    Default Umbrae Machina OOC

    Rules:
    Spoiler
    Show

    System: D&D 3.5. E6
Player Count: 4 players, possibly 5
Style of Play: Investigation and Occult Horror.
    Allowed Content:

    • D&D Core (PHB, PHB 2, DMG, DMG 2)
    • D&D Core Supplements (Complete Series)
    • Other Books: Tome of Battle, Tome of Magic, Heroes of Horror, Psionics (anything on the SRD), Magic of Incarnum
    • Other Sources by request.
    • Homebrew currently approved: Gunslinger, Gnorman's E6 Compendum (case by case basis), see below for disciplines.
    • D20 Modern resources: Downloadable SRD, Ammo, D20 Modern SRD,

    Character Advancement:

    • Wealth: $1500 dollars, plus a vehicle and a furnished apartment. See Gear for info on equipment costs. All characters are issued a Beretta 92F, a Benelli 121 M1 Shotgun, and your choice of Light Undercover Shirt, Undercover Vest, or Concealable Vest. If you are proficient, you may take a Laser Pistol, Laser Rifle, or Antimatter Rifle instead of the Beretta or M1 Shotgun.
Your current salary gives you $500/month in discretionary income (i.e., not tied up in rent/bills/etc.)
    • Hitpoints/Health: Max health every level. Add Constitution score to starting health.
    • Alignment: Only banned alignments are any Evil, and Chaotic Nuetral.

    Other Notes:

    Legend
    Spoiler
    Show
Normal Wealth by Level is not being used. You can’t go down to the local Wal-Mart and pick up a magic sword. Instead, your magical nature “rubs off” on your equipment. You have Legend equal to what your Wealth by Level should be for your level (so, 900 for level 2). You can “spend” 1,000 Legend per day into making a “magical item,” or drain 1,000 (of your) Legend per day from an enhanced item to put back into your pool. This is done subconsciously. Each day an enhanced item is out of your control, it loses 1,000 Legend, which returns to you. Potions, scrolls, wands, and staves can’t be acquired this way.

    Item Crafting Feats
    Spoiler
    Show
Item crafting feats exist, and allow you to create permanent magic items by spending legend permanently. When creating an item with an item crafting feat, permanent legend is spent equal to the XP cost of the item. Temporary Legend is spent equal to half the market price of the item, which takes the usual amount of time to invest and recover (1,000 Legend/day).

    Weapon Proficiency
    Spoiler
    Show
Modern firearms are treated as martial weapons. Futuristic weapons exist, and are treated as exotic weapons (individually). Fighters gain one free exotic weapon proficiency per fighter level. All characters are proficient with “Pistol, Automatic” due to receiving training from the Metro City PD. See page 146 of the DMG for stats. Personal Firearms Proficiency is available from D20 Modern as well.

    Races
    Spoiler
    Show

Everyone is human, but can have the stats of any standard D&D race. Every character receives English for free, and can select any real-world language as their bonus language, except for computer languages, fictional languages, and dead languages.

    • Changeling: Can change their voice as well as their physical appearance. This grants a +10 bonus to bluff checks to imitate someone's voice.

    Play by Post
    Spoiler
    Show
Please read this post on play-by-post gaming, if you haven’t already. Please avoid builds that involve lots of stuff that interrupts other character’s actions, because that can really slow down gameplay for play by post.

    Free Skill
    Spoiler
    Show
Everyone gets one free skill at max ranks, which is considered a class skill for them. Additionally, cross-class skills do not cost 2 skill points/level (but are still capped at half of class skills).

    Psionics
    Spoiler
    Show
Psionics are allowed and encouraged. I am using the "Psionics are Different" option for Magic/Psionics interaction.

    Homebrew Disciplines
    Spoiler
    Show

    Black Rain
    Spoiler
    Show

Stare Down Death does not require a roll, it just works.

    Falcon's Eye
    Spoiler
    Show

    Key Skill is Investigation.
Stance of Accuracy only counts attacks made while in that stance. The total bonus cannot exceed your initiator level.

    Iron Rain
    Spoiler
    Show

    Dummy Shot:
Instead of an opposed roll, you replace your AC with your Bluff check against a single attack.

    Flanking Shot:
The target is just considered to be flanked for one turn, as per the Distracting Attack Ranger alternate class feature in PHB 2.

    Opportunist's Shot:
This maneuver is removed, it is too clunky for Play-by-Post.

    Nightingale Feather

    Skills
    Spoiler
    Show
Drive (dex) and Computer Use (int) are class skills for all classes.

    Monster Lore (Int):
This skill represents how much you have studied Esper case files from other parts of the world. It won't help you know more esoteric things about monsters, or anything about a monster if your team is the first Esper division to deal with it. Unlike knowledge skills, Monster Lore is usable untrained. Class skill for all classes. 5 ranks in Monster Lore gives a +2 synergy bonus to knowledge checks made to identify a monster.

    Research (Int):
This skill is used to find out about something you have no knowledge of. Effectively it replaces a knowledge check if you have downtime and access to a library/online database/etc. Class skill for any class with a knowledge skill as a class skill. 5 ranks in Computer Use gives a +2 synergy bonus to Research checks if you have access to any kind of relevant computer database.

    Investigation (Int):
This skill replaces Search, but has a slightly broader application.

    Requisition (Int):
Used to acquire non-standard gear through channels. Uses Wealth DCs for items. Is a class skill for Fighter, and for any class with Diplomacy or Gather Information as class skills.

    Repair (Int):
Used to fix things. Is a class skill for all classes, since it is basically Craft: Repair.

    Incantations
    Spoiler
    Show
I will be using the Incantation rules from UA, as a way for higher than 3rd level spells to occasionally be included in the game.

    Shotgun rules, courtesy of pieman2945
    Spoiler
    Show

    Buckshot damage
    standard 12ga : 4d6 damage.
    standard 16ga : 4d4 damage.
    standard 10ga : 4d8 damage.

    Slug damage
    standard 12ga : 2d10 damage.
    standard 16ga : 2d8 damage.
    standard 10ga : 2d12 damage.

For every range increment the shot round fires, half of the total damage dice are dropped and the shot spreads out as a cone one block more than the previous RI. (an example: I fire a 20 foot range shotgun loaded with buckshot. Within 20 feet, it hits the target and does buckshot. If the range is more, the shotgun hits the target and the two squars adjacent, as well as doing half damage. If the range is more than 40 feet it hits a total of five squares and does 1 die of damage.) as well as the shotgunner taking a -2 to hit.

Birdshot has half the range increment of buckshot, and does one less die of buckshot damage.

Slugs are treated as normal bullets, and so any rule referring to a shot round does not apply to a slug round.

Shot rounds ignore the target's size bonuses to AC.

Far Shot does not work with shot rounds

Precise Shot works normally with shot rounds, but only within the first range increment, and reduces damage by one die (since you can't effectively nail someone with the full shot pattern).

    Feat:
    Fast Pump
Pre-requisites: Point Blank Shot, Weapon Focus (Pump Shotguns)
Benefit: *A character with this feat can treat any pump-action shotgun as if it had a RoF of 'S' rather than 'Single'.

    Keep it Hot
Prerequisites: Fast Pump, Rapid Reload, Dex 13
Effect: You may load a number of shells equal to your Dex modifier once per round as a free action. You must have readily available ammunition to use this ability, such as a receiver-mounted ammunition carrier, bandolier, or tactical vest pouch.

    Item:
    Tactical rounds
Very wide spread rounds. Slug damage, but attacks all targets in a 15 foot cone.

    Armor As Damage Reduction
    Defense Bonus

    Armor
    Spoiler
    Show

Undercover Vest: +2 Armor, 1/- DR, Max Dex +7, AC penalty -0, Spell Failure 5%, Light Armor Proficiency
Bulletproof Vest: +2 Armor, 2/- DR, Max Dex +6, AC penalty -0, Spell Failure 10%, Light Armor Proficiency
Riot Gear: +3 Armor, 2/- DR, Max Dex +5, AC penalty -1, Spell Failure 15%, Medium Armor Proficiency

You can have any of those you have proficiency in. Following are additional armor you'll have to acquire on your own if you want them:

Modern Military Body Armor: +3 Armor, 3/- DR, Max Dex +3, AC penalty -3, Spell Failure 25%, Heavy Armor Proficiency, $5000 or DC 20 Requisition Check
Futuristic Military Body Armor: +4 Armor, 4/- DR, Max Dex +3, AC penalty -3, Spell Failure 25%, Heavy Armor Proficiency, $15000 or DC 25 Requisition Check

Due to modern materials, medium armor requires medium armor proficiency, but does not reduce movement, and heavy armor requires heavy armor proficiency but counts as medium for determining movement.

I think I'll have Winston as some sort of Internal Affairs liason with the team. That'd give him a reason to come in after this current adventure or when they come back to the office.

    • You come up empty on Monster Lore.
    • It looks like the bodies were cut open with surgical precision, and the internal organs were removed.
    • The beam of your flashlight also lands on what appears to be construction materials against the wall, which do not appear to have any dust on them, indicating that they have been moved recently.
    • The meat hooks look crude, like they were made from metal scrounged from a junkyard, not purchased from a butcher supply shop or the like.

Would it not represent the pooling of knowledge though? If several people who are all knowledgeable about X subject all convene and pool their knowledge on a single subject then it makes sense that they would be better at figuring something out together than on their own. After all, two people with similarl levels of knowledge about the same subject (e.g. 5 ranks in the same knowledge skill) don't necessarily know exactly the same things, so by working together they would be more likely to come up with something.

Maybe it would work with research, when you are attempting to find information that you do not know, but if knowledge represents what you remember off the top of your head, then it seems impractical to aid another on that check.

Exactly. Knowledge and Monster Lore is what you know. Research is your skill in digging up new information that you didn't already know. So Aid Another works with Research, but not with Knowledge or Monster Lore.

Edit- It isn't like the construction materials look new, but more like they have been moved frequently. It is stuff like plywood sheets, tarp, cleaning chemicals (possibly what was covering the empty pool before, and related supplies, all of it old).

    I'll update more later tonight.

What about Dom's question? Did I notice any differences in decomposition?
The officer gave Dom a list of residents, and commented that they have no IDs on the victims yet. You don't have enough medical knowledge for a precise guess (rolled Heal for you), but they look pretty much the same to you, maybe a few days apart at most.

    • I made a heal check for you already, and you'll have to wait for the coroner's report for more information.
    • To know more about ghouls, you'll need to do research, the initial monster lore roll represents what you know about ghouls.
    • Based on the amount of blood, you are pretty sure the victims were alive when they were put on the meathooks.

Note: If you get to the point where you want to wait for the forensics team to arrive, or leave the basement to begin interviewing people, let me know.

I'll try and keep up posting as best as I'm able, but I'm having a lot of computer trouble at the moment as my aeons old laptop finally enters the last pathetic stages of its long life. The replacement won't arrive until tomorrow (hopefully, anyway) and then I have the laborious process of moving all of the data over to it and downloading everything again. Everything will be back to normal in a few days, but this is just my heads up/apology for however poor my posting consistency currently is or may become until I've completed the transition.

Rules question: I have the skill trick Conceal Spellcasting, which allows me to prevent people from noticing me casting which obviously has any number of uses. 1 question though: If do cast a spell on someone without their noticing, and they throw it off, do they know that I cast it?

Generally yes, but I'll look it up. Skill tricks are in Complete Adventurer, right?

    Edit-
The skill trick will prevent them from knowing you cast the spell, but will not prevent them from knowing that they made a save, if they normally would be aware that they made a saving throw. I'm having trouble finding where it talks about being aware of having made a saving throw to determine exactly when that occurs.

    Edit-
Don't know whether or not I can assume that everyone has everyone else's contact details already saved on their phones, seeing as we work together. If not, I figure at next opportunity we should all just assume our characters have exchanged relevant contact information.
Go ahead and assume you have each other's cell number, home phone number, primary personal email address, work email address, home address, license plate number, make/model of vehicle, and favorite bar/restaurant/other hangout. You have a dangerous job, and that lends itself to knowing a lot about your partners. Assume you've been working together for about 6 months as well.

Slight objection to anyone's knowing that much about Dom, given his backstory and proclivity for changing identities. His home is his castle, the one place where he is not pretending to be some one or some thing else (usually). Anyway, he prefers that no one know exactly where he lives. So I would prefer that no one know Dom's home address, home phone #, or where he hangs out when he is being some one else.

Its not that he doesn't trust the party, specifically; he just has a lot of trouble trusting anyone.

Ok then. In Dom's case, assume you know the home address that is on file, the home phone number that is on file (but that always goes to voicemail), and the place he hangs out when wanting to be seen hanging out in his ESPD persona.

Same provision applies for everyone else that is more secretive than usual.

@EriktheRed: IS there a treadmill in the basement?

By the way, I am writing all of this information down on my notepad to share with the party later.

@the rest of the party: So let's sum up what we have so far. We think that the murders were the work of a Ghoul, but they were unusually tidy, if that is not an obscene word to use in this context. Some of the organs of the victims were removed by a surgical scalpel.

As for the scene: we know that there are at least two, probably three exits from the area: the supposedly blocked front entrance, the broken-out window, and the crawlspace. The front was originally blocked by some construction materials which were moved to hide the crawlspace when the place was discovered. Given how well the crawlspace was concealed and the fact that your usual landlord, upon discovering a human meat locker in his basement, does not first carefully conceal one of the entrances, I suspect the landlord of possible involvement in some way, even if he is not a ghoul himself.

    Any thoughts?

Some clarification: The "meat locker' is not the entirety of the basement.

There is a small exercise room in the basement with a treadmill and one of those weight machine things (think knockoff bowflex). You haven't noticed it yet, but as soon as you go and check, you can confirm that it is there.

You don't know where the broken basement window leads to, but it does not go into the old pool area (there are no windows into the old pool area).

The front was originally locked, not blocked off. The construction materials are from what used to be covering the large hole in the floor that used to be the pool itself.

He doesn't notice you casting a spell, but you don't detect any magical auras. You also know enough about magic to know that if he were under some kind of spell that has expired, the aura would only be visible for a matter of minutes, unless it was some kind of powerful ritual spell.
