But last weekend she was all the time tired, annoyed, etc. and I decided not to disturb her. Father's reaction really surprised me, the first sentences he said were 'Mhm... Is that something wrong? Why are you so nervous? Are you telling me this because you already have a girlfriend?' Then he asked me not to worry about intolerance, because this year I'm going to study in new, bigger city and we'll see what life will bring. Hi everyone, I want to thank all of you for being so supportive and awesome, that meant a ton for me.

    -----

Update; the conversation went well, I'm getting scripts for androcur (an anti-androgen) next week by mail and I asked about the different types of E, but apparently it doesn't really make a big difference if it's properly monitored... I might also be going up on my E-supplements, depending on the results of my bloodwork. I'm still a bit unsure about Ethinylestradiol instead of estradialvalerate and people keep pointing it out so I mailed her about it with a few research papers about it but now I'm really nervous and having irrational fears like her taking away my HRT and all that. >.<

Had the stitches out of my throat today, still a bit swollen and sore but going well.

As for how the op went:

Arrive at the day surgery, wait around for a bit, get some texta on my neck, go into the operating room and have a drip put in. A minute later they gave me a sedative and I was out. Wake up a couple of hours later with a sore throat, leave about 15 minutes after that.
No real pain (it was much like a bad sore throat), only took a half dose of the painkillers they gave me (panadine forte) just before bed the first two nights to help sleep.

Had a sort of giant band-aid over the incision which was on for a week, and it was a bit hard looking left/right and up due to the stitches. Talking is ok, can get a little sore if talking for a while, but it clears up quickly. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary aside from that. Was told to avoid havy lifting and very hot foods.

Go back in five weeks and hopefully that will be all done.

HRT is going. It seems to be making me quite tired in the afternoon, and I've noticed much more emotional. Lots of crying and feeling very sad - probably didn't help that it would have been my ex-GF and I's 5 years together the other day though. Not noticed any physical changes yet.

Here's a photo from the weekend:

    Spoiler

'scuse the camera flash, makes me look even more dead than usual. I put the bandage around my neck to hide that I couldn't shave there and it was a bit bloody and ugly to look at.

So I went out in girl mode and it went well. Got a few funny looks but that could have been due to looking terminally ill or like I've had my head stitched back on or something. Though standing up from dinner was a bit alarming as my brain went "you are not wearing pants!" and I had to do a double take on that one... But was good to be out and out.
I hope it all checks out okay when you go back.

Sorry to hear about you feeling sad though. The tiredness and emotional turmoil was something that happened to me as well my first few weeks.

And I'm glad going out went well and that's a lovely picture.

Has anyone heard about this? I'm not really sure how to interpret this, because while the DSM V is problematic in a lot of ways, we basically don't know enough about biological grounds with regards to transness and I'm afraid these changes are going to screw over trans* people and other groups a lot... anyone more knowledgeable around that can shed some light on this?

A google search found this article. Not quite sure which one to believe, but I've seen quite a bit of way-too-sensationalist science 'journalism' and would hence be inclined towards the more measured article. Regardless, it doesn't look like this has specifically touched on trans issues yet. Though I'm similarly a bit paranoid.

This division is no cause for concern. This is a difference purely based on epistemology and philosophical viewpoints and is very unlikely to affect patients, laws or insurance coverage. The cause for the division is a difference in scientific viewpoints. The NIMH seems to have taken on a completely mechanistic view, while psychology in general has preferred to take on a more abstract look at the problems of the mind.

It's nature vs. nurture, in layman's terms.

The thing to remember is that even the most diehard mechanists are at least casually aware of the principles of Bioethics, the most important of which is the Principle of Autonomy. Nobody can treat you against your will (unless ordered by a court of law, and even then it depends on country, jurisdiction and jurisprudence), and no doctor can force you into a procedure you do not consent to.

That being said, there are troubling implications for a purely mechanistic look at mental health (as history has proven time and again), but it's not likely to have an adverse effect on LGBTQ+ issues, not in our current times. Whether insurance will cover things like HRT and surgery does not depend on science. Science is not prescriptive, it's descriptive. The findings that this new outlook will yield do not tell people what to do with them.

The decisions that people make are based on their preconceptions and prejudices, not on science. Science is their excuse, their rationalisation. It is equally valid to say "we should give trans* people coverage because science!" and "we should deny trans* people coverage because science!"

What we need to do is to push for what we want (coverage, for example) and debunk people misusing science to support their prejudice. We have to outsmart them, not despair and give up.

Hi, Astrella, that's really good news and glad it got sorted out easily Now hopefully the new scripts wont get lost for months on end

And thanks for the kind words - I think I look ghastly, but curiously it's just because of how the flash made me look rather than anything dysphoria-like, so that's good I suppose?

As for that psych thing, I'm not overly concerned as it's (sadly) not going to stop Trans and related issues being fringe, and even when there is extensive knowledge there are still plenty of quacks out there.

Next day he told mum about the conversation and she was also very positive. So... YAY! ^^
That's awesome! I'm glad they both took it well

Well, I don't have one actually. I have two, because we have like fifty kids in the class. But, they do a great job! At least, in my opinion.

Also, because I showed my essay to two other people and got great reactions from them, I want to share it with everyone! But, fair warning. It's very very very very very long. Feedback would be great, if anyone wants to give it.

    Wealth: The Cause of Misery
In Greek mythology, there are two goddesses that oppose each other: Tyche, the goddess
of fortune, and Nemesis, the goddess of revenge. While they constantly oppose each other, they maintain a balance of good and bad fortune, a balance that is clearly disrupted in the beginning of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, which takes place in the 1920s. The imbalance is shown by the wealthy characters in the novel, who all, in some way or another, are unhappy. The way that wealth is abused is also shown through these characters, which have lost any sense of what is right and what is wrong because of the wealth they have. Although wealth in The Great Gatsby is originally attractive, it leads to unhappiness, because the rich characters are miserable.
First, Gatsby’s wealth ultimately leads to his downfall. The most obvious way this is shown is when Tom reveals to Daisy how Gatsby actually got his money. Gatsby, panicked by this, starts to rapidly deny everything, “but with every word she was drawing further and further into herself, so he gave that up, and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible, struggling unhappily, undespairingly, toward that lost voice across the room” (134). Gatsby, whose wealth was what brought him and Daisy together, breaks them apart. When Tom reveals how Gatsby attained his wealth, it crushed Daisy, along with Gatsby’s dream of living happily with Daisy. Another example that shows this is when Nick looked at Gatsby’s house on his last night there. Nick looked at the house, and “on the white steps an obscene word, scrawled by some boy with a piece of brick, stood out clearly in the moonlight, and I erased it, drawing my shoe raspingly along the stone” (179-180). This symbolizes Gatsby’s failure at his dream, caused by his wealth. The house symbolizes Gatsby, the white steps being his dream. The obscene word represents when Tom called Gatsby a ‘bootlegger,’ and then proceeded to explain how Gatsby attained his wealth. The label taints his dream, which can be seen in Daisy’s reaction to the truth. With the removal of the word from the steps, the only thing that remains is the grand but empty house. Gatsby was a man whose wealth caused his dream to shatter and his own downfall.
Another example is Daisy, whose lust for wealth leads to her unhappiness. First, this is shown when Jordan tells Nick a story about Daisy when they are in the Plaza Hotel’s tea garden. Near the end of her story, Jordan suggests that “perhaps Daisy never went in for the amour at all – and yet there’s something in that voice of hers” (77). This shows that Daisy married Tom not for his love, but for his money. This could be the only thing that Daisy married him for, since he has no other desirable qualities in him. However, that marriage for wealth ultimately makes her unhappy. Another good example that also shows this is when Gatsby and Tom have their shouting match in the Plaza Hotel suite. Gatsby, in response to Tom’s calling of him crazy, cries out “she only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me” (130). This shows that Daisy really did marry Tom for his wealth. Upon hearing that, Tom becomes disillusioned, and Daisy, who was already distressed from the feud between Gatsby, who was her old lover, and Tom, who she has been married to for years, becomes even more distraught from it. This causes her life to become quite a mess, being torn between the two loves, old and new, or, rather, old money and new money. Daisy is a money-lusting woman whose ambitions lead to her misery.
Finally, there is Tom, whose carelessness with his wealth leads to his own unhappiness. A good example that establishes this is when it is told how Tom came by his wealth. As Tom is being described, it is said that “his family were enormously wealthy – even in college his freedom with money was a matter for reproach” (6). This shows that Tom is used to having a lot of money. With this familiarity to money, Tom’s caution with spending is almost nonexistent, which leads to him spending money without abandon. He does this to find happiness as he did in the past, but this happiness eludes his grasp. Additionally, this is shown when Jordan and Nick talk after Tom goes inside to answer the phone and Daisy excuses herself. Jordan, in an attempt to clear Nick of his confusion, tells him “Tom’s got some woman in New York” (15). This shows that Tom’s carelessness did not only stop at money, but spread to his lifestyle. Growing up rich, he got whatever he wanted that made him happy. This mentality had wormed its way into his relationships, and he finds himself with another woman, who does not make him any happier than he is with Daisy. Tom is a fool whose carelessness with his money causes great misery.
Because of this wealth, the rich characters did not achieve happiness, but rather pain and misery. Wealth throughout The Great Gatsby is portrayed as desirable and alluring. It is also displayed as a source of happiness, which is proven to be false as the wealth causes misery for all the rich characters. The book sends the message that wealth will cause misery to those who do not handle it well. It causes imbalance, and this imbalance will correct itself with misery and pain. Though the balance of good and bad fortune was disrupted in the beginning, Nemesis had balanced it in the end. It is her belief that true achievement is not won through luck, but through painful sacrifice. Sacrifice that was not found when Daisy married Tom to be rich, when Gatsby attained his fortune illegally, or when Tom inherited a massive fortune that he was careless with.

American ketchup is sugary. Irish ketchup is more tart, I think it's much better. I think a lot of places have American-style ketchup, which is not as good.

Well that does sound good, so try not to worry about your further questions too much if you can help it. Maybe she'll do some more research and decide that the other one does actually work better, or maybe she's read something you haven't seen.

Oh yeah, I heard about that. The article I read suggested a switch to like, brain scans and stuff that's really still several years off. I think what we need is a good set of diagnostic criteria (the DSM sucks, and the DSM-V is worse than the last one by most accounts) and therapists in the meantime, and more funding for neurological research so that we can understand the biology of stuff better later.

Maybe I'd like Irish ketchup better. I've only ever had American ketchup.

I think it's too early to tell. This seems to mainly impact research, so it could be some time before we know what effect it will have. As for clinical practice... it depends on what our governments do. I don't think it will impact practice in Europe - we go by ICD-10 instead (I think).
