly body. Though the devil reforms in her hellish palace of scale and bone, she resents the inconvenience and her pride rankles- for it is said that all serpents must obey her command, and thus to have such a being as Sthena defy her is a double insult. Though she is currently confined to her plane as she reforms, she musters her forces and powers against Sthena.

Five Unfolding Flames is an ancient crimson dragon who once pitted his arcane might against the psychic skills of Sthena in lethal contest. He would have won, if he so desired, but ultimately he decided she was more amusing alive, and so spared her. In truth, Sthena is not quite sure what to make of the old dragon- he is clearly a being of enormous power, yet he tends to spend his time pursuing minor amusements over advancing his own strength or lofty goals. More often than not, when she meets him it is for the competition of a board game, or mere idle chatter. She also can't shake the feeling that his morality is fairly questionable, if only due to his cynicism and almost nihilistic pessimism (even if he does express his views with an amusing dry wit).

    Distinctive Elements

Sthena is very fond of cleverness with language and words, and so has an interest in riddles, rhymes, poetry, and similar works. While not particularly skilled in such fields herself, she appreciates the work of others.

"There is always a circle." It is not an absolute law, but Sthena feels sure that the world tends to works in patterns and with repetition. When she is uncertain or suspicious, her logic often falls back onto this theory, and tries to work from there.

Every night, as she trains her powers in unfathomable ways, Sthena explores and adds to her dreamscape. Over countless years of this training, her personal realm of dreams has become something strange and fantastic to behold.

    Secrets

For all the kindness she has in her, and all the good she does, Sthena feels a certain amount of pleasure in being terrifying and monstrous. There is just something about it that she finds incredibly satisfying in a way that nothing else is. She tries to vent it in her efforts against fiends, but sometimes she finds it slips out elsewhere.

Five Unfolding Flames actually played a significant, though accidental, role in the formation of Sthena's current body and identity, and maintains a powerful (if discreet) presence within the Realm of Dreams. Sthena suspects something of the sort given the dragon's almost paternal interest in her affairs and the unique similarities in the coloration and patterns of their scales, but has never quite broached the subject with him. Flames never intends to bring it up.

A young woman sits at the centre of a table in bar, her back to the wall, surrounded on both sides by men. Her face might be called beautiful by most standards, with her brilliant red hair, amber eyes and smooth skin, but it is a hard kind of beauty. She has a strong jaw line, and her shoulders are broad beneath her blue and black mottled tunic. Her strong forearms are bare from the elbow. She drains the tankard she is holding in her right hand, and commands “Another!” She drains it again. When she replaces the tankard on the table, the barman is standing opposite her, holding a spiked club.
“If you aren’t going to pay for your drinks, lady, you can drink elsewhere. I won’t have no magic cups in my inn.” He slams the butt of the club on the table aggressively.
“Now lad, I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” the woman says, gently tapping the blade of a knife on the table with her left hand, a hand that had been empty a blink before.
“When Brian leaves the girl out back with a sore head, I’m sure she’d welcome my company, know what I’m saying?” mutters a man across the room. He reaches for his bottle of cheap wine. It shatters as his hand closes around the neck. The woman’s knife lands back in her palm, her hand still resting on the tabletop.
Amid the splutters and roars from the other table, Brian looks nervously at the knife. “Alright,” he says, “drink all you want, but you’ll have to find some other place to sleep.”
Laughing huskily, the woman raises her tankard. “Last one I drink under gets to give me a place to sleep tonight, unnerstand lads?”

Aoife o’Floinn was born on an island village off the southern coast of Tethyr. Once the villagers had been beset by wild beasts and monsters, but her elven great-grandfather had cleansed the island with his twin swords, and settled there, founding a family with the most grateful of the village girls. Aoife was never happy with the prospect of a quiet rustic life, but her decision to leave the island was spurred after she met and had a brief tryst with a Nymph named Diana, whose stories gave her a taste for adventure and the world beyond the island. She set off travelling with her great-grandfather’s swords, Gortaigharbour and Tapaclaiomh. She picked up her skills on the fly, learning from other warriors she met on the road, even from enemies she fought and defeated. She had carried a boot knife most of her life, and had always been a good throw with it, but she really began to consider the potential of thrown weapons when she hurled her sword into the back of a fleeing bandit. But throwing a weapon over-arm into a man’s back is one thing – throwing a sword in true combat is a near-mystical skill. Luckily for Aoife, she had already heard stories of the Bloodstorm Guild. She swore her oath to them and learned from them, then returned to her travels. She never took her oath especially seriously, but she enjoyed the companionship of other Bloodstorm Blades whenever she met one, sharing Guild news over a drink or eight.

For a while, Aoife worked with a mercenary guild, but changed the team she was working with regularly. A series of romantic involvements, some lasting only a single night after a nearly fatal battle, others lasting a few months and forged through long time together, inevitably ended badly as she, naturally flighty, moved on, and the sour air between her and her ex-partners ruined her enjoyment of danger and exploration. Somehow the other Bloodstorm Blade members had never seemed to care as much about her lack of commitment.

Aoife eventually stopped working with the mercenaries, having by long practise become a whirling storm of steel, hurling her twin swords across battlefields with perfect precision, and never missing a catch as they returned. She was spending time with some old Bloodstorm friends when they came across a lone practioner of the Bloodstorm style, not a member of the Blades, holding off an attack by githyanki blade-masters. Aoife swept into the fight, and the other Bloodstorm Blades helped her reluctantly, worried they were looking at the end of their uneasy truce with the githyanki.
Luckily Aoife left no survivors, and the githyanki never found out about her actions, but she holds a personal hatred of them for greedily protecting their techniques and murdering outsiders who learned them, and she seeks to stop their plans when she can do so without endangering the other members of the Guild, who don’t deserve to face the githyanki’s anger. The man she saved turned out to be a weapons master, a thrown weapon specialist who had simply picked up a few Bloodstorm techniques. In return for Aoife’s sponsorship to join the Bloodstorm Blades and teaching him more of their techniques, Master Sakratters taught her more about the art of thrown weapons then she had ever understood from the Bloodstorms, who were little more than focussed amateurs by comparison. Before they parted, she spent a while with Sakratters at the elven court, and surprisingly learnt a great deal about courtly etiquette and politics, though unbeknown to most she was turning her skills in disguise, forgery and pick-pocketing into formidable weapons in the game of elven politics.

But Aoife isn’t good at staying in one place long, and she left the elven court after a couple of years. Taking with her a fey gem which its former owner might or might not have implied Aoife could have, she began to travel by herself for a while. Sometimes she’d use the gem to change Plane each day, just to see new sights and meet new people, and never quite knowing where she’d end up. She fell into lakes, chasms and trouble on several occasions, but always sauntered out and carried on travelling. She fought a lot, drank a lot, and slept little. Those who think they know what it means to travel hard haven’t travelled with Aoife o’Floinn in recent years. An hour’s sleep is generally enough for her, and stopping to eat can become such a drag, she sometimes sustains herself by drinking beer while on the move for days on end. If it’s out there to see, she’s probably seen it by now. But after all that time adventuring alone, she’s finally decided she wants some company again, at least for a while.

    Personality:

    Show
Aoife loves fighting, drinking, singing (especially bawdy or wild songs), travelling and meeting new people. She doesn’t respond well to rules, delays, obstacles and negative emotions. She especially tends to run from the last of these, as she doesn’t know how to face shame or take criticism from others, and nor does she enjoy hurting them. She has recently discovered a passion for, as she sees it, the game of court politics, happily playing the rule-free sport to support those whose aims she agrees with and bring down threats to the elven court. She will often sing a chant or rhyming couplet when she uses one of her special techniques, as she loves to tease her opponents. One of the few rules she feels any compulsion to uphold is the unspoken agreement of Master Throwers to resolve their disputes peacefully, or at least with non-lethal force – an extension of her general love of camaraderie and good atmosphere.

    Appearance:

Red-headed, with smooth pale skin and amber eyes, Aoife’s beauty is offset by her strong jaw, almost-manly shoulders and muscled physique. She still attracts much attention, mostly from warrior-types who love strong women, but she is no traditional beauty. A small blue tattoo on her right temple depicts a spiral with a dart at the centre, a sign to other Master Throwers. Her casual clothes are a mottled blue-and-black tunic, with many shades of blue fading into black, a loose black skirt with leggings and brown leather boots that end at her upper shins. Her tunic is belted with a black leather belt. She wears her swords at her waist, a great-sword across her back and many daggers - one in her belt, one hidden in each boot, one up each sleeve. One is strapped to the inside of her tunic. She has bracelets on both wrists, in beaten bronze and copper, and a thin sliver torc around her neck. Her wild red hair is normally left loose, but she has a bronze hair grip to pin it back if she needs to.

When armoured for combat, Aoife wears a black shadowsilk suit, which bends supplely with her movements. She has had this fashioned to look like dress armour with smart black boots, polished buckles and epaulettes, to allow her to wear it as much as possible. Armbands made of a single piece of thick, twisted bronze cord protect her forearms. The chest piece of her armour has a target with a dagger stuck in it painted on, both to mock her enemies and as another sign to other Master Throwers.
Aoife owns a loose red dress, trimmed with silver embroidery, and a collection of fine glass jewellery, which she wears when court affairs demand a more fashion-conscious approach. However, the large sleeves and flowing skirt conceal numerous weapons at all times, and her glass jewellery is fashioned so that if she needs an improvised weapon, it can be snapped to provide her with a point.

All: Everyone was approved. I hate excluding people from these games, I just try to close recruitment once enough people join.

NekoIncardine: I believe you also are missing your advanced learning healer spells. Also, what color/font will your Cohort speak in?

AmberVael: I like the background. Could you maybe put it on your sheet?

I'll PM Gem_Knight and Togo the out of character now.

Seriously, I live in the middle of no where, it's a 3-4 hour drive to the nearest con of any decent size, and I lack the driver's license, vehicle, and ability to get time off of work to get me there.

On the plus side, when I do get those things, that con happens to be AnimeExpo.

    AX is a fine con.

Corrected my previous post to include Loraonna's color, and will starting to research spells to add from Advanced Learnings once I'm on break from work.

I put a link to it on my sheet- I didn't want to stick it all there, cause it doesn't look like there is a place to put it without cluttering things up.

I've decided to name my Psicrystal:
From now on it shall go by the name of Tingle.
"You mean, more than those who believe stories of demons
being summoned, and the ultimate war of good and evil,
and barons who bathe in blood of virgins?"
"Well, yes. Didn't quite buy that?"
    "I don't believe in virgins."

    Today in Don't Overthink D&D:
Martera's 12 STR means that, in spite of her ability to have giant batlike wings that you'd think would provide propulsion in water, she's probably the worst swimmer in the party by an order of magnitude.

Her wings are water absorbent so they just slow her down. That obviously is the reason, and definitely not that D&D just doesn't account for stuff like that and thusly doesn't make sense.

The swimming rules in D&D are stupid anyway. The average person can't reasonably expect to keep their head above rough water for 6 seconds.

Confessedly, without learning how to swim, that part at least is kinda realistic. It's just considered a 'default skill' in modern times, while D&D is inspired by an era where knowing how to swim was considered bad luck amongst seafarers. (No, really.)

Yeah, except that D&D does assume you know how to swim, keeping your head above calm water is reasonably expected (and for a lot longer than 6 seconds) unless you have an armor check penalty.
