Re: (PF) maggie's Rise of the Runelords: Skinsaw Murders IC
Setsuna
HP 28/28
AC 23
Seeing no more enemies still standing up here, but hearing the others fighting down below, the tiefling wastes no time with words and instead rushes down as quickly as she can. Barely able to make out the duo matching the one that had been fought upstairs, she does her best to duck past them and get into flanking positions in the hallway.
Spoiler
Can't actually attack them this turn due to Red standing in the spot I need to be at, so double move with the 2nd movement being through their square to get into flanking with Red.

Brin
30/30
18 AC
Brin's relief from the quick fall of the second opponent is immediately tempered by the prospect of groping around in the smoke downstairs to find something to clobber with her morningstar. Maybe, if she was lucky, she'd hit. If she was really lucky, she'd hit someone who wasn't her friend.
Instead of charging ahead, she waits for Sirus to act and slaps him on the back as he passes, beseeching Pharasma to pluck the strings of fate on the man's behalf--a terribly extravagant turn of phrase for a crude bit of mystic chicanery, the divine equivalent of tossing a loaded dice. Not that there's anything wrong with that, so long as I'm not caught.
"I'll be right behind you." She says, and patiently waits for him to take the lead before following.
Spoiler
I assume that Sirus is heading downstairs, but it doesn't really matter. Either way, Brin is using her Bit of Luck ability to give him a free reroll on a D20 (standard action). If he does go downstairs, she'll follow him (move action)Last edited by Bhaakon; 2015-05-08 at 12:51 AM.

Re: (PF) maggie's Rise of the Runelords: Skinsaw Murders IC
Sirus
HP 36 (-12 from Con damage), 4 Con dmg AC 25, Symbol
His enemies fallen, Sirus can take a moment to take care of his wounds. He finds the antitoxin in his belt and quaffs it , spilling a bit in the wounds where the poison entered. Still wracked with pain, he activates the magic of his vest and takes some too long strides, almost gliding down the stairs as he moves.
At the end of the stair,he finds himself right beside Red. And an ugly ugly gnoll. His hands change from clawlike to a complex arrangement of stubbing fingers as Sirus tries to hit the gnoll at nerve points.
SpoilerDrinking the antitoxin, check.
Going down the stairs with MV 50 nets Sirus next to Red if I see correctly. And the standard attack for Stunning Fist.
(1d20+8)[26] since there is no flanking now. If hit, then dmg (1d8+5)[9] and DC19 or stunned for one round.Last edited by ProudGrognard; 2015-05-08 at 01:36 AM.

HP 21+15/35
Hearing more than seeing his allies come forth and join in the fray, Taladron decides to expend a less precious resource than his spells to aid in ending the current conflict. A snap of the fingers is all it takes to summon forth green acid and send it hurtling toward the gnoll.

Taladron
SpoilerReflex saves:

(1d20+10)[15] - failed
The blinding haze of the smokestick is no obstacle for Taladron's spell - while a blade or fist might miss, the great cloud of fire that coalesces out of the spark does not. With a thought, the mage is able to direct the tongues of flames to whoosh past Red in a straight blast aimed at the gnoll and its companion. Even from where Taladron crouches, the heat is immense, the startled yelps of the gnoll cutting through the fog.

Its now charred cloak still dancing with the odd spark, holes burnt in the fabric revealing raw red flesh underneath, the hooded Stalker decides to abandon all pretense at sword dexterity. Tossing the longsword it had been using aside, the Stalker hurls itself bodily at what it thinks is Red's direction, only to slam uselessly against the wall of the house.

Brin uses Bit of Luck. Sirus still has a reroll saved up! Want to use it for the Fort save? He needs two Fort DC 20 saves to stop losing CON, or has to sit out another 3 rounds of CON damage. (It's 6 rounds.)
Things begin to move along quicker with the return of those who had gone upstairs. Setsuna, moving at high speed and with distinctly unprincess-like haste down the stairs, rushes down the stairs in a whirl and takes a twisting leap into the air to avoid the gnoll that suddenly looms up before her, landing cat-like by Red's side. (Not that anyone else sees though - the smoke is much too thick for that.)
This sudden movement, of course, startles the gnoll. Too slow to pierce the tiefling as she soars over its head, being chained by the effects of Taladron's previous spell, the gnoll contents itself with a grating bark as it viciously stabs down at her with both knives, seeking to turn the alabaster skin red. While Setsuna is alert enough to block the first blow, deflecting it off the katana's spacer, the second blow finds her arm exposed and tears a nasty rip down to the bone.
Meanwhile, Sirus takes the opportunity to pull the vial of herbal antitoxin from his belt, quaffing the bitter mixture in a single swallow and dripping a little into the long scratch on his shin. Still, even as he staggers downstairs, is patted by Brin on the back, and sets about punching and jabbing the gnoll, he feels his vision swim and his stomach churn. If the antitoxin is still effective, it doesn't seem to be helping very much right now...
S1 is now stunned.Sirus takes 3 more CON damage.

Distracted by Setsuna's sudden landing amongst them, Red tries to avenge the gnoll's blow by lashing out at its belly, only to have her kukris once more grind in a harsh whisper against the metal plates sewn into the leather there. Setsuna
HP 22/28(/40)
AC 23
As this gnoll's blades manage to find purchase, staining her white skin red with fresh blood, Setsuna barely manages to keep it together and not collapse to the floor to cry in agony. Between the magical trap and the stinging wound, the pain is almost too much for the young tiefling to bear, No...I have to fight, everyone's counting on me...
Refusing to give up, and with the encouragment from Maethilur from moments before, she powers through, striking back at the gnoll, but focusing all her effort on a single attack rather than try to use magic to amplify the blow for once.

Brin
30/30
18 AC
Brin winces as she hears Sirus raining down blows on the blurry form of...something a few paces ahead. It sounded like an angry butcher whaling on a side of beef with a maul, all wet thuds and snapping ribs. The noise was a lot less pleasant when she couldn't actually see that the target was deserving.
The smoke wasn't helping things. Far from the pleasant, warm aroma of pipe tobacco, this acrid murk brought water to her eyes and rendered her bow useless. Finally she gives up and hangs back, arrow still fitted to bow, and waits for the smoke to clear enough to see what's going on.

Re: (PF) maggie's Rise of the Runelords: Skinsaw Murders IC
GM post
Setsuna and S1 and Sirus and Taladron - fudging combat order a bit here so this flows better...
Taladron casts Magic Missile for 8 damage.
SpoilerSirus uses his BoL from Brin for a successful CON save with (1d20+8)[25]. He needs another successful one to stop the poison. Either way, he doesn't take the 3 CON damage from the previous round and still needs another roll. Hence and therefore...
CON save (GM-rolled) for Sirus: (1d20+8)[20] - HE MAKES IT!
Hit or Miss? 1 for miss
(1d5)[5]
(1d5)[1] - misses, but gnoll still dies
Setsuna aims her katana at the gnoll's throat and would have struck true if not for a sudden wave of pain that swamps her body, causing her grip to falter at the last instant, her blade doing little more than thwack uselessly against the side of the gnoll.
Fortunately for Setsuna and most unfortunately for the gnoll, Sirus's previous blows had left it feeling quite addled, such that it can do little more than blink stupidly and jerk as Setsuna's jab misses. As such, the beast is helpless under Sirus's renewed onslaught as he mows it down in a hail of punches, his knuckles thudding against its meaty body in a series of dull thuds. All it takes is a coruscating globe of arcane energy flung from Taladron's hand to strike it in the heart - freezing what is left of the gnoll's ugly face in a dazed snarl, black lips flapping as it goes limp and falls.
Slayer 1 is now dead.

The hairy thing had fallen - that must have been Sirus, thank the gods. But they weren't quite safe yet. There was still this other thing here to be dealt with.
She longs to glance at Setsuna and to call to Sirus - to smile and say thanks, but this isn't the time. Giving an inarticulate shout as the gnoll crumples bonelessly to the ground, its skull quite smashed in by Sirus and a smoking crater of charred flesh on its chest, Red surges forward to face the hooded Stalker, striking at its neck and belly even as she bars its escape path with her tiny body.

Making a sound like bubbles being forced into treacle, it makes a feeble attempt to retaliate, only to impale an arm on Setsuna's waiting blade with a screech of dismay.
Realising that it has no way out, the Stalker hisses, shaking free of Setsuna's blade and raising its malformed paws defensively, a thin unpleasant voice emanating from somewhere within the many folds of skin. "Hold. Hold. I speak. I tell all."

Brin does her best to face in the direction of the mewling stalker and chokes back a cough as she waits for the smoke to clear. When it finally does she walks up behind Sirus and smiles a little too gleefully, happy that she'd asked Pharasma for exactly the right spell for once (one would think that Clerics the Goddess of fate and Prophesy would be better at predicting that sort of thing).

Re: (PF) maggie's Rise of the Runelords: Skinsaw Murders IC
GM post
The Stalker curses unintelligibly in its own tongue and continues to sway from side to side on its heels. "Sckrt! Live in sewer, hunt in city. In Underbridge. Justice elf find us on hunt. Say Mistress send him. Mistress say, we obey..."
Its reedy voice trails off, the Stalker's swaying suddenly slowing as if struck by a new thought. Flexing the digits of its paws one by one against its squishy flesh, the Stalker's voices comes slowly, each word carefully chosen. "If we tell of Mistress and Justice... you kill them, yes? Leave us... alone? Let us go?"
Sense Motive DC 15
SpoilerThis seemingly helpful offer is unlikely to be as clear cut as it appears. The Stalker obviously has its own motives for asking this question; when it says "us", it probably means "me". It clearly bears little loyalty to this "Mistress", at any rate.
Knowledge (local) DC 14 - no roll needed if you're a previous resident of Magnimar
SpoilerThe Underbridge is widely known as the seediest, dirtiest, and most disreputable of Magnimar's eighteen communities. Located in what is known as the Shadow area directly under the eternal shade of the Irespan remains, Underbridge is a rat-infested neighbourhood filled with gambling dens, rancid brothels, and decrepit tenements in which the worst vices of the city thrive. The area has gone relatively untouched by the authorities for decades, who have adopted an "out of sight, out of mind" attitude towards the place, thus allowing illegal trades like smuggling and other gang activities to flourish in the otherwise orderly city.
Underbridge, unlike the other districts, has no local militia to guard its streets. Even the Watch is loathe to venture into this seething underworld. Nobody would question a missing body here and there. Is it really any wonder that wretches like the Stalkers are able to do their overland hunting in such a place?

Setsuna
Maybe it's the pain, maybe it's her trusting nature getting the better of her, or maybe it was just because of the way her life had turned out these last few weeks, but whatever the case, Setsuna couldn't help but take the faceless creature's words at face-value. No longer seeing it as a threat, she lowers her sword and bites her lip, wanting to step in and say something but at the same time knowing that this thing was their only real lead at the moment and not wanting to throw that away. So, instead, she takes on a somewhat more relaxed stance...at least until the pain causes her to wince and use the wall to support herself as she lets Sirus handle the talking.

Re: (PF) maggie's Rise of the Runelords: Skinsaw Murders IC
GM post
If Sirus has any intentions of turning treacherous with the Stalker, it certainly doesn't seem to notice. Making a low growling sound from somewhere in its wrinkled body, the Stalker bobs its head and hunkers down, its paws still clamped to the side of its head. It speaks in a deliberate, reedy voice, still resentful at its predicament.
"Mistress, she come first. One night, First go hunt, come back with man female. Alive. She do great magics. First say Mistress make pack strong, if pack hunt for Mistress." The Stalker thumps a paw against the wooden paneling of the mansion and burbles angrily. "Three. Three suns and three suns and three suns. Always three suns go, Mistress come, ask First take pack hunt. Hunt dwarf. Hunt human. Hunt gnome. But not to eat! No. Is take knife and make marking in skin. Like so, see?"
The Stalker gestures towards it sunken chest, tracing a gnarled digit in a circular motion. "Kill, kill. Hunt for Mistress. But Mistress lie. Pack not strong. Pack become Justice elf perab morhu. Prey fight back, we die. Pack work with humans, we die. Justice give not gold. Man-flesh is little. First remember not - ugothol burkum hishi. Midnight, go to man-mill on city's little land. Is where pack bring prey to Justice. Sometimes, Mistress there. You kill Mistress, you kill Justice, pack be free. We leave to swamp gruthak." Making another gurgling noise like water swishing in a pipe, the Stalker hisses with a distinct tone of relish. "Then we leave. Pack go. No come back."
Knowledge (local) DC 14 - no roll needed if you're a previous resident of Magnimar
SpoilerThe Stalker probably is referring to Kyver's Islet when it says "little land". That would be the small island between Ordellia and Keystone that you all passed through late last night. It's the only place in Magnimar where the heavier industries have their workshops... and mills.

Looking down his nose at the disgusting creature, Taladron did not deign to speak to it. Now that it might have revealed a bit of useful information however, he feels cornered into addressing the wretched thing. "I suppose today would be 'three suns' since the last hunt you preformed for this mistress? So tonight they will be on Kyver's Islet?"
After obtaining a confirmation from the vile maggot, Taladron turns to the others and says, "Well we might now know where this Mistress Xanesha can be found and possibly Ironbriar as well, but I don't see how killing them will clear our names... not unless we find damning evidence on their bodies."

Still grimacing in pain, the tiefling does her best to keep her wits about her as she turns to Sirus, speaking in a hushed tone due more to the agony than secrecy. "I agree we should search this place...but...they might not be guarding anything," she says, her usually keen intellect for once not clouded by her rash nature. "This would be the obvious first stop for us. If they are after us then it would be the best place to lay a trap. Just because they are here does not mean that there is necessarily anything important here."
Turning to face the Stalker, "This pack of yours...how many of you are there?"Lilith Avatar by AsteriskAmp

Red
The young woman looks up from nursing the stinging welt on her face at the mention of clearing names. "We... have that paper. The official one... from the Justice. It will... help? There is... surely... other... evidence. We just have... to find it."
Looking down at the smear of blood on her finger, Red's thoughts momentarily fly to Rico, her shoulders slumping ever so slightly as she look down at her feet. Rico would know about evidence and clearing names and stuff like that. Rico should be here. Was she going to be away in Sandpoint for long?

Taladron's Linguistics check
SpoilerFaceless Stalkers, as you know, speak a variant of Aquan that their kind has adapted - some might even say corrupted - for their use. As such, you are unable to pick out all of its gibberish, though you do recognise a few words. Ugothol burkum hishi. Ugothol is the name that the Stalkers use for their own race. Burkum hishi isn't a phrase that has a direct translation, though the roughest approximation you can think of is the Common adage 'we rise up'.
If the Stalker's loyalties aren't with the Justice or this Xanesha, they are surely with its pack. And as what the pack's motives could be... Dimly, you recall what the other Stalker than Brin had momentarily summoned from the dead. ...we rise from the dark.
"The little land! Said so. Yes, this sun-dark. Justice ask us stay here. Take shape of the foolish lordship, trick you so gnolls cut throat. But we know is useless. Gnolls want blood, want money. So throw smoking stick, strike first."
Now that it has spilled most of the proverbial beans, the Stalker is eager to tell all it knows. At Setsuna's question, however, it seems to hesitate, choosing its words very carefully. "Sckrt. Few left. We pack. We feel all death. Last sun-dark, lost five. You kill us, yes? Few left. If you raise fist, we die. Crush to dust."

Brin
Reaching deep into her magical pack, Brin produces a prodigious length of rope and shoves one end towards Sirus's hands so he could help her truss up the Stalker. "We should at least make sure this thing is well and truly bound before we continue the search. I suspect we'll be staying here at least until your curse runs its course, so we'll have plenty of time to figure out what to do with it."
"Red, be a dear and check the next two rooms for anything that looks fishy. Or trappy, if that's even a word. I'll be along in a moment to look for anything magic."
SpoilerHelp tie up the Stalkers, then cast Detect Magic (detect Evil should still be active) and check the NW room on the second floor:

Setsuna
Unable to think about how best to handle the aberration when all she really wants to do is curl up into a ball and hold herself until the pain goes away, Setsuna sheathes Maethilur and turns to Red as Brin makes her request, "I will go with you...I can not think clearly enough to know what to do with that," she motions toward the stalker. "And I think I already proved we should not explore this place alone."

Red and Setsuna
Both of the rooms that Brin directs you to search turn out to be rather similar – bedrooms, stripped of everything but the bulky bedframes and the desks, which were likely too heavy to carry away.
A quick rummage through the drawers proves disappointing. All you can find is dust, a torn scrap of towel, more dust, and yet another handful of acorns in the bottom drawer on the left bedroom. Either Aldern must have kept a rogue squirrel pet in the house, or perhaps, like how some rich Taldans did, someone had once drenched these nuts with perfume to keep the drawers smelling fresh.

Everyone else
Upon perceiving that its likely fate is to be bound and unceremoniously left to its own devices (perhaps in some dark and musty closet), the Stalker grows visibly dismayed, cowering low as Sirus approaches it with the rope. Nevertheless, it makes no protest as he winds the prickly cord about its limbs, though it seems to struggle internally for a moment before it bursts out, straining against the rope.
“You search. For Lordship’s money. No more, there is. Justice elf ask pack be human. Take all away. Give him.” The words come hurriedly, in one long torrent, as if it senses its favour with your group is rapidly waning. “Three suns. We wait with gnolls. We found. Hidden thing of Lordship. Justice not find. We show you. Then let us go…?”
The Stalker’s last words trail off into a hopeless sigh, if such creatures are even capable of the emotion.
Sense Motive DC 14
SpoilerThe Stalker seems to have played its last card. It has nothing left to lose now and is thus likely to be telling the truth about the “hidden thing”.

Taladron
In pain and with no patience to be searching a house from top to bottom in his state, Taladron listen's to the stalker's plea. "If you show us where the thing the Justice missed is I will untie you myself. Betray us by attacking or by telling the mistress or the Justice we are coming for the and I will see to the eradication of your entire pack starting with you. Understood?"
Assuming the creature could make reasonable assurances to Taladron of his cooperation, Taladron follows his directions to the hidden thing, leaving the Pharasmans to guard the prisoner.

Brin
It's difficult to look tough when choking back a giggle, but that's precisely what Brin does as Taladron threatens the cowering stalker. She nods in agreement with his ultimatum. He's got the right idea. That thing might be desperate, but it well knows that lying means a quick cut across the throat. Actually, telling the truth probably means a quick cut across the throat. Lying might mean a slow one.
She waits for the thing to spit out its directions, then watches over it sternly as Taladron conducts the search.

Sirus
Sirus continues to walk like a far older man, more slowly and with greater control. Now and then, an involuntary twitch and a muscle tremor betrays the agony that surges through his body. That, and tiny beads of sweat.
He starts to tie the Stalker and then stops when it gives its last offer.
"I will. Still tie you. But lead us. To. The hidden. Cache. And. You will. Be. The only one. Spared.
Betray us. And die. As the mage. Said.
Choose."

Red
Red pokes curiously at the acorns, watching them wobble and spin, but looks up when she catches the note of pain in Setsuna's voice.
"I think... we are finished. Here." Taking the tiefling's arm and putting it over her shoulder, she helps the tiefling hobble out of the room. Hopefully, they would have thought of something else in the meanwhile.

GM post
The Stalker shrinks away at the mention of going upstairs, but at Sirus's behest, it reluctantly clambers to its feet and shuffles ahead of Sirus and Taladron, leading the way to the third floor.
The ripped up bodies of the first gnoll and the other Stalker remain where you've left them, sprawled and broken. At the sight (how do Stalkers even see?) of the gnoll's face, stiffened in a grotesque black-lipped snarl, the Stalker shudders, visibly cowed. Giving a choked-off gurgle, it deliberately steps around the corpse, pressing as close at it can to the walls as it practically tiptoes its way over to the far south side of the room.
This room, like the others, has long since been stripped bare of anything of obvious value. What remains are two small armchairs and a long threadbare sofa without covers, arranged before a sooty fireplace with the grates pried open. Judging from the rank odour of wet fur and the odd meaty bone fragments strewn around the sofa, the gnolls have probably been making use of this room as their camping site while waiting for you. Stumbling over to the fireplace, the Stalker gestures helplessly at the mantel. "You see. Hidden thing. Need key."
At first, those of you who have followed the Stalker see nothing except a rather dirty mantel, flecked with charred wood black and with most of its ornate carvings defaced. Only when you follow the direction that the Stalker's paw waves in do you see it - on the left side of the mantel, in the throat of the lion head carved there, hidden among the folds of its mane, is a tiny carvern opening - a keyhole.
Perception DC 14
SpoilerThat lion head looks a lot like the lion head of the key that you all found in the cave where Aldern was hiding. Perhaps it is a match?
Still no map because GM is posting on the road while on vacation and everyone has seen fit to borrow her laptop, leaving her with little time to tinker with the map in photoshop. Sorry!
