I didn't really bother shading though, because I'm lazy and I just didn't care enough this time. *shrugs*

This was the last avatar I did, which I was happy with. Completely forgot about it though.

CLY: Nothing like classic Mega Man! MM2 had some of the best music in the series too!

Allan Dotson: I'm digging your fanart series quite a lot. In your last piece, I could almost forget that Crystal was an deranged murderer. Personally, I'd picture Crystal with a gleefully evil expression, rather than the generic serious look you've got there.

    Here it is:

I think I prefer raster graphics for making avatars rather than vector graphics. I'm not sure why; they can both achieve the same things. It could be that I find it easier to shade in raster. The ability to easily add textures couldn't hurt either.

And very nice Kurien, though I must admit that the hands are odd to me, as her right looks normal while her left is an OOTS style claw.
Though that reminds me that I think I've been using this avatar for at least half a year if not a whole one. Time sure is weird.

Halae: I'm glad that you like it! Since I hadn't made an avatar in a while, I thought I'd be rusty. In order to help her stand out from the dark background I chose, I happened to experiment with the white lines. There were also some extra touches (e.g.: hair shine and secondary light source) which I would've liked to add to the picture, but it seems like the colouring technique I chose made it much less easy to pull off, so I didn't do it. That technique is still a work-in-progress.

LDK: Thanks! Y'know, I didn't think about it when I was making it, but you're right; it is a bit odd how one hand is somewhat realistically-shaped and the other is the classic OotS trident. Unless Halae would like it changed, I think this is something to consider in future avvies.

Heh. I'm far too inept with art to even remotely comprehend when people talk about different means of shading and such. I can sketch alright but not much of anything else.
I'm at that weird point where I can't even make a request for a new avvie since I have far too many characters to choose one Hal has the advantage of Trick taking priority in her cast.

This threads for feedback as well right? I've been sporadically attempting to get a hold on Inkscape by been practicing on OotS avatars. Only done a few, but I just can't get them "just right".

For example, I just can't quite figure out how to do the hands when they hold things, and the latest comic style update down with the thick & coloured limbs is just plain eluding me .

The only ones worth showing are my second, third and fourth avatar attempts below (the same as the ones in my ext. sig), and any critiques/advice would be awesome. The first try was terrible so I'm going to pretend one didn't happen and yes all the boots are essentially the same, something else to fix

Tarvus: Coming from someone who is somewhat artistically minded, if you're having trouble with grasping hands, no matter what style you're using, my first advice would be to study how hands in real life look and behave, using either your own hands or Google for reference. If you just want the shortcut to OotS hands, then there's also Teddy's handy reference from the last thread.

Your first tries are quite decent, showing a grasp of basic vectoring, but I spot an issue that most beginning avatarists need to watch:

As a general rule of thumb, avatars look better with consistent line weights (how thick lines are)..In the Winter Wolf Slayer, the line weights vary considerably, probably because you drew the weapons and accessories separately from the base figure at a different size, and when you rescaled them to fit, the line weight scaled along with it. Vector programs should have a way to keep line weights the same while resizing. Although it's been awhile, I believe there was a "Keep Lines Proportional" option in Adobe Illustrator that you could uncheck to do this. I'm guessing you'll find something similar in Inkscape.

Only when you're comfortable at drawing with consistent line weights should you begin to experiment with varying the line weights for more detail.

What's left is to simply practice; you should pick things up quickly on what to do and not do.

Thank you muchly for the advice. Keeping the line width was something I've between trying to work out - its one of my major issues with my current avatar. With the next one, Boba Fett, I tried to keep it more consistent, but his design is relatively simple and with wider lines on the small stuff you can lose a lot of detail. With "Dwarven Constitution" I was trying to show thickness, like the plate and boots were heavy and strong, but obviously thats not the impression it puts across.

Things to consider, thanks again for the advice and that link! Looks like it will be very....handy (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Edit: made some initial updates to the slayer avie in the ext sig from your suggestions. A bit better, but I'm still working on it. Thanks again.

Also, Allan, I think the Bandana link is broken.
Among other things, the eyes and mouth are female. Move the eyes higher and the mouth lower. Refer to the recent link to the guide on hands holding things. If there are black things, the general rule of thumb is do them in dark grey so you can still see the outline. And maybe too many straight lines. But it's still quite good. You've got line width and head size down decently.

    It's better.

Now I'd suggest putting the eyebrows over the headthing, making the overall line width a bit heavier, and making the belt or sash curve down a little. Move the arms a bit higher on the torso, and also curve the neck slash. If you want, also eliminate a node or two on the legs, making them more curved.

Indeed, and I'm also going to be playing in a game of PTU soon.

Artistic decision on my part. I've been drawing sleeves and pants for a long while now, but I really don't like the noodle limbs. It's a stick figure comic. They (IMO) should be stick figures not noodly people. It especially bothers me with the pitchfork hands. They're acceptable with sticks but when made slightly fleshy it's just weird.
