How to find a D&D group?
Hello all! Long time reader/lurker and all of that.
Now I'm sure this question comes up all the time, but how does one find a group to play D&D with?
I live in Australia, so Googling has been of no help whatsoever.
Nor do I have any friends in real life interested in playing, but I'd love to play PnP D&D since I was a DM on a Neverwinter Nights roleplaying server for years and years, but unfortunately NWN is dead as can be.
So any ideas?

Re: How to find a D&D group?
a. Manufacture a group from amongst your local friends/co-workers/peers/ladies and gentlemen.
b. Consider a game playing over the internet on a VoIP (Skype, Teamspeak, Ventrilo) and via a virtual tabletop (MapTool, Roll20, etc). Tangled Web has all kinds of resources set up to help organize this sort of thing, and I've found it extra helpful in the past.
c. Post on a local university/college campus. Alternatively, if you're in High School (not likely, as NWN was years and years ago... good times), post on a bulletin board, or just spread the news via word of mouth. Get it out there that you want to play some D&D, and by god, you don't care if you have to DM, and teach a bunch of new players how to play the game.
d. If there is a local game/hobby/collectibles shop, and they have RPG stuff for sale (dice, books, minis, mats, modules, etc etc etc) ask them if you could post something in their store saying you're interested in playing and looking for a group. This is an exceptionally effective method, because people that are also looking for groups tend to congregate in these places. Many of these stores also have tables set up for just exactly this purpose. And they're always happy to have a group of ne'er-do-wells hanging around, buying all their stuff.
I find any combination of the above to be super effective. I hope it helps!
p.s. Happy Straya Day, from Canada. :P

Re: How to find a D&D group?
Pardon my ignorance, but what is PnP?
Based on context, it seems kind of like PbP. If that's the case, you've come to the right place. This site's got game.

Re: How to find a D&D group?
OH! If that's the case then you need to find some LFG sites.
Try the following:
Wizards.com
Roll20
RPG Game Find
DnD Meetup
Other than that, you can try the Playground, but we do mostly PbP here, and we don't sort things by country/county/city. It's just a big hodgepodge of interested gamers from around the world.PbP Junk and Stuff:

Re: How to find a D&D group?
Get Google+ (for hangout) and the Roll20 app.
I believe Roll20 has a forum dedicated to searching for a group.

Re: How to find a D&D group?
Even if you are in high school I'd encourage checking out your local college campus if there is one. The people at my campus are very welcoming of younger players. I'm assuming that other campuses would be similar.
I'd also recommend Roll20. It's great and its what my group uses, but its not pen and paper.

Well I've finished university, so poking around school isn't an option for me.

If Pathfinder would be OK for you, you can try to find a Pathfinder Society game around your area on Paizo's homepage: http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety/events. Even if it's not your thing, it'll get you into contact with our RPGers in your area.

Re: How to find a D&D group?
Not sure why Google shouldn't work for Australia. Googling "d&d <Australian_city_name>" works pretty well for me.
Examples:
"d&d melbourne"
"d&d brisbane""None of us likes to be hated, none of us likes to be shunned. A natural result of these conditions is, that we consciously or unconsciously pay more attention to tuning our opinions to our neighbor’s pitch and preserving his approval than we do to examining the opinions searchingly and seeing to it that they are right and sound." - Mark Twain
