Death and Rebirth, A Cold Eternity: ECL 5
    Spoiler
    Show

My story is a complicated one. My life, if you can call what I now possess 'life', had a beginning, an end and a rebirth in death. In my mortal existence, as short as it was, I was a druid. I clung to the trappings, and lies, of life and believed everything had balance. I saw beauty in the struggle and failure of the natural world. I believed...

I wasn't anything special in my mortal shell. Physically, I was swift and had a burning passion that seared through me when I hunted. I loved the hunt more than anything. I specialized in summoning nature's creatures for sport, for hunting and for food. One could rightly come to the conclusion that I favored the blood of animals to the exclusion of other creatures. Indeed, I was ravenous in my youth. ... I was a fool.

It was this ... eagerness that eventually turned me from the path of nature. It was a slow turn, indeed, but as sure as the sun rises each day. The fear of growing old haunted my dreams and I turned from the nature cycle, despite still believing it to be the true way. I was ... flawed in my logic and carry with me each day, the consequences of my decision.

What decision, you ask? Well, I sold my soul, to be frank. It was a devil's bargain, one that I considered myself well equipped to manipulate to my advantage. I still amaze myself at my foolishness, thinking that I could outwit such creatures who's sole existence is to beguile mortals into bad contracts and turn their very souls into fuel for their own powers. What was my plan? Why, to 'live' forever, of course. That way, they could never collect their payment.

The bargain was a free return to life once I had perished for the first time. They would allow my soul to return to the mortal realm only once, unhindered. My obvious loophole was to ensure that when I came back, I could not die again. To that end, I made another bargain. Not with the devils, but with the undead. I had heard of a ritual where one was crucified with curse nail and, should one 'survive' the experience, would return to the world in a shell almost alive. Necropolitans, they were called. They considered themselves the elite of the undead, just because they still enjoyed a somewhat tainted similarity to the living. Regardless of my personal feelings, I needed whay they offered.

They had never turned a druid to their way of life. This is obviously due to our reverence to life and the natural way of things. Undead were abominations and should remain outside of the natural world. I still agree with that way of thinking, even now that Nature spurns me. Even so, I was like an experiment to them and gaining a patron was an easy matter. My transformation into an undead abomination was a fairly standard process. The unique part being that my link with nature remained intact. They didn't let that opportunity go to waste. I was subject to an extruciating spell-stitching process. The Necropolitans branded the arcane magics into my flesh, all the way to bones. Perhaps even to the edges of my borrowed soul. My talents for summoning creatures took a new turn, where I spent decades ... perhaps even a century or two, overseeing bargains between the extra-planar creatures and the undead. I was ... useful. Until I lost my reverence for nature and nearly met oblivion.

Using a bit of cheese to even get this build off the ground. Without Necropolitan and Spellstitched template, the build doesn't happen. Ideally, the character is a 3rd level Druid when undertaking the Rite necessary to become a Necropolitan. Furthermore, the cost to become Spellstitched, even if paying 25gp per exp is prohibitive (200,000 gp in total, or substancially less if exp is paid). I am assuming that whatever pact the character made with whatever entity granted him access to both templates is paid overtime and has a high rate of interest, that leads to the character becoming a Blighter later on. The last assumption this build makes is that the first 'payment of experience' is made immediately after the rite is completed, effectively draining the character to 1xp (or any point less than level 2).

Using the rules described in Complete Arcane, we can use the spell-like ability (Lesser Planar Ally) to meet the casting requirements of Thaumagurist, well before it is intended. In addition, since the character has all the requirements met via one feat and his spell-like abilities, he never loses access to the benefits of the prestige class, even when he loses his druid spellcasting and other abilities. This will help to keep him relevant during the downtime.

The character has very little HP to begin with and will forgo melee combat as much as possible, serving to support at range and rely on summoning spells. This is also why we choose to pick Animate Dead as a spell-like ability. Cannon fodder = less chance of melee combat. The benefits of Thaumagurist will be well used on summoning spells. We will not be taking the fifth level of Thaumgurist due to the rule on leadership-esque abilities. That is the sole reason. We get damage reduction 5/magic or silver. That should help with HP a little.

The choice of the alternate class abilities is two-fold. The character is never going to progress far enough in druid to gain any real benefit, so they serve to front load the class with as many abilities as possible. Secondly, it also serves as a double-edged sword. The more abilities he has, the more it is felt when they are taken away. This gives the character a more visceral reaction to the loss and fuels the intense hatred he has for nature, leading him to the Blighter prestige class.

Loss and Reclaimation, A Fiery Passion: ECL 10 - Sweet Spot
    Spoiler
    Show

Still reading? Suit yourself, though I do suppose an undead abomination that lost his loose hold on his mortal beliefs might pique your interest. My tale does become more interesting, though my severing from nature's teat left me weak and destitute. When I was no longer useful, I was expelled from the Necropolitans until I served a purpose. Such is their way that every piece must have a place. The fools are blinded by Order and do not even now it. Regardless, I had to make my own way thus forth.

I attempted to return to adventuring, ages since I had last walked in the mortal world. Times had changes, new styles of fighting had grown popular and a certain adventurer caught my eye. Her fluid movement and fiery passion rekindled a shadow of the flame that used to burn within myself. I joined her group for a time, pretending to be a sorcerer focused on necromancy. Oooh, I was good at it. She never seemed to enjoy my puppet games with the zombies and skeletons of our fallen enemies though she never complained of their presence in a fight. It was by watching her and learning her disciplines that I reawoke my mortal determination and feelings of rage. After so many years of cold existence, I could feel the strands of nature just beyond my reach. And reach I did.

Nature recoiled like an animal struke by a cobra. I could feel the energies wilt from my grasp. It was ... intoxicating and succulent. I could pretend that I felt the blood pumping within my veins and the lost connection with nature flared to life in searing anguish. I admit, I was drunk on power. Blind to the destruction I was causing. The extent was not something one could hide easily. Spells long since scarred from my mind begin to dance behind my eyes and I knew I was ... home.

Fire became my life. The scent of charred flesh dancing in the ashen air made the long since dormant saliva glands in my mouth yearn for the ability to water. I was ... careful to a degree. When I moved, I moved quickly. My actions were not hidden from all eyes despite my efforts. Agents of greater powers sought me out. Some to slay me. Others to bargain. Still others to try and take from me what I most coveted, my new life. I slew them all. Except ... one. My fiery dancer, the one that showed me the way to the flame. I ... listened to her. She spoke of the lord of flame, the greatest of the elemental lords. Kossuth! She made him sound worthy of worship and, looking around, told me that he even allowed persons like myself to serve him in their own unique manner, granting them boons for their service.

It was by no great measure of faith that I became a follower of Kossuth. I blame puppy-love, or whatever bastardized, imagined emotion that I was capable of pretending to have at that time. I followed her. My journey towards actual belief... That's a story for a later date...
    Spoiler: Breakdown

Why swordsage? Out of all the classes I could pick, I chose swordsage for the skill points. It alone has the Wis to AC and sufficient skill points (and the proper Hide/Move Silently class skills) to make the build work. In two levels, 16 skill points are granted. Second reason, out of the classes available, only it had the ability to get sneak attack via a martial stance, cementing our ability to meet the requirements of the secret ingredient. I considered two other options, Thug/sneak attack fighter variant and master of masks. The fighter did not get the skills I needed and the master of masks was too skill point intensive.

I consider ECL 10 to be the sweet spot. We have the ability to wildshape, and thus, have actual decent physical ability scores to use in melee. It won't be until level 12 when we get Natural spell, and the ability to cast spells in wildshape. Improved toughness is needed for additiona HP and Assassin's Stance is key to the secret ingredient.

Zeal and Fervor, Serve and Worship: ECL 15
    Spoiler
    Show

I have been perusing my previous journal entries. I am tempted to burn them but allow them to stand as a testament towards my achievement of self control. Fire still rules my life. Nothing is so sweet or warm to these cold, dead fingers and dark stretches of my soul. I have purpose in following Kossuth. His ways are higher than my own and my gifts are used to further his campaign against the other elemental lords. Cleansing is coming and I will be his instrument. I have already devastated leagues of forests and other fertile lands that his enemies try to hide behind. Soon, nothing but barren earth will lie between Kossuth and his enemies, and even that will become charred by flame.

The flames that I weild are starting to change. Darker and darker they becoming, shining with an obsidian gleam. I am the shadow that strikes from the darkness though this darkness, it is not empty nor is it cold. I will burn away all your impurities and should you survive, you are worthy to be in his presence. I am his dark assassin. I am oblivion.

    .....

I do believe that I am quite mad. A pity you can not hear the snickers and half surpressed giggles that escape my mouth as I write these words. They are ... gloriously entertaining... Zealous hearts, and all.
    Spoiler: Breakdown

What better way to make use of the partial spellcasting increase that the secret ingredient provides, than with an accelerated spellcasting class? Ur-priest was too easy a choice and a straight druid 5/sneak fighter 1/blighter4/zealot10 was too simple for my taste. I had to jump on the cheese train. Nothing else inspired me.

At this level, we have 5th level blighter spells, 5th level arcane casting (spell-like, close enough), decent marital manuevers, enough sneak attack damage to make someone pause, immunity to fear (take THAT undead panick spells! I'm sure we can ignore turning attempts that don't outright slay us, too), decent saves, and probably a small army of undead minions. We are well on our way.

Oh, right. Damage reduction from Spellstitched reaches max, 5/magic and silver.

Smoldering Flame, A Banked Desire: ECL 20
    Spoiler
    Show

Can one become tired of the killing when one does not tire? I do believe I would have made a much better vampire than a necropolitan. At least they have style. They don't even know how to die properly. Or rather, now that I am able to weild my black flame as a weapon, they seem much too easily to destroy. The blade comsumes body and soul. I have grown to have great respect for my fellow clergy. We are all mad in one way or another. The fire burns away what it does not need and fanatacism is ever so much more useful than anything else.

Sometimes I dream of where I might find myself down the ages. Unlike most followers of Kossuth, my service could very well go on forever. There will always be places to deforest, places to burn and enemies to slay. It seems all pointless and unchanging. There is, however, the pleasure. My duties have no end of it and its intensity never seems to fade.

Do all immortals come to grips with their pointless existence? Those that have all of time have no need of it. Should I adopt a pet hobby? Aside from total and complete destruction, of course. For now, I am content to wage these battle in Kossuth's name. Perhaps one day, his throne will be mine...
    Spoiler: Breakdown

I keep kicking myself that I could not fit in enough levels of blighter to get 9th level spells. Just needed one more! If only the secret ingredient had been a 1/2 casting prestige class on odd levels! I would have sacrificed the last level for another Blighter level! Oh well, can't have your cake and eat it too. 9th level spells aren't that great ... Yeah...

So, 8th level divine casting, 5th level arcane spell-like abilities, lots of ways to burn stuff and things we kill tend to stay dead. What's not to love? We even have a caster level of 17 for the divine spells. Not too shabby. With Maximize Spell-Like ability, we can (at 18th level and higher) use Wings of Flurry to deal 18d6 - 20d6 damage (108 - 120) to everything of our choice in 30 yards.

He was already late and now he was waiting to be fully examined at another checkpoint. He hated the procedure but he understood the need for it. Terrible things have been happening lately and this was natural response. He wondered if any of those deneith mercenaries knew what was going on. House Sivis was pulling strings and favors from everywhere now, it was wonder they were able to keep it all secret. Kundarak wards, deneith mercenaries, medani inquisitives, it was just a big mess and it seems none of it helped. They finaly let him through and he entered the great hall where most of his peers were already debating.
    „What’s going on?“
    „We lost the book.“
    „THE book?!“
    „Yes, THE book.“
The conversation was continuing but he wasn’t paying attention. They lost almost all copies but now the original journal of Dojurn was stolen? This was worse then he thought. Elemental binders were always replaceable, as they could train more, but without the journal and its coppies, how will they continue? And who is behind this all? So many questions and no answers were comming.

Shouting and arguing was continuing for some time and they still couldn’t agree on anything. He already grabbed all his things as he decided to leave and think about all this alone and in silence when it happened. A column of fire fell from the ceiling and everything was in chaos. He blacked out for a while and when he regained his senses he was lying on the ground, badly burned but alive. This couldn’t be said about the rest of his peers. And in middle of this doom a lone figure was standing. It was covered in black clothes, it’s face hidden behind a veil made from finely crafted chains and it was holding a two-bladed sword. He wanted to ask so many questions, he wanted explanations but he was to have none of it. The sword bursted in flames and then in one quick motion went through his chest...

Kirris quickly checked the room. The gnome that she stabbed was the last one. She heard noise of guards comming and she knew she has to get away. Now.

She already took her hidden stash, with all the artifacts that the gnomes stole from her people and all the books they have written about it. Now was time to finish the last plan and let the inferior races consume each other in war. She knew she could control items with binded elementals and now she waited for her opportunity to steal an airship from the hangar. She never tried to sail one, but the elemental will help her if she will let him go once she gets back to Xen’drik, she was sure of it. And this will start war between House Sivis and House Lyrandar, because who else can drive airships? She was lucky as all but few guards went away to check what was going on in House Sivis headquarters. She moved into position and backstabbed the gnome guard who vanished in burst of flames. The rest was killed quickly in following few seconds. She quickly enterd the hangar and boarded the fastest looking airship. Her talk to elemental was short and it went smoothly. She will get home after so many months in this horrible place of traitorous little people.

    Spoiler: Race comments and adaptation

Sulatar is version of drow living in Xen’drik and are part of eberron’s awesomeness. You can find them in Secrets of Xen’drik, pg. 51. They are evil, still believe in their giant masters and worship a force called Promise of Fire (domains are destruction, evil and fire, favored weapon two-bladed weapon). This build revolves around this society and this religion and therefore I changed requirements for Black Flame Zealot. Instead of kukri it uses two-bladed sword as it is favored weapon of Promise of Fire and as the Sulatar drow get familiarity with it and threat it as martial weapon. If this adaptation is unacceptable just change the proficiency feat in my build to kukri.

Lesser drow was picked as the weakest form of drow that allows you to play withouth and LA. If you want more power and are allowed to do so you can use savage progression drow without actualy taking levels in the progression. If LA buyoff is on the table and you feel like it, you can go with full drow and just buy the LA as you level up. Last thing to mention here is elemental racial variants from Unearthed Arcana. Making your drow a fire drow would be nice as it goes well with the Sulatar theme.

You are archivist, you can access all cleric spells when leveling up. The rest is depending on what scrolls you get. Spells from domain are good to go so you should try and get spells from Fire domain (to keep in theme) and Trickery domain (for better sneaking/scouting). Try to get Flame Strike scroll made by druid as it is one level lower (and thus you can use it) and use it as your signature spell and for style (it won’t be terribly effective though).
When leveling you should pick up Astral Hospice (SpC, cleric 4) so you can use Dimensional Jaunt feat. Astral Hospice is otherwise worthless so Dimension Door from Portal domain would be better, but might not be attainable. If you play with flaws and pick up Heighten Spell, then you can use Knight’s Move (SpC, cleric 3) for same effect while being legal and somewhat useful.

Kirris was unhappy with her lot in life. The elders decided that she has almost no connection to the Promise of Fire and that she will never be firebinder. So she was training in military from young age. She was trying to avoid her duties as much as she could as she hated it. Instead she often sneak up to the reliquary and studied all things there extensively. She even learned some minor spells and tricks from her secret fascination of old culture, but had to keep it hidden from everyone. Luckily for her she was never caught sneaking and studying things she shouldn’t be.

However, one day she could not hide it anymore. She was on patrol duty with few others of her clan. She bore her two-bladed sword as she was looking out for trouble that was soon to come. They were ambushed by small party of vulkoor drow. The fight was quick and brutal and she was able to save herself and few others only by using her magic to cast flames from her hands to drive the attackers away. They quickly returned to the rest of their clan to bring the news of the attack and also of the way they were saved. Kirris quickly claimed that she was given the power by the Promise of Fire to protect herself and others so that they could serve it. Elders took her for questioning and soon they realized that Kirris was lying to them. They could not overlook her talents and she was big talk in the clan now so she couldn’t be just disposed. Few days later elders proclaimed her to be god given and that she will be trained to become paragon of the Sulatar.

At level 5 you are Jack-of-not-all-trades. You can do quite a lot of things, but you aren’t excelling in anything except sneaking and sneaking should be your main role. You are squishy as you live on d6 hitdice and even above average constitution (for an elf) isn’t going to save you much. You only have 1d6 sneak attack, so staying out of melee is probably good thing to do. You can use your spells to buff yourself or your party though and with your quite good saves and evasion you should be able to survive a lot of spell attacks.

Her training was very hard and unforgiving but she managed to survive it all. She no longer feared anything and learned how to be both sneaky and how to controll her spells a bit better. She was no firebinder but she was competent. But with high regard comes a lot of responsibilities. When she finished her training, the elders commanded her again. Now she was to be sent into Zilargo where gnomes live and she was to get back their secrets of elemental binding that were stolen from them. Suddenly the training made sense to her. She was filled with hatred towards the gnomes and was eager to go.

The way to Trolanport, the metropolis of Zilargo and place where she would live for next months, was boring. Getting through jungle to Stormreach and then board a ship and wait and wait and wait. When she finally arrived she immediately began her work. She found a place to live and started to gather information without trying to mask her presence somehow. When she made her first move and hunted down her first gnome binder, she learned her mistake. She was being hunted down, she was moving from cover to cover trying to lose her pursuers for many days before she finaly lost them when she used body of woman of her height and burned it down with some of her things. She disguised herself as her victim and went into hiding for over two months. She started to change her identities regulary to avoid suspicion and only after this time of waiting she dared to start gathering information again, but more carefully now. It was school of hard knocks, but she survived.

You entered the SI! You are better at sneaking and with Dark Stalker feat you should be hard to detect. Death attack is the ability we want to focus on and it is up since your 6th level. Use your sneaking skills to get into position, study and then strike. With TWF and more SA dice you are getting dangerous in battle. You also have access to more spells (and wands) thanks to your first level in Assassin. Getting a wand of wraithstrike to offset your poor BaB and medicore strenght score against heavily armored enemies is good idea. Get it into wandchamber on your weapon for easy access and you are golden. You are still quite squishy so don’t be the frontline warrior.

Kirris was gathering information, she was using her divine talents and buying magic items that could help her in her quest. She didn’t kill any of the gnomes since her first failure even though it was over a year now. Instead she was working secretly, she was in touch and working for thieves guild and with some gangs living in the city, but she never showed her true face to anyone. She always wore disguise covering her whole body, not showing even a piece of her black skin, and masked her face with a veils, masks or just cloth if she had to. And after this long time of preparation and information gathering, she finaly made her move. She knew a lot more now and was more careful, but she could afford to hunt down gnome binders in fast succesion. She learned that bounded elementals answer her and are willing to server her and she used them extensively in her work. Releasing fire elementals to get their retribution and casting her own fire spells but never being seen, she was quickly given nickname, the Unseen Flame. When she went on mission, she made sure that her mark is dead and nothing but ashes remain behind her.

And during this period, she founded various coppies of one journal that was teaching gnomes how to bind elementals. She studied these journals and other artifacts from Xen’drik and Khorvair she was able to obtain. Her knowledge of magic was growing and she was more and more sure where to look for the journal of Dojurn. She continued her hunt for binders while using her magic to get more information.

You are getting better and better at scouting and sneaking. You also hit the level where you get access to your lvl4 spells for archivist. Depending on your DM this could mean a lot if you are given the opportunity to write down from various sources and not just standard cleric spells. Anyway, you should have one of your lvl 4 spell slots reserved for teleportation spell of some sort so you can use Dimensional Jaunt to get pass many obstacles and it is there so you don’t have to use your Fateful stride on short distance teleports. With that and good sneaking you should be able to get your death attack quite regulary if you can before the combat starts. With ability focus and good int score the DC for it should be quite good, and there are items that make it even better. Sacred flame goes well with the theme of this character and it helps your damage output a bit. Uncanny dodge from assassin level is there to help you a bit should you get into troublesome combat situation.

She killed many gnomes. Her blade was turning red again and again, she burned down many laboratories, she released many elementals and obtained various artifacts that was powerful and significant to her believe into the Promise of Flame. The journal of Dojurn was still elusive though. She searched for it, she used her magic, but she had no luck. Untill the day she visited one of the local gangs, who were talking about secret transport of some treasure. She quickly gathered more information about it as she already knew what to look for and where.

Preparations were short, but she was ready for the action. She unleashed her fire spells on the bunch of dwarves and gnomes carrying a very sturdy box through secret tunels below the city. With help of freed elementals she quickly dispose of the guards and claimed her prize. The journal of Dojurn was finaly hers. She went into hiding again, warding herself from divination magic as best as she could. And then she heard the news. Gnome binders were having a secret meeting and she knew it will be her chance to chop off the head of the binders knowledge. She prepared a plan and also planned how to escape the city on the same night. She got a beautiful idea how to throwing the gnomes into conspiracy theories and maybe even forcing them into war with another dragonmarked house. She smiled slyly and contacted her last elemental friend that owed her a favor. The plan to make her mark was set and she was just waiting for the right time to begin her attack...

Congratulations on getting to lvl 20! It has been long and hard road, but you are here. Your death attack DC should be pretty good as should be your sneaking and scouting skills. You have good spellcraft to know what you are facing and you finaly have bluff score that’s worth using. Your SA dice is usable, if not as good as pure rogues, you have two sets of spells at your disposal (and both are based on your inteligence). Unholy immolation is neat to not leave behind any trace when killing and your last feat – staggering strike – gives you a bit of time to undo the mistake of not killing your target in first hit as it forces him fortitude save vs damage dealt or be staggered.

Spoiler: Recommended equipement and build comments
    Show

This build was made so it could be comparable to spellthief or a bit better. It was aiming for tier 4 from the start. It has some spells to make it’s life easier, it has some sneak attack dice and reasonable amount of skills. Your party should know that you are a scout-type not skill-monkey-trap-type as you are quite specialized. With forgery, gather information, disguise and bluff you should be able to get into places otherwise unaccessible to you, but those skills will be usualy at medicore level for most of your life. You have wider spell selection due to being both archivist and assassin. You can cast in light armor withouth any problem and that is all you need as you probably want to keep your evasion up. Black Flame Zealot’s imunity to fear is always handy, poison is good-ish at low levels but tends to be left behind at later levels. Still, if you have some reliable way of getting poison (party member’s animal companion, psionic character willing to use minor psionic creation for you) you should use it before doing death attacks to bring saving throws down. Fateful stride is used mainly to get away from bad situation or past some obstacle. Later on you use it for the same thing but you are saving it for longer distances as you have unlimited usage of Dimensional Jaunt at your disposal. Sacred flame is nice buff for your damage output, but considering the level you are getting it at, many enemies will be most likely imune to it already. Unholy immolation is nifty ability. Kill your enemies and don’t worry about their bodies anymore. They will not be going back from their graves anymore to hunt you down! Death attack was the main focus of this character. Stacking Black Flame Zealot and Assassin levels to get higher DC seemed like a good place to start. Archivist is esentialy int based class (though wisdom is good to have if you want more spells per day) as can be Rogue and Assassin who bases his spells on inteligence too. This makes inteligence your main stat, with dexterity as your secondary.

Items are not really needed to make this build work, but they make its life a lot easier. Int boosting items and tomes are first things you should look for. Gloves of the Balanced Hand (MoF) helps you to be better melee fighter by improving your TWF skill. Bracers of Murder (DotU) are another nice item and are quite cheap too. If you can combine them with (refluffed) Bracers of Hunter (SoX) you have very nice item that helps your intiative, sneak attack, flanking, sneaking and rises DC for your death attack. Hat of Disguise (DMG) and Vestment of Many Styles (RoE) will help you with your disguise needs. Forgery kit (CAd) and Forger’s paper (CS) with your hight inteligence and few points in forgery should get you almost everywhere. In Eberron, you might ask your DM for a custom item of Arcane Mark 1/day (should be cheap) so you can use your forgery to get to even otherwise unaccessible places. Collar of Umbral Metamorphosis (continuous) (ToM) is very handy as well. HiPS is good to have, even if it is the weakest form of it, and bonuses to hide, move silently and speed are always welcome. Mindblank item (such as Third Eye Conceal (MIC)) are pricy but very handy. Same with getting flight (unless you get the graft). After that only weapon and armor of choice, some consumables and you are good to go. There is one item that you will probably want but might not get your hands on as it is from Dragon Magazine (#330). It’s called Goggles of Scrutiny and it reduces your observation time for death attack to 2 rounds. Not amazing, but it’s something. Otherwise, get a wand of Deathsight spell, which will allow you to do death attack withouth preparation time.

James Warren was born to a normal family in Dalelands where he was raised in a cult like organization that worshipped Pelor the 'burning god' (the sun is burning right?) and his faithful servant Kossuth the black flame (which represented the sun spots on the sun). James wanted to preach the gospel and teach people that through burning, poisoning, and sacrificial stabbings they could reach a higher plane of existence.

He walked through a portal and ended up in Sigil, and there he saw his true calling, to spread to gospel to all of the planes.

Highlights @ 5. The Deacon (under undetectable alignment) goes to the center of towns and preaches the glory of the Pelor and that all things are cleansed through Fire and true devotees to Pelor should burn themselves in his holy fire. Songbird automagically makes them 'favorably inclined' when they hear the Deacon preach (assuming that means Friendly), from there a Diplomacy check to influence them of 20 is needed to make them Helpful with 8 from skills, 2 from Racial, 5 from Cha and 5 from Motivated Charisma, 3 from skill focus, 2 from Negotiator, 2 from bluff, 2 from sense motive, and 1 from Songbird, the minimum is 31 and the average is 40.5. Either way the true religion of Pelor is spreading forth.

James continued his ministry and accepted a role as an Evangelist where he would travel to planes and establish churches to the burning god and his servants.

Highlights @ 10 very similar to level 5 but the bonuses are even higher there 5 more in ranks, can take a 10, 2 from Knowledge (nobility) for a diplomacy of 47. As a full round action he can make a Hostile creature Friendly, without any ands ifs or buts. Furthermore, he is convincing Clerics, Paladins, Nobles, etc. of the true nature of Pelor with a Will DC 20 or convert. His ability to 'inflame the righteous' shows that Pelor wants his followers to be close to fire. Kossuth the honorable servant of the true Pelor has started instructing the Deacon on the methods to sacrifice to Pelor, by sneaking into people's rooms at night and stabbing them with a ritualistic Kukri 2 times for 2d4+4d6 damage (or a coupe de grace), and then lighting their houses on fire so their souls could ascend with the smoke. The helpful helpers put the poison he brews into the food and drinks of clerics that preach differently.

He also joined the Interplanar Thespians Guild to help his Oratory abilities so that he could preach the glory of fire, poison and stabbing better.

Highlights @ 15. This is a continuation of above but with 5 more ranks, and additional Cha bonus (+2 with motivate), +2 Favored, +4 Eagles Splendor, +4 Mask of the Ideal. His diplomacy is now 64, which turns Friendly in Fanatics (all who hear his preaching). He is spreading the Zeal of the true nature of Pelor. Hostiles are now Helpful. Those who don't are held down by his helpfuls so that he can execute his death attack for the glory of Pelor the burning god.

His abilities to convince everyone of Pelor's true nature and desires for mortals was well received and he was made the Guildmaster of the IPTG and a senior member of the Black Flame Church. His building of fanatics grew into the thousands, and he gathered all his followers to a location known as Heaven's' Gate where under a fiery meteor he had all his followers and himself drink poison that he crafted while the temple was on fire, making a pyre for his whole congregation. After his death he found that his belief of Pelor was wrong.

Highlights @ 20. The level of fanaticism is there with 5 more ranks 2 more from Cha/Motivate, 2 from Guild Master, his checks are now 71. Now that he was blessed with immolation he now has his fanatics drink Elemental rime which does 1d4 dex damage and makes them vulnerable to fire, and once they are weakened he systematically sneak attacks them with (3 attacks at 1d4 +5d6 sneak attack and 1d6 fiery kukri) so that their souls are absorbed by the fire and their souls reach Pelor.

High Flamelord Iphegor Nath was puzzled. The Lord of Flames was never one easy to understand and he was never very talkative. This time though, this vision... It was overwhelming. He immeadiately summoned his most trustworthy agent, Siltha, leader of the Black Flame Zealots, Kossuth's aspect of destruction. „Siltha, the Firelord has granted me a vision. I have found the aspect of suffering.“ Siltha stood still awaiting the reveal. She never was one to be impressed easily. Nath would have hoped for a more appropriated reaction. Him being Kossuth's aspect of fire and High Flamelord, he decided to find the missing aspects of Kossuth, suffering and renewal, to unite all of them and thereby help the Lord of Flames to further increase in power on toril. „Did you bring the map?“ Siltha nodded and pulled out a map of the Thayan region. Nath visualized what Kossuth has showed him and pointed on the map. „There, the Sunrise Mountains. We will find the aspect of suffering, there. We will have to dig a while, but he is there.“ Finally Siltha spoke: „Dig?“ „Yes, my dear. He is trapped in a collapsed Rhaumatar ruin. As far as i could see he was part of an expedition to secure ancient treasures. While he was reading through ancient texts in a former library a ceiling collapsed and he was left behind and cut off every possible exit. He used all the information in the library available and was able to survive by finding an ancient magic installement producing unlimited food and water. I'm not sure why, but the library also included texts about your organization.“ Siltha interrupted him politely: „A brother of ours had to hide from the red wizards a long time ago. It has been said that he hid in a Rhaumatar ruin.“ „I guess the aspect of suffering did find his hideout then. He made good use of the written teachings of your brother. The Lord of Flames granted me the vision of the aspect slaying all the monsters in the ruins, claiming the whole complex for The Firelord, but still he couldn't find a way out. The Rhaumatar seem to have magically secured their former fortress. The only way to get him out is to remove the collapsed stones. We will dig him out.“ Siltha nodded. „High Flamelord, how long has he been there?“ „I can't say for sure, but considering the image Kossuth has given me I'd say decades.“

    Spells Known
Normally this would be presented in a table. In this case though a table is simply put of little use.
With the third level of archivist the prayerbook contains all 0 level spells, 9 first level spells and 2 second level spells of the cleric spell list. Since none of the spells are essential to this build assume spells every cleric would pick up. After level 4 you never again gain new spells unless you copy them from scrolls. The fun thing is: you can add ANY divine spell. This means you have the option of obtaining exclusive spells, spells at a lower level than usual and much more. Long story short: check the spell section of the archivist handbook.
Two example spells to get an iconic BFZ feel, which aren't on the cleric spell list:
Summon Natures Ally to summon fire elementals as flanking buddies
Hunter's eye for more sneak attack damage

    Breakdown
    Spoiler
    Show

In general the build tries to mimic a very classic Black Flame Zealot but I was trying to do something mechanically different to achieve a more interesting result. The Black flame zealot as portrayed fights with double kukris. So does Oizys but he does so by using Maneuvers (Wolf Fang strike, even Shadow blade technique can be refluffed that way) instead of the rather subpar two weapon fighting feats. Oizys is an archivist rather than a Wis or Cha based divine caster to be able to dump those stats and reduce MADness. With Wis 10 Oizys forfeits bonus spells but the strength of an archivist is the same as that of a wizard: versatility in spells and being able to prepare for pretty much everything ahead. The theme of the build is not destruction but rather suffering.

    Up to level 5
Oizys is a skillmonkey on the first level. Then changes his role to a supportive caster. Int based casting for save DC means Oizys can focus on some debuffing action too, but I'd generally recommend going for utility casting. The warblade dip has minor Int synergy grants proficiency with the kukri and offers some handy maneuvers. Wolf Fang strike and Blood in the water help mimicking the double kukri fighting style, sudden leap is always a nice movement buff. The feats are nothing spectacular: Darkstalker is a given, Iron Will a Requirement for BFZ. Shadow Blade Technqiue is mostly picked up to get Hide as a Class Skill but also helps overcome a very low to hit chance.

    Up to level 10
Oizys enters BFZ as early as possible. This guarantees that Death attack stays relevant for some time before the average fort save on enemies explodes. Zealous heart prevents another obvious feat pick up: Craven. So Oizys focuses on debuffing and making his enemies „suffer“ for their sins. Sickening strike is the first step in that direction. Divine Denial uses Iron Will and can be a life saver.

    Up to level 15
Terrifying strike furthers Oizys debuffing potential. Sacred flame is actually not so bad as i thought at fist glance. Since activating the flame burst ability you might get away with activating it after you rolled attack. Check with your DM. Else you get a free weapon enchant. As soon as you have acces to 4th level spells you stop progressing in BFZ and pick up Divine Disciple. Without a doubt by ECL 14 you are a known leader in Kossuths following so the Lord of Fire chose you to be his disciple and his aspect of suffering. The full casting progression helps when the game usually becomes more and more „spell heavy“. Sacred defense has nice synergy with divine denial. Finally Improved Critical (kukri) is of course chosen for pure style but still can be swapped out via Warblades weapon aptitude to something less iconic.

    Up to level 20
The last three levels of Divine Disciple gives you Imbue with spell ability, domain spells and Domain power (Suffering of course) and finally Transcedence. O Lord is Oizys blessed! Before finishing BFZ and picking up Unholy immolation, Twist the knife is the follow up to the improved critical feat and while it is rather bad mechanically it fits storywise perfectly.

    Notes on Oizys personality
    Spoiler
    Show

Oizys is Lawful neutral. He is neither cruel nor evil, but has suffered significantly himself and doesn't hesitate to let someone suffer if being ordered by a superior or Kossuth himself. He sees suffering as a path to enlightenment. If being treated respectfully he can be very kind and helpful but doesn't like people complaining over things he doesn't consider really worth complaining about.

    Variations
    Spoiler
    Show

As a little twist Oizys could make a pretty fun dungeon encounter. Transcendence allows Oizys to pick up levels of Dungeon Lord. You could swap 2 levels of BFZ for 2 levels of Dungeon Lord. If you keep the presented background story but never have Oizys released from his unfortunate prison, you could make his prison his home. Fully identifying with the dungeon and converting it into a tempel for Kossuth he can be pretty much everything you want thanks to his lawful/neutral alignment.
Also the build is pretty flexible in his feat choices as the only one set in stone is Iron Will and therefor can be greatly adjusted. I.e. Venomous strike can be picked up instead of terrifying or sickening strike. Also thanks to a lot of skill points you can fulfill multiple roles including face and scout if your playgroup needs it.

After all, as a traitor of the temple, you surely know of our tenets and codes - otherwise you would not have known how to break them. In recognition for your sins against the Destroyer, I, Mona Hearthfire, will cleanse your soul. Your essence shall return to Taiia, so that it may be used for a soul of greater worth than you.

    ...

I wonder, do you regret the way you sacrificed your life, heretic? Did you truly think that Taiia's true aspect was of the Creator, even after your brethren were purged? You should have ran, abandoning your homeland to bond with those who remained. At least then you wouldn't be bound here, flayed into an inch of your life, as punishment for your interference. The campaign would have continued, were it not for you. But that is all the recognition you deserve.

It would have been a glorious plan. My companions would have swept the landscape, raiding every temple of your false faith that we passed. I would have led from the shadows, bending shadows, incarnum and magic to striking down the greatest targets while those same companions disposed of the common rabble. I heard of a man named Julian, a justicar of the Creater aspect, far to the north. He would have been first.

    You have taken his place.

I'm sure Taiia, after she has devoured your soul, will thank you for your efforts.
After all, you did the best you could. It just wasn't good enough.

    Maneuvers
These are granted via the Martial Study and Martial Stance feats, and therefore have no progression.

    Spoiler: Progression
    Show
    Level 5: Initiate of Taiia
Mona begins to sacrifice her spellcasting potential for martial skills. Dual wielding kukris and enjoying reasonable bonuses to attack and damage via Knowledge Devotion and Weapon Finesse, she makes a competent combatant. The Cloak of Deception maneuver serves as either an escape mechanism or as a method of gaining a surprise round on an unsuspecting target, depending on the situation.

Her divine spellcasting will be used primarily for buffing, with notables including Shield of Faith, Summon Monster I and II, Bless, Conviction and Divine Favor. Invisibility and Disguise Self have situational use as domain spells.

    ------------------------------------

    Level 10: Disciple of Taiia
Having learned of the Black Flame, Mona turns her attention to perfecting the skills needed to obtain and maintain membership. Law Devotion can be used to grant gefty bonuses to AC, but can also be used to help her land hits despite her poor BAB. Assassin's Stance gives her some extra sneak attack dice to play with. Embrace of Shadow grants 10% concealment per invested essentia, and as an added bonus grants Hide in Plain Sight at 20% concealment. Sept Knowledge can be used to grant her a temporary +2 or +5 bonus to her Knowledge skills, adding further value to Knowledge Devotion. Zealous Heart is a nice bonus, regardless of her good Will saves.

Although her focus on subterfuge has caused her spellcasting skills to wane, she still manages to get some practice in. In addition to the spells she used at level 5, she begins to employ Magic Vestment, Bull's Strength, Lesser Visage of the Deity and possibly Summon Monster III, which could find some use as a flanking buddy.

    ------------------------------------

Level 15: Destroyer of Taiia (Also the Sweet Spot)
Mona works to improve her divine spellcasting alongside her deadly stealth. Improved Two-Weapon Fighting grants her another attack to use her sneak attack damage dice with, and Shadow Blade grants her a huge boost in basic attack damage which scales with her dexterity modifier. While Sacred Flame lacks a duration or limit to its number of uses per day or at once, its default use still grants an extra 1d6 fire damage to at least one of her weapons (while fire is a commonly resisted element, it could still be situationally useful). Fateful Stride offers an alternative escape mechanism to Cloak of Deception, as well as generally improving her mobility.

Her spellcasting remains situational, although there are a few choice spells she can consistently fall back on. Death Ward has its obvious benefits, and Divine Power can temporarily circumvent the BAB issue entirely while granting some extra attack damage and temporary HP. Air Walk and Freedom of Movement, while useful, have effects which can easily be replicated by items. Spell Immunity, Tongues and Protection From Energy also have their uses.

    Level 20: Devourer of Taiia
A devoted servant to her cause, Mona perfects her tools. Greater Two-Weapon Fighting gives her another attack to use, and she receives the maximum 40% concealment from Embrace of Shadow. Her Knowledges cap out at +16 to Local, +15 to Arcana, +8 to Dungeoneering and +20 to Religion, granting her large attack and damage bonuses against most creatures. Her sneak attack dice can reach a total of 7d6, and she has +21 base hide and move silently.

She gains another level of spellcasting, but at this point her spells are of relatively small influence. Divinations are likely the best use of her magic, although some of her buffs from earlier levels remain relevant (See: Divine Power).

    • There is no prohibition on clerics trading more than one domain for additional domain feats, although there is a limit of 3. Anubis was born to a family of exiled Marrulurks, son of a violent father and a weak mother, far away from their kin’s usual environment. Instead of the sand and cactus, Anubis grew up on a tropical island, in a mostly Halfling-populated settlement, at the foot of a looming threat: a large and, hopefully, dormant, volcano. Anubis spent most of his days with halflings roughly his age, teaching them stealth while they taught him throwing. One day, the young halflings, whose parents were native to the island, started leaving camp to explore the island and join the hunting and gathering effort. However, Anubis’s parents being much outside their comfort zone, they forbade their pup from leaving camp, for his own security: who knew the dangers that could be lurking in the jungle! Plus, the volcano had always intrigued him.

Like all kids, after his parents gave an order, he did his best to do the exact opposite, and left camp as often as he could: first, it was once a week. Then, twice a week. Then, every other day. Eventually, Anubis was caught, and his father punished him the only way he knew how: he went to the beach, dug a hole in the sand, and stuck Anubis in it, only letting his head stand out. Then, he went back to camp, leaving his son trapped next to the sea, vulnerable.

It took less than three hours before lava started flowing down from the volcano’s open maw, engulfing everything in its path: it was quite a wonderful show. While he couldn’t see it, Anubis knew his village had been burnt to the ground by the volcano’s raw, flowing, uncontrollable power. Screw them. Screw him. That idiot had only done one thing right in his life, and that was going back to the village to die.

It took a long time before Anubis could get out of the sand. Luckily, the lava hadn’t reached the beach. Anubis didn’t have time to grieve his Halfling friends, nor the intention of grieving his parents: he needed to focus on his survival. He had learned to know the island, but after the eruption, much of it had changed. Food would be scarce; he’d have to go to the far side of the island, probably filled with wild beasts of incommensurable power.

After a few days of walking without finding much to eat nor drink, Anubis was almost going to give up when he found a small group of humans. Hiding from them, Anubis listened, trying to learn who they were. He followed them to a small camp. There, Anubis risked everything, and tried to sneak into camp to steal some food. He almost made it through the loaded camp. Luckily for him, rather than getting angry at him, the villagers were impressed at the creature who snuck into camp without them noticing.

That night, the men talked, and Anubis learnt. He learnt that the Volcano was not only a mountain, but a God, the great Joramy. It didn’t take long before Anubis fell into the clan’s holy books, and then apprenticed under the clan’s priest, hoping to gain a portion of the volcano’s power.

Eventually, men in black clothing appeared on the island, demanding to speak to Anubis. As a master of Stealth, a born assassin, and a devout follower of Joramy, Anubis could be admitted as a member of the prestigious Black Flame Zealots, assassins working for the advancement of the church. Of course, there was one last condition to fulfill… as the men in black told Anubis he needed to take a first life to show his dedication to the cause, Anubis looked at them, thoughtful, arms crossed, for about half a minute. Then, in the spur of a second, he lunged towards one, plunging his kukri deep into the man’s throat before he had the time to react.

    “When do I start?”

    The men in black grinned.

    Well, one of them didn’t.

    Spoiler: Level Breakdown
    Show

5th level: Just entering Clericdom at this point, Anubis is a specialist of ambushes: he’ll hide somewhere, studying his victim: if the victim comes with charge range of him without noticing him, Anubis charges in for a death attack (DC18, pretty weak considering an average Fortitude save of +7.47 at this level); if not, he simply takes out his bow, rapid-shotting his target (hopefully with Sneak Attack). He uses his spells mainly for X-strikes, and, sometimes, for Rhino’s Rush (which he gains from the Wrath Domain).

10th level: Anubis is just about to enter the ranks of the Black Flame Zealots. By this time, his racial Death attack is not nearly as useful as before (DC of 18 still, against average save at +11.63 means a 26% chance of success after 3 rounds of waiting), but still, if it can be set up, why not. Anubis can also use his Bloodstorm Blade ability to make these attacks from a distance: this also means that, coupled with Rapid Shot, he can throw 3 “weapons” per round, each of them forcing a Fortitude save: the chance of success increases to nearly 60%. Also, Anubis now considers everything a weapon, which is very helpful for an assassin who does not have to carry weapons, and also not to be seen as a threat – a necessity to activate Death Attack. Imagine the following: you walk into an inn, and everyone is eating. 18 seconds later, a hyena-faced man throws an apple, a chair and a mug at you. You die. If the target is, for some reason, not surprised, then Anubis can use Sapphire Nightmare Blade to make his opponent Flat Footed, allowing him to activate Death Attack.

15th level: Now it gets interesting: BFZ’s Death attack states that “If a black flame zealot has this class feature from another class (such as assassin), he may add black flame zealot class levels together with the class levels of such other classes to calculate the save DC of his death attack .” Anubis already has Death Attack, but not from another class. Marrulurk also grants Death Attack, which does not stack with any other source of Death Attack: therefore, their levels do not stack, and they are separate abilities (allowing Anubis to have two different instances of Ability Focus, one on each of its two similarly named Death Attack abilities. Also, the description of the ability (from the original Assassin) states that: “While studying the victim, the assassin can undertake other actions so long as his attention stays focused on the target”. Therefore, Anubis can study his victims to set up his racial Death Attack, which allows him to undertake other actions: he chooses to also study his victim to set up his class-given Death Attack (which, when that is important, also allows him to undertake other actions). Which means that when he activates Death Attack (which, as stated before, he can do rather easily between not-necessitating weapons and, if necessary, Sapphire Nightmare Blade), the target must make two saves for each attack, the first at DC16, and the second at DC19 (more if he takes the time to buff before). If Anubis can launch a full attack (which he should wait to be able to do), that means a total of 8 saves. Even with low DCs for the level (the average CR15 monster needs to roll a 1 to miss the first), this is a 58% chance of success on CR-appropriate monsters, which raises to an awesome total of 82% if he casts fox’s cunning and eagle’s splendor before. After killing a mark, Anubis can simply get away from the scene with fateful stride.
20th level: Anubis is now a complete assassin. In addition to his previously presented Death Attack abilities (DCs are now 16 and 25), he also can now milk his own poison (from Animal Devotion)whenever he is somewhere he cannot get some through more… social means. If in a game with LA-buyoff, Anubis can take another level of Warblade for some new maneuvers, and a 5th attack in a full attack, for 2 more saves against Death Attack. Black Flame Zealot’s Sacred Flame also allows Anubis to make anything he throws flaming (as they are considered melee attacks), meaning that in addition to the base damage of whatever he can find to throw, he would deal an extra 30d6 damage, between Sneak Attack and the flaming abilities. Finally, to make Anubis the perfect assassin, he can make marks much harder to bring back from the dead, thanks to Unholy immolation.

Before she was born the one who was her father a great general of the land was lost, a causualty of war and love. Her mother raised her the best she could in the wild where she would be safe from the toils of war. But it seems that even that could not stop the war from reaching them, one day while still young she was placed in a secret place with enough supplies to last a while, known only to a few animals and her mother, she knew it would only be a matter of time before the enemy would find her and she knew that her only daughter had to be protected at all costs. she went to great effort to conceal the location from all forms of natural as well as magical detections, and with that bought her daughters life by leading the enemy far away to her demise. Through her mothers teachings while young she had enough instict with her other abilities that she was able to survive in the wild for several years undetected and unknown to the ways of the world, she decided one day to go off and explore the great unknown of the eastern portion of the forest where it turned brown and the green trees ceased to grow, it was there that she wandered into the first of civilization as she would come to know it. where at the first light of dawn she came accross a couple who were in need of assistance, without thinking she decided to help them in every way she could, After helping the couple who learned that she had nothing, they decided to take her in as their own and teach her the things she would need to know, Some months later they formally adopted her as their own daughter. they also became her teachers, where she learned the divine arts and refined her combat powness. It was not until years later that she learned that the couple who she now called her parents were of noble birth and when she reached adulthood her parents held a grand ball in her honor where they gave her the title of Lady Dawntracker.

And that's everything. Apparently, my 2 week option was closed, so I didn't count those submitted in the first week when I called this our smallest crop.

    Whoops.

Anyways, that's everything that I got. As usual, let me know if I made an error.

Some pretty good builds at first glance, but I haven't had a chance to do anything but look at the build stubs.

I was trying to get a Scout1/Shaman3/SS1/BFZ10/Telleflamer4/SS+1 to work, but I just didn't have enough feats to make it workable even if I replaced the first SS level with Shaman4.

Yeah I was thinking a lot about Druid/Blighter/Warshaper/BFZ but then figured so many people would be doing it for the 100 attack sneak attack pounce and the 7th level spells.

I am surprised at the high number of Justicars.

My other build was going to be something along the lines of an Ur-Priest, using the Dead God adaptation, and Heretic of the Faith feat with Utu, changing his Good domain to Death, and weapon to Kukri.

    Duskblade 3/Dragon Shaman 2/Ur Priest 2/Black Flame Zealot 10/Spell Dancer 1/Contemplative 1/Divine Oracle 1.

Outside of dancing around the fire to gain the usual Metamagic tricks, there wasn't much else I had planned for it, but you couldn't really go wrong with 9th level spells and Metamagic (Quicken+Fell Drain on Fire Spells, and obviously Extend+Persist buffs), 2 Domains (Oracle; seeing stuff in the flame, Fire Domain for theme).

Iron Will Synergy from Ur-Priest and BFZ.

Duskblade channels attacks through his Kukri's.

we actually have a bunch of justiciars of taiia, which is a different class from regular justiciar, which we had as a SI here a while back.

Rogue and Cleric seem to be popular choices, but I'm surprised at how few Rogue/Clerics there are. Maybe the obvious choices got passed over by most people because they seemed too obvious?

Yep, that's what usually happens here due to originality being a component of the scoring.

The build I almost went with (but didn't) was: Ninja 1 / Cloistered Cleric 2 / Shadowspy 6 / Radiant Servant of Pelor 1 / Black Flame Zealot 10.

Using Heretic of the Faith to revere Pelor as the Burning Hate and get the Fire Domain. And Using the big pool of turning attempts to fire trickery devotion and strength devotion giving a hidden weapon and a good way of scouting.

Yeah, I Vizzini'd myself out of a Cobra Strike Monk/Archivist/Telflammar Shadowlord. Instead, it morphed into my second build that never came to fruition: a Fire Genasi (for weapon proficiencies) Monk 1/Archivist 3/Totemist 2/Umbral Disciple 3/BFZ 10. He was going to Blink Shirt/Fateful Stride along with Sun School to Death Attack after teleporting, as well as using the Open Greater Chakra feat w/ Phoenix Belt to get infinite healing out of Sacred flame. Aside from those two tricks, he didn't really have much going on so I tabled him in favor of my other build.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. Onto a list of builds:

I was planning on a Gray Elf Binder 1/Archivist 4/Seeker of the Misty Isle 2/BFZ 10/Divine Anima Mage 3. I was going to call it Rook (named after the black bird similar to ravens) and give the backstory a big chess theme, but ran out of time.

    Feats:
    1 Improved Binding
3 Planar Touchstone (Catalogues of Enlightenment)
    6 Iron Will
    9 Cumbrous Will
    12 Eschew Materials
    15 Knowledge Devotion
    18 Practiced Spellcaster

Use Malphas's Sudden Strike to qualify for the SI, because Sudden Strike works that way. Use Cumbrous Will to supercharge Will saves, free of charge from Zealous Heart. Planar Touchstone is keyed to the Travel Domain to get enough Survival to enter SotMI, but once entering that class, change it to Knowledge Domain via the built-in provision of the feat (so it's no longer a feat tax). SotMI grants the kukri proficiency and Hide/MS as class skills necessary for BFZ. At 14th level, switch the Planar Touchstone to the Pride Domain and enter the Shriver from Fiendish Codex II. The game uses your lower-by-one Will save for the saving throws, but you use Cumbrous Will every time to make it so that you're basically guaranteed to get the fourth ability. Then escape with Fateful Stride and switch back to the Knowledge Domain. Eschew Materials allows free poisons.

When preparing for combat, douse yourself in alcohol and oleum, then cast Favor of the Martyr and use Sacred Flame to set yourself on fire as a free action and explode everything within whatever radius your DM allows. Sacred Flame is particularly useful here because it's a free action to do this.

Death Attack is really easy to use when you can observe through Malphas's bird from around the corner, then turn invisible and charge. There's Int synergy with Archivist and Knowledge Devotion, too.

Unholy Immolation completely consumes the target; it's pretty strong wording. So just give your cursed items, evil MacGuffins, and ancient forbidden unspeakable artifacts of doom to Malphas's bird and stab it. Boom, inconveniences gone.

Divine Anima Mage lets you throw away Malphas's Poison Use for a bonus 7th-level slot, completely cost-free because BFZ also gives you Poison Use.

With Malphas, a casting of Hunter's Eye, and BFZ's sneak attack, this build gets +11d6 bonus damage, which is more than a straight Rogue.

I had three dishes in mind for this one, but barely managed to squeek one in due to time constraints. It's just as well, both builds are present here (one is almost identical to one of my unsubmitted ideas, save that the build here lacks the Telling Blow feat). I'm honestly surprised at the large numbers of Rangers, and utterly stumped that there weren't more Archivists (I thought it was a shoe-in for the Int Synergy).

Since I'm a twitchy Iron Chef junkie, I'm pleased to admit that the spreadsheet is finally up to date with scores from every judge on every entry and links to the builds. Links to judges and notes for builds that took Honorable Mention are a work in progress. As always, I'm in need of folks w/ free time to continue translating those numbers into write-ups for the Hall of Heroes. [/shamelessplug]

I wanted to make a Synad Psychic Rogue 1/Druid 4/BFZ 2/Blighter 5/BFZ +8 follower of Garyx, whose 3 minds had gone mad in 3 different directions (temptatively using Depravities from Heroes of Horror)... but aside from some fluff and 9th level spells, it didn't look like it had much to offer.

I considered Lurk/Ardent as a lead-in where I would have to brute force the casting requirements with various Ardent Magic Mantle tricks. Ultimately, the tricks would have overshadowed the build, I think.

You might not have noticed, but there's a new phrase or two in the OP that might be worth reviewing... including a ban on Taint unless needed for the SI.

It says 'please refrain', that isn't quite a ban, unless your wish is our command. I'd suggest it should be moved into the flaw category (unless the SI needs it) because its basically a free feat too.

BTW, on Maximus Locae they missed the BAB increase from 4th to 5th level. Only reason I'm saying this is because it gives them the 16 BAB for the 4th attack at level 20.

That's not a bad suggestion - I'll consider it. I asked competitors to refrain as a courtesy, trying to be polite. More of an iron fist inside a velvet glove, if you will.

It is an Iron Chef competition, not a pansy twinkle toed prancy dancy pixie magiced velet chef competition, nothing feels more Iron Chef than the Iron Grip of the Chairman squeezing the necks of the competitors.

Not sure about what I said, go back highlight it with your mouse and wham it's magically blue for sarcasm, so like everything on the internet take it with a grain of salt.

Oh, I didn't notice, but anyway I was just aiming for Mild Depravity (I think it was Crazed?), so just a disadvantage and no free feats, just for flavor.
