    Default A Very (un)Common Quest (3.5)- OOC

Welcome to the OOC thread for A Very (un)Common Quest! You will begin the campaign as simple peasants in a small town on the edge of a powerful kingdom. What lies before you is an adventure of danger, chaos, drama, suspense, and yes... some comedy. Please introduce your character, along with your speech color (note mine is green), and we will begin the campaign shortly.

First, I want to welcome you to Watertown. Watertown boasts about 200 residents and sits on the outskirts of the Orange Kingdom. The town is known for its dairy farms, but has many other industries as well, including smithing and breweries.

The residents of Watertown are known for their generally welcoming attitudes. They always welcomes visitors and new residents with a feast and open arms, and are always finding ways to help each other thrive in the small community. The people of Watertown pride themselves on their hospitality.

Because of their distance from the royal throne, Watertown has taken up their own "mayor" to establish order in the town. There is one knight present in the town, but he has taken a backseat to the political figurehead of the town. The mayor is known for his large personality and his large stomach. Although he is a little on the pudgy side, he has a heart that is far too big for a man his size. He is adored and respected by all of Watertown's residents.

So from the Mayor of Watertown, greetings!

Shif-and-Fang laugh at your carriage, old man. (Until someone hurls them into the drink. It's the only way they ever get a bath, but it happens often enough, thank goodness.) We speak in dark orange 'cause all the good colors got taken before we got here.

    PERSONALITY:
    Spoiler
    Show
Dulin Clanless is a generally cheerful person with a quick mind and relatively reasonable and easygoing personality. He gets along with others as well as the next guy, but prefers to keep to himself. Though he has the mind of an inventor and an engineer, his mechanical solutions often do not take into account obvious inconsistencies, and some are downright dangerous for the user and everyone around him. Still, when controlled correctly, Dulin's brilliance will, with time, solve any problem ever encountered; something that has kept the dwarf optimistic through all 57 years of his life despite hazardous injuries and deficiencies that would destroy any lesser creature.

    PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
    Spoiler
    Show
Dulin stands above average in height at almost four-and-an-half feet. Though not as well built as most dwarves, he bears scars and disfigurements from his childhood; scars from wounds even most dwarves would not have survived. It is clear from the gashes along hisarms from incidents with chisels and whittling knives that Dulin is tough...really tough.

Beside his greatly scarred physique, this clanless mountainkin is almost entirely unremarkable. He wears common craftsman's clothing, thick hide gloves and a leather belt holding many mundane tools from hammers to small handsaws and whittling knives.
Thick dark hair is held back in a tail at the nape of his neck, a small beard jutting from his chin, ungrown for practicality. Dulin's smile is lopsided, a broken cheekbone having grown a nub that pulls the skin taut on one side with this expression. Not a pleasant sight, but not entirely hideous either.
Lastly, at first glance it seems his right leg is encased in a steel cage that falls into a steel boot, but this is not the case. Any observer will note that the leg is missing entirely, replaced with a shaped block of wood and held onto the upper leg with steel clamps. The entire "foot" seems to be made of steel in the shape of a boot.

When in his suit of armour, though, this dwarf's entire image is changed. A boiled leather suit covers all but the head and right leg of the engineer, thin bands of metal armour reinforcing his shoulders, back and arms, occasionally crossing each other for greater protection. Dulin's favourite shield completely conceals his person from view to the front, its heavy wooden construction held together with bands of steel from old wine barrels. In fact, the slatted wood and slight curvature give the entire construction the feel of a slab from the side of a giant wine barrel.

Dulin is accompanied by his mule, though she has never yet been named. She carries his packs and armour (but not his shield), when on the move.

    BACKGROUND:
    Spoiler
    Show
Many years ago, close to two hundred by best reckoning, a minor dwarven clan known as the Wintergold Clan suffered the loss of a great chieftain. As was customary, his young son took the place of leadership and for a few short years this was satisfactory. But this young dwarf was a fool, and squandered much of the wealth of the clan on extravagant tunnels and great chambers and princely gifts at the expense of necessary food and cloths and tools, and protection from the creatures that dwell beneath the surface of the world.

A revolt was staged, a mutiny of the craftsmen and families of the clan that were falling into poverty by the new chieftain's actions. In this revolt were two largely irrelevant dwarves; Onil and Glanis. Onil was a carpenter, a neglected profession in this new regime, and much of his work never made its way out of his shop. Glanis, on the other hand, was a tailor. She didn't struggle for work as much as her husband due to the great demand for clothing that was not being satisfied by trade with the outside world.
Together, they joined the uprising to remove leadership from the fool of a chieftain and replace him with a dwarf more like his father.

Unfortunately, the miners, brewers and soldiers greatly supported this new regime and fought for the new chieftain. Within months, the uprising was extinguished. In fear for their lives, many of the mutineers fled the mountainhomes into human lands, some journeying many months before settling down once more. Such is the story of Onil and Glanis, experts in their crafts and relocated to a small village outside of a moderate town where they could sell their goods and live, for the most part, contentedly.
They integrated into the mostly human community seamlessly and had a child not long after settling down.

It was another generation before Dulin was born, the son of a travelling peddler and the child of Olin and Glanis.

Dulin's early life was somewhat of a catastrophe. He was born without a right leg and at a very young age he broke his left arm in multiple places after falling from a tree that he had been playing in. Less than ten years later, he fell from a moving wagon on his way into town and shattered the other arm. All these incidents and misfortunes led to Dulin's physically weak form, his missing leg preventing him from undertaking many activities with other children in the village. After the failed tree-climbing experience, though, he tended not to like many of those activities anyway.

He didn't take up the family profession in carpentry, though he was more than adept at it, preferring to design complicated mechanical devices integrating both iron and wooden parts. In fact, his most brilliant achievement (and one of the only ones to actually work as expected) was his own leg; an iron frame wrapped around a core of solid timber for strength and shaped to fit his stubby protrusion exactly. Though walking is slow, it is not nearly impossible and after almost twenty years of practice he has managed to get quite used to it.

Most children in the town play at swordfighting with sticks or crudely made wooden swords, then grow out of it at a good age. Dulin never grew out of it, nor did he have much interest in swords. As he grew, he simply became better at building his toy shields, that got stronger and wider as he excelled in his craft...his most prized is almost as tall as he is and certainly as wide. It's virtually a reinforced door strapped to his arm.

    ADVANCEMENT:
    Spoiler
    Show
Dulin will be taking seven levels of knight, and then prestige classing to Dwarven Defender. That's the plan, anyway.

Someone needs to supply the chef some acid so here's Sneeky Bedlam, trap and brew specialist, who loves gardening and have a penchant for swift words.

He's Gray Lightblue for his natural tendencies.

Dargh is the town executioner. He's not particularly rude, in fact, He's pretty cheery in the day to day actives, being cheered on for stepping up to the block is a rare treat, even if it's at the hand of doing something gruesome.

Dargh will use Dark Olive green for his voice...

And Lil' Dargh (His doll and imaginary friend AND talking buddy!) will be voiced by him in Yellow green, showing him raising his voice slightly

@Erik: I've taken Purple for speech already. DarkOrchid is available if you want to personalise your voice, though.

If you want to hang onto Purple, I'm happy to share voice-colour (it doesn't really make much difference in-game), I'm just pointing it out to you in case you missed it.

    Cheers mate,

Somewhere, a great distance from the Orange Kingdom across the great wilderness, is a land where the Orcs have been exiled. Countless Orcs live as sitting ducks, lives threatened if they were to ever venture out of their carefully plotted land.

While some Orcs have made attempts to raid kingdoms, all attempts proved futile however as the great wilderness seems to be separating them from any real civilizations. Rumor has it that the Orcs have grown restless and bloodthirsty. Could Solomon's tale be the beginning of the Orc's rebellion?

Yes. That is doable. It was a generic restaurant (note that I'm staying away from taverns! ) so making it a Ziegler clan place is fine by me.
