    Spoiler: Hindrun
    Show

The name of the continent (and the world) is Hindrun. It’s a little larger than Asia, and (to the knowledge of those that live there) is the only continent on their world. At this point in history, many of the smaller kingdoms have been subsumed by empires, and the local languages have been largely replaced by those of the conquerors. There are five common languages between the various places on the continent: Cymran (in the west), Nordic (in the north), Laceusian (in the center and some of the south), Orekhov (in the southeast), and Bakir (in the northeast). There are no humanoid “racial” languages like elvish or dwarven (although there are still languages like Abyssal, Auran, Draconic, etc.); people speak one or more of the regional languages instead.

Spoiler: Formal etiquette for addressing nobility in Cymru, and formal hierarchy of noble titles
    Show

    Royal titles:
Emperor/Empress - Your Highness, Your Majesty, Your Excellency, Your Grace
Ruling monarch. They weild absolute power - the Emperor's word is law.

High Prince/Princess, Heir Prince/Princess - Your Excellency, Your Grace
The heir to the throne. Their authority is only superceded by the Emperor's.

Prince/Princess - Your Excellency, Your Grace
Other members of the royal family. Their authority is roughly equal to that of a Duke - and indeed, most princes are given a duchy to rule over.

    Noble titles:
Duke/Duchess - Your Grace, Your Honor, The Honourable Lord/Lady [given name] [surname] of [homeland]
The highest noble title, often reserved for royalty. They have authority in their duchy given by the Emperor or High Prince.

Marquess/Marchioness - Your Honor, The Honourable Lord/Lady [given name] [surname]
Military title that may be awarded by a Duke (or higher rank) to a noble that is (at minimum) a Viscount.

Earl/Earlesse - Your Honor, The Honourable Lord/Lady [given name] [surname]
    Administrative/Bureaucratic equivalent of Marquess.

Count/Countess - Your Honor, Lord/Lady [given name] or [surname]
Title inherited by the national head of a noble family. They hold some clout in the royal court, but only have authority over land they own.

    Viscount/Viscountess - Lord/Lady [given name] or [surname]
Title inherited by the regional head of a noble family. They may be awarded the title of Earl or Marquess if they provide a great service to their Duke.

    Baron/Baroness - Lord/Lady [given name] or [surname]
Title for any landed noble, or the head of an estate. They may rise up to Viscount or Count with support from their family, but those titles are generally inherited.

    Non-noble titles:
    Knight - Sir/Dame [given name]
Military title that may be awarded by a noble of at least Count status.

    --
    Other:
Nobles without formal titles - Mister/Miss/Missus (for married women) [surname], Sir/Miss/Madam (for married women) [given name]
Noble children who are not of age - by Master/Miss [given name].

    Spoiler: Cymru and Other Empires/Regions
    Show

(all cultures can be assumed to be fantasy medieval unless stated otherwise)

You’ll be starting in one of the northern regions of Cymru, an empire that stretches along nearly the entire western coast of the continent. Cymru is bounded by the Navarre mountain range on its east side (and a bit to the south), and the ocean on all other sides. There are some (largely) unclaimed territories on the northeast side of the mountains. The empire has somewhat of a Gaelic/Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian culture (not exclusively or exceptionally so, though), although noticeably more civilized than say, the Vikings (or the Scots, for that matter). Humans are the dominant race, but elves and dwarves aren’t too uncommon (dwarves being more common in the north, and elves more common in the south). All natives speak Cymran, and Nordic is a common second language for people living in north Cymru. Someone from the South might speak Laceusian.

Across the mountains in the South lies Zelles. Laceusian is the common language there – Nordic is often spoken in the north, and Cymran is often spoken in the west by the mountains or by the coast. The country has a western Mediterranean culture, closer to France than to Spain. Demographically, the country is nearly evenly divided between humans and elves, and other races are rare but not unheard-of. Dwarves are a bit more common in the North.

East of Zelles is Liguria. Again, Laceusian is the common language – Nordic being a common second language spoken in the north, and Orekhov in the south. The country has a central/eastern Mediterranean culture, somewhat akin to Italy or Greece. The northern boundary of the empire is a poorly-defined line in the middle of a large desert, although little conflict has come of the border (a few skirmishes here and there). Liguria has lost several southern territories to a long-running war with Trakai (their neighbors to the south).

South of Liguria (and indeed, the rest of the continent) is Trakai. Most natives speak both Orekhov and Laceusian; Orekhov is more common in the south, while Laceusian is more common in the north (read: in the annexed Ligurian territories). Trakai’s invasion of Liguria has largely gone unaddressed, internationally. The Azuyra mountain range runs through the empire, and the southernmost parts of Trakai are bitterly cold. Demographically, the empire is very well-mixed between the common humanoid races, except for dwarves. The country overall has a Slavic culture, although the north has some slightly Balkan elements and the south some slightly Baltic ones.

Northeast of Trakai (along the east coast of the continent) is Kalmykia. Natives speak Orekhov, and Bakir (the Orissan language) is common in the north. The culture is largely Russian, with a few Ottoman-esque influences.

North of Kalmykia is Orissa. Natives speak Bakir, and both Orekhov and Nordic are common second languages. The country is predominantly human, although dwarves are fairly common in the north and to the west. Orissa has an Arabic/Hindi/Oriental culture.

Across the mountains from Orissa to the northwest is Cassel. Natives speak Nordic, although Bakir is a common second language. Demographically, the country is very well-mixed, with no dominant races. The culture is somewhat like northern/central European (think Holland or the Netherlands). The metropolis of Gi is an important religious center for nearly the entire continent, and every major religion has temples there. Pilgrimages to Gi are common in nearby nations, and not unheard-of, even in faraway lands like Trakai, Zelles, and Cymru.

Southwest of Cassel is Freisland. Natives speak Nordic, although Bakir and Laceusian are somewhat common in the east and the south (respectively), and while the population largely consists of dwarves and humans, other races aren’t too uncommon. Its border with Liguria lies somewhere in the desert to the south, although little conflict has come from this. The culture is somewhat like central European (think Austria or Germany).

The remaining land between Freisland, Cymru, and Zelles is currently unclaimed by any empire. Local “nobles”, wealthy merchants, and warlords rule over tracts of land referred to as shires. Natives speak Nordic, and Cymran and Laceusian are common second languages (the former in the north, and the latter in the south). Demographically, the unclaimed territories are very well-mixed, and the culture is similar to a dark-ages-esque Britain.

    Spoiler: The Western Pantheon
    Show

These are the commonly-worshipped gods in Cymru, Zelles, and the unclaimed northern territory. Any large city will contain temples to each (some likely hidden, others likely not), and even small towns will have shrines to most, if not all of the gods.

These are presented in a similar manner to the deity entries in the PHB – I’d be glad to explain or clarify anything, or describe something in more detail. I don’t pay a lot of attention to alignment in my games (at least in this sense), so no deity is assigned an alignment, and followers of any deity can have any alignment. (some combinations might be rare or unlikely, but none are entirely out of the question)

Therion – god of air and the skies. His titles are The Creator, the Life-Bringer, and the King of the Gods. His followers wear brown robes, and his favored weapon is the warhammer or the maul. Therion’s holy symbol is a mattock in front of a cloud, although it is often represented without the cloud. Priests of Therion are known to keep hanging gardens, and some of Therion’s temples are even suspended in the sky.
    Portfolio: Air, creation, life

Ustrina – goddess of light. Her title is the Lady of Fire. Her holy symbol is a stylized sun emblem with 12 points. She despises the undead, seeing them a plague on the world. Her clerics wear brightly coloured robes, usually red, orange, or yellow (or some combination of the three). Her clerics (even the evil ones) always turn undead. The longsword is her favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Sun, light, fire, valor

Zho – god of magic. His title is the Sage. He rarely interacts with his followers, and promotes no special causes other than the protection of knowledge. His holy symbol is a dark blue spiral shape, similar to a whirlpool. Small shrines to Zho are common in libraries, especially magical ones. His clerics usually wear simple blue robes. The quarterstaff is his favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Magic, knowledge

Aeribrar – god of order. His titles are the Judge, the Keeper, and the Watchmaker. His holy symbol is a white circle with three lines through the center, dividing it into six even sections. His temples are immaculate, constructed from white marble and steel, and his clerics wear similarly ornate white robes. The mace is his favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Order, crafting, machines

Cygnus – god of balance. His titles are the Watcher and the Master of Scales. His holy symbol is a swan, half white, half black, although other yin-yang-style symbols are commonly used. He is relatively active as far as gods go, urging his followers to set right imbalances in the cosmos. Cygnus pays little attention to the material plane, however. His clerics wear robes with a dualistic nature to them, often black-and-white. The spear is his favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Balance, outsiders

Torethen – god of nature and the world. His titles are the Woodsman and the Master of Elements. His holy symbol is an oak leaf. He himself promotes no special causes, although many of his followers have taken to protecting the natural world. His clerics often wear simple brown or green robes. The longbow is his favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Nature, humanoids

Vermiculus – god of water. His titles are the Mariner, Storm-Bringer, and the Maelstrom. His holy symbol is a fish impaled on a trident. Vermiculus urges his followers to conquer their enemies, and to respect power but to rebel against tyranny. He is commonly worshipped by sailors, warlords, and conquerors. His clerics wear blood-red robes. The trident is his favored weapon. It is custom in Cymru to pour out a bottle of red wine into the ocean before a sea voyage as an offering to Vermiculus; sometimes blood sacrifices (human and otherwise) are used as an offering instead. Vermiculus and his clergy are held in especially high esteem by the royal family and many nobles, even hundreds of miles inland.
    Portfolio: Water, storms, conquest

Ir Oni – goddess of travel and protection. Her titles are the Wayfarer and the Wanderer. Her holy symbol is a shield decorated with a silhouette of the sun setting on the horizon. Ir Oni is a benevolent goddess, and directs her followers to help and protect people unable to protect themselves. There are many roadside shrines to Ir Oni, especially in well-traveled places. Her clerics wear dark green or grey robes. The quarterstaff is her favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Travel, roads, protection

Rasua – god of deceit. His titles are the Snake, Silver-tongue, and the Phantom. His holy symbol is a hand with an open eye set into the palm. Many of his clerics have an eye tattooed onto the palm of their hand in lieu of carrying a holy symbol. He is commonly worshipped by thieves and other people prone to dishonesty. Thieves’ guilds often have a shrine to Rasua. His clerics sometimes wear grey robes, but are often in disguise. The rapier is his favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Thieves, lies, stealth

Cirda – goddess of revenge. Her title is the Unforgiving. Her holy symbol is a winged knife, and it often is depicted as stained with blood. Cirda pushes her followers to strike back at those who have wronged them. Many warriors and military strategists pray to Cirda to show them their enemies’ weaknesses. Her clerics wear dull yellow robes. The dagger is her favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Revenge, plotting, justice

Mairah – god of change. His titles are the Mad, the Dark Rider, and the End-Bringer. His holy symbol is a fly perched atop a black sphere. Mairah urges his followers to strike down authority and to find ways to change the world around them. Many revolutionaries worship Mairah. His clerics wear black robes, and the flail is his favored weapon.
    Portfolio: Anarchy, change, destruction, liberation

Spoiler: Cymran Politics and Major Cities
    Show
Cymru is ruled by Emperor Cynegels, an ancient man by human standards (104y), and he is advised by his son, Brynne, four of his generals, and the two highest-ranking members of Vermiculus’ clergy. His three grandsons each preside over a third of the empire; Wuscfrea (the eldest) presides over Nardi (the north) Gaeryn (the second child) over the Kerrenland (the extremely mountainous south), and Sinead (the youngest) over the central part of the country.

Cynegels is grim, cynical, and practical. He’s spent the first fourty or so years that he’s been in power strengthening Cymru’s economy and trade, and the last twenty waging war to expand his empire while carefully managing resources to maintain a stable economy. Cynegels is, in large part, responsible for Capel Kerig being the international trade center that it is. His people praise him for the military victories his armies achieve, and his advisors have little sway over his decisions. He knows he’s going to die soon, and has taken care not to let the nation see him out doing things in the past five or ten years – he’s had his son step in instead, as Brynne is next in line for the throne. Brynne is much like his father, but more personable and a stronger military leader (even though he has less desire to expand Cymru into the surrounding territories). He’s an accomplished soldier himself, and is well-respected by his men.

The seat of the Cymran empire is in Almwoch – a relatively small, incredibly wealthy city in the center of the country. There are three other major cities in the empire, each a seat of power for part of the empire and for one of Cynegels’ grandsons. Capel Kerig is the political seat in Nardi, and is the largest trade center on the western half of Hindrun. It has a massive merchant district, and ships enter and leave its port for places all over the world. Nearly anything can be purchased in the metropolis, so long as one has the gold. There is a light tariff on foreign goods, but it’s significantly lower there than anywhere else in the empire. Tregaron is the political seat of central Cymru, and houses a massive military base and shipyard. The vast majority of the army and navy are trained there, and the city is heavily fortified from attack. It also serves as a way of protecting Almwoch from attack by sea, as it lies directly downriver on Almwoch’s only outlet to the ocean. Fylke is the political seat of the Kerrenland, and is often looked down on as being poor and dirty despite being one of the most important trade centers in Cymru. It’s the largest port city in the Kerrenland, and many ships from Ibelin or other major Laceusian ports stop in Fylke to offload their cargo in exchange for gold mined from the southern Navarre mountains.

Spoiler: Northern Cymran Geography, Climate, and Civilization
    Show

Northern Cymru is covered by thick forests, with a fairly even mix of deciduous and fir trees. The trees in and near the mountains and the far northern reaches of Nardi are mostly evergreens, while the ones to the south are mostly deciduous, with a few rare subtropical trees along the southern part of the coast. The land is mostly flat with a few scattered hills, until you get close to the mountains. Nardi has a moderately-cold temperate climate – akin to say, the northern east coast of the US, or southeastern Canada - somewhat warm in the summer, and fairly cold in the winter. It sometimes receives large amounts of rain or tropical storms, but that sort of weather is extremely unusual. Most of the weather in Northern Cymru is clear and dry.

The overall level of "civilization" in Northern Cymru, especially with respect to colonization and the wild, is somewhat low. There are large tracts of uninhabited land, with most settlements being either along the coast, the rivers, or by the mountains. That said, during the process of conquering the land, the Cymran army burnt towns, farms, and forests to the ground, and killed the local warlords. There are many poor areas where the locals have had a hard time recovering from the process of their land being annexed into the empire, and abandoned towns, stand-alone man-made structures, or (more rarely) castles aren't too uncommon.

    Spoiler: Other notes:
    Show
The plot will likely not be particularly concerned with international politics.

It would be awesome if you could tell me, either in addition to or within your backstory, what your characters goals and motivations are, and what sort of things he/she cares about.

You'll be starting in the port city of Capel Kerig - people come there from everywhere on the continent, so don't worry too much about the distance away from Cymru if coming from one of the other empires struck you as fitting for your character. Your character should be able to speak Cymran, though, and Nordic is probably a good second language to know if you're going to learn multiple human tongues.

The way I'm handling languages is that there is no "common" tongue - your starting language is the language of your homeland. Races that would normally start knowing a racial language may instead take another of the human tongues. (so, for example, and elf might start with Cymran and Nordic, instead of Common and Elven).

I'm not really a big fan of traps, so don't expect there to be a lot of them. I might throw one or two in every once in a while, but it won't be a common thing.

You'll spend a fair amount of time in uncivilized areas... likely between 1/3 and 2/3 of the campaign, depending on how you define "uncivilized" and which direction you guys head in. Adverse natural conditions will likely not be a frequent obstacle, although they'll still come up occasionally.

Dragons' alignment and temperament are independent of the colour of their scales, and their breath weapons and immunities are not necessarily tied to dragons' colour either (although they often are). That's something best researched about each individual dragon.

    Spoiler: Houserules and Ban List:
    Show
    Houserules:
    • When RAW contradicts common sense, use common sense, and if we somehow run out of that, I’ll make a ruling.
    • Raise Dead/Ressurection do not cause level loss. Dying hurts the party enough, and I don’t want to deal with the level disparity that causes.
    • Warblades may receive their second stance at either level 4 or level 5, whichever you prefer for your build.
    • Changeling qualifies for warshaper and may use its class abilities as long as it isn’t in its natural form (which will likely be most of the time).
    • Metamagic reducers can never reduce the effective level of the spell below its normal level.
    • You may have a combined total of up to +1 LA from all sources. (races, templates, etc.). This LA counts against your ECL.
    • Divine spellcasters may prepare spells at any time of day. They are required to rest 8 hours prior to doing so, however.
    • Sorcerers get Eschew Materials as a bonus feat at level 1.
    • Note: I may decide to buff a class that you’re considering playing, if it seems appropriate.
    • The use of persuasion-based social skills (notably diplomacy, but occasionally intimidate and bluff) will depend much more on your roleplaying than on your die roll. I may give a circumstance bonus for being particularly convincing (diplomatically, manipulatively, or otherwise).
    • No multiclassing exp penalties. (which wouldn't really matter anyway, given how I'm handling exp, but it bears mentioning).
    • Mindless undead have an alignment of True Neutral, and intelligent undead are not automatically evil (although evil will be their usual alignment).
    • On warforged, vigor spells grant the full fast healing value, but have their duration halved (rounding down).

Ban list: (to eventually be sorted somehow)
    • Iron Heart Surge
    • Infinite loops or combos that create arbitrarily high numbers.
    • All versions of Polymorph, PAO, Shapechange, and similar effects.
    • All versions of Celerity
    • Divine Metamagic
    • Uncanny Forethought
    • Shock Trooper
    • Leadership
    • Lolth-Touched
    • Ur-Priest
    • Glibness

So, I think that's about it. Feel free to ask any questions you like. I'll try to be pretty consistent in updating this post with any more setting notes that I write up (of my own volition, or as responses to questions). All apologies if I take a really long time to respond to you.

    --

I'm now opening the thread up for persons outside of the game to comment, so long as you don't drag us too far off track in the OOC.

Woohoo! I haven't worked on the stats and stuff yet, but I can tell you all the basics of my character.

I am Alphonse the Jade Dragon, a human warblade specializing in using his mighty glaive and deft jumping abilities. He's a mercenary. That's all I have to tell you guys at the moment

The people Amidus sent the initial background information PM to include you, Wombat of Doom, yours truely, and Teddy. So presumably those people are likely.

You, Zodi, Teddy, Wombat, and myself; that's everyone that sent me a PM expressing interest. There weren't enough for me to want to cut anyone out to have the party size I like. (which is nice, because I'd rather not disappoint anyone).

Or what Zodi said, since I seem to have been beaten to this by quite a bit.

Well, if that's how we roll, I guess I've been thinking of doing something close to nature, probably a ranger or a druid. I'm leaning toward druid, because I really like magic users, but a sniper ranger wouldn't be too bad either...

I'm not really a big fan of traps, so don't expect there to be a lot of them. I might throw one or two in every once in a while, but it won't be a common thing. Just something you might want to keep in mind if you're going to play a rogue.

    --
Also, I've been thinking a bit (dangerous practice, that), and I have an idea. If there are areas of study that you want your character to know about that aren't covered by any of the standard knowledge skills, I'd be willing to allow other knowledge skills to cover other areas of study. (not that I can think of any examples off the top of my head, but I'm letting you guys know that you can be well-versed in something that isn't well-defined in the RAW skill list).

Same goes for Craft, Profession, and Perform skills, although I think those have that written into their skill descriptions already.

Setting notes updated with some information on local geography, climate, and the general level of civilization. A few things have been added to the houserules (that probably won't affect your character creation), and to the "Other notes" box, (which might).

As always, questions are encouraged; I'll reply whenever I have time.

Do you have a backstory yet? I might be able to gleam an idea based on that. First, what's your (character's) age?

Aaand finished my character sheet! I'll be writing the background information stuff later, but that's the easy part for me, so it looks like I (the person with the least knowledge of this system) have finished first

    Alphonse, the Jade Dragon!

It's also got an image of the character

I don't know all the details about how the Pointy Buy System works, but here is a calculator to do all the heavy brain lifting for you.

No stat can be under 8, and you can only get up to 32 total points (as shown in that bottom part that tallies your total).

What sort of wizardry are you planning on doing? Did he go to a wizard's college, did he have an apprenticeship, did he learn it by himself? Where's he from?

This should help, as well as the calculator Zodi linked.

I'm not sure. I was thinking of being a cleric, I don't play those often. But I wanted some sort of twist involved in it as well.

If this used the base gods I'd suggest being a Cleric of Tiamat, because greed technically isn't EVIL, persay. Most heroes have motivation little more then "get rich" which would be what Tiamat is all about. Doing good while getting rich should still count for her, in my eyes.

But yes, without a full grasp of the inner workings of the gods of this land work, I can't give any advice on how to make a "Twisty" cleric

    --
Alright, there's not really been any activity here (understandable - y'all have your own stuff going on, and I'm not ready to start the game for another three weeks or so), but I'd just like to remind y'all that this is here and stuff. I'd like to have your characters (sheets+backstory) a few days before Christmas, so I have time to look over everything and balance things for the party as I plan. After Christmas, I'm going to be pretty busy until about the 5th of January, so I'm looking at a tentative start date of Jan 6-7, assuming everything's together by then.

Does all of that sound good to you guys? Let me know if there's anything you need from me, and feel free to ask any questions you like about the setting or the game.

Sounds doable. My sheet only really needs feats and equipment (I'm terrible at picking feats, it takes me days to go through all resources and judge their use compared to eachother) plus some additional fluff on top for completion, and I have a rough concept draft for my backstory in the back of my head, so that should work.
