Default [EMPIRE!] The Grand Ball of 336

    The Grand Ball of Lyradis
    -Spring, 336-

All Guests note - any alliances or trades or betrothals can be merged into your action of attending the ball, so long as you summarize all occurances in your action post.

    ---

As your guide leads your entourage along the expanse of the Crest, perched on the spine of the Mountains of Dis, you take in the beauty of the view, and formidable heights. It is breathtaking, to say the least.

Ahead of you rises the city of Delberelle, most of the buildings made out of brick and stone. Each roof is a variant of red, some orange in color, others a deep red, still others a dark wine. There are green and white flags flying from many roofs, and the towers along the city wall. The city is impressive, and it appears to be built on the only rise in the long flat plateau that is the Crest.

    ***

As you approach the main gate to the city of Delberelle, your guide rides out infront of you, baring your nation's colors, as well as the Nation of Lyradis. You notice that your nation's colors fly above Lyradis', a rare honor of a nation. An action of good will and respect. The gates open, and you are greeted by a host that esquorts you to your rooms. Your family, personal servants and guard are all situated to be in the area adjoining your rooms, and any accompanying patrons or guards will be stationed in the barracks that adjoins the royal keep.

    ***

You will be provided for and welcomed in kind by the Lord of Lyradis, Gareth Serendel, and dine with him daily until all nations scheduled to arrive do so. Tours are arranged to lead you through parts of the city, and horses are provided for small outings around the Crest if you desire. As soon as the last country arrives, the Royal keep goes into full swing in preparations in earnest, and soon the Ball begins.

All nations present arrive in the Grand Hall, which appears to have been newly refurbished, and has inlaid within its ceiling a map of the known world. It's ornate, beautiful, and full of detail. The oceans sparkle, the mountains seem to actually rise out of the ceiling. You notice that many of the nations aren't very thoroughly mapped, perhaps due to lack of information, or alliance. The details are indeed sparser the farther East the map goes. Perhaps you could rectify these details, if you should so choose.

The room is arrayed in a pattern so that all nations are in equal level, none taller than the other, the Lord of Lyradis is seated in the 12-o-clock station of the round room, and he stands and welcomes you all earnestly. The courses begin, and you are pleasantly surprised by the dishes. An array of foods hailing from each nation is brought forth between the many courses, an impressive feat for a nation with few alliances of food. At the table of Lyradis, you notice that Benjamin and his wife are seated, as well as Lyra and her husband Korath (both looking quite happy), Jain and Royce sit alone, as does their father, Gareth. After the meal, the Ball starts in earnest, and guests are able to socialize, dance or discuss at their leizure.

Tuthin of the Unbroken Line Clan, son of Mormaer Razkai, picks up a glass of wine and moves close to the Lyradis table. His long iron-grey hair is tied back, and he wears a long tunic of expensive green cloth, with a nugget of raw iron ore tied in his beard. An ornamental dagger is tied into its sheath at his belt.
"We found the journey to your splendid city surprisingly long, my lord Gareth. It might be a good idea in future to construct some sort of tunnel system, to aid in movement. But let us leave such pedestrian matters, and enjoy the ball."
He bows low in the Razdissi fashion, then moves towards the largest gathering of delegates.

Olwyt nodded at his father as the banquet wrapped up and the Khan headed off towards the room reserved for the conference Shinguard Earthguard was holding. Standing alone he didn't know what to do, and he stood still like a statue for a moment before realizing he needed to move. He finished off his glass of wine and laid it down on the table, moving away towards the crowd. His eyes surveyed the arrays of people, there were many types of people here. Some lighter skinned men and women looking like himself, some short bearded folks wandered the floor, and a small assortment of stranger people also moved about the floor.

Olwyt decided his best course of action was to find a dance partner. The young lady of Lyradis had caught his eye and though she was clearly married it would not harm him to befriend the young hostess.

He approached the area the royal family sat at and bowed deeply to the Lord Gareth, "My lord, this ball is most impressive. You do Woodwind and my family honor in hosting us," Olwyt turned and then bowed, slightly less than he had to Garether but still with much reverence, to Korath and then to the lady Lyra, "My lady, may I have this dance?" Olwyt asked, extending his hand and smiling warmly, "That is if my lord finds no offense?" he added, turning his head to Korath.

Lord Gareth smiles warmly at his Dwarven friend as he is greeted, and then even warmer at the criticism. "One of the reasons I have enjoyed our friendship is your frankness in matters," Gareth laughed, standing and clasping his ally. "Truth be told, we've felt much the same. Jain is heading up a project to better assist with this, and your stone is one of the primary ingredients. Still, we might want to discuss this at a further time. Perhaps we might better remedy the project with the help of your nation. Until then, enjoy the festivities."

*All the attendants hear a loud buzzing sound, after which five giant mantids fly overhead. A little while later, a large man clad in full war gear, a short black beard strides towards Gareth, a big grin lying on his face. He is accompanied by two women, around 15 years old, who look at the guests and the keep with big eyes. Strangly enough though, one of them appears to be flying and has a fish tail instead of legs.*

"Lord Gareth Serendel, I assume?" He asks with a cheerful wink, hand outstretched. "Nyllana, come on down and greet our host with the respect he deserves!" Upon which the flying woman glides down and makes a graceful courtsy.
"Happy to make your acquaintance, Lord Serendel. My name is Nyllana Earthguard, heir of Kasumor." Nyllana says nervously, but with her eyes clear and focuses on the host.
"She is getting there" Marius says with a proud disposition on his face. "Anyway, it is has been a long time, my friend. We have much to discuss. However, if you could show me to the room you provided for the conference, I would be most gratefull. We can talk about the other matters later, if you do not mind ofcourse."

A few of the more circumspect guests notice a shadowy figure lurking near the entrance. After surveying the happenings for a few minutes, he disappears. Shortly thereafter, he re-enters, following Loki Ethmorl, who is wearing exceptionally expensive silks and an ornamental breastplate made of a tough-looking animal hide that none of the guests can identify. His dark red hair is trimmed so the loose locks hanging down his back are shaped like flames. He quickly crosses the room, eyes darting around as if looking for something. They briefly settle on the elven princess, Weiss, and on Nyllana of Kasumar, before flitting back into motion. The movement stops when he reaches the Lyradis table.

Lord Gareth! I bring the greeting of the nine guilds, and wish luck on you and your family. You do us a great honor by our inclusion in this event. Now, enough with the formalities! Let us drink together.

After a few drinks and some small talk, Loki leans over and speaks in a lower tone.

Now, my lord, I have a favor to ask. I will be thirty three next year, and I and the various guildmasters agree that it is high time I got to procuring myself an heir. Would you mind pointing out the unmarried prospects that are attending, and perhaps arranging introductions? I confess I am a bit nervous when dealing with the fairer sex, specifically when starting conversations.

The Doge himself enters late into the evening, after the end of the Conference, eyes heavy, but satisfied. That is, until he spies the retainers of Loki Ethmori. "Dangerous folk, they," He mutters to nearby trade partners. "And did you see the way she looked upon the possibility of victims in the Elven Princess? This ball may hold many dark tidings..."

As Lord David strides purposefully into the hall, he admonishes his son, Cedrik, for his fascination with his puzzle sphere.
But, Dad, the trades woman said it had a magic ball inside, if I could open it!
Nonsense, says Delia. Magic is the realm of stories and their tellers. In other words, it does not exist, and what made you believe that nonsense is beyond me.
Children, please, admonishes Lord David. This is the home of an honored leader, and you should show the proper respect. Seeing Lady Weiss among the crowd, he points her out, saying, Look, there is the wife of your cousin, Griffon. She is the Crown Princess of Eyrecradia, an underground nation of elves. We will be meeting her shortly. Show some respect, please. He begins to purposely stride toward her, herding his children along with him.

Magic does exist in a way: imagination. You can move mountains, shatter metal, and create life with it.

Bowing deeply, he says, A most excellent point, my lady. And yes, you are correct. How is my nephew, if I may? (I'm gonna say he's not there, simply because he's 8.)His mother especially was concerned about sending him off to a far away land.

Well enough, as far as I know.Looking down, he sees Delia pulling at his shirt sleeve. Yes, Delia, what is it? Adults are speaking.
    Cedriks wandered off.
Looking about him, he notices that, indeed, Cedrik has wandered off. Well- hmm. That is... problematic. I suppose we must find him... Well, Lady Weiss, I suppose I must cut this conversation short to find my wretch of a son. I hope you enjoy yourself tonight, and I advise you become acquainted with the rest of my allies. A cool breeze playfully dances around the party as they lead their horses through Lyradis.

Atop the Crest, Elder Jaten stops suddenly to absorb the view. And what a view it is! Elder Ambvard looks to the guide in confusion as the seconds drag onto minutes. The Tekorvites seem unable to move as they survey the land. Finally, the party moves toward a strange city.

The Great Hall looms before them.

Duke Bloodfang looked over the congregation, his eyes detached, and his expression seemingly elsewhere. His hand holds up his head as his free hand holds onto a bottle of rum he managed to strong arm out of the hands of a servant. He swishes the bottle around gently, looking down at it before raising his head back and taking a swig. Standing up, he suddenly grows more focussed on his surroundings, and proceeds to move. The Duke of Sympolemou was bedecked in standard high ranking military attire, a kind of metal jacket entwined with leather to cover the arms and belly, leaving black, cold iron to armor the rest. Several badges and trophies stud his breast and shoulder, many of them markings of battles won and fights ended. He even sports the standard metal helm of military leaders, including the row of raised spikes.

His eyes narrow in, pin pointing his target like a predator in the night, amd he begins to mobilize. Tilting his head up, Bloodfang begins to literally swagger his way over to Lord Gareth, his arm draped over the shoulder of his consort (Whom, in comparison to the hulking warrior that was the Duke, looked like a delicate and sinuous antique, in danger of snapping from too much pressure), and his free hand now no longer holding onto the bottle of rum. Smiling, he bellows out in his deep baritone voice.

"Lord Gareth! It's good to finally meet you in the flesh and blood. This is quite the collection you've managed here, truly I'm impressed. But, do you think I could have a word with you, in private?"

As he spoke, the Duke began to wonder where his children had ran off to. He knew Queek was standing right behind him, peaking his tiny furry head out to get a glimpse of Lord Gareth before darting back behind his father. But Krick, Virmiscus, and Snikk were a mystery. He mentally shrugged, they probably just decided to mingle with the Doge's family, considering how many of them there were.

Olwyt asked, extending his hand and smiling warmly, "That is if my lord finds no offense?" he added, turning his head to Korath.
For Korath, the last two years in Lyradis were ones of homesickness and also happiness. He and Princess Lyra got along reasonably well, and he felt himself included as part of their family. Still, he missed his parents and siblings, so had looked forward to the Ball more than most. As he sipped the fine Lyradisian vintage, perhaps the best he had tasted, he found himself momentarily confused by being referred to as "my lord", but he scolded himself internally for forgetting that not everyone followed Ashenite etiquette.
"Of course Prince Olwyt," he said, concerned that prince was not accepted when referring to the son of a Woodwind Khan. He should have listened to his mentor more closely. "Please give my regards to your father."

After the feast, King Hazael, his wife and attendant daughters had excused themselves to dress for the dance. After a surprisingly short absence, they returned to the hall, the King and Queen of Ashenia arm in arm, flanked by their daughters Idrisa, Salline and Mira. The King and Queen both wore plain silver crowns out of respect for their royal hosts and long royal blue capes lined with fur and embroidered with silver images of the mountain forests of Ashenia, their hair intricately braided. The King wore a white robe embroidered in black and purple with stylised wolves and eagles, whereas the Queen wore a white gown accented with pale blue embroidery in a design of flowering vines. Their daughters were attired much more simply in plain, but luxuriant, gowns. Idrisa's gown was of royal purple silk, Salline's of Saffron and Mira's of scarlet. They each wore a simple silver diadem atop their long black hair which they wore unbraided as a sign of their unwed status.
As a group, they moved forward, intent to pay the proper homage to their host. King Hazael was the first to speak:
"Now Your Grace, do not take our host away from us just yet. I wish to thank him for his hospitality as is only right and proper."
He bowed to the Sympol Duke out of apology for interrupting, and turned to face Lord Gareth.
"Lord Gareth," he began, "It is indeed a great honour to be invited to your court. You have provided us with a most bounteous feast, truly, your hospitality is the envy of any monarch in this world."
He removed a bracelet of intricate silver filigree from his wrist and passed it to Gareth. "Please accept this as the first of many gifts and allow me to introduce my beloved wife Salline, and my three eldest daughters, Idrisa, named for my poor mother, Salline named for, well, it's obvious, and Mira after a friend.
"I'll take no more of your time and allow you to be whisked away by Duke Bloodfang."

He bowed again to them both as his wife and daughters curtseyed. The King and Queen of Ashenia joined the dancers who had already begun, the pair of them adopting a stately style as they did so. Their daughters dispersed into the crowd, attracted to groupings of younger royalty.

Now that all the festivities, drinking and dancing have really begun, the group of old grey man that stand nervously near a table were the wine is served can easily be spotted. However among the man there are 2 ladies of about the same age, though they look very unalike.

The blond lady appears to be Silandei Divinorum and she is clearly amused:
Can you not enjoy the festivities sister, look at all the marry making people. This is what the Lord intended, people should not live sober. They should enjoy the live that is given to us.

The brown haired lady, visibly enjoyed that she has to be there, answers:Of all places I could have been right now this is quite definitely the worst. And to make it even worse I have to spend this evening with you!

    Combulei interferes:
Ladies, please. You are drawing attention to yourselves and may I say, it is not positive. I have, however, a solution. Vilindrae why don't you join me for the conference. After all you will have to succeed me one day and so you might as well get to know our future allies.

    Vilindrae's face brightens:
I would most definitely prefer that, let us go right now. I cannot stand this crowd a minute longer.

The two priests make their way towards the conference room, engaged in a discussion of trivial matters.

While their parents danced, Idrisa, Salline and Mira wandered through the crowd, looking for interesting people to talk to.

The eldest, Idrisa, came across a blonde woman (Silandei Divinorum) in a long cloak who seemed to be enjoying herself immensely. With an imperial gesture that only an elder child of an Ashene monarch could pull off, she motioned for a servant to bring her a glass of wine. Fortified by the resulting glass in hand, she strode toward the foreign figure determined to make foreign friends to better Ashenia's foreign relations.
"Good evening, you must be one of Columbei Divinorum's daughters. I am Princess Idrisa Toranath of Ashenia." She bowed politely, uncertain whether handshakes were prevalent in Calorum.

The next eldest, Salline, found herself drawn to the exotic figure of Weiss. It had been centuries since an Elf had last been seen in Ashenia and as a student of the natural sciences, she could not help her curiosity. Unfortunately, she was much less used to public occasions than her older sister, so found herself mentally stumbling over what to say. In the end, she resolved to remain at a distance and hope for a conversation she could involve herself in.

Mira on the other hand came across a young boy wandering the crowd, no older than ten, who was preoccupied with a wooden(?) puzzle. From his features, Mira guessed that he was probably from Bordeux, a nation her father had allied with. Thus, she felt obligated to ensure he didn't run off and get hurt. The tallest of her sisters, she hoped she wouldn't be too menacing a figure in her deep scarlet gown.
"Hello. What's that you have there?"

    Spoiler: Celero Attendees
    Show
    King Andust the Bold
    Crown Princess Yasira Noth
Heinrich Noth, brother to the King

The Celero delegation is late, and not for the first time this trip. King Andust looks uncomfortable, and not just because is wearing a thick fur jacket in the warm and humid day. It is obvious he values punctuality, yet he has been unable to arrive on time for important events. At first glance, his crown appears to be silver, but on closer inspection, one can identify it as made of platinum. At his side, he carries a delicately carved wooden sword. He looks at the crowd already assembled, and finds the nearest servant to doff his regal fur coat, cursing slightly under his breath. Underneath, he wears attire that looks more fitting for a lord, not a king; blue linen garments with a touch of gold silk accenting the shirt, black boots of a fine leather, thick canvass pants, and what appears to be a military uniform sash.

His daughter, the crown princess Yasira, walks arm-in-arm with Ruffino, one of the Doge of Guilder's many progeny in attendance. She appears smitten, he appears bewildered at his luck. Her gown is of a shimmering gold, accented with white silk gloves and a simple modest crown of gold and silver, or at least as modest as a crown of gold and silver can be.

The King's Brother, Heinrich looks almost out of place. He wears a military uniform of few adornments of blue, gold and white, thick heavy black boots, and a cap identifying him as a leader of men. Despite the heat, he looks unphased in his cold weather attire, with only a single bead of sweat betraying his discomfort.

Andust spies the suspicious fellow by the door, and motions his brother Heinrich over to him.

"Watch that man. I don't know if he is here to cause trouble, or to watch for trouble, but I'd rather be safe than sorry."

Heinrich replies tersely "Consider it done, brother. No one will interrupt our surprise." With that said, he slides silently away, and is moderately successful at disappearing into the crowd.

"She is getting there" Marius says with a proud disposition on his face. "Anyway, it is has been a long time, my friend. We have much to discuss. However, if you could show me to the room you provided for the conference, I would be most gratefull. We can talk about the other matters later, if you do not mind ofcourse."
Lord Gareth tilted his head as the Lord of Woodwind led his daughter, hearing a familiar buzzing noise. It reminded him of his travels in his childhood...

Then as Marius Earthguard enters the Hall, confirmation spreads acrossed his face. The insects of Kasumor, of course. It had been a very long time since then. A different time as well.

Gareth smiled and grasped the hand of Marius, rising from his seat to do so. He turned and greeted the daughter, studying her unique form. "It is a pleasure, Nyllana. Tell me, mi'lady. With your form, do you need special accomidations? I can surely provide, if needed." Gareth was in unfamiliar territory, and was unsure what would be comfortable for someone with a fish tail. Did she need a basin of water?

"Ah, yes, Marius. I have prepared the Blue Room for your meeting. There are sixteen chairs around the table, but you can ask an attendant for more if there is need." Gareth gestures for an attendant, and one hurries over. "Lead the Lord of Kasumor to the Blue Room. And see that refreshments see their way there."

Gareth turns back to Marius. "I shall see you after your meeting, then?" he said, returning the other's wink. "I'm looking forward to it.

Royce was eating and greeting, but he stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Marius' daughter, Ryella. She had gossemer wings arrayed behind her back, and a mystical kinid of beauty. She was easily the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Royce realized his apparent gawking, and regained his composure. Still, his eyes never left her, even as she left with her father.

Silandei, glad to find some new company, returned the courtesy and bowed before she said:.
Good evening Princess Idrisa Toranath, You are absolutely correct I am His child. Though to say he is my father would be an overstatement. But allow me to introduce myself properly. Silandei Divinorum, Keeper of the holy flame, Priestess of Caloxdur, at your service. But please call me Silandei, I see no need for such formalities at a time like this. *she smiles* I see you're enjoying the wine. They have a great assortment, though I expect it would be even better with one of the cheeses your country is so rich of.

To rectify their unfortunate trapped state, we should agree on the terms of the alliance."
My mother would be best to talk to, I'm afraid.

    Spoiler: Traveling: A week prior
    Show
"Week after week on the road, how far is Lyradis anyways?" Vanavati looked listlessly out the window. "I'm tired of this carriage. It's so weird." The carriage had been rented in Hrathan or Tuor. Tendaji wasn't actually sure which one was which, or maybe the whole place is just Htathan and Tuor.

"Hey, the Guildmasters were nice enough to lend us these carriages. Otherwise we'd be on vouranback the whole way. And the Guide says we're close. Those mountains ahead are the destination."

"Pfft, 'lend' must be a new word for sell. I remember them taking our coin. If you think they were doing it out of kindness Uncle..."

"Vanavati, apologize to uncle Hari. There's no reason for you to snap at him like that." Tendaji was also tired of the carriage, but that didn't mean he'd let his son act like a spoiled child. He was sixteen, old enough to behave properly.

"Sorry, uncle." Vanavati looked at the floor, refusing to make eye contact. The ball could not come soon enough. Anything to be out of this carriage.

The Genivanan envoy all entered together. Their table was a bit crowded all together there was Tendaji, his wife, Chetana, their three children, Vanavati, Obiravi, and Savitra, his brother, Hari, and his cousins Faruha, and Kishor. Tendaji and Hari were there as ambassadors sent by their father. Kishor was a knight and asked to represent the royal guard. And Faruha... well Faruha was just hoping to meet a husband.

They dressed traditionally, in loose silk shirts and pants that cuffed at the calf. Their clothing showed impressive embroidery, mostly it was trees and plant life. Genivanan women rarely wear dresses. There is nothing modest about a dress when you're climbing a tree. Tendaji was a tall man with dark skin and long black dreadlocks. Hari had lighter hair, but it was easy to tell the two were brothers. Chetana had very short red hair and fur down her arms. She wore a headdress of bright feathers and pearls, but otherwise no jewelry. Faruha on the other hand was covered in jewelry. She wore rings on every finger and had feathers woven into her long black hair. Kishor dressed the most simply of the group, but wore a ceremonial sword at his side. Kishor was more mawa than human, and had the thick red mane to prove it. None of them wore shoes, which might not have been that strange if not for their mawa heritage. With the exception of Tendaji and Hari, they all had ape feet.

The kingdom of Genivana is well noted by Guilder, and the Doge in particular spies the unwed offspring with a smile on his face. Already tired, but looking to the future, he pushes one of his sons to reluctantly take up conversation with Faruha.

"Hello... I'm Pirant Roberts, young prince of Guilder. Who might you be, lovely lady?" He does his best not to look down to her feet, but it's awfully tough. "You are from the jungle-nation of Genivana, correct? What are the... uh... waters like there?" He seeks out a point of common ground, inwardly very unsure of his father's wisdom in matchmaking.

Tumberink the Doge pays little attention to his son Pirant, other than to make sure that the conversation begins well. They're trained in ettiquete and manners; what could go wrong? With this satisfying thought in his head, he moves to speak to the representative of Genivana, Tendaji the Second. "Ah! At long last! A fellow lover of the oceans! It is good to see another unique traveler here at the ball. I do hope that we may speak of great things?" He smiles and awaits the words of the Priest.
