Looking over this class a bit I actually kinda like it. Someone will need to explain to me after this contest though how it is "underwhelming". Not now, might spoil any ideas I may have. But sometime. I like some of its abilities and at least flavor-wise it seems fun. No ideas for a build yet but I'm working out the SI's strengths for some planning. I have to do better than last time.

Hehe wow, so Piggy and Amph are big in this, got it. Although I think I got that just from the discussions in the last ICCOC.

Truth be told, the simplest are the most elegant; no shoehorning in out of character skills, etc. A 5/5/10 (or 5/10/5), or a 10/10 is far more elegant. Those points do make the difference.

However, my 10/10 had a couple of accounting errors, which hit me hard in elegance so it is isn't everything.

Bear in mind that spoons mcgee (one of the most iconic entries in IC) was a 5/10/5. However, another, Old Lob One Eye was a 2LA/6/2/2/10 IIRC.

While I think i picked up a score of like 6 with a 5/1/1/1/2/10 and a half dozen templates. Simplicity picks up elegance, which could impact originality and vice versa.

While looking at originality though, when comments regarding 'required feats' (ie a Power Attack) these are often involved in power chains, ie shock trooper leap attacker etc. While PA will not recieve a hit (dependent on judge etc), a shock trooper leap attacker combination likely would, as well as possibl a hit for use of SI.

My tuppence, coming from someone who is yet to place. =P

I haven't been in it that long - a year and a half or so? I came in a few contests before Amph took over as chairman, with Divine Crusader as my first entry. But I've been involved pretty steadily since then.

The ones you really have to watch out for are OMG PONIES and Gotterdamerung. OMG's got more gold medals than anyone (six in all, last I checked), in addition to an encyclopedic knowledge of previous contests. Gotterdamerung has yet to enter an IC and not make it into the top 3.

Yeah, every single entry that Akal Saris made placed top 3, with quite a few gold medals there too. I haven't run the figures but I'd be willing to bet he's got the highest average score per entry by far. But he hasn't entered in two and a half years - his last IC entry was Gazebo Jones, back in the Drunken Master competition.

Yeah it does seem like fairly even splits like that do have advantages. My last one was 5/7/8, so it was fairly oddballish. Got points or originality at least.

I look at these and I have to worry about what is seen as original. I am still fairly new to seeing other peoples' views on D&D and it's conventions. Something that is commonplace, or expected among others could likely be entirely new to me. I'm not sure if that is bad because I might seem bland when I'm not realizing it, or good because I don't rely on any outside pressure when making a character; I just go with what looks cool and sounds like it fits.

Hoping my little words help someone here. Otherwise I'm just feeling rambley.

EDIT: And wow there are some real pros here. But more than anything now I look forward to the challenge.

Well, I think I'll dip my toe into this one. I got the most important thing out of the way, rationalizing the build with a halfway cogent backstory.

So, apparently my copy of Heroforge has a fun find-and-replace error where it lists the abilities of the Bloodscaled Fury (dragon-specific) PrC when I plug in levels of the Talon of Tiamat.

I have a build stub, but it requires me to do a pair of no-good, terrible, very bad things that are even more horrible when I do them together. Why can't this synergy be in the, you know, ingredient?

    Maybe I'll just judge instead.

    Fun.
try using the one lower class code. for my version it is supposed to be 590 but the 589 code gives all the correct information including HD, class abilities, skill points, BAB, saves, and caster advancement.

edit: the problem starts in the stormwrack prestige classes where the list has a blank spot where scarlet corsair should be and the names are all listed one lower afterward.

edit2: the prerequisites are still tied to the name of the prestige classes.

If you use a race with racial HD and LA, do you build out to ECL 20, 20 HD or 20 class levels?

I believe that judges are assuming ECL 20. Keep in mind that although you can use LA buyoff, some judges have penalized others for doing so.

thanks, i figured LA buyoff would get penalized so i wasn't planning on using it, but it's good to get confirmation on that.

Yeah when I saw just what they had to go through, I felt glad that I had dropped my plans to make a second. I'll definitely stick to only one character. I have 2 good plans it's just deciding on which one to continue with.

Buyoff gets penalized? Well dang...okay that limits me just a bit. I'll work through it. At the very least I am almost certain these ideas are unique.

I'd probably judge if it weren't for the fact that this will only be my second competition, even though I've watched a few others. Once I hit the fourth or fifth one I've entered, I'll probably take a break and judge for a bit.
