Default Ain't No Rest for the Wicked (IC Thread)

An ethereal moan echoes through the cavernous halls of Agathon's palace, though you can't be sure whether it's the cry of some undead creature or simply air blowing through the catacombs. Ahead of you is your escort, a huge mohrg with a rusted greatsword slung over his back.

"This way," he says, pointing down a passage to the left, "We're almost there."

At last you emerge in a large, well-furnished room with high ceilings. The mohrg gestures sharply for you to sit down in one of the many chairs throughout the room. At the opposite end of room from where you came in is an ornate wooden door, through which you can hear the vague sounds of a heated conversation, though you can't quite make out the words.

"Agathon will be with you shortly." the mohrg informs you, a twinge of irritation in his deep, echoing voice, "He's attending to other business. I'll notify you when you can go in."

Mors glares at the mohrg "Why did he call me here if he was busy?" He demands, his wickedly sharp teeth showing with every word. He ignores the chairs, instead standing near them with his hands folded in front of him. His monstrously large scythe is holstered on his back, the bottom poking out past his right knee and the top coming up over his left shoulder, the blade curving around up over his bald head. His plate armor shines, shamanistic symbols engraved on it as decoration.

Unlike the majority of those present, one of the invitees is neither obviously undead nor obviously armed. Instead, she appears as a regal queen wearing a blue silk gown, golden coif and silver scepter. She is unnaturally tall, but otherwise appears entirely human and fully alive. The faint rustle of chainmail belies this illusion whenever she walks, but (so far) none have commented.

Mortanni puts her feet up on a coffee table and glances over at Mors. "Yes, one would think that an immortal lich would have enough time to schedule his meetings further apart." After a moment's consideration, she adds "I am Mortanni, of course. No doubt you recognize me. Who might you be?"

Along with the others there is a little girl, dressed in black. She looks friendly, but a little pale. In her short arms she carries a black cat, which purs contently as she strokes it. She smiles at the others, not at all intimidated by their presence: "Hello! I'm Xanthose vel Enas, and this is Kedi, my cat. She's really cute you know? Anyways, we might have to wait for a few moments, but we should have plenty of time, right?"

She looks at the others with her large blue eyes, hoping to learn their names as well. "I don't know why I was called here. I was just playing a little game of tag, and suddenly someone told me that I should come here. I try to be a good girl, so I came immediately, and here we are now, waiting. Does anyone want to play a game?"

Mors laughs softly at the little girl, talking about childish things like tag. With a soft laugh he moves swiftly, his body blurring a bit as he grabs the girl by the waist and tosses her and her cat up in the air, nearly hitting the ceiling before catching her as she comes back down and setting her back on the floor indulgently.

The tree stood in the corner of the room, watching, remaining silent. His burning eyes went from each of these creatures to the next. The small one, still a child it seemed, or simply pretended for their benefit. Her new friend, the largest among them, even larger than he. Then, the human woman. She wasn't really any longer, of course, or she wouldn't be here. The fleshlings still had their vanity, Bagadavum supposed. Then the wrapped one-Bagadavum had heard their kind called mummies before. And of course, himself. A strange gathering, though the tree did realize out of all of them, he was likely the strangest. He had not seen any other trees in his time in the necropolis, after all.

And this is a good town, there isn't any sunlight for instance, it is unhealthy to be in the sun, and my health is another one of those things that I really like. In this city I can just play without stupid priests coming after me with their shiny holy stuff.", she answers, sounding perfectly happy. "And why did you come here? Are you here to play as well? And you other people? Like you, mister Tree, who are you?"

Bagadavum could not help but smile when the tiny creature turned to question him. "Bagadavum, small one. Or Baga, if my name is too long for you. My home was destroyed. First by elves, then by Pelor's lackeys. I would see both dead at my feet. But that is for another time. This city seemed as good a place as any to wait, and to return to when I am done with a hunt."

Kelarus watched without saying anything. He stood in his armor with the hood of his cloak up. These were the ones that Nerull spoke of? The ones who would help him bring about the Final Reaping?

Kelarus arched a brow and studied them. But he finally opened his mouth to speak. "You are the others who have come for this--gathering?" Yes. That was a good introduction--not too revealing about himself, but it grabbed their attention. LeSare did well and he knew it, but this was a small victory--however, it was an important one.

Mortanni smiles at the vampire child's antics. Mister Tree indeed. She eyes the cat speculatively as she answers Kelarus: "Certainly. I would not be here if I were not invited. I suppose the great and terrible Agathon has some droll task for us to perform. Do you suppose he'll have us rescuing a tree from a kitten?"

She turns around, looking at the others: "So, you are Baga, you are Mors, you are Mortanni and I am Xanthose, but you can also call me Xan if you like that better, sometimes long names get a little annoying. But who are you, are you mister Hood?", she asks, pointing at Kelarus.

As Mortanni finishes speaking, the heavy wooden door on the opposite side of the room bursts open, and a tall blonde human man strides out into the room. A silver morningstar hangs at his belt, and he is dressing in shining white armor, with a golden star of Pelor adorning his chest. The wet, unfamiliar, rhythmic sounds of his breathing fills the otherwise silent room.

"Speaking of the devil..." mutters the mohrg quietly.

Now bothering to hide his disgust from you, the cleric holds his head high and walks out of the room from the passage you took to enter. A high pitched voice calls out from Agathon's office.

    "Enter, please."

Agathon's room is almost unnaturally clean and organized, stacks of books and papers neatly piled on the bookshelves all around the walls. Agathon himself sits behind a desk near the back of the room, dressed in a dark blue robe, his head adorned by a silver crown with the symbol of Yasinoba on it, his withered face twisted into an expression of concern.

"Hello, my friends." he says, smiling now, "Welcome. Please, sit." Agathon gestures to the chairs in front of him.

"I'm sorry about Father Costillo. He can be... difficult. He came here, actually, to address the same matter I have brought you here to discuss." The lich takes a moment to compose himself, staring from face to face gravely. "The living have been being abducted from the surface cities closest to ours. By the dead. As if that wasn't incriminating enough, the attackers were adorned by the symbol of the city. Many members of the church wanted to launch a second crusade to wipe us out, but I thankfully talked them down. I bet you're wondering what you have to do with this. I want you to find out who is doing this, and stop them before the situation gets out of hand. This might seem bad, but I'm sure I can turn it into an opportunity to get the Church of Pelor on our side."

Bagadavum curled his arms together, glaring at the lich king. He could feel his rage starting to bubble over. But. No. Not towards Agathon. Agathon had been good to him. "My liege, I respect your judgment. You have been kind to me during my stay. But you also know my history. What those Pelorites have to answer for. So I assume you have a very, very good reason as to why I should not race after that priest, rip his head from his spineless shoulders, reanimate his corpse, and send it hobbling into his temple with a message written in his blood about how very sorry we are that their priests are disappearing, and that we will get back to them as soon as we know something, besides the possibility of money. And I should very much like to hear it."

Xanthose was just about to give Kelarus a stern talking-to, people should be nice after all, but she sees the Pelorite priest. When he walks past she actually recoils, showing her deep fear of the clergy. Are they coming here as well now? Maybe she should leave the city. But outside there are more priests. It's just not fair.

But the call comes, and she goes inside, taking care to not walk where the priest just was. She pouts: "But, but priests are not nice, they don't want to play, they always try to hurt me. Why should we let them come here, if I can't go to their cities without being attacked? It simply isn't fair!"

She then seems to calm down a little: "And what Baga says is a nice suggestion, it would certainly be fun. But you don't want us to hurt them I think. And now there are people saying that they are yours, and they make you look bad. That isn't nice of them. Do you want us to hurt them?"

"I'm rather inclined to agree with the shrub to" Mors says, laying a comforting hand across the child's shoulders. "Pelorites are jerks with no respect for anyone but themselves, and a deep hatred of the dead. I think they will attack as soon as they think they are strong enough, whether they are provoked or not."

Mortanni stares blankly at the lich, as if waiting for something. A punchline, an explanation, perhaps for their leader to begin barking like a dog. She murmurs to herself, "And they said his predecessor was mad..."

Agathon smiles wearily, his burning red eyes betraying his irritation. "I don't think you fully understand. The Pelorites and those they serve outnumber us greatly. Perhaps we could prevent them from destroying us all, if they attacked. Perhaps. But why provide them with a reason? It's enough of an uphill battle convincing them we mean them no harm when they have such damning evidence to the contrary." Agathon stares directly at Mortanni now. "Funny you should mention Beler. He had a similar attitude towards the living, and that was his downfall. We don't want another great crusade. I sympathize with and share your dislike of the church, and believe me if I had the means to destroy them or turn them in undead I would do it in a moment. But I don't. So will you take the job, or must I go to the trouble of finding someone else?"

Mortanni considers the request. On one hand, it is obviously a fool's errand - no amount of appeasement would get the Church of Pelor to agree that undead are a good thing. On the other hand, she was bored with lurking about her tomb and Agathon was giving her an excuse to hunt something down and kill it. "I'm in. I have my doubts as to whether this will improve matters, but I've never let trivial little details like that stop me before."

Kelarus approached slowly. Every step calculated and every movement followed by a glance towards each party around him. He knew they couldn't be trusted, but that was something that would have to be accepted.

"My liege," he spoke. "I will offer--my own thoughts regarding these Pelorians." His voice was raspy. It sounded like a man who had spent the vast majority of his life nursing his vice for tobacco at the sweet, sweet neck of a cob pipe.

"Pelorians are much like dogs," he explained as he stared off into space--somewhat lost in his own thoughts as he went on his own monologue. "If you shoot an arrow into one, the rest will overwhelm you. But if you give them meat, they'll love you."

"I am going to recommend a surgical operation to win the Pelorians to our side," he continued. "But you may not like it." The Ghoul muttered a phrase and then a shroud of wispy blackness cloaked him from view. As it dissipated, one could see he wore plate-mail as black as Nerull's still heart.

"I wish to propose that you arm one of us with a charm bracelet. One of the charms will bear the City's Crest. The other will bear some other symbol--that is not important," he mused. "We will sneak into their encampment, murder their high priest, and I will have one of my shadows issue the killing blow. The shadow and its spawn will likely kill quite a few before it is killed, but I'll leave behind the bracelet."

"While they are recovering, we will hold the actual culprits of the kidnappings in a cell. They will discover the bracelet and realize that there's more at hand than just our city here. We will give each of the culprits a brand with the symbol on the bracelet. Following that, we will offer to pay for the resurrection of their dead."

"My liege, that final aspect--paying for all the deceased to be resurrected--will win them over. It will show them that we are not heartless monsters. That we are still their kinsmen who have merely lost Pelor's good graces."
