    Default The Void Dragon

Just because I thought I might take a spin at designing a new variety of planar dragons, I introduce the first of my new babies! The Void dragon is a being native to the plane in between all planes, the Void, and embodies the cold, vast emptiness of the plane. Their minds and their purposes are beyond mortal ken, and they are both before and after good and evil, law and chaos.

So yeah, might as well make some tables and such, hopefully get some feedback :P

Breath attack (su): The Void dragon's breath attack deals 2d4 disruption damage per age category, allowing a reflex save for half. Creatures immune to force damage are immune to the damage from this breath. Additionally, any creature damaged by this spell has their highest level buffing spell (if applicable) immediately dispelled. This version of the breath attack fires in a line from the dragon's head.

Alternately, the Void Dragon may fire a cone of disruption energy that strikes all creatures in its range. The creatures caught in this cone must make a fortitude save to prevent any spell casting, manifesting, supernatural abilities, SLA's or PLA's from being used for 1 round.

Caster Level: A Void Dragon of the Young age category and older gains spells/ day and a caster level much like a sorcerer of the listed level. In a setting that allows Psionics, the Void Dragon may alternatively gain manifester levels, power points and powers as a Psion specialized in Psychoportation, though with charisma as its primary casting stat instead of intelligence.

Force immunity (ex): Having a body that absorbs pure energy helps when people are spamming magic missiles at you, and Void Dragons have this kind of body. the kinetic energies of hostile force attacks disperse harmlessly along these creature's blackened flanks, sending harmless ripples along them and nothing more.

Breathless (ex): Though the void dragon has a breath attack and is, in fact, a living being, it does not need to breath no matter what environment it finds itself in.

Void Body (ex): The Void Dragon, embodying the emptiness and nothingness of the Void, has an unusually high resilience to the vast majority of magics. Even from birth, a Void Dragon has Spell Resistance equal to its HD+5, and it grows at an increased rate. On top of the natural growth, the Void Dragon gains an extra +1 SR per age category beyond wyrmling.

As well, Void Dragons also have a strange body. It grows with their experience and power instead of their age, making it seem to normal dragons like they rocket through time. The Void Dragon counts class levels as RHD when calculating age category and size, and may take Dragon hit dice as class levels. They do not gain the advantages of SR progression, frightful presence progression or caster level progression from age category unless they take dragon HD when they level up. When determining what dragon abilities the Void Dragon has access to, add their RHD and their class levels-5 (minimum 1), this number is their equivalent dragon level (So a Void Dragon with 12 RHD and 7 levels of Wizard counts as a 14 RHD Dragon as far as their draconic abilities and breath weapon are concerned, but as a dragon with 21 RHD for size category and racial ability score modifiers).

Detect magic (ex): At all times, the Void Dragon knows if an item is magical in nature and if magic is in use (as per the spell detect magic). Additionally, the dragon may identify a creature's caster level (if any), their source of magic (divine, arcane, psionic) and knows their general location even through walls or other objects as long as they are within 200ft per age category.

Void Claws (ex): Upon dealing damage to creatures with their claws, the Void Dragon discharges pulses of disruption energy into their bodies. Starting at the young age category, the Void Dragon deals an extra 1d6 disruption damage for every three age categories they possess. Creatures immune to force damage are immune to this extra damage.

Ignore protection (su): Starting at the Juvenile category, the Void Dragon may, once per day, spend a swift action to ignore all armor class a creature has granted to them from spells, armor, shields and natural armor for one round every five age categories the Void Dragon possesses. Dodge, luck, deflection, holy, profane, dexterity and untyped bonuses must still be overcome as normal.

Call of the Void (su): A Void Dragon that has grown to the age of Great Wyrm may call allies within the Void to serve them. Regardless of the alignment of the creatures called, they will be loyal beyond any attempts to sway either through magical or mundane means, and they will follow all orders from the Void Dragon absolutely. The controlling Void Dragon may send telepathic messages and commands to any creature they control as a free action. The Void dragon may spend 10 minutes once per day to summon up to their HD in Void creatures*. No creature summoned in this way may have above 1/4 of the HD control limit of the Void Dragon.

Creatures summoned in this way remain until dismissed, replaced or slain. The Void Dragon may not control more than twice its HD in void creatures at any one time from this ability. If the HD control limit of this ability has been reached, then further castings may be used to replace creatures currently controlled. Creatures replaced in this way are instantly sent back to the Void with no saving throw.

*Void creatures are any natural denizen of the Void. This includes official creatures like the Void Hound and Void Walker, and soon enough some homebrew Void creatures that me and a friend should be making. This list also includes all creatures with the ability Void Body and the Voidblessed template (another homebrew thing not yet created).

Spell like abilities: At the proper age categories, the Void Dragon gains the following spells as spell like abilities. Dispell magic 3/day, Ghost touch 3/day, Anti-magic field 1/day, Ghost form 1/day. All save DC's are Charisma based*.

    __________________________________________________ ______________________________________

Appearance: The scales of a Void dragon appear to be disks of pure, undisturbed blackness, welded together at the edges by star light. As they grow older, or at least stronger, the Void Dragon's scales smooth ever farther together, seeming to melt into the same fluid inky blackness, and the stars become more and more defined. The most ancient of Void Dragons look like tapestries flying far, far above the reach of the clouds, a shifting section of the night sky that was ripped out and given dragon form. Their eyes burn as a miniature sun, red, blue, yellow, white, green, they are all colors of stars both known and yet to be discovered. In fact, some of the Void Dragons have eyes that burn black... however strange that may sound. As they grow older, their eyes become more angled, more defined, and they gain a cooler, colder clarity.

Personality: The Void Dragon are... peculiar creatures. While fearsome, intelligent and incredibly charismatic, they are also almost completely uncaring about the world and all that lay in it. They are imperious, aloof, and for the most part ignore all worldly possessions and all planes beyond the Void, and even on the Void they act like strangers, never choosing a location to settle or build up a hoard. In fact, the only thing they seem to care about is... magic. Magic to feast upon and to grow with. And in pursuit of this magic, which is oh so very rare in the emptiness of the Void, the Void Dragon will travel very, very great distances and kill any number of beings that get in their way. Not many know why they search for this magic and why they seek to grow so rapidly and so violently, but one thing is for certain, they want it, and their bodies have developed to break it down and absorb it. They especially like the taste of divine magic, enough so that they will actually go to suicidally monumental measures to try and claim it.

Because they do not care about worldly possessions of a mundane nature, and because they do not typically have a hoard, it is typical for adventurers to lose money while slaying these beasts. But sometimes, very rarely, a Void Dragon will gather to themselves a collection of incredibly magic items and artifacts, which the slowly drain the essence from. If one of these dragons is encountered, then they will have an incredible payout for all those who were involved in killing it, making such prospects a gamble.

Physiology: These dragons are not born from eggs, but rather are reformed upon their deaths within the Void as wyrmlings, with no memories of what they were and a gnawing, driving hunger to consume magic and grow. This magic is incorporated into their bodies, broken down to a much simpler form and dispersed within them to build up vital systems and promote rapid growth. As they grow older, this process becomes more refined and they become able to absorb magic from the very air itself, allowing them to continue to consume and grow at an alarming rate. Or at least, an alarming rate on the Prime Material. Magic in the Void is scarce enough that their growth is similar to that of normal, mortal dragons on the material, so it is those ones that leave their home plane that demonstrate this amazing biological adaptation.

Void Dragons on the material plane do not need to eat, the magic that is present even in space is enough to sustain them, and they require very little sleep, only about four hours every few days. Their heart rate is rather low, and even when they are threatened or dying it does not seem to increase. It is theorized that these dragons are basically immune to fear, though then again, most dragons wouldn't show it even if a blade was held to their heart.

Their metabolism is rather low for a dragon, oddly enough, and things that they have eaten have been reported recovered in near-perfect condition days after consumption. Similarly, there have been a few reports of a human or elf living for almost a day within a Void Dragon's gullet, while things like constructs and undead are destroyed nearly instantly. It is theorized that this is because the dragon's digestive systems have so evolved to be sustained on magic that they have trouble with physical objects and non-magical beings. Or it might be that while on the material Void Dragons simply do not need sustenance other than the magic around them, so their body temporarily shuts down in some respects, leaving more energy in reserve to continue their rapid growth.

Relationships: The Void Dragons have no allies, though there are many, many magical beings who view them as natural enemies, including most varieties of dragons and things such as beholders and mind flayers. They ignore the mundane races, for the most part, since despite their capacity to learn magic, humans, elves, etc, don't possess much more than a small natural spark to them. About what you would find in a tree, really. As such, mortal adventurers can often times walk right up to a Void Dragon and get in the first shots before it even recognizes that they exist.

Void dragons ignore each other for the most part, though sometimes they come into conflict with one another over a site of magic, or a Wyrm will hunt wyrmlings and other smaller Voids to consume the small magics they have gathered to themselves.

Combat: A Void Dragon will actively ignore a party that does not possess magical weapons or items, and if they try to force a fight then there is an equal chance of the dragon fighting or running away. If a creature is magical in nature or possesses magic items, however, then a Void Dragon will open up with their breath weapon and try to gain altitude (often using their damaging breath).
On the second round, if their enemies have magical protections or spells, the Void Dragon will attempt to remove them with the most powerful means at their disposal. Otherwise they will skip to round three.
On the third round the dragon will charge at the closest enemy caster, favoring any divine caster, and will typically attempt to either grapple if the opponent appears to be especially durable, or power attack them if they seem to be weaker. If there are no creatures with casting ability, then they will target the creature with the most magical items.
On the fourth round, the dragon will either use its breath weapon again (if recharged) or it will activate an anti-magic field if it is old enough to do so.
From the fifth round on, the Void Dragon will stay in melee, using grappling, full attacks and breath alternatively, whichever one seems to be the best option based on the enemies it is fighting. If all casting creatures have been slain, the dragon will attempt to take their bodies and items and fly away unless a mundane character has more powerful items then their defeated foe.

    Knowledge; Arcane
    {table=head]Roll DC | Knowledge known
15 | Void Dragons are creatures born on a different plane. They seem nearly immune to magic.
20 | Though they have the same shape as dragons, they grow at unnatural rates and consume magic. They seem to ignore all mundane creatures.
25 | Void Dragons are cold creatures that constantly go through cycles of birth, magic consumption and rebirth. They are dragons who fuel their rapid growth through the perfect refinement of magic, and they hunt all other magical beings to consume and grow.
30 | It is said that all Void Dragons are fragments of a shattered god, the first god, and that they consume magic as a forgotten fragment of memory of their original glory. These dragons subconsciously yearn to be whole once more, though such a thing is now impossible.

    Very interesting. . .

I'm really liking the idea behind this; living in between the planes sounds pretty neat. I can't wait to hear all about the coming void creatures and templates! I shall be keeping in touch! You should make a base or prestige class that calls upon the power of the void. You could really make something off of that.

Funny thing about that... I sort of already have the class in my head, but I'm waiting for this to get a bit more of a kick-start before fully forming it and posting. My next projects for the Void should be the Voidblessed template and the Creation and Oblivion dragons.

Heh, I was actually thinking about opening the whole concept up for people once I get rolling with creating them, say, after I finish the Oblivion Dragon and Creation Dragon. Then making a master post for the stuff, because I'm planning on creating quite a bit.

Not the LoC void dragon god that I made (though that's where I got their lore entry/ possible quest hook from ), but based off of it in appearance and stuff, I suppose.
