    Question [PF]Theurge discipline (PEACH)

The following is what I proposed to a player interested in the mystic theurge concept. As you can see, the mechanic is quite bare but gets the job done. I'd like your opinion on balance and other issues that might come up.

    Focus on:
    • Evaluating the impact of the extra spells (not many) and expanded spell list
    • Pointing out exploits or loopholes, or even clever tactics
    • Proposing better mechanics in place of the arcane bond as described. State wether the held spellbook requirement makes any sense.
    • Rate balance in general and against specific examples

    Thank you in advance

    Arcane Discipline: Theurgy

Instead of specializing in a specific school of magic, a Theurge focus her studies toward divine magic, broadening her possibilities and her knowledge.

A Theurge selects two opposed schools. In return, she gains an extra spell slot. This spell slot can only be filled with a "divine" spell (see the abilities below).

Divine Awareness: Your connection to the divine allows your body to react to magical manifestations before you’re even aware of them. You gain a +2 insight bonus on saving throws against divine spells and spell-like abilities of outsiders with an alignment descriptor. This bonus increases by +1 for every five wizard levels you possess.

At 20th level, whenever you would be affected by a relevant spell or spell-like ability of that allows a saving throw, you can roll twice to save against the effect and take the better result.

Divine Magician: at 1st level a Theurge learns to translate divine magic into arcane magic. She can learn any spell on the cleric and Druid spell lists and scribe it on her spell book. These spells are considered on her spell list for the purpose of requirements and magic items.

All theurge archivist's spells are a cross between arcane and divine. These spells are cast as if arcane, yet their save DC (if any) is calculated using the theurge's Wisdom modifier instead of her Intelligence modifier. Arcane spell failure and other restrictions apply normally to these spells, including the need to use two spell slots to prepare a spell of an opposed school.

Spell sage: at 8th level, a Theurge with a high Wisdom bonus gains bonus spells per day according to the usual ability score table. These spells per day are in addition to those gained by a high Intelligence score and can only be filled with "divine" spells.

    Theurgic Archivist archetype

Discipline: a theurgic archivist must specialize in the Theurge discipline.

Arcane bond: as the standard wizard ability. The theurgic archivist must choose to bond with an object: her spell book. This spellbook works as a masterwork tool, granting a +2 circumstance bonus to Spellcraft checks. At 3rd level, the archivist gains the ability to enchant her bonded spellbook as if she possessed the Create Wondrous Item feat. Most archivists choose to enchant it into a blessed book.

The archivist must hold his spellbook in hand when casting, as if using a weapon or a rod. If an archivist attempts to cast a spell without his spellbook in hand, he must make a concentration check or lose the spell. The DC for this check is equal to 20 + the spell's level.

A theurge archivist's spellbook can be used once per day to cast any one spell therein contained and that the theurge is capable of casting, even if the spell is not prepared. This spell is treated like any other spell cast by the theurge, including casting time, duration, and other effects dependent on the wizard's level. This spell can be modified by metamagic feats or other abilities as if it were a spontaneously cast spell. The archivist's spellbook cannot be used to cast spells from the theurge's opposition schools, but can be used to cast divine spells gained through his arcane school abilities.

Student of the Divine: an arcivist can choose to gain a power granted at 1st level by a domain instead of a bons feat. Treat her archivist level as her cleric level for the purpose of domain power effects. If she already posses a domain power, she can gain the higher level ability of the same domain or a 1st granted power of a different domain.
If the theure archivist worships a deity, she must choose among the domains and subdomains offered by her patron deity.
This ability can replace bonus feats gained at 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th level
